Welcome
Welcome to the January 10th Anniversary Edition It’s official I feel old! Ten years ago we re-launched what had been Village Brighton as The Deans Magazine, where has all the time gone? We have put together a special feature to celebrate the occasion on pages 64-65. Other almost as notable events in 2010 were: The opening of the World’s tallest tower, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai in January which at 828 metres remains the worlds tallest building to this day; Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland opened in March and to date has earned more than $1 billion, not bad for a story based on a book written in 1865; The release of the first ipad in April, which had sales of more than 7 million units in its first year alone. These figures make the Deans Magazine look a little insignificant but we are happy to still be here a decade later, and from the overwhelmingly positive feed back we receive so are you our readers, so thank you!

Data Privacy The end of this month brings us Data Privacy Day – a day to raise awareness and promote privacy and data protection best practices. Whilst covering all aspects of data privacy, one area we would like to bring your attention to are Privacy Policies, in particular those on websites. Now we know it can be tiresome clicking the popup boxes on pretty much every website to say whether you agree to cookies or not, but web owners have had to implement these to comply with GDPR regulations. In addition, all websites should have a Privacy Policy – and if they don’t, they are not compliant with legal requirements. The Privacy Policy is probably the one page you have never felt inclined to read on any website, but it is there to outline what personal information the website owners collect, why it is collected, and how it is used. No, it is not a riveting read, indeed you could use it to help you drift off to sleep – but it may be worth your while
acquainting yourself with how your favourite websites are using, and storing, your personal data. When you hear of large companies suffering data breaches, you usually also learn that names, logins, other personal information and sometimes even financial information has been stolen. This may not necessarily be down to a website hack, but double checking whether your card details are stored on your favourite shopping sites, and whether you have given permission for them to do so, may be in your interest. In addition, if you own, run or maintain a website, do you have a Privacy Policy that is easily accessible? If you don’t you could risk being fined, something none of us would welcome and something that could cripple smaller businesses. Our own Privacy Policy is found on the bottom left-hand site of our website for all to peruse…

Local Pilates Instructor and Physiotherapist
15
An Introduction to Pilates By Nicki Lawes, Modified Pilates Instructor & Chartered Physiotherapist. (MCSP HCPC APPI) I have been serving the Rottingdean community for the last 11 years, teaching at St Margaret’s Cottage, Rottingdean. Pilates is a wonderful form of exercise that consists of low-impact flexibility and muscular strength and endurance movements. It works to improve postural alignment, improve muscle balance and create more efficient movement patterns. It has a vast number of benefits ● Young people – It can help improve their posture, their awareness and increase their confidence and maintain some form of activity levels. ● Ageing population – It is fabulous for its bone boosting qualities, improving balance, flexibility and strength. All of which help reduce your risk of falls. ● Antenatal/postnatal women – It can help you to have a healthy and strong pregnancy reducing anxiety and stress by increasing mindfulness & concentration. Enabling you to improve your fitness in preparation for birth or post-natal it aids recovery of your pelvic floor and abdominal muscles so that you can feel strong and better able to look after your baby/children. ● Working population – From desk-based workers to heavy labourers, all of whom can suffer with joint pains, especially your neck and back. Pilates can help improve your core strength, optimise your movement and increase both endurance and strength of muscles needed to do your job and keep you free of injury. ● Everyone who needs to improve their flexibility due to lack of use, injury or requiring some support to boost confidence. ● People who suffer with too much mobility e.g.; EDS or HMS, that need to learn where their joints are in ‘neutral position’ to help with injury prevention.
“Nicki is excellent, very skilled & sensitive to individual needs of her clients, I highly recommend her classes” (S from Rottingdean aged 45yrs) “I do Pilates, it gives me strength & stability without the need for high impact exercises, which in my late 60’s suits me well. Neither do I need expensive equipment & it’s also fun!” (J, from Woodingdean aged 62yrs) “Nicki has helped me several times over the past 3 years. She is professional with a relaxed manor & a good pinch of humour. It is always refreshing to attend her classes. Highly recommend it! (A, from Kemp Town aged 30 yrs) “Nicki is brilliant, her classes are small & ensures you are doing all postures correctly. I credit her with helping me recover from a serious back injury. (L, from Woodingdean aged 45yrs) If you would like to know if I can help you to achieve your goals in 2020, feel free to contact me via phone or email. 07796 447934/ modified.pilates@gmail.com.
Having had 4 children I am very aware that if you practice Pilates regularly, it will change your body. Pilates improves muscle tone; balances muscles and supports great posture and it teaches you to move with ease. As a Chartered Physiotherapist, I can modify the exercises for all levels. I feel privileged to be able to advise/assist my clients instantly if they have a new or old injury and be able to optimise their recovery efficiently. What a few people have said about Pilates & my classes: “I do Pilates because it helps me manage my back & keeps me active for life” (S from Saltdean aged 55)

Clifden House News

Celebrating 50 Years of Dedicated Care Clifden House Dementia Care Centre, Seaford celebrated its 50 anniversary with a party and fireworks Residents and the care team were treated to an afternoon party and disco, with everyone, irrespective of ability, taking part. Nial Joyce, whose parents founded the home in 1969, said: “It was fantastic to see so many smiling faces at the party. Even the residents who were unable to dance were tapping their toes and clearly enjoying the atmosphere. Life doesn’t end with a dementia diagnosis and it is still possible to live a life that is active and engaged. It was a wonderful day and a great way to mark this important birthday.” Guest of honour at the party was Nial Joyce’s aunt Patricia 86, a former member of the care team and still a frequent visitor to the home. Patricia said; “I have many fond memories of my time working at Clifden House and I am very proud of how the home has evolved under Nial’s management. This is more than a care home, it is a community and family and one that I am honoured to be a part of.”
Nial Joyce & Sam Hill alongside guest of honour Patricia
Originally opened as a nursing home in 1969, Clifden House has been a specialist dementia care centre since 2000. The delivery of care is focused on reducing unnecessary medication and sedation in order to release the living potential of the individual. Residents are encouraged to take part in activities and trips within their local community, to promote a fulfilled life. A packed calendar of events has been designed by Clifden House Dementia Care Centre’s activities co-ordinators, to mark the home’s 50 birthday. Tailored to suit a range of abilities, it will culminate in a garden party and staff sports day in summer 2020.

New Year’s Resolutions What’s The Point? There is a very good point to goal setting at any time of year, not just at New Year. When you set a goal for something you really want/desire to do and aim for it with specific focus, you are more likely to reach it, especially when eliciting help and support of someone who can guide and encourage you. Individual Goals: A few years ago, a yoga student of mine wanted to do a headstand free standing for a least one second for the first time in her life, before she turned 50. With this aim in mind, and with regular focus we gently worked towards building the needed strength over time. I guided her in the safe steps to follow in class and at home and she was delighted to achieve her goal. Everyone else in the class also joined in encouraging her and enjoying her success. Groups Goals: Since then, I regularly invite my yoga students to set goals of something they really want to achieve before the end of term (twelve weeks). Making sure the goals are SMART, we monitor them along the way to accommodate changing circumstances. The group focus is an added benefit and everyone achieves their goals in some way, with individual and group help and encouragement. I find great satisfaction witnessing the joy and delight on someone’s face when they achieve a skill that they have aimed for, even though it may have terrified them in the past. Also, to see how students own these new skills continue to achieve them. Setting Goals: Make it something you really want/desire to do, rather than something you ‘think’ you should do. A simple formula for goal setting is to make the goal S.M.A.R.T: Specific: What exactly do you want to achieve? Measurable: How will you know when you have achieved it, what specifically will you notice? Attainable: Is your goal possible/attainable for you within your time, money, limits, talents and abilities? Relevant: Is this something you really want to achieve and why? Timely: Timelines help us focus and take action. Is the time limit realistic for you to achieve your goal? Top 10 New Year's resolutions, according to a poll: Interesting how some have changed, most have moved up, some have moved out and reading more is new! 2018 2020 1. Exercise more (38%) Diet or eat healthier (71%) 2. Lose weight (33%) Exercise more (65%) 3. Eat more healthily (32%) Lose weight (54%) 4. Take a more active approach to health (15%) Save more and spend less (32%) 5. Learn new skill or hobby (15%) Learn a new skill or hobby (26%) 6. Spend more time on personal wellbeing (12%) Quit smoking (21%) 7. Spend more time with family and friends (12%) Read more (17%) 8. Drink less alcohol (12%) Find a new hob (16%) 9. Stop smoking (9%) Drink less alcohol (15%) 10. Other (1%) Spend more time with family and friends (13%) How I can Help YOU: The Yoga classes I teach and the skills I use along with Integrated Osteopathy and Nutrition can help with much of the above. Osteopathy Testimonial: I can honestly say I felt a reduction in pain after the first session with Lin Bridgeford. I have always suffered with back issues and was really struggling with lifting, bending and carrying after having my first baby. After further sessions I noticed other aspects changing also; I felt calmer and less stressed, and also noticed that things were shifting in my life related to work and finances. Lin made me feel very comfortable and relaxed; she is very personable and even though she is extremely busy you don’t feel like just a number, which was very important to me. Having had such good responses from her treatments we are now considering taking our 10 month daughter for treatments to assist with her immune system. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Lin. Yoga Testimonial 1: I’ve been attending Lin’s yoga class for almost a year. I have a lung condition, but it hasn’t stopped me from attempting any of the poses. I live at the top of a very steep hill, and recently when my car was off the road, I attempted the dreaded hill on foot and to my delight I found it was nowhere near as difficult as it used to be. In addition, I have a smart watch with a yoga feature and to my absolute surprise, during the last two classes I have used 550\560 calories each session. I also find I sleep better on the days I attend the yoga class. I shall certainly sign up for next year. Yoga Testimonial 1: Since I took up yoga I’ve noticed an improvement in my general levels of energy, flexibility and strength. I’ve been surprised at how energetic the Ashtanga style of yoga is, in a good way. Also I can now balance on one foot when I pull my socks on! I’m 71, so no spring chicken and recently had double hernias fixed and I’m sure the yoga before and after helped with my recovery. I also attend the Pranayama breathing sessions which are both relaxing, fun and informative. Do you know where your lungs are and how they function, well I do now! We are happy to advise you on your health matters. Friends of Beacon Hill
Beacon Hill Nature Reserve And so we roll into 2020 with as much gusto as ever and raring to get stuck into the scrub bashing. During 2019 the Friends of Beacon Hill racked up over 600 volunteer hours which is an incredible achievement. The sheep were grazing on the Nature Reserve this Spring for 83 days but unfortunately they failed to make an appearance in the Autumn. This breakdown in our maintenance program was caused by a switch of ranger, mis-communication at ranger HQ regards handover and a lack of electric fencing. Hopefully they will return in Spring 2020 to nibble down the shooting Hoary Cress and Ragwort. We have had a few new recruits in 2019 and they all came back for more as they said they enjoyed the atmosphere (oh what an atmosphere) we generate. Our latest new recruit, Don, loved it so much that after 2 sessions he looked at the weather forecast and determined next Tuesday would be raining and could we have an adhoc session this Thursday. Always willing to oblige I rang a few of our regulars and a gang of 4 met for 2 hours of blissful bramble, hawthorn and sycamore culling. If our workday schedule doesn’t work for you but you are able to gather 4 or so friends to come up just let me know and I’ll see what I can organise. We have tools, a leader and a first aider so are able to work independently of the rangers. We meet for a 2 hour session on the 2ⁿ Tuesday and 4 Friday of each month, 10AM at the Beacon Hub Café Kiosk (ex Golf Pavillion) at the south end of the Nature Reserve. Please join us in sturdy footwear, gardening gloves and, if you have them, bring secateurs. We always look forward to having new members so come along and join in the conservation conversation. Rottingdean Place Mike Laslett
Although called Rottingdean Place, for the pedants among you it is actually in Ovingdean Parish! This month you will discover how a fine building in Rottingdean was built with money earned by a German family who supplied hats to the German Kings of England! The Wagners were a wealthy Coburg family of hat makers. Fortunately, the family arrived in London at the same time as England found itself with three Hanoverian kings in succession. His family became hatters to George I, II and III, which meant of course supplying the whole army too. This meant that their business at 93 Pall Mall was most successful. Known to the Duke of Wellington through tutoring his sons, H M Wagner (1792 -1870) was appointed Vicar of Brighton by The Duke in 1824. He built several churches from his own funds, including St Paul’s, West Street, where his son Arthur (1834 -1902) would start his career.
Wykeham Terrace
Wagner eventually created a home for the sisters at Buxted in 1878 but it was not until 1912 that Rottingdean Place was built for them. The architect was Frank Cawthorn who, in partnership with Edmund Scott (1828 -1895) had designed St Bartholomew’s Church, Brighton for Wagner. Ploughing at the old convent
Old convent chapel Arthur Wagner
Arthur established an Anglican order of nuns known as The Community of The Blessed Virgin Mary in 1855 to further the work of St Paul’s. Funded solely by Wagner, they eventually ran St Mary’s Home for Female penitents in various buildings south of St Nicholas’ Church at Queens Square and Wykeham Terrace, carrying out extensive social work among young single women. The old convent
By 1974 only fifty sisters remained. The Convent closed in 1976, by which time there were only seventeen sisters, of whom eleven formed the Convent of St Mary’s at 30-32 Newlands Road. Only six remained when the home became The Newlands Court Hotel in 1989. Since 1998 that hotel has been Rottingdean Nursing Home. Meanwhile, at Rottingdean Place, a language school was established for a few years until 1981 and in 1982-3 The Church of Scientology established a Religious Education College. The building then remained vacant until conversion to residential homes with the first residents arriving in 1987. The estate offers not only apartments and homes within its beautiful grounds but also an indoor swimming pool, gym and golf driving range.

Neighbourhood Watch

January News A happy and safe New Year to all!! Not yet a Neighbourhood Watch member? Do you care about your community and want to make it a happy and safe place to live? Then one of the first things to do in 2020 is to contact us and become a member of Neighbourhood Watch. Phone Linda Hood on 01273 306441 or email nhw.sro-sec@hotmail.co.uk we look forward to hearing from you. We work very closely with the Lewes and Brighton & Hove Police. Please read the welcome note from our new B&H Police Community Support Officer Harry Scott. We look forward to working with him in 2020. Hello all, I would like to introduce myself as the new local officer as I am taking over from PCSO Rogers. I have been a PCSO for a number of years now working in different areas of Brighton. I have attended some of your community meetings over the years and filled in for PCSO Rogers at times. I look forward to working with you all as well as some of my other areas which include Rottingdean, Saltdean, Ovingdean and Brighton Marina. This area will also benefit another PCSO who is due to leave training shortly and begin his time on division in
December. Working with PCSO Rogers I have seen the fantastic work your Neighbourhood Watch does for your area. I will be working with them to help deliver messages regarding crime prevention and awareness, this is in addition to them linking in with me regarding issues that arise in the local area. If you would like to report HGV’s driving through Rottingdean, please continue sending the images and information to brightonandhove@sussex.pnn.police.uk marked in the email for the attention of PCSO Scott 38565. I would like to also share some ways of reporting crime and anti-social behaviour to Sussex police. One way is via phoning our 101 system which is when you do not require an immediate police response and the incident can be dealt with slow time. There is sometimes a long wait on this system and so for those of you that have access to the internet you can also report these kind of incidents via the Sussex police website www.sussex.police.uk . If it is an emergency and you require an immediate police response it is as always 999 for emergencies. PCSO Scott 38565 East Brighton Prevention team

Well-being Fair The Village Community Advisory Group sub-group of Rottingdean Parish Council is planning to host a Well-being Fair in the Village Hall 1.30-4PM on Saturday 1st February 2020. Our idea is to get people's attention while New Year's resolutions might be slipping from the forefront of their minds by holding an event giving useful hints and advice on how to continue a healthier, happier New Year. We envisage having stands promoting health, exercise, mindfulness and volunteering to name but a few along with the potential for a programme of taster sessions throughout the day.

The Big Fix 2020 February 15th 2020 is The Big Fix 2020, the world’s biggest day of repair, and The Deans are joining in. We are launching the Deans Repair Cafe on Feb 15th at Saltdean Community Hall, Saltdean Park Rd, BN2 8SP with the aim to encourage more people to repair and reuse items rather than replace them with new stuff.
To find our more information, whether as a volunteer or needing a repair, please contact us via our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/groups/24628426839 93570/ or email deansrepaircafe@gmail.com
Our mission is to: Fix rather than throw Keep useful items out of landfill Share and learn new skills We throw away vast amounts of stuff, even things with almost nothing wrong and which could get a new lease on life after a simple repair. The trouble is, lots of people have forgotten that they can repair things themselves or they no longer know how. Knowing how to make repairs is a skill quickly lost. Society doesn’t always show much appreciation for the people who still have this practical knowledge, and against their will they are often left standing on the sidelines. Their experience is never used, or hardly ever. Our Repair Cafe is a social event (with cake!) where you can learn to repair your things using our tools with help from volunteers. The types of things we will try and fix are bikes, clothing and textiles, crockery, small electronics, tool sharpening – the list will grow as we grow. If we cannot fix your item, you will be expected to take it home and dispose of it yourself. We hope that people will make a donation for their fixed items to cover the cost of materials. To do this, we need your help! We are asking the Deans residents if they have any skills that they can bring to the Repair Cafe to share their knowledge and expertise in a fun way that will encourage all of us to see our possessions – and ourselves – in a different light. Moonlight Healing Indian Head Massage Review
By Samantha Briffett
Early in December I went to Moonlight Healing in Rottingdean for an Indian head massage, like lots of things I’ve been trying out over the past year this was a completely new experience and I had no idea what to expect… Indian head massage is a technique which has been around since ancient times. it was originally intended to improve the condition of the scalp and hair, what I didn’t know is that the therapist also works on your neck and shoulders, it is a relatively new addition to Moonlight Healing’s repertoire so Jane was keen to find out what I’d thought of it. Jane is very careful to check for allergies to specific oils and ingredients but as I don’t have any that I’m aware of she used a wonderful smelling organic coconut oil which she selected as appropriate to my skin and hair type. For new clients there is a comprehensive health questionnaire to ensure you get the most out of your treatment with no adverse effects.
I’ve been to Moonlight healing three times now and always feel as if I’m in the safe hands of someone who is skilled and knowledgeable about what they are doing. As a therapeutic technique I found Indian head massage to be very beneficial, I came away feeling wonderfully relaxed and smelling very nice too! Moonlight Healing are based conveniently in Rottingdean, there is a bus stop right outside and on-street parking nearby. Jane charges £30 for Indian head massage and can be contacted on: 07395 832085 jane@moonlighthealing.co.uk www.moonlighthealing.co.uk
After getting comfortable in the treatment area I was expecting Jane to immediately start working on my head but she started on my back and shoulders, my left side felt much more sensitive than my right, though interestingly all the tension seemed to be in my neck on the right side. I loved the shoulder massage, I could feel aches that I’d forgotten were there as they released, and Jane commented afterwards that this was exactly what she had done. After working all the way down to my hands Jane started to massage my head, and scalp, this was very invigorating especially when she worked on my temples and the pressure points on my face. Thankfully I don’t get headaches very often but if I did then Indian head massage would be my treatment of choice for these, it addresses all the areas where tension arises and gently melts it away. It seemed all too soon that the massage was over, which is always a good sign. Jane advised me to drink plenty of water when I got home, avoid alcohol for 24 hours and to leave the oil in my hair overnight if possible.

Review of 2019 Happy New Year and thank you! A round-up. Thank you for your continued support for the cinema. We are told by our customers that it is a valued community facility, and this is very gratifying for all the volunteers. Thank you again for your enthusiasm for film. Cinema Saltdean is a not-for-profit community facility, run entirely by volunteers for almost 9 years. In addition to providing entertainment by bringing you films that you may have missed, or have already seen and liked, the cinema has a charitable function too. The December screening is always the charity screening: and last month was no exception. Every penny of income from the evening goes to our chosen charity. Cinema Saltdean subsidises the evening by paying for the screening licence and all the other normal operating costs. This year, St Nicholas Church generously waived our hall rental charge. You will be interested to hear that you raised £482.90 for The Brighton Clock Tower Sanctuary. The charity cares for people aged 16-25 years, in Brighton, who are homeless. The Sanctuary provides many facilities: youngsters can cook a hot meal, have a shower, wash their clothes and use the computer. The Sanctuary also offers
support, advice and guidance; and offers a counselling service, to help the young people to focus on their future. If you were not able to come to the cinema last month but would like to donate to the Clock Tower Sanctuary, you can do so by following the links on the Cinema Saltdean Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/CinemaSaltd ean/ If you prefer, you can donate directly to the Sanctuary via https://www.thects.org.uk/donate/ Let’s see if we can make it more than £500 in total! Thank you in advance for your support. Over the last four years, Cinema Saltdean filmgoers have raised more than £2,000 for various charities. We take this opportunity to thank you on behalf of all who have benefited from your generosity – and look forward to many more successful years of raising funds for deserving causes. For operational reasons, we are not screening this month but, fear not! We will be back with renewed vigour for our February screening, on Tuesday 25. Watch out for further details in the February edition of the Deans Magazine; and on our website https://www.cinemasaltdean.org/ and our Fb page. Jon

St Patrick’s Woodingdean

St Patrick’s, Woodingdean Celebrates 50 Years On Saturday, 7 December, the Catholic church of St Patrick, located at Broad Green, Woodingdean, celebrated its Golden Jubilee with an exhibition and other displays to which the public were warmly invited. Varied refreshments, including seasonal fare and mulled wine, were on offer throughout the event, which was held between 10.30 and 2.30.
Parishioners rightly rejoice in their 50-year milestone and look forward to their cherished church being attended for many more years in the future. Douglas d'Enno (Thanks to Irene Green and Bernadette Skinner for additional information).
The celebration continued on Sunday, when the parishioners welcomed the Bishop of Arundel and Brighton, Richard Moth. He concelebrated Mass with other local clergy and in his homily to a packed church warmly acknowledged the dedication and steadfastness of parishioners and clergy, past and present. The displays on the Saturday took the form of information boards which colourfully set out the history of the parish over the last half-century. Much of the information was based on the history lovingly compiled by parishioner Don Young (19312019). The boards described the succession of priests who had served the parish down the years, as well as key events and the important contribution made by pioneering lay parishioners. Much interest was shown – especially by long-time residents – in an aerial view on display of Woodingdean dating from the early 1960s. The historical aspect was also vividly illustrated by the albums laid out on a long table by two local historians possessing a detailed knowledge of the area, namely Peter Mercer and David Cuthbertson. They answered many questions and also chatted to a number of residents whom they had not met before and who were even able to supplement the detailed information laid out.
Some of the information boards on the left and the 'local history table' on the right, manned by Peter Mercer (pointing) and David Cuthbertson on his right.
The church of St Patrick is not only a centre of worship but also a venue for a number of non-church activities during the week, such as poetry reading, singing, and children’s dance; it is also the meeting place of the Four Deans Stroke Club and Churches Together in Woodingdean. The church was actually built in 1958-59 as the Anglican Church of the Resurrection. In 1969, it was acquired by the Catholic diocese of Arundel and Brighton and renamed 'St Patrick's'. Over the years it was extended (the sanctuary stands in an extension dating from 1972, the year the adjacent priest’s house was built, and a parish room and kitchen were added 10 years later). Good relations are enjoyed between St Patrick's Church and other local churches, with which joint services and celebrations are occasionally held.
Parishioners and visitors mingle in the church hall. Parish priest, Monsignor Benny O'Shea, (right) intently studies the display.

January Lions Update As we start a New Year, we are pleased to celebrate ideas generated by our young people to improve the world for the better. Roar 2019, funded by local Lions clubs, invites primary schools to enter teams to look at entrepreneurial ideas that can address big issues that face the world today. The competition requires the children to generate ideas, to formulate and design, build a model, promote their project and to finally make a presentation to pitch their world changing idea. We were pleased to support three of the primary schools in our area enabling them to each enter a team and helped judge the team projects in the schools to choose a winner to go forward to the South East final. Well, at the recent final of Roar 2019, at Wakehurst Place, our local schools attended and put up excellent displays for their entries. We were delighted when Rudyard Kipling Primary School, one of our supported schools, came a welldeserved third in the competition. The description of the winning projects will be turned into a book and published on Amazon. We would like to congratulate all the schools that entered – everyone who took part was a star.
At a recent celebration day at Lustrells Vale Co-op we were pleased to receive a cheque for the balance of the £6,446 for our social inclusion project that will be taking our senior citizens on various outings this year. As this is the January edition of the Deans Magazine, Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions Club would like to wish all the readers of this magazine a prosperous New Year with, above all, good health. Also, the Lions would like to thank all the Deans Magazine readers who supported them during 2019. If you would like more information on any of our service or fundraising activities, or you would like to lodge an interest in helping us at our fundraising events please contact Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions on 0345 833 9617 or email at info@rottingdeanandsaltdeanlions.org.uk. If you would like to make a donation to us please click on the ‘Donate’ button on the home page of our website: (www.rottingdeanandsaltdeanlions.org.uk). Lion Roger Bluff
Last month we once again entertained 71 senior citizens at our 2019 Christmas lunches. If you or anyone you know would like to join our mailing list for invites to these lunches or our coach outings, please contact us. Other major service activities during last year included the ‘Message in a Bottle’ scheme, spectacle recycling and we have donated a book to every pupil in the reception class at our five primary schools. Also, we participated in ‘It’s a Knockout’, organised by the Lions and providing lots of fun for local people with learning difficulties. To sustain our service activities, Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions will have another busy year in 2020 raising funds and supporting charities and projects in the local community – let’s hope this will continue for a long time to come. The Rottingdean Lions Fayre (13 June) and our Saltdean Gala (18 July) are good examples, and we do take part in the Rottingdean Village Fair. Whilst being immensely successful events they are labour intensive and voluntary help at these events is always welcome. We particularly need help setting up and clearing away, just a few hours each day. If you know a Lion please have a chat with them if you are able to help out at an event this year. Or you can use the contact details listed below. Help us make 2020 our best fundraising year yet. The Lions are pleased to announce that we have been chosen again as a beneficiary of the Co-op Local Community Fund. Our cause is a personal development project that will help young people, youth organisations and schools. If you are a Co-op member please support us at membership.coop.co.uk/causes.

Pain Therapist Penny Koster Myofascial Release - the gentle release of connective tissue. I have a beautiful log cabin in my garden where I work from, it is an incredibly relaxing and gentle space. I have been a therapist for many years, I have a lot of different qualifications and training, but the therapy I am most passionate about and know first‐hand works completely is myofascial release, myofascia is the connective tissue which joins everything together, covers everything, fills all the gaps holds you together, it has the memory of your life, it relays messages to your brain faster than the nervous System, every single thing that happens to you in your life whether it be good or bad is stored in your subconscious and your fascial system, The fascia is like a giant web made up of collagen, elastin and ground substance it covers you from top to toe with no orifices unlike your skin, it moves constantly within your body, it penetrates, covers, protects every organ, muscle, ligament, tendon, bones everything- we are fascia, scar tissue is damaged fascia that has gone hard and dehydrated, that is why generally women get more lower back problems then men because they have hysterectomies, C-sections and end up with fascia that is damaged, dehydrated and hard (scar tissue) so no longer moves and consequently pulls on areas like the lower back, fascia can become hardened dehydrated and stop moving and therefore cause problems, discomfort, pain, disease for many many different reasons I generally call it life. Another example because we are one complete unit everything is connected you could have a pain in your shoulder and the pain could possibly originate in your lower back, or maybe your neck or both. Myofascial release is being called the missing link and I passionately believe this to be true, I believe in the not too distant future everyone will be having these treatments. The cause of discomfort, pain is the collagen layer of the fascia, this is the layer that has to be released from its stuck, dehydrated, no longer moving position! An Analogy if you step on a hosepipe the flow is impaired. I am highly
trained in myofascial release, I am trained to Body read to know where the problem is and then to un-stick it.. The whole world needs to know about this treatment! I feel very passionately that everyone should understand how it works, and as much as possible be able to do it to themselves and each other. There is no such thing as 'I have that pain because I'm getting old' No-one needs to have pain! Exceptions being if you break a leg or have an accident et cetera, I give these treatments which are extremely powerful but at the Same time very gentle, I also educate people so that they can self-care in the future and when they have a pain they understand why it's happening, and what they can do about it, ABSOLUTELY NO ONE HAS TO BE IN PAIN. Everyone is different sometimes it takes longer than others, IT IS WORTH THE WAIT! If you're interested in having a treatment and want to learn more about myofascial release and myself please go to: www.trigger-points.me.uk or phone me on 07951 117826
