Welcome
Welcome to the October Edition
Page 7 Dolphin Computer Tips Page 17 Clifden House Page 25 Health Tips Page 29 Local Person - David Attree
October is my least favourite month, I’ve probably mentioned that once or twice over the years, luckily there are still lots of things to do, and our dogs guarantee that I still get out into the fresh air at least twice a day. It seems to be a very good month for events too as we have quite a list of things going on, including a model railway show in Seaford and stand up comedy in Peacehaven, please see the Entertainment and Events section in our index for more information.
Page 37 Friends of Beacon Hill
In our September edition we mentioned an upcoming article about a local actor and film maker, to find out more please see page 51.

We have found that our Facebook page is a good way of displaying events and articles which arrive too late for publication or we don’t have space for, so if you have missed our monthly deadline please send your copy in anyway as chances are we can put it on Facebook. Save Your Photos. When you last went to look for a photo, which of the following did you do? Went to the bookshelves and dug out a dusty old photo album? Or: Reached for your phone and scrolled through the 100s of images you have stored there? If you are over a certain age you will recall having to limit how many pictures you took on your camera for fear that your roll of film would run out. You had no idea whether those photos would come out clearly or not, and you had to wait a good couple of weeks before you got them back from the developer. All long gone – now we can click away as many times as we want, see immediately if the picture is any good, and even edit it there and then to enhance the shot.
phones or our tablets? How often do you back them up? Or check to make sure that they are backed up? One of our most heart-breaking tasks is telling someone that they have lost everything – all of their data including those priceless photos. And yet this is simply prevented by ensuring that you have a fully automated and encrypted backup solution on all of your devices. This will not only keep your images safe, but also everything else that you have stored on your computer or on your mobile phone or tablet. If you would like to keep your photos saved and your data secure, please ask us for the right solution for your personal requirements and individual devices – and if you think you do have a backup, remember to check that it’s doing its job and is backing everything up for you.
But how many of us just take it for granted that those images will remain accessible to us on our

Maximise Your Time Together Visiting a friend or relative in a care home provides you with some precious, uninterrupted quality time together. Nial Joyce of Clifden House Dementia Care Centre, Seaford gives his advice on how to make the most of every visit. 1. Plan your visit: It is often a good idea to speak to the care team and ask them to recommend the best time of day to visit. If you can, call ahead so you can be prepared for whatever mood your friend or relative is in that day. Be prepared to be flexible and set aside as much time as possible. 2. Bring memories with you: If it has been a while since your last visit you may find it useful to bring something with you to spark conversation or help unlock memories. A picture album is a fantastic way of remembering happy times.
regularly but who now struggles to keep in touch? Offer to bring them with you. Or get them to record a video message on your phone so that you can share this with the resident – and then record their reply! 7. Keep trying: Although conversations may not always be possible, you will both gain great comfort by simply being together. Try to enjoy the time you have together while you can and cherish the memories you have. Clifden House delivers highly qualified and personal dementia care to suit the needs of each resident. Our aim is to facilitate each person to continue to live a fulfilling and active life, with privacy, dignity and security, for as long as possible. www.clifdenhouse.co.uk Tel: 01323 896460
3. Plan an activity: Even if mobility is an issue, there are still plenty of things you can do together. For a change of scene, you may want to spend time in the garden or on the seafront. Alternatively, bring a game, jigsaw puzzle or DVD of a favourite film you have enjoyed together in the past. 4. Join in with our activities: At Clifden House we run a range of individual and group activities to stimulate our residents’ engagement with the world around them. Visitors are encouraged to join in and enjoy these activities together. 5. Stay for a meal: We encourage visitors to stay for lunch – our beach themed café serves nutritious, home cooked meals and we are happy to accommodate specific dietary needs. 6. Bring someone with you: Is there a friend or neighbour that the resident used to see

Bridgeford’s Best Bites
Dog Walking Issues Problems from walking your pooch As a nation, we are animal lovers; we love our fur family and want to take good care of them. What about the impact on our bodies of an activity such as walking or beloved dogs? Some of the issues are year round, others are seasonal such as the terrain, the weather, the livestock and their young where we are walking. Many of my patients have injuries and aches and pains from issues around dog walking. Common physical issues Many of the physical issues from dog walking relate to slips, trips and falls; other common issues are from a dog pulling on the lead, lifting heavy dogs in and out of the car when they are no longer able to jump and also carrying an injured dog; even if the dog is small we are probably dealing with emotions that make the task trickier. Issues such as tennis or golfer's elbow, rotator cuff and shoulder joint pain as well as forearm, wrist and hand pain can result from a dog pulling on the lead either suddenly or repeatedly, this can also pull up into the neck and back. Strained back or neck, sprained ankle and twisted knee can result from slips, trips and falls as well as awkward lifting and bending, e.g. to pick up a ball repeatedly. Weather, seasons and terrain Each season has it's issues with dog walking. Icy or wet ground makes it more likely that you can slip, trip or fall. When the weather is cold you may be more likely to get muscle aches and pains and we are certainly all stiffer in the morning than in the evening anyway. When the weather is hot, we need to keep ourselves and our dogs well hydrated and may need to go out earlier to avoid the intense heat. Dry ground may have more loose stones that we can trip on. We need to be aware when there is low lying strong sunlight that it can blind drivers, making it more difficult to spot walkers at certain angles. It is also important to know your own and your dog's limitations of distance and energy for a walk. Footwear and attire Blisters can be a problem if your shoes do not fit well. It is also important to have appropriate shoes for the weather and terrain and often something with good support to help keep you steadier. Whilst wellies help keep you dry they do not always offer good support. If you have issues with over pronation or falling arches, a good foot support can help the alignment of many joints in the body by starting with good foot alignment. Of course weather appropriate clothes are important, rainwear in the wet as well as hats, sunglasses and sun cream in the heat.
on the lead, lifting large dogs, incorrect lifting, lack of core strength. Tips Back, Neck and Shoulders: It is important to learn correct lifting technique to keep the back strong and also how to use your upper back muscles around the shoulder blade to have better strength and control in your arm and prevent the tension going to the low back, the neck or the arm from a lead pull. Good core strength is crucial for a healthy low back and in fact for the whole body biomechanics. Learn to stretch well. Elbows, Forearms, Wrists and Hands: There are some good stretching exercises for forearms, wrists and hands to release tension and also build strength. Avoid gripping the lead too tight, try one that wraps around the wrist for extra control. Hips, Knees, Ankles and Feet: Strength and flexibility are important for keeping active. Learn to stretch hip flexors, hamstrings, butt muscles, calves, feet and ankles. Wear appropriate footwear and orthotics if needed. Keep the thighs strong and avoid twisting the knee suddenly or repeatedly. Keeping fit for dog walking We need to be fit to walk our dogs like any other physical activity. Even though dog walking is itself an exercise, we need to keep ourselves strong, fit and supple to keep it going all year round. Strengthening and stretching exercises are important. The whole body can be affected by slips, trips and falls, a dog pulling on the lead, lack of upper back strength with a big dog

How a Saltdean resident is carving his own path with a pen
Local man, David Attree, stepped away from full-time work at the end of 2016, to pursue a dream of writing for a living and inviting people to smile, think and join in. He has always written rhymes and played with words, but is now proving himself by working as a “Poet Chef” for The Poetry Takeaway, a popup poetry company that offers bespoke poems for the public, after a brief chat to get some ‘ingredients’. The timescale available to produce something that amuses or touches a heart is limited, so it is always a great test of verbal dexterity and imagination. He created and painted a poem design for one of the wonderful Snailspace snails last year, for The Martlets fundraising campaign. He is pictured here with the very talented local artist, Judith Berrill, and their creation, “Mr Watts”, who was ultimately bought by a local couple and now ‘lives’ in Ovingdean. During his time away from the big buildings, offices and meetings, he has completed a proofreading and copy-editing course, so is now helping other writers to refine their work and ensure that all is looking good for their next stages too. With regular open-mic appearances in Brighton for his spoken-word work, a run of 6 shows in this year’s Brighton Fringe and a recent poetry tour that was picked up by BBC Sussex, he’s
certainly not letting the momentum lessen, but he tells us that he’s happy to discuss commissioned work, poetry or proofreading jobs with any local people that can use his talents. Currently, he is working on book two of a series of chapter books for younger readers, that feature very small creatures, who may just live around us all in our gardens. He says: “The first book sees three little personalities with names that begin with “A”, “B” and “C” but at the end of the book, they meet “D”, so there’s certainly scope for a decent amount of adventures to come!”

Friends of Beacon Hill
Beacon Hill Nature Reserve The volunteers of Friends of Beacon Hill came back to work, raring to go, after taking a well earned break during August. The weather was one of those glorious September days with bright skies and a lovely 20C temperature. We returned to our usual stomping ground of the “experimental area”, atop the hill to the north of the copse, and were pleasantly surprised to find the brambles were really underdeveloped and weakened by our previous pulling. All very promising for the future. We are well aware that the areas adjacent to the woods further north along the reserve have been neglected during our near 3-year efforts to rid the experimental area of bramble and will be getting on it. The sycamores seem to have taken root and grown quite tall so our main efforts for the balance of the year will be this area.
having new members so come along and join in the conservation conversation. FOBeaconHill@gmail.com 01273 983000 www.facebook.com/beaconhillrottingdean
The longest root competition has started with a stonker (see photo) but we expect many more entries over the coming months. An interesting root find was the double header (also pictured). One root but with shoots coming out of each end. The beastly blackthorn burrows under the pathways from the woods and onto the reserve quite regularly but rest assured, we’re on it! The more hands on deck, the quicker we can clear the brambles and woody invaders so please feel free to come along and join in the fun. We meet for a 2 hour session on the 2ⁿ Tuesday and 4 Friday of each month, 10AM at the picnic benches to the south end of the Nature Reserve. Please join us in sturdy footwear, gardening gloves and, if you have them, bring secateurs. We always look forward to

Rottingdean: High Street Shops

First is Harry Hilder’s bakery next to the Black Horse, which as you will notice was reached up steps. In the picture are his wife Alice and his son Edgar. Note the sweet jars in the window. The passage between the shop and the pub is still there and led to the bakehouse at the rear. Mary Sautter (whose father Jim Taylor was the first Rottingdean man to become Mayor of Brighton) recalls taking the family joint to be cooked in Hilder’s oven on a Sunday for a small fee! Bob Copper likewise recalls taking the Christmas dinner of beef and turkey to be roasted in Hilder’s oven at 7.30 am on Christmas morning. I have also included a picture of Whipping Post House when it included Hilder’s Butchers shop, run by Harry’s brother William. More about Whipping Post House next month.

41 Mockford’s greengrocers has changed hands many times often being tearooms but the 16 Century building has changed little over the years.
The Lucy Ann sweet shop was established two doors up from St Aubyns School (an early example of good marketing!) and is externally almost unchanged.
Jimmy Cruse was an assistant at Richardson’s Stores which was for many years on the old NatWest site. Cruse’s stores were established by his son Ron, opposite, until it closed in 1979. As Christopher Stringer’s Funeral Directors the building is virtually unchanged.

Neighbourhood Watch
43
NHW and Social Media Saltdean Rottingdean & Ovingdean Neighbourhood Watch have had a Facebook & Twitter Account for quite some time now, and it continues to go from strength to strength. Our Facebook Account has over 170 followers & friends, with Twitter we have 70 followers. This all helps when we want to inform our Residents and Members of any incidents in our area, and in this day and age when our local Police are thin on the ground it can be very helpful in keeping our villages safe. Recently, we have had reports of the usual Blue Transit van taking things from our properties & people walking onto property and trying back gates etc. This information can be circulated quickly. When poison pellets were left by the Oval, we were able to act fast and let as many people as possible know. Every day I search for information that we can use in our local area, and that often includes Saltdean Zone & Residents Association and other local Schemes, but it would be really helpful if when posting things on these sites that you let us know as well.
If it is urgent, we can act on it straight away & get the post out there to warn or inform the local Community. Neighbourhood Watch is all about helping & Strengthening our Community to keep it a lovely safe place, but we need your help. Please become a Facebook friend for regular updates or follow us on Twitter. We are hoping to have a Whats App account soon to reach even more people. FACEBOOK: Saltdean Nhw TWITTER @NhwSro If you would like to become a Neighbourhood Watch Member please contact me through Facebook. For just £1 one off donation, you will receive a welcome pack containing window stickers, safety & security advice and receive our Newsletter three times a year. Local Actor

John Locke
Saltdean-based character actor John Locke is currently filming on the feature film “Vindication Swim”, location Brighton. The film tells the story of working-class typist Mercedes Gleitze, played in the film by Kirsten Callaghan, who in 1927 became the first British woman to swim the English Channel. John, who appeared in Oscar winning films “Darkest Hour” and “The Favourite”, co-stars with Kirsten, playing the part of Harold Best, the troubled coach to the epic swimmer. John says of the project “The script is truly exhilarating and manages to capture both the drama of the swim and the tangled events around it, the patriarchal barriers that Mercedes faced, and the complex relationship with her coach, Harold Best, as they attempt to confront and overcome an establishment intent on thwarting her ambitions. For any character actor the part is once in a lifetime opportunity”. John also praises director Elliott Hasler, of Relsah Productions, who has been described as “The next Spielberg” (Culture Trip) and, still only nineteen, has a number of features and short films behind him and who has attracted the attention of Emmy Award winner Daniel Clive McCallum who composed the music for another Hasler film, “To Hunt a Tiger”, in which John also appears “I have had the privilege to work for a number of the most senior, lauded, original and exciting directors of the day including Joe Wright (“Darkest Hour”), Yorgos Lanthimos (“The Favourite”) The Wachowskis (“Jupiter Ascending”), and Ben Taylor (Channel 4’s “Year of the Rabbit” as controversial character Neil Fromage). Elliott is undoubtedly headed for a major career in the film industry, should he wish it. His maturity as a director, his ability to write convincing scenes and grasp of the complexities of making a successful film are remarkable. Brighton & Hove has a long history of producing original and successful film talent. Elliott, I am sure is going to add his name to the roll of honour”.
Filming at sea.
John also spoke of the place of “Vindication Swim” in Brighton’s history as a film location. “Brighton’s place as a location of classic and memorable films, “Brighton Rock” (1947), “Oh! What a Lovely War” (1969), “Loot” (1970), “Quadrophenia” (1979), “The End of The Affair” (1999), are just a few examples of the kind of films for which Brighton is famous. “Vindication Swim” is going to be filming through to next year and I can see the people of Brighton taking it to their hearts in the same way as “Quadrophenia”, say. A Brighton director, in Elliott Hasler, telling the story of one of Brighton’s own, in Mercedes Gleitze, and a story of originality, courage and defying convention. Telling it and filming it in Brighton and how great is that?” You can keep up with progress on the film through the website https://www.relsahproductions.co.uk/ and through Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/relsahproductions/

Sue Jones - Textile Artist
55
Grange Gallery Exhibit Textiles as Reminiscence – The Journey within and without is on show at the Grange Gallery, Rottingdean October 15 – November 10 2019. Dr Sue Jones has created a series of knitted hand-made objects as an impromptu reflection of a range of experiences, textiles and cultural references. But this is also a creative process – trying to reconfigure all those memories into a reminiscence and a creative activity for her retirement. It is a personal journey about her life with knitting, taught as a child in the 50s by her mother, rejecting that domestic context in the 60s for a professional life of consultancies and travelling around the world in the 80s and 90s and returning in 2012 to a too quiet life in the UK. Her belief and recent consultancy work is concerned with helping people – men and women - finding more creative work/ life balance. Men like Kaffe Fassett – a personal hero – show how creative knitting can be. This exhibition is her personal way of showing that, as her comment for Dean’s magazine shows: “I was thinking about how to summarise all the elements of this journey I wanted to use art and hand craft in a special – a personal way. It was a surprise to realise it – a sort of” where do we come from, where are we and where are we going” moment, saying: To my mother - Look what I did with what you gave me.
For all of us, men and women = Look what we can do when we are older; we can find whatever way to be more creative and reflect on life. It doesn’t all end here – it can just be the start.” She will be at the exhibition on Friday and Saturday mornings knitting and inviting visitors to help her with colour combinations for a knitted squares object that will develop during the exhibition. She will also give a talk about her work, hoping to involve local textile enthusiasts and specialists in that discussion.

All is True
(Cert 12a)
Tuesday 22nd October ‘Not more Shakespeare!’ The cry went up and down the rows of pupils at school, the same cry repeated by students at college and still by some of us, as another production of Shakespeare’s plays gets airtime. Our early relationship with the works of Shakespeare will either endear him to us or make us vow never to see another play by him. That rant aside, most people will at some level know about the angst-driven Hamlet, the evil in Macbeth and the violence in Coriolanus. Much as the Beatles lyrics have become part of our DNA, many lines from Shakespeare have become part of our daily vocabulary: “wild goose chase”, pure as the driven snow”, “seen better days”. There’s a website, if you’re interested: http://mentalfloss.com/article/60264/21-phrases-youuse-without-realizing-youre-quoting-shakespeare Outside of knowing that he had a connection with Stratford Upon Avon, and that his wife was called Anne, most of my knowledge of Shakespeare, was gained through the TV comedy series ‘Upstart Crow’, and here the genus of ‘All is True’ begins, since both were written by Ben Elton. Incidentally, the name ‘Upstart Crow’ was given to Shakespeare by Robert Greene, a contemporary of Shakespeare. The meaning of the phrase is “someone who has risen economically or socially but lacks the social skills appropriate for this new position” – clearly not a fan. If titbits of information like this appeal to you, then our October film will fascinate. ‘All is True’ is about Shakespeare, the man, and the last three years of his life – not his works. It is a wellresearched and beautifully filmed account of Shakespeare’s life, that was eclipsed by the body of his work. It is also a melancholic story, capturing the darkness of loss. Shakespeare comes back to Stratford, devastated after the fire that destroyed The Globe theatre. There were no more plays to come. ‘All is True’ is about Shakespeare facing the turmoil created by a troubled past, and the consequences of having neglected his family, pursuing his career in London. Coming to terms with the death of his only son, Hamnet, Shakespeare struggles to mend broken relationships with his wife and daughters. William (Kenneth Branagh) attempts reconnecting and reconciliation with the family, and unravels family secrets that, in turn, contain clues to the last of Shakespeare’s plays.
This is both a witty and authoritative film that captures the period perfectly. Shooting it in Shakespeare’s house, on location at Dorney Court, Buckinghamshire, is masterly; with rooms lit only by candlelight; without concession to brightening the image for filmic effect. The film strikes a good balance between scholarly research and entertainment, revealing much about Shakespeare that is masked by the plays. Kenneth Branagh gives a performance he was born to play; and is ably supported by the big guns of film and theatre. Judi Dench plays Anne and, in THE scene of the film, there is a totally captivating cameo performance by Ian McKellen as the Earl of Southampton. Final bit of trivia: "All Is True", was taken from the Shakespeare play "Henry VIII", for which it was an early title. Next month: fantasy, lots of familiar tunes, and a chance to test your memory of Beatles lyrics as we screen ‘Yesterday’ – much recommended. Jon

Lions October Review This month we look back at our busy summer season of fundraising, and we also make a request for seniors that may be interested in joining us for our future Christmas lunches. Recently, we were pleased to make a donation to the Four Deans Stroke Club towards their new minibus providing much needed mobility locally.
fundraising events please contact Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions on 0345 833 9617 or email at info@rottingdeanandsaltdeanlions.org.uk. If you would like to make a donation to us please click on the ‘Donate’ button on the home page of our website: (www.rottingdeanandsaltdeanlions.org.uk). Lion Roger Bluff
Also, we are pleased to see the Longhill School piano installed in memory of our Late Lion Gerry Prince. He would be very happy to see music being shared with young people. He of course was a great jazz musician, and he is sadly missed by his family, friends and Lions. Please remember that on 20 October we have our popular Sponsored Swim at Roedean School Pool. The swim is held annually to raise money for local charities. Groups, through entered teams of any size, raise funds by obtaining sponsorship with the proceeds being split between their own choice of charity or good cause and Lions’ charities; once again this year the Lions’ principal beneficiary will be Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice. Teams swim for one hour with the aim of swimming as many sponsored lengths as possible. Please make contact soon if you would like to enter a team as we already have quite a few teams entered. The deadline for entries is Friday 11 October, but we ask if you could notify us as soon as you can if it is your intention to enter. The timings for the swims are throughout the morning from 10 am. Full details will be sent on application. After another busy summer season for us, we are taking stock of our wide ranging fundraising activities. From our Fayre at Rottingdean Village Green, the annual Lions Gala at Saltdean Oval, our bar and barbeque at the Rottingdean Village Fair and of course the bar we provide for the Armed Forces Day at Blind Veterans UK. These days mainly involve early starts and late finishes for the Lions involved. Putting up marquees and taking them down again at the end of the day needs helping hands, not forgetting setting up our barbecue, bar and the numerous games we lay on. And like everyone else, us Lions aren’t getting any younger. These activities, however, are very important to us as they raise a large proportion of the valuable funds for our service activities for local charities and community/Lions projects. We were, therefore, very pleased to receive help from family and friends of the Lions. On behalf of the Lions, I would like to thank everyone for their assistance. We will be holding our Christmas lunches for senior citizens in the run up to the festivities, if you would like to attend or know anyone that may be interested, please contact us, bearing in mind it’s for local people over 65, retired and not in full time employment. We will also be pleased to put you on our contact list. If you would like more information on any of our service or fundraising activities, booking a team at our Sponsored Swim or would like to lodge an interest in helping us at our

Pain Therapist Penny Koster Myofascial Release - the gentle release of connective tissue, I have a beautiful log cabin in my garden where I work from, it is an incredibly relaxing and gentle space. I have been a therapist for many years, I have a lot of different qualifications and training, but the therapy I am most passionate about and know first‐hand works completely is myofascial release, Myo‐fascial is the connective tissue which joins everything together, covers everything, fills all the gaps holds you together, it has the memory of your life, it relays messages to your brain faster than the nervous System, every single thing that happens to you in your life whether it be good or bad is stored in your subconscious and your fascial system, The fascia is like a giant web made up of collagen, elastin and ground substance it covers you from top to toe with no orifices unlike your skin, it moves constantly within your body, it penetrates, covers, protects every organ, muscle, ligament, tendon, bones everything- we are fascia, scar tissue is damaged fascia that has gone hard and dehydrated, that is why generally women get more lower back problems then men because they have hysterectomies, C-sections and end up with fascia that is damaged, dehydrated and hard (scar tissue) so no longer moves and consequently pulls on areas like the lower back, fascia can become hardened dehydrated and stop moving and therefore cause problems, discomfort, pain, disease for many many different reasons I generally call it life. Another example because we are one complete unit everything is connected you could have a pain in your shoulder and the pain could possibly originate in your lower back, or maybe your neck or both. Myofascial release is being called the missing link and I passionately believe this to be true, I believe in the not too distant future everyone will be having these treatments, The cause of
discomfort, pain is the collagen layer of the fascia, this is the layer that has to be released from its stuck, dehydrated, no longer moving position! An Analogy if you step on a hosepipe the flow is impaired. I am highly trained in myofascial release, I am trained to Body read to know where the problem is and then to un-stick it.. The whole world needs to know about this treatment! I feel very passionately that everyone should understand how it works, and as much as possible be able to do it to themselves and each other. There is no such thing as 'I have that pain because I'm getting old' No-one needs to have pain! Exceptions being if you break a leg or have an accident et cetera, I give these treatments which are extremely powerful but at the Same time very gentle, I also educate people so that they can self-care in the future and when they have a pain they understand why it's happening, and what they can do about it, ABSOLUTELY NO ONE HAS TO BE IN PAIN. Everyone is different sometimes it takes longer than others, IT IS WORTH THE WAIT! If you're interested in having a treatment and want to learn more about myofascial release and myself please go to: www.trigger-points.me.uk or phone me on 07951 117826
