Welcome

Welcome to the November Edition This month’s edition has really gone to the dogs thanks to photos from two local photographers we have included on pages 63 and 69. I have to be honest we are glad to feature our furry friends in the magazine, we have two rescue dogs ourselves who we would not be without despite them being a pair of pests! I was speaking to one of our regular contributors recently who said that the number of members in their group had grown as a result of their editorial in the magazine, this is great news as it means that we are achieving our aim of having a positive influence on the community. If you would like your club or group to grow then please get in touch we would love to help. I’ll end here to allow space for yet another dog picture! Anti-Bullying Week November 2018 heralds Anti-bullying Week. Sadly, bullying is still prevalent in our society with children perhaps the most vulnerable. Where once you could at least leave the bullies outside, now their disruptive behaviour can follow you where ever you are, intrude on your life both day and night, and can be spread online to become “viral” with alarming speed. Cyber Bullying In a survey recently carried out by BullyingUK 56% of young people said they have seen others be bullied online and 42% have felt unsafe online. This form of intimidation is carried out via smartphones and tablets. Facebook, XBox Live, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat and other chat rooms can be fun and a positive experience. But what do you do when things go wrong? Stay Safe Make sure your passwords contain a combination of letters, lowercase, uppercase, symbols and numbers. Consider logging out of any sites when you’re not actively using them – it only takes a moment for someone to grab your phone off you.
Think Twice Before you post anything online consider the impact your words may have and think twice before posting once it’s out there you can’t take it back. If you post abuse about anyone else online or if you send threats, you can be traced by the police. Report It If you see someone being bullied online, in whatever form, tell someone. We all have a duty to play in “policing” our online networks; you can tell a parent, or a teacher, or call BullyinUK on 0808 800 2222 if you’re in doubt about anything. Cyber bullying isn’t limited to children – there are some well documented cases of celebrities closing their social media channels due to persistent abusive messages. As adults we have a duty of care to our children, so make sure both you and they know and understand that bullying is unacceptable full stop – and that they know what to do if someone is abusive to them.

Bridgeford’s Best Bites
Visceral Osteopathy Many problems and symptoms associated with the organs of the body can be helped with Osteopathy. If you kneel on all fours, basically all the organs are suspended from the spine, so they can impact on the structure too. Osteopathy has for many years been used to help a variety of problems related to the internal organs of the body, as well as pain form the muscles and joints. Osteopaths help more than back pain, sports injuries and "mechanical" problems. Many patients are not aware that Osteopathy can be used to help internal problems, as they imagine most of the treatments is to the spine. However, many osteopathic techniques resemble soft tissue massage and include many gentle manipulations and stretches that can be applied to all the tissues of the body, as well as many of the organs in the abdomen, chest and pelvis. Osteopathic treatments help improve circulation of blood and lymph, to reduce congestion in the various parts of the body and also help reduce irritation to the nervous system. In this way, Osteopaths can help the body function in a more efficient way and can help the organs work more effectively, thus promoting health and reducing symptoms. Manipulations and treatment to the organs of the body is called Visceral Manipulation (as "viscera" is another name for organs). Osteopaths who use this approach have been called Visceral Osteopaths, though their approach is in fact a normal part of Osteopathy as a whole. Visceral manipulations are gentle and may range from very small movements to deeper stretches. These movements should not be painful and care is taken not to irritate the sensitive tissues. The Osteopath will be aware of possible contra-indications and will treat symptoms where appropriate. If there is a recognised medical complaint this is taken into account. Sometimes the Osteopath will need to correspond with the doctor to clarify diagnosis, although this is not always necessary and your permission is asked first. Additionally, many problems affecting the organs of the body are described as "functional". This means that there is no clear medical pathology and therefore no clear medical treatment. However, Osteopathy may be able to help as many "functional" conditions seem to be associated with tension and poor movement of the organs, which can often be released with gentle manipulations. Many problems of the organs can be eased to some extent with symptoms being reduced to more manageable levels, or sometimes even resolved completely. This type of approach may be useful for conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, intestinal cramps or bloating, where manipulations can ease spasm and tension in the
intestine, allowing food to pass more freely from one part of the gut to the next and it can relieve some cases of indigestion and reflux. It may also help with the pain associated with adhesions and post-operative discomfort and pain, where manipulations can gently ease the contractions around the scar tissue and help the organs and tissues move a little more freely. Respiratory problems such as asthma and bronchitis can be relieved, as many of the muscles of the chest become tight, making breathing more difficult. Relaxing the ribs and chest can help the lungs function more freely, thus reducing some of the distress associated with these conditions and improve breathing. Exercises can also be given to help the patient breathe more effectively. Many pelvic problems, such as urinary incontinence, mild prolapse, some types of pelvic pain and some gynaecological symptoms can be eased by improving the way the pelvis and the pelvic organs move. Osteopaths can also work on the pelvic floor, which is a group of muscles at the bottom of the pelvis, which act to support all the pelvic organs. Some pelvic problems in men such as chronic prostatitis, may also be relieved. These are just some of the problems that may be helped with Osteopathy. If you are wondering whether Osteopathy can help you, or someone you know, please ask for further details. We are happy to advise you on your health matters. Friends of Beacon Hill
Beacon Hill Nature Reserve Well well well our Introduction to Scrub Bash Weekend was a fantastic success. We held 4 sessions over 2 days, attracting a total of 35 volunteers. This equates to 70 working hours, the equivalent of 1 full time ranger working for 2 weeks. How cool is that. A huge thank you to those that turned out to help. On Friday we were joined by Neil’s Nomads, a group of volunteers that meet each Friday and “parachute” into green spaces across the Brighton and Hove area to assist various Friends of groups. We had a number of newbies along with the trusty faithful. The scrub pile was the biggest we have ever seen, 2 truck loads that Ranger Will took back to Stanmer Park, and we cleared an impressive 550 square metres of land. All in all a great weekend spent working with a wonderful group of people in the beautiful surroundings of Beacon Hill Nature Reserve. The sun shone down on us all weekend and to coin a phrase – it was Fab-u-lous dahling.
No experience necessary just bring along a smile and you too can be part of the conservation conversation.
There’s still a lot of work to be done on the hill removing bramble and scrub. With a little bit of elbow grease our popping crew pop those pesky hawthorn roots pop right out of the ground whilst the dedicated bramblers tug untold metres of this quickly spreading plant from our glorious chalk downland.
If you would like further information we can be found at :E-mail : FOBeaconHill@gmail.com Telephone : 01273 983000 Facebook : www.facebook.com/beaconhillrottingdean
Meanwhile, the sheep are merrily munching through the long grass, clearing the way for the scrub bashers. The hill is divided into 7 sections and they will be well into section 5 by the time this goes to print. They are due to be moving off to pastures new by midDecember. We’ve got an extra date of Thursday 22ⁿ November at 10AM when the Green Gym (another band of roving volunteers) will be joining us. Don’t be shy, feel free to come along and see what all the noise is about. We meet 2ⁿ Wednesday and 4 Friday of each month at 10AM at the Beacon Hub Cafe Kiosk. Tools are provided but please wear sturdy shoes/boots/gloves and if you have a pair of secatuers please bring them along.

Funeral Book of Margetts and Cooke
The Funeral Accounts of Margetts and Cooke from March 1908 to December 1946. Part One Some films now carry warnings such as "contains violence" or, my favourite, "mild peril." I should therefore say that this article may contain some sadness, especially where the death of children is concerned. This local firm started with Arthur Stanley Cooke, housepainter lodging with the Margetts family in 1901 at 10 Nevill Road. The Margetts family included dad Billy, retired aged 56, his wife Charlotte (who was shortly to be widowed) and his son John who described himself as a builder and decorator. By the 1911 census Mr Cooke describes himself as a housebuilder of 9 Nevill Road. 1927 Kelly’s directory describes Margetts and Cooke (Telephone Rottingdean 29) as “Builders & decorators, undertakers, house and land and estate agents” (See advert opposite)
It was normal for builders to organise funerals since a carpenter was required to make the coffin and strong men were needed to act as bearers to carry it. There was sometimes further labour in creating or opening family vaults. One example in 1915 was adding Stephen Welfare, Landlord of The White Horse, to his dear wife Martha. Other work could involve such hygiene tasks as clearing bedding or fumigating a room using a bottle of formalin and candles. The resultant formaldehyde vapour would have been very effective at disinfecting contagious diseases but also highly toxic and carcinogenic, making it an extremely hazardous task. On occasions the builders' skill would have been used to take out a bedroom window to remove a body Margetts & Cooke Workers

The gravestone of Hannah Spain some years earlier states that she lost five babies between 1860 and 1869, when she sadly died during the birth of the sixth.
Margos Mews
Margetts & Cooke advert
Other sad reading in the accounts includes several suicides and twenty-six bodies found washed up on the beach and subsequently buried at the expense of the Parish. The latter included many babies. Infant mortality was much worse a hundred years ago and only improved with advances in hygiene and medicine. Bungers Barn (now Margo's Mews) was built by the parish as an alternative to the workhouse. One occupant, Mrs Porte, had thirteen children and only one survived to adulthood. Of the twelve who died only three were buried in the churchyard.
Activity during World War I caused a different reason for bereavement and led to wider travel for the undertakers. In 1915 they travelled to Portsmouth to escort the coffin containing Herbert S Bishop. He died when a converted trawler, the minesweeper Erin, was sunk by a U-boat off the Isle of Wight and his body washed ashore at Rottingdean. Later that year they collected the body of Sgt. Major J H Rose of 27 Squadron Royal Flying Corps from Dover. The bill included railway and hotel expenses for the undertaker and two relatives from Brookside, Steyning Road. Concluded next month‌

The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Society Cert: 12A
First, take three potatoes, and peel. Set aside the peel for decoration. Boil the potatoes, mash, place in a dish, garnish with the set-aside potato peel. Bake in the oven and enjoy? A truly unpleasant dish: no egg, no flour, no milk. Do not try this at home. This cut-down recipe, of an otherwise bona-fide dish, is a version penned by a member of the eccentric Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society. Devised during the occupation of the Channel Islands during World War II, ingredients that would otherwise have made this dish palatable, were in short supply. In short supply, too, were liberty; freedom of movement; and meat products. The latter were reserved exclusively for the occupying German Officers - part of the strictures imposed on the islanders: though this is not what the film is about. When a stoic little group of islanders are walking home after curfew, they are challenged by German officers demanding an explanation. The explanation offered exemplifies the phrase ‘necessity is the mother of invention’. The officers are told that the group are returning from a literary society meeting, that also has an interest in cooking. One of the members, a little worse for wear after the night out, promptly vomits on a Nazi officer’s boot. Ahead of us are comedy and tragedy: dark family secrets are uncovered; intrigues and betrayals exposed; joys and disappointments abound; love blossoms and dies; and potato pie recipes are explained - all in a tightly-knit community that makes ‘The Archers’ seem positively cosmopolitan.
spirits. The ingredients come together brilliantly in a tale that name-checks ‘Cold Comfort Farm’ for atmosphere and Thomas Hardy for coincidence and happenstance; set against the beautiful backdrop of the Channel Islands (or the West Country as the Location Manager describes it). A glimpse of summer sun for the darker evenings. Now: did you guess the title of our Christmas opera from last month’s clues, or did you visit our website? Either way, if you got ‘La Gazzetta’ (‘The Newspaper’), a comic opera by Rossini, award yourself 5 points! PLEASE NOTE Tuesday December 11 for your diary. This is our special Charity Performance, by kind permission of the Royal Opera House, every penny going to The Children’s Society and Alzheimer’s Society. Come along: enjoy Prosecco during the interval; support these excellent causes; and enjoy superb performances (sung in Italian, with English subtitles), directed & staged by the great Dario Fo, Nobel prize-winner and author (“Can’t Pay? Won’t Pay!”, “Accidental Death of an Anarchist”). Tickets £5.50. Jon
Lily James (‘Cinderella’, ‘Baby Driver’ and ‘Mamma Mia – Here We Go Again’) plays author Juliet Ashton. Her character has parallels with Bathsheba from Thomas Hardy’s ‘Far From the Madding Crowd’; her choice of partner never looking quite like her true destiny. James plays the part with wide-eyed innocence: a free spirit with worldly experience, who takes an interest in the Guernsey Society and its members. London life and rural Channel Islands collide with interesting results. There are fine supporting performances from veteran actors: Tom Courtenay (’45 Years’, ‘Quartet’, ‘The Dresser’, ‘Doctor Zhivago’); Penelope Wilton (‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’, ‘Pride and Prejudice’, ‘Calendar Girls’), who almost steals the film; and Matthew Goode (‘The Imitation Game’, ‘Dancing on the Edge’) as Ashton’s publisher. From the makers of ‘The Best Marigold Hotel’ films, this is a crowd-pleaser. On TV, this would be good early Sunday evening entertainment. With easy charm, gentle wit and romantic intrigue, it’s sure to warm the hearts and lift the

The Lido Community Interest Company Can you help? The Saltdean Lido CIC has evolved from its beginnings as a highly successful campaigning group to ‘save the Lido’ from becoming a block of flats, to what is now a team overseeing the restored and operating pool, and an overall £10 million+ restoration and construction project to produce a new vibrant centre for our community. You can see the plans for the Saltdean Lido complex on our website. This is an exciting and high profile project made all the more interesting, and challenging, because of its listed Grade II* status and local heritage. The team has evolved and changed over time and the current team of committed local volunteer CIC directors are: Sally Horrox – (Chair) - Director of Marketing and business development at www.worldskillsuk.org Derek Leaver – Group Deputy Chairman at www.coinsglobal.com David Bailey - Partner and Head of Dispute Resolution & Professional Negligence at www.healys.com Deryck Chester – Long term Saltdean resident and our Heritage expert Matthew Glen - Freelance M&E Project Manager for Blue Chip Retail Companies. Lucy Freeborn - Project Manager at Whipper Snapper Kids Julie Shepherd – Retired company director experienced in managing SME’
And we also have a fantastic team of 30+ volunteer ‘helpers’ who have made it all possible so far. We are getting very close to the next phase where we will be managing an income and restoration spend of nearly £7 million and we need help with the general financial governance of the company. (Our existing finance professional has had to stand down for personal reasons but is available to assist in a smooth transition.) We specifically require a volunteer Financial Director and a Commercial Director and also assistance with general accounting, book keeping and administration, but are always happy to hear from anyone willing to spare some time. If you are local, retired, ‘kinda’-retired, semi-retired, fully employed, part-time employed, not-sure-what-to-do-withyourself-now-winter-is-coming or just plain passionate about your local community and want to help get this building over the line and open, this could be for you. If you are interested in giving a bit of your time and experience to join the team and get involved in the legacy of transforming the only Grade II* listed coastal lido in the country into a fantastic commercial venue and community centre in the heart of Saltdean - please get in touch with us. In the first instance please email info@saltdeanlido.co.uk with brief details of who you are and how you would like to help, and one of us will get back to you for a chat.

Local Resilience Team Advice
Simple Tips for Keeping Safe and Warm in Winter From the Resilience Team Be Prepared - Get your boiler serviced before the really bad weather kicks in. - Consider installing additional insulation. - Test your fire and carbon monoxide alarms. - Keep a torch handy and make sure you have spare batteries. - Keep some emergency non-perishable food supplies eg tinned soup, energy cereal bars. Keep your home warm - Your main living room should be at least 21 degrees centigrade (70 F) and your bedroom at least 18 degrees centigrade (64 F). If you feel cold turn up the heat. - It is better to keep your home at a constant stable temperature than live with fluctuations. Many modern central heating boilers are more economic to run 24 /7. - Keep your bedroom windows closed at night when it is cold. This is important because inhaling cold air can raise the risk of chest infections, heart attacks and strokes. - Never use a hot water bottle with an electric blanket. Think healthy - Stay active if you can, it is good for wellbeing and fitness, but don’t take unnecessary risks going outside in snow and ice. - Wrap up warmly, several thin layers of clothing will be warmer than one thick layer. Wear a hat, gloves and warm scarf pulled up over your face when it’s really cold. - Even if it’s not a severe winter cold weather makes us vulnerable to some illnesses. - If you are over 65 or in a vulnerable group you are entitled to a flu jab. Ask your GP or pharmacist for advice. - Hot food and regular hot drinks will help you stay warm. Take extra care when driving - Remember weather forecasts are not guaranteed to be 100% accurate. - Before setting off on a long journey check your tyres, water and petrol levels. - Allow extra time in bad weather.
- Charge your mobile phone before setting off. - Keep an emergency kit in the car: a torch, de-icer spray, snow shovel, an extra coat or blanket and thick socks and boots to put on should the need arise - On a long journey take a thermos of hot drink. Please be a good neighbour - If there is someone old, frail or vulnerable near you please give them a call. Lions November News This month we have a reminder of our annual sponsored swim. Also, we have news on a Lions supported appeal for head scanner equipment for the Kent Surrey Sussex Air balance service. We also look at some of the help pledges we have made in the community. Please remember that this month our popular Sponsored Swim at Roedean School Pool will be held on Sunday 18 November. The proceeds are split between the entered team’s own choice of charity or good cause and the Lions’ charities; the Lions’ principal beneficiary this year once again will be Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice. Do contact us if you would like to enter a team this year, we will try to accommodate you. Lions clubs in the Southeast region, including Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions, have supported the Air Ambulance Kent Surrey Sussex (AAKSS) over the past five years. The Air Ambulance caters for the whole population of our area. It can now fly for 24 hours per day, seven days per week, providing a life-saving service. Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions are proud of the part they have played, particularly in helping AAKSS achieve a night flying capability for which Lions in the Southeast raised £250,000 in 5 years. However, they now want to make another great step forward with the Lions supporting their new Head Scanner Appeal. The initial aim was to raise £36,000 to procure this cutting edge technology that can help many people who suffer from traumatic brain injury (TBI). Lions have now raised more than £36,000 to help develop the head scanner and we are now giving further vital assistance in the testing and development of the scanner. TBI is one of the leading causes of death and disability and a major complication of TBI is bleeding in the brain, which is a time critical condition. This technology will have a significant impact on patient care. Knowing if a patient has a bleed in their head can help in the development of new treatments and techniques to reduce the significant damage caused by TBI. If identified in the early stages of a person’s injury it can ensure they transport a patient to the most appropriate hospital, and speedily in the air ambulance. We regularly help local groups in our area. For example, the Southern Knight Stars a dance group run at Woodingdean Primary school for children and young adults with special needs. They are currently in need of equipment to continue this valuable service in the community. To provide assistance we will be making a donation of £300 towards a speaker and costumes they need. We also make pledges to help local organisations. For example, Rhythmix, we have agreed to offer a pledge of £500 to this organisation in respect of their 'Musicians in Healthcare' project being held at the Emerald Ward in the RSCH As always we look to find local individuals/charities and community/Lions projects to help. Please contact us if you know an individual or organisation in need. Finally, we are pleased to announce that we are one of the chosen charities for the next period at Asda in the Marina.
Please do support us, if you shop there, by putting your green discs in our slot. Many thanks. If you would like more information on any of our services, or fundraising activities, or you would like to enter a swimming team, or you would like to contribute to the Head Scanner Appeal please contact Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions on 08458 339617 or email us at info@rottingdeanandsaltdeanlions.org.uk. Pain Therapist Penny Koster Myofascial Release - the gentle release of connective tissue, I have a beautiful log cabin in my garden where I work from, it is an incredibly relaxing and gentle space. I have been a therapist for many years, I have a lot of different qualifications and training, but the therapy I am most passionate about and know first‐hand works completely is myofascial release, Myo‐fascial is the connective tissue which joins everything together, covers everything, fills all the gaps holds you together, it has the memory of your life, it relays messages to your brain faster than the nervous System, every single thing that happens to you in your life whether it be good or bad is stored in your subconscious and your fascial system, The fascia is like a giant web made up of collagen, elastin and ground substance it covers you from top to toe with no orifices unlike your skin, it moves constantly within your body, it penetrates, covers, protects every organ, muscle, ligament, tendon, bones everything- we are fascia, scar tissue is damaged fascia that has gone hard and dehydrated, that is why generally women get more lower back problems then men because they have hysterectomies, C-sections and end up with fascia that is damaged, dehydrated and hard (scar tissue) so no longer moves and consequently pulls on areas like the lower back, fascia can become hardened dehydrated and stop moving and therefore cause problems, discomfort, pain, disease for many many different reasons I generally call it life. Another example because we are one complete unit everything is connected you could have a pain in your shoulder and the
pain could possibly originate in your lower back, or maybe your neck or both. Myofascial release is being called the missing link and I passionately believe this to be true, I believe in the not too distant future everyone will be having these treatments, The cause of discomfort, pain is the collagen layer of the fascia, this is the layer that has to be released from its stuck, dehydrated, no longer moving position! An Analogy if you step on a hosepipe the flow is impaired. I am highly trained in myofascial release, I am trained to Body read to know where the problem is and then to un-stick it.. The whole world needs to know about this treatment! I feel very passionately that everyone should understand how it works, and as much as possible be able to do it to themselves and each other. There is no such thing as 'I have that pain because I'm getting old' No-one needs to have pain! Exceptions being if you break a leg or have an accident et cetera, I give these treatments which are extremely powerful but at the Same time very gentle, I also educate people so that they can self-care in the future and when they have a pain they understand why it's happening, and what they can do about it, ABSOLUTELY NO ONE HAS TO BE IN PAIN. Everyone is different sometimes it takes longer than others, IT IS WORTH THE WAIT! If you're interested in having a treatment and want to learn more about myofascial release and myself please go to: www.trigger-points.me.uk or phone me on 07951 117826

Emma Southerby I’m Emma, pleased to ‘meet’ you, I grew up in Brighton and have such a passion for the city, I moved to Saltdean in January of this year and am absolutely head over heels in love with the entire Deans in all its stunning glory. You can often find me walking my dogs on the Downs or taking photos on the beach. A few years ago I was handed a photo by my parents which had belonged to my grandparents it was in such a sorry state; I had been working on images and damaged photographs for a good few years at this point but I’d never seen anything in such an awful shape as this, I had to do something about it. After a fair few hours (don’t make me think about just how many!) I was finally happy enough with the restoration; although I must admit I could fiddle with all images for a lifetime tweaking small bits here and there. I can’t tell you the pride you get when you see the finished image back to its former glory, it’s a wonderful feeling! Restoration is without a doubt the most satisfying side of image editing; I could do it day in day out. I also provide artwork, image and photo editing to designers, photographers and small businesses across the UK.
Another passion of mine is pet photography. I have always been obsessed with and felt I've had an affinity to the canine variety, as a small child I would request my Father ask each and every dog owner we passed if I could please stroke their dog, if my parents ever lost me in the park they just looked for the nearest dog, let’s just say I was smitten with every breed and character from the very beginning and as such I specialise in dog photography, although any creature great or small, fat or thin, hairy or scaly is more than welcome at a shoot, I love all animals and creatures. I truly adore learning about your beautiful companion and capturing their character and your relationship in images you can treasure forever more. I have taken numerous courses and have multiple diplomas in canine behaviour & care. I have had dogs myself since I was 9 - it took me that long to wear my parents down! - I feel I am able to read and understand them in great detail (the dogs that is not my parents - they are still a mystery!) Please feel free get in touch, even if it’s just to chat about animals! I’d love to hear from you elsphotographer@gmail.com elsphoto.co.uk
