Welcome
Welcome to the June Edition I’d like to start off by thanking the guys at The Queen Victoria Pub in Rottingdean for being so helpful when my motorbike broke down in May, they allowed me to store the bike in their alleyway over night to keep it safe till I could get it recovered the next day. It was quite a wait for the breakdown truck so I was able to visit the lovely Kipling Gardens and I dropped into Shane’s kitchen for coffee, they are featured on page 65 of this edition, and definitely worth a visit. Coincidentally our cover picture this month was also taken at Kipling Gardens By Colette Langton. There are lots of local events listed in this edition, and we hope you are able to go and visit some of them, I’m sure that the organisers will welcome you.

Whatsapp Images Mobile phones are being used less for talking and more for taking, and sharing, photographs. How many photos you can save on your phone will depend in large upon what phone you have. Typically, mobiles range from 8GB to a whopping 512GB, and this relates to how much storage space you will have. GiffGaff for example report that 1GB of storage space will allow you roughly 200 images. Your phone automatically saves any images sent to you via WhatsApp – unless you change your settings. If you’re lucky enough to have a 512GB phone all those WhatsApp images won’t necessarily drag you down – but they also may not be images you particularly want stored on your phone. If you’re on the lower end of the spectrum those images could be more than a nuisance and be robbing you of valuable storage space. So how do you stop your phone saving all those silly memes and GIF’s your WhatsApp groups keep uploading? Android: ● Go into WhatsApp and, in the top-left corner, you should see three stacked dots.
● Click this and you will see the Settings option. ● From here choose the Chats option, which you should click into ● Look for the option to turn on or off “media visibility”. By turning this off you will stop WhatsApp automatically saving photos, videos and GIFs to your Android phone. iPhone: ● Go into your WhatsApp on your iPhone and in the bottom-right corner of your screen, you should see a Settings icon. This looks like a gear or cog symbol. ● Click into Settings, then choose the Chats button. ● Here you should then see an option to switch on or off the “save to camera roll” setting. To stop WhatsApp automatically saving photos, videos and GIFs to your iPhone’s camera roll turn this option off. ● Should you regret not having those WhatsApp pics to hand on your phone anymore you can simply reverse the process and any new images will be saved once more.

Clifden House News

92 Year Old Brings Past To Life For Pupils Pupils from Seaford Head Lower School experienced a ‘Living History’ lesson, with a talk from Clifden House resident Verna Rose, 92.
and of empowering the older generation and giving them a voice too. We are working across the county in order to strengthen community resilience”
During her talk to the Lower School, pupils aged 11-16 heard about Verna’s childhood in Canada, where she grew up and the impact that World War 2 had on her and her brother. Verna moved to the UK in her 20’s and taught at a primary school in Brixton, where she was the instigator of teaching French to younger children. Despite now having dementia, Verna still retains much of her long-term memory and was delighted to answer the many questions that the pupils had.
Clifden House in Seaford is a family-run dementia care centre that has developed into a leader in specialist dementia care, offering residents a vibrant and active environment. It is home to a range of people from different backgrounds, taking part in everyday activities, just like in any other family home or community.
Reflecting upon Verna Rose’s talk, Clifden House activities coordinator Deena McCormack said: “This project really embodies our ethos here at Clifden House. A mainstay of our delivery of care lies in promoting a fulfilled life. We aim to ensure that every resident is able to engage as much as they desire with the world around them, both within and outside the home. It was a joy to see Verna access memories that she may not have otherwise revisited and pass them on to pupils in the local community.”
This Living History project was supported by the Personal and Community Resilience programme from East Sussex County Council. It recognises the strengths of people and communities and how they can be utilised and built upon. All areas of East Sussex are covered by dedicated Locality Link Workers, liasing with frontline health and social care professionals to better access community-based support for their clients.
Verna Rose said: “ I really enjoyed the experience and was impressed with the children’s interest and well thought out questions. Thank you to everyone for a most enjoyable day.” Min Stone, Locality Link Worker for Seaford said: “As part of my role, I spend a lot of time with voluntary organisations and community groups building links and connections. By facilitating people like Verna, a resident of Clifden House dementia care centre, with the opportunity to pass on their stories to local pupils, we are helping to bring two generations together, ensure that first hand accounts of past events live on, If you have a local article to publish email info@deansmagazine.co.uk

Telscombe Village Club Telscombe Village is a hidden gem nestling in the South Downs. Virtually unchanged for nearly a hundred years, the village owes much of its charm to one man‌ Ambrose Gorham was the local squire and village benefactor between 1885 and 1933. A professional bookie and race horse owner, he established a successful racing stables in the village from where his mare Shannon Lass won the Grand National in 1902. He installed running water and electricity to the village and provided the Village Club as a community facility for his racing staff and village residents. It was rumoured that Gorham set up the Club to stop his lads and the villagers going to nearby pubs, getting drunk and spilling the beans about his race horses. Ambrose Gorham owned a substantial amount of property in the village and a large area of surrounding farm land. On his death in 1933 he left his estate
including the Village Club to be held in trust. The Gorham Gift was intended to keep the village as it was in Gorham's lifetime, preserving its tranquil nature for the benefit of the villagers and residents in the nearby communities of Telscombe Cliffs, Saltdean and Peacehaven. Set in an attractive lawned garden with feature well, the Club has a well-appointed kitchen with cooking facilities, a large bar area and a splendid inglenook fireplace as well as modern central heating. The Village Club is currently managed by a committee of local residents chaired by the vicar of the village church of St Laurence. Every year, the Club hosts a Summer Party, a Harvest Supper and Christmas Children's Party for local residents. It is also available to hire for private events. If you would like to attend any of our events or book the Club for your own celebration, event or activity Please contact Mr Alan Baker, Booking Secretary on info@alanbakeronline.com for details.

Bridgeford’s Best Bites
Emotions In The Body Do we hold emotions in our body, how do they get there and what can we do to release them? Neuroscientist Professor Candice B. Pert, PhD wrote about this in her book 'Molecules of Emotion' why we feel the way we feel. Basically, she proved that the neurotransmitters, neuropeptides and receptors responsible for laying down memory in the brain are found throughout the body. Chinese medicine has taught for centuries that we store emotions in the body, attributing a particular emotion to a specific organ. Therapists working with the body on a deep level, even working gently recognise that 'the issue is in the tissue'. In her amazing book 'A Change of Heart' Claire Sylvia describes her experiences after a heart and lung transplant. "She had a vivid dream about a young man she felt strongly was her donor, at the same time she found herself fighting urges to eat fried chicken and drink beer, neither of which she had like in the past. Troubled but excited, she tracked down the family of her donor - the 'family of her heart' - who confirmed what she already suspected: their late son, Tim, had loved nothing better than fried chicken and beer. After talking to other transplant patients who had similar experiences, she became convinced that some form of 'cellular memory' exists and that when vital organs are transferred from one body to the other, cravings and feelings, and perhaps even memories and dreams are also transferred." An example is when we experience the loss of a loved one, the 'heartache' of bereavement can be a very physical experience. Such extreme emotion is too much for us to fully process in one go, so our bodies very cleverly seem to store the emotion in the heart as a protective measure. The healthy option is to then process and release this emotion at a later date when we have more resources to cope with it. Too many stored emotions can start to take their toll and we may find we start getting pain. The heart and lungs attach to the neck and effectively 'hang' off it and the heart attaches like a sling to the base of the skull, so we may start to experience neck and shoulder aches.
quested help this. With respectful and sensitive treatment, however the body will decide when it is ready to release stored emotion and surprisingly this is often not necessarily accompanied by an expression of emotion, though it may be. It is possible that a person may shed a tear or cry, though often they do not and report later that they feel better about a situation or event and may be more able to talk about it since treatment, they may express emotion later or have a dream that helps the process. In my experience, working with the organs seems to release more emotion than any other part of the body, so it seems that Chinese had something to teach us about that. As well as Osteopathy, I have other gentle yet powerful skills to help deal with emotions. Flower remedies help to release emotions and we have probably all heard of Rescue Remedy which is a combination of Bach remedies to help in a crisis; each remedy can help in a specific way as Dr Edward Bach discovered after observing people's response to flowers brought to them in hospital. I am fortunate to have a cupboard full of wonderful remedies from around the world. Sound therapy or Vibrational healing using tuning forks has many applications as well as helping to balance the energies and flows in the body to release stuck energy and emotion. Communication techniques from NLP and Hypnotherapy can help a person to feel relaxed and comfortable to release held emotion when they are ready. The patient is always in control of their own process and how we deal with it. We are happy to advise you on your health matters. In my experience, particularly in working with organs (visceral osteopathy) it seems that we can store any emotion in any organ; if the 'fear' organ (kidney) is already full, we can store our fear in another organ or tissue where there is space. The choice of storage location may be related to surgeries, injuries, scars and body positions when an extreme emotion is felt. Our emotions and how we deal with them is a very personal and individual experience with no two people or situations alike. In treatment, I do not go 'looking' for people's emotions or how to release them unless they have specifically re-

Friends of Beacon Hill
Beacon Hill Nature Reserve One sunny afternoon in May whilst on the evening dog walk we came across our shepherd, Sam, shearing the sheep. We’ve never seen this on Beacon Hill before and it was like watching a master at work. With a team of 3 men and a few sheepdogs to keep order the sheep were quickly rounded up into a holding pen. Sam and his assistant were harnessed into bungee-type apparatus so they could bend over with their upper body weight suspended and set to work. Gently but firmly each sheep was flipped on it’s back and sheared in approximately 2 minutes flat. Once they realised that there was no escape from their prone position the sheep actually took it like ladies and remained very calm. A number of the sheep had flystrike, a condition where parasitic flies lay eggs on soiled wool leading to maggots eating into their flesh. This needs to be treated before it turns into something more serious and given that rain was forecast it was decided to shear the whole flock rather than spray them. Unfortunately the temperature dropped dramatically overnight and the next morning it was decided to remove the sheep from the hill and back to the farm. Within 3 hours of initial concern being raised all the sheep had been rounded up and moved off. The volunteers moved the electric fencing to the bramble experiment and 5 days
later the sheep (albeit a different flock as our original girls were requisitioned to Sheepcote Valley) returned to complete the spring graze for this year. 2019 spring grazing was a great success with the woolly ones munching their way through the hoary cress that had again reared its ugly head on the new extension area. The volunteers are hand clearing the area by the windmill and picnic benches as this section wasn’t on the spring grazing plan. Only time will tell if the ragwort grows to flower but if last year was anything to go by the grazing will have nipped it in the bud. Festival season will soon be upon us and we’ll be manning stands at the Ovingdean Village Fair on 22ⁿ June and the Rottingdean Village Fair on 3 August. Come along to say hello and find out how you can join in the conservation conversation. We meet for a 2 hour session on the 2ⁿ Tuesday and 4 Friday of each month, 10AM at the Beacon Hub carpark. We always look forward to having new members so come and join in the fun. FOBeaconHill@gmail.com 01273 983000 www.facebook.com/beaconhillrottingdean

Brighton Waldorf School

Celebrating 100 Years of International Education The Brighton Waldorf School, located in Kemptown, has marked the Waldorf 100, a world-wide celebration of the international Waldorf education curriculum. Commenting on the School’s participation, School Director Damian Mooncie said: “We are celebrating the Waldorf 100 in Brighton as we believe it is important to mark and commemorate the one hundredth year of Waldorf education.” As part of the international Waldorf 100 activities, Brighton Waldorf pupils have planted a celebratory tree representing the pupils’ learning journey and their physical and spiritual nourishment and transformation. The tree will also help contribute to the environment, assist with improving air quality, climate enrichment, help conserve water, preserve soil and support wildlife.
importantly young people themselves have contributed to how the Waldorf education is today. Damian concluded: “The Brighton Waldorf School provides a learning home where children can develop all the credentials inherent in education, whilst also experiencing a free and happy childhood. By supporting our pupils and helping them to participate in a project that highlights the Waldorf 100, it gives them a wonderful opportunity to engage in a positive way with their own experiences with the environment.” For further information or to experience what the school has on offer the next Brighton Waldorf School Open day is on Saturday 18 May 2019 between 10:00am and 14:00pm, Roedean Road, Brighton.
Damian added: “Planting a tree represents putting down roots, future growth and resilience. It will connect our pupils to the earth and give everyone at the School an improved awareness of the environment. At our School, we are dedicated to balancing the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of each of our pupils in a way that gives them confidence and resilience, so the symbol of planting a tree on our grounds seemed an ideal way to celebrate the Waldorf 100. “We are also celebrating our thirty-fifth year in Brighton which is a significant milestone in the development of our School, and we will be taking every opportunity to celebrate this and the Waldorf 100 throughout May.” The Waldorf education curriculum has grown over its 100 years and many people have contributed towards its development, most

Challoners Mike Laslett
There is evidence that Rottingdean had a very early manor house near the seafront, recalled in the name Manor Terrace for the Lower High Street. The oldest existing Manor House however is Challoners, which is probably the oldest house in Rottingdean, dating back to 1456 when it was conveyed to Thomas Chaloner. Challoners, the Manor Farm, was the largest of four farms, farming over 3,000 acres and employing a large portion of the village work force. It played a large part in the social life of these workers, including holding village fairs in the early 20 Century. In 1541 the Manor was conveyed to Hugh Ockenden and towards the end of the 16 Century the main portion of the present house with its fine Horsham slate roof was built and

various barns were constructed. The extensive cellars, whose passages probably led to the beach for smuggling purposes, still remain bricked up under the house! The house then passed into the Beard family and was in their hands for about 300 years. Shortly after The Battle of Trafalgar of 1805, the house was substantially altered with the windows being renewed and the remarkable ‘Trafalgar’ window added above the porch. During the twentieth century the house was divided but it was beautifully restored as one house in 1965. You can enjoy the beautiful gardens, with their ancient mulberry tree, on 7 July between 11.30 am and 4.00 pm through the generosity of the present owner.

Holiday Safety This time of the year thoughts naturally start to turn to holidays - so, dream holiday or short break - book it safely, and don’t become a victim of holiday fraud! Thousands of people in the UK become victims of holiday fraud every year, duped by fake websites, advertisements, emails, social media posts, texts or phone calls. They lose their holiday and their hard-earned money. Holiday fraud can apply equally to exotic, sun-drenched holidays or UK caravan breaks, ski chalets or pilgrimages, city breaks or flights and train journeys. 10 top tips for Safe Holiday Booking to avoid holiday fraud: 1. Thoroughly research accommodation, flights, cruises or package holidays advertised on private advertisements, to check that they are authentic. 2. Check that accommodation really exists by finding it on Google Maps and looking for third-party reviews and recommendations. If you can, call the owner/agent directly. If the number is not provided, email and request it. 3. Check reviews on TripAdvisor or similar sites.
4. Remember that paying by credit card means more chance of getting your money back if something goes wrong. 5. Never transfer money in payment for accommodation or travel. If you do and it’s a fraud, your bank will not be obliged to refund your money. 6. Confirm that travel agents and tour operators are members of trade associations such as ABTA or ATOL. You can do this on these bodies’ websites. 7 If paying online, type in the website address you know to be correct (instead of following a link), ensure the payment page is secure (begins with ‘https’ and has a locked padlock in the browser window frame). 8. Be wary of unusually cheap holidays or high deposits. 9. Check terms and conditions prior to making any payment. 10. Keep confirmations and payment receipts, and check statements for irregular entries. Stan & Ollie
(Cert PG)
Steve Coogan & John C. Reilly In 1937 Laurel and Hardy were the biggest act around. ‘Stan and Ollie’ is set in the 1950s, when things were different, long after their heyday in Hollywood. The boys arrive in the UK looking for a comeback, often playing small, dingy venues, staying in poor hotels and playing to part-filled auditoria. Someone in the film, buying a ticket at the Box Office, asks ‘who’s playing Laurel and Hardy?’ They are astonished when they are told it’s the real Laurel and Hardy on stage! Many at that time thought that they had retired. Whilst at one point it’s looking like the end of the road for the duo, there are surprises to come, as Stan and Ollie work their magic on audiences all over again. The film treats us to famous routines, faithfully and brilliantly re-created, as well as a terrific rendition of their hit song ‘The Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia’.
Arianda (‘Midnight in Paris’, Florence Foster Jenkins); and of Mrs Hardy, by Shirley Henderson (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’, ‘Bridget Jones’s Diary’). Rufus Jones (‘W1A’, ‘Eric, Ernie and Me’) is Bernard Delfont, who conveys the sometimes seedy and often frantic world of light entertainment in the 50’s. Listen out for name checks on upcoming star Norman Wisdom!
A lesser film would have wallowed in telling the story of Ollie’s gambling, the divorce settlements, of which they were both subjects, but this is a much more subtle affair. We are given some background but it’s never laboured. For example unlike Chaplin, Keaton and Lloyd - Laurel and Hardy never owned their own films. This meant that they were ‘under contract’ and paid rates that were far lower than the going rate. Snippets of information are skilfully sprinkled through the film, opening a door that shines light into the pair’s back story.
Whether or not you are a Laurel and Hardy fan, there is much to be enjoyed here.
The film is as much about friendship, love and hope as it is about comedy. The love and friendship between the boys, for their act; and the love between their respective partners who, I suspect, held the working-partnership together in stormy times. There was always the hope of yet another big film. Stan was the creative force in the act, writing scripts and gags that invariably delighted the fans. There is poignancy here, too, as we learn that Stan continued writing scripts for the act, even after Ollie had passed away – belief indeed.
Jon Next month, we’ll be looking at ‘Green Book’: racism, music and laughs in ‘the deep south’.
The film, though, rightly belongs to Steve Coogan and John C Reilley in the central performances. Forget ‘Dead Ringers’ and ‘The Now Show’, these performances transcend impressions. Both are wholly convincing; you could be forgiven for believing that you are looking at newsreel of the originals. Coogan and Riley manage to always strike the right note, capturing variously: love, respect, tetchiness and a special protective-friendship of each other that must have been the glue that held the partnership together. The script is sharp, elegant and generous enough to spread around the good lines. Applause needs also to go to the supporting actors. Watch out for the excellent portrayal of Mrs Laurel by Nina

Handbell Ringing at Peacehaven The Psalty Ringers team is a small relaxed and very friendly group of handbell ringers. We would be delighted to welcome new members so here is a little bit about ourselves. We meet every Thursday from 2 p.m to 4 p.m in the Charles Neville room in the Meridian Community Centre at Peacehaven. You do not have to be a musician or even have to read music in order to enjoy handbell ringing. We have a lot of fun and laughter and
enjoy ourselves. There is a short coffee break halfway through. If you like the sound of this, please just turn up when we return from our Easter break on 2nd May where you can be sure of a very warm welcome. If there is anything you would like to ask or to talk about the group please phone Margaret 01273 585398 or Anita 01273303057 We look forward to seeing you very soon.

Rottingdean Lions Fayre Arena events during the day will include dancing, karate and various other activities demonstrated by local organisations. The Lions Fayre is held on The Green in Rottingdean. This year the Brighton School of Singing and the Brighton Waldorf School with their dance routines will be joining us along with The Brighton Boogie Man; and we are pleased to announce that for the first time Sarah Jones and the Fishermen will be playing for us.

Pain Therapist Penny Koster Myofascial Release - the gentle release of connective tissue, I have a beautiful log cabin in my garden where I work from, it is an incredibly relaxing and gentle space. I have been a therapist for many years, I have a lot of different qualifications and training, but the therapy I am most passionate about and know first‐hand works completely is myofascial release, Myo‐fascial is the connective tissue which joins everything together, covers everything, fills all the gaps holds you together, it has the memory of your life, it relays messages to your brain faster than the nervous System, every single thing that happens to you in your life whether it be good or bad is stored in your subconscious and your fascial system, The fascia is like a giant web made up of collagen, elastin and ground substance it covers you from top to toe with no orifices unlike your skin, it moves constantly within your body, it penetrates, covers, protects every organ, muscle, ligament, tendon, bones everything- we are fascia, scar tissue is damaged fascia that has gone hard and dehydrated, that is why generally women get more lower back problems then men because they have hysterectomies, C-sections and end up with fascia that is damaged, dehydrated and hard (scar tissue) so no longer moves and consequently pulls on areas like the lower back, fascia can become hardened dehydrated and stop moving and therefore cause problems, discomfort, pain, disease for many many different reasons I generally call it life. Another example because we are one complete unit everything is connected you could have a pain in your shoulder and the
pain could possibly originate in your lower back, or maybe your neck or both. Myofascial release is being called the missing link and I passionately believe this to be true, I believe in the not too distant future everyone will be having these treatments, The cause of discomfort, pain is the collagen layer of the fascia, this is the layer that has to be released from its stuck, dehydrated, no longer moving position! An Analogy if you step on a hosepipe the flow is impaired. I am highly trained in myofascial release, I am trained to Body read to know where the problem is and then to un-stick it.. The whole world needs to know about this treatment! I feel very passionately that everyone should understand how it works, and as much as possible be able to do it to themselves and each other. There is no such thing as 'I have that pain because I'm getting old' No-one needs to have pain! Exceptions being if you break a leg or have an accident et cetera, I give these treatments which are extremely powerful but at the Same time very gentle, I also educate people so that they can self-care in the future and when they have a pain they understand why it's happening, and what they can do about it, ABSOLUTELY NO ONE HAS TO BE IN PAIN. Everyone is different sometimes it takes longer than others, IT IS WORTH THE WAIT! If you're interested in having a treatment and want to learn more about myofascial release and myself please go to: www.trigger-points.me.uk or phone me on 07951 117826
