Computer tips from Dolphin Computer Upgrades 111

New Year, New Security Risk? Windows 7 support is coming to end in January 2020 – if you are still using Windows 7, this means that your computer will be vulnerable to attack, and as much as IT experts are aware of these security issues, so are the cyber criminals. Having already withdrawn mainstream support for Windows 7 back in January 2015, (there have been no non-critical security updates, design changes, or complimentary support since then) the extended support comes to an end on January 14, 2020. It is estimated that Windows 7 still accounts for around 70% of the world's desktop and laptop computers used by businesses and public-sector environments around the world - does this include you? We understand that a lot of home users and business would rather stick with Windows 7 and are not best pleased at being “forced” to upgrade their operating systems, but if you don’t you are at a far greater risk of being hit by the hundreds of thousands of malware programs that surface on the

internet every day, as well as the billions that are already out there. Microsoft will also stop offering security updates for Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 7 computers. Using an unsupported operating system is risky, but using an unsupported browser is even worse, and there’s no guarantee that Google’s Chrome and Mozilla’s Firefox will offer Windows 7 support after 2020 either. Windows 7 was originally launched in 2009, and nothing has been written or created for this OS for several years. If you do nothing, you will find that once support ceases you will have issues accessing online banking and any secure, HTTPS websites as well as issues with browsers. For home users this could be frustrating – for businesses this could be costly. Having your computer systems go down because you didn’t upgrade from Windows 7 will be embarrassing at best, and no business wants unnecessary downtime.

Interaction… The Arts And Intergenerational Connections Essential to Well Being Nial Joyce of Clifden House, Seaford reflects on a busy and very colourful Autumn. Clifden House Dementia Care Centre, Seaford residents have been involved in several community initiatives ranging from bowling competitions to art exhibitions as well as entertainment from a visiting farm and local nursery school. In October, a local Seaford nursery school joined forces with Clifden House residents to enjoy a fun filled day of animal magic. The activities team at the dementia care centre invited the travelling farm to set up camp in its back garden and it was an incredibly successful and sunny day.

The farm comes to Clifden House

Nial Joyce, Clifden House said: “It was a truly great experience, enjoyed by all generations. Our residents were thrilled to welcome the children and everyone loved being involved with the farm animals. “The importance of intergenerational interaction was recently highlighted by Age UK in a report titled: Making Intergenerational Connections. We believe that intergenerational programmes are not simply ‘nice to have’ but rather are necessary for the ongoing well-being of our residents.”

Indoor Bowling at Denton Island Bowls Club

This was closely followed by Clifden House residents taking on the Denton Island, Newhaven bowling team in a ‘fierce’ battle on the green. The joy and satisfaction for residents of Clifden House from this friendly competition has resulted in a re-match scheduled over the coming months. Finally, with the 100 anniversary celebrations of Armistice Day taking place, Clifden House was exceptionally proud of the artwork developed by its residents, in particular by Verna, and supported by Art Techniques. The end product was a wonderful applique peacock. The peacock has been a symbol of resurrection and new life from ancient day and has decorated the altar at St Peters Church, East Blatchington, Sussex since All Souls' Day. If you need advice, or just need to talk to one of our dementia care experts, email: office@clifdenhouse.co.uk. We’re always happy to help. Bridgeford’s Best Bites

Staying Healthy In December December can be a challenging month with the excesses and stresses of Christmas festivities. EXCESSES: Food There is no healthy way to eat ALL the food associated with Christmas in one day. Too many rich foods leave us feeling bloated, heavy and sluggish over burdening our digestive systems. Why pig out at Christmas and then suffer for two months to lose the excess weight! ● Always eat breakfast ● Eat regularly, preferably little and often ● Eat raw salads for lunch regularly, even in winter ● Enjoy some “treats” without Christmas being a constant treat ● Pause between courses or seconds: It takes 20 minutes for the brain to hear the stomach ● Get outside for walks in the fresh air to avoid binge eating on the couch Alcohol We tend to celebrate the festivities with extra alcohol ● Never drink on an empty stomach ● Have savoury snacks with any pre-meal drinks ● Preferably drink alcohol with a meal ● Avoid Hangovers ● Drink water alternately with alcoholic drinks at parties ● Keep well hydrated; drink water before going to bed ● Pace yourself! STRESSES Christmas is promoted as a time of joy, yet can become a time of stress if you are not feeling joyous. Several factors can affect our stress and nervous systems ● Family and social tensions and worries; unrealistic expectations of self and others ● Excess sugar and alcohol affect our adrenal glands, giving us a rush then dropping us down ● Over burdened digestion can make the brain sluggish ● Lack of sleep leaves us jaded SUPPORT YOUR.... ● Nervous system with B complex ● Immune system with Zinc, Copper, vitamin C, vitamin D, Echinacea ● Adrenals with vitamin C, Ginseng ● Liver with B vitamins (B12, Choline, Inositol), vitamin A, Cysteine, NAC, Milkthistle ● Gut with Alkalising salts, Probiotics ● Stress and muscles with Magnesium ● Cell membranes with good Omega 3,6,9 oils ● Self with positive, supportive people and activities ● Everything with ● Water to help eliminate extra toxins ● More fruit and vegetables ● Remember to BREATH! We are happy to advise you on health matters and good quality nutrients tailored specifically to suit you.

Friends of Beacon Hill

Beacon Hill Nature Reserve 2018 was again another successful year for Friends of Beacon Hill. We saw the number of volunteers increase and even had the pleasure of meeting Harry, a young man participating in the Duke of Edinburgh Award. We have exceeded 750 (wo)man volunteer hours over the last 12 months which is an amazing achievement and one which all concerned should be very proud of. Without the dedication of our volunteers, Beacon Hill would be shadow of the glorious example of chalk downland that it is today. Thank you to everybody that has supported us either financially, bodily or just giving us a cheery wave and a smile as they go about their daily business on the hill. The scrub has been bashed and the results of hours of dedicated hard work starting to pay off with our experimental area (just to the north of the central copse) barely recognisable from when we started hand pulling 3 years ago. That said the other areas of the hill towards the East, along the woods, are still being “impregnated” with woody plants so our work is very much an ongoing job. In the spring the sheep arrived for an early graze, returning in the autumn to continue eating their way through the thick grass and juicy shoots. Our volunteers were always on hand to move the fences each time the flock switched sections. Whilst not part of FoBH, the lookerers were up twice a day to walk through the flock ensuring no sheep were injured, filling their water trough and checking that the fencing was still in place. Similar to the scrub, the ragwort is diminishing due to a combination of grazing and hand pulling, although we are now have hoary cress to contend with. Mother Nature is throwing all sorts of invasive species at us but we are a steely bunch and meet her head on !! During the “off” season when the skylarks are nesting, we headed into the woods to build a fantastic set of steps through the woods at the Court Ord Road end of the Nature Reserve.

Fundraising was a huge success and we should see 3 new picnic benches being erected by the end of the year. To round the year off we took a different tack and actually planted instead of pulling !! We applied for and were awarded a pack of 200 tree whips which have been planted along the edge of North Wood. We wanted to increase the diversity of the wood and have planted a selection of Elder, Hazel, Rowan, Crab Apple, Blackthorn and Dog Rose. On the evening of Remembrance Sunday this year The Royal British Legion held a Beacon this year to commemorate the end of World War 1. The event was very well attended and they did a marvellous job of clearing the burn site afterwards. We have had to switch our Wednesdays to Tuesdays due to ranger availability and will reconvene in 2019 on the 2ⁿ Tuesday and 4 Friday of each month 10AM at the Beacon Hub Cafe Kiosk. The Funeral Accounts of Margetts and Cooke Part 2 From March 1908 to December 1946

Margetts and Cooke expanded as the years passed, even opening a builders merchants in Saltdean Vale where the Co-op stands today. The nature of the funeral changed as the twentieth century progressed, from burial in family vaults to cremation. July 1938 appears to be the first funeral service where the company solely used the local crematorium, although as early as 1922 bodies were being conveyed to Brooklands Crematorium at Woking from this area. At about the same time a private chapel of rest was provided for a fee, as the practice of keeping the coffin in the front room diminished. Perhaps some didn’t want their body to be consumed by worms but were not yet prepared for cremation. In 1927 Lord Rotherham was provided with a lead lined coffin, while in 1929 the village baker Nelson Stenning had a coffin half lined with zinc. You can tell a lot about someone’s wealth from their burial. William Brown, the last farmer of Challoners, was buried in a cashmere and lace-lined coffin. Another interesting fact was that in 1944 a funeral was arranged at Quarry Road, Saltdean. This was so named because of the chalk quarry on its eastern side from where the chalk foundation for Saltdean's early roads was quarried. It has since been changed to the more attractive name of Greenbanks! Some prominent funerals were carried out by the company, The Ellerman Steamship Company paid for the funerals of James Short, Harry Bateman and an unknown sailor washed ashore on Telscombe beach from the wreck of the SS Tycho. This merchant ship was sailing from Bombay to Hull in 1917 when it was sunk by a U- boat, UB40, which sank ninety-nine ships during WWI. The crew took to the lifeboats with no casualties. Admiralty rules forbade the picking up of survivors but The Porthkerry came to the rescue, sadly while picking them up it was itself sunk by a torpedo from the UB40 which killed five of her crew and fifteen from the Tycho. Eventually survivors were picked up by the SS Esperanto and taken to Newhaven. Both wrecks lie 16 miles south of Beachy Head. See us online at www.deansmagazine.co.uk

S.S. Tycho Grave

Another prominent funeral was that of Lady Carson who lived at Northgate House, where Northgate Close is today. Her Dublin-born husband, Lord Carson, was a wealthy successful barrister who came to prominence as prosecuting counsel in the Oscar Wilde case. He was also a Unionist MP and became Solicitor General. Note the horse drawn glass hearse.

We are sorry to inform you that Rottingdean Treasures has been cancelled due to ill health

41

Despite the wartime economies of 1945 both Lady Strathspey and Miss Louisa Courtenay had their funerals accompanied by both an organist and a string quartet! The latter was also billed for two announcements in both The Times and The Daily Telegraph. Other extras included mourning cards, this one from Victorian times is from the funeral of James Snudden. He was Chief Coastguard at Portobello and would have lived at what is now The Smugglers Rest, while his staff lived at the coastguard cottages which you may still see opposite. Lady Carson’s Funeral

Less noteworthy but equally missed were the village baker Nelson Stenning, the proprietors of both the Sally Lunn and The Merrythought Tearooms, not to mention many members of old Rottingdean families such as the Mockfords and The Coppers.

Neighbourhood Watch

Christmas Safety Advice Good news - HGV’s in Rottingdean High Street Because of the continued reporting of Company names and registration numbers of HGV’s driving through Rottingdean High Street PCSO Chris Rogers has reported that he has been able to contact several Company Directors. They have agreed to inform their drivers that they have to use alternative routes. Please keep on reporting and sending in photographs etc. Thank you for your continued support. Christmas Safety Advice Once a year, twinkling fairy lights & Christmas illuminations are retrieved from damp, dusty storage spaces to decorate our homes for the Festive season, but poorly stored, old electrical decorations and overloaded sockets can create unnecessary hazards at this time of year. These safety tips may help you avoid any disasters this Christmas. Merry & Bright Carefully inspect Christmas light strings each year for frayed cords, cracked bulb holders, or loose connections, and discard them if you find any. When replacing bulbs, unplug the lights and be sure to match voltage and wattage to the original bulb. When buying lights always look for safety marks eg BS Kite mark. Buy from a reputable store and avoid buying second hand.

Do not use the lights outdoors unless specifically made for such use. New lights are transformed down to 24 volts for added safety, or they may be double insulated. Use a RCD (residual current device) for added protection against shock, and to reduce the risk of electrical fires. Do not let children play with lights. Keep lights away from flammable decorations and other materials that can burn easily. Lights out Always turn off Christmas lights when you leave the house or when going to bed. Outdoors Ensure all outside lights are connected via a 30Ma RCD protected socket. When putting lights up choose the correct ladder for the job and have someone ‘foot’ the ladder for extra stability. Always move the ladder when you need to and don’t over reach. Enjoy your beautiful decorations. Wishing you all happy, safe and secure holidays! Rossini’s La Gazzetta After the massive success of our charity screening of Donizetti’s ‘L’Elisir d’Amore’ (raising over £800), we’re giving you a rare treat: a Rossini comic opera ‘La Gazzetta’ (‘The Newspaper’).

earth Lisetta manages to throw her leg over the back of a chair whilst singing; or how she, or any of the others, can sing and dance simultaneously, I have no idea … Enormous fun!

This production was filmed live at the world-famous Teatre del Liceu, in Barcelona; and staged, directed and designed by the hugely talented (and Nobelprize-winning) author Dario Fo.

Sung in Italian; with English subtitles; and an interval for prosecco & other refreshments.

Whilst ‘La Gazzetta’ may not be as well known as the Verdi or Puccini operas that are trotted out dutifully by lots of operatic societies, this one has the distinct advantages of being both fresh and funny.

This year, we are supporting two charities: The Children’s Society and The Alzheimer’s Society. Every penny that comes in over the bar or in the box office, will be split evenly between them, as Cinema Saltdean is subsidising all the operational costs. The screening licence is, once more, generously being donated by The Royal Opera House, for which we are tremendously grateful. All tickets £5.50, as usual.

‘La Gazzetta’ is a satire on the effect that newspapers have on people’s lives, which is surely as relevant today as it was when written in 1816. The original play on which it was based, was written in 1763 by Carlo Goldoni (better known for ‘Servant of Two Masters’, revived as “One Man, Two Guv’nors”).

Don’t worry about a posh frock - but do come and support this delightful event.

Linda (with thanks to composer Robert Hugill for some of the précis)

Rossini, astonishingly, wrote 41 operas, which include January’s film is a dollop of Greek sunshine: ‘Mamma ‘The Barber of Seville’ when he was only 24 years old Mia Here We Go Again’ (2018). If you like Abba, this is (followed immediately by ‘La Gazzetta’), and his final one for you. one, ‘William Tell’, when he was 39. If you know Rossini’s ‘La Cenerentola’ (‘Cinderella’) you will recognise the lively overture from ‘La Gazzetta’! This Teatre del Liceu production is astonishing: the cast, warm and engaging. The soloists have delicious voices: light, delicate, sensitive – none of the old-style operatic bellowing here. Yet the main character, Lisetta, has almost as tricky a set of high notes, as the Queen of the Night in Mozart’s ‘Magic Flute’. As with many a comic opera, the plot is completely ridiculous. Don Pomponio, a self-made Neapolitan man living in a hotel in Paris, decides to advertise his daughter Lisetta as being available for marriage, in the newspaper, La Gazzetta. In fact, Lisetta has fallen in love with Filippo, the hotel's manager. Two other guests (Alberto and Monsu Traversen) become interested in Lisetta's hand. There is a second father and daughter couple, Anselmo and Doralice. There is plenty of scope for mass confusion and mistaken identities, including fake Quakers and fake Turks. We end up with not one but two principal couples, Lisetta (soprano) and Filippo (baritone), and Doralice (soprano) and Alberto (tenor). Dario Fo’s staging and saucy vaudeville production only add to the confusion and sense of fun - who wouldn’t want to see an opera that features rubber chickens and roller-skating nuns? … and how on If you have a local article to publish email info@deansmagazine.co.uk

Conway Dunn Another book from Saltdean author, Conway Dunn! “What Jesus Did And Didn’t Teach” is a detailed study of Jesus’ statements, as recorded in the four Gospels, about a host of subjects. Grouped under the headings Theology, Worship, Morality, Particular Groups, What Jesus Didn’t Teach About, A Personal Perspective and Jesus’ Teaching and Old Testament Teaching. For instance, Morality explores his message about The Fundamental Commandments, The Law, Good thoughts and deeds, Bad thoughts and deeds, Forgiving, Enemies, Nonresistance, Giving, Wealth, Judging, Humility, Commitment, Divorce and Adultery. Variations are fully acknowledged, and balanced, perhaps precariously, in an attempt to reach the core of each teaching; though What Jesus Didn’t Teach About proposes issues – The existence of God, Politics, Human punishments, Suicide, Abortion, Servitude, Homosexuality, Women, Soldiers, Animals – on which, it is argued, he made no particular pronouncement or gave any clear guidance. Underlying difficulties, such as the Gospel writers’ personal involvements, are raised, as are other Biblical problems, textual, historical, ethical, all affecting just what to believe and how to behave in the modern world. At the end, the question, what does being a Christian really mean and entail? Available from “Waterstones” and “City Books” (Brighton) or from the author (tel. :01273 300503). £5.99.

Message in a Bottle As we approach the winter months we thought it may be timely to remind people of the Message in a bottle initiative that we have been supporting. In an emergency time can be of the essence in saving lives and ensuring a good outcome. Emergency Services need to be able to assess and assimilate a situation as quickly as possible. Message in a Bottle initiative aims to provide easily found and vital information when it is needed most.

At this time of year, we always remember at the Lions our heartfelt slogan ‘Where there’s a need there’s a Lion.’ As this is the December edition of the Deans Magazine, Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions Club would like to wish the readers of this magazine a happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Also, the Lions would like to thank all the Deans Magazine readers that have supported them during 2018.

What is it? A simple idea designed to encourage people to keep their basic personal and medical details on a standard form and in a common place – the fridge!

If you would like more information on any of our services, fundraising activities, or want to lodge an interest in supporting us in any way through 2019, or you would like more details on our Message in a bottle initiative please contact Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions on 08458 339617 or email us at info@rottingdeanandsaltdeanlions.org.uk.

What does it do? It saves the emergency services valuable time if they need to enter a property in an emergency by both helping to establish your identity, and notify any special medication or allergies.

Lion Roger Bluff

Who is it for? Anyone: while focused on more vulnerable people, the scheme can benefit anyone, in the event of an accident or sudden illness at home. What’s in the bottle? A form you fill in with your name, medicines, allergies and relatives’ contact details. And also two green stickers. (There is a space provided on the form to add a photo in cases where two or more people use the scheme in the same household and confusion could occur.) How does it work? Each bottle contains - an information leaflet and stickers for placing on the fridge door and the inside of the front door. Participants fill in a leaflet with personal details including doctor, contact number for emergencies, any ailments, medication, and allergies. (You need only fill in as much as you are comfortable with.) The completed leaflet is then put a small plastic bottle and placed in the fridge. Who knows about it? All the Emergency Services are aware of the Message in a Bottle scheme. By displaying the green stickers in your home the emergency services will quickly locate the bottle in the fridge and use the form inside to ensure you are treated quickly which can save time and lives What does it cost? The bottles are provided free to the public, funded by the Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions Club. Bottles are also available in pharmacies. Please contact us if you or anyone you know may benefit from this initiative. We were pleased and proud to lay a wreath at the Remembrance Day/Armistice Day service in Rottingdean this year; especially at it was also in commemoration of 100 years since the end of World War I. The day was well supported. We will always remember those that gave their futures so that we can have our freedom hopefully in peace.

I have been a therapist for many years, I have a lot of different qualifications and training, but the therapy I am most passionate about and know first‐hand works completely is myofascial release, Myo‐fascial is the connective tissue which joins everything together, covers everything, fills all the gaps holds you together, it has the memory of your life, it relays messages to your brain faster than the nervous System, every single thing that happens to you in your life whether it be good or bad is stored in your subconscious and your fascial system, The fascia is like a giant web made up of collagen, elastin and ground substance it covers you from top to toe with no orifices unlike your skin, it moves constantly within your body, it penetrates, covers, protects every organ, muscle, ligament, tendon, bones everything- we are fascia, scar tissue is damaged fascia that has gone hard and dehydrated, that is why generally women get more lower back problems then men because they have hysterectomies, C-sections and end up with fascia that is damaged, dehydrated and hard (scar tissue) so no longer moves and consequently pulls on areas like the lower back, fascia can become hardened dehydrated and stop moving and therefore cause problems, discomfort, pain, disease for many many different reasons I generally call it life. Another example because we are one complete unit everything is connected you could have a pain in your shoulder and the

pain could possibly originate in your lower back, or maybe your neck or both. Myofascial release is being called the missing link and I passionately believe this to be true, I believe in the not too distant future everyone will be having these treatments, The cause of discomfort, pain is the collagen layer of the fascia, this is the layer that has to be released from its stuck, dehydrated, no longer moving position! An Analogy if you step on a hosepipe the flow is impaired. I am highly trained in myofascial release, I am trained to Body read to know where the problem is and then to un-stick it.. The whole world needs to know about this treatment! I feel very passionately that everyone should understand how it works, and as much as possible be able to do it to themselves and each other. There is no such thing as 'I have that pain because I'm getting old' No-one needs to have pain! Exceptions being if you break a leg or have an accident et cetera, I give these treatments which are extremely powerful but at the Same time very gentle, I also educate people so that they can self-care in the future and when they have a pain they understand why it's happening, and what they can do about it, ABSOLUTELY NO ONE HAS TO BE IN PAIN. Everyone is different sometimes it takes longer than others, IT IS WORTH THE WAIT! If you're interested in having a treatment and want to learn more about myofascial release and myself please go to: www.trigger-points.me.uk or phone me on 07951 117826

Introducing Clifftops Poets and Pirates and Princes and Peers and everyone else in The Deans are most welcome to our FREE new writing group An exciting new writing group – with free* membership – starts 5pm, Monday 7 January 2019 in Saltdean Library. Generously supported by B&H Library Services, the group (provisional name Clifftops) hopes to attract young, old, novice and experienced writers – who are not members elsewhere – from all over The Deans, for two hours of fun, pleasure and entertainment. Glenn, Saltdean's Library Officer, welcomes the new group: “Saltdean Library is the perfect place for Clifftops to meet. There is plenty of inspiration on our shelves, along with some excellent nonfiction books e.g. Writers' & Artists' Yearbook, to help budding writers hone their craft”.

Seating is limited to a dozen, so please pre-book by 15 December. To book phone/text Peter Black on 07530 051 576 email CWGSaltdean@outlook.com Sessions are at unstaffed – i.e. Libraries Extra – times. Always bring your Libraries Extra card.
