Welcome

Welcome to the December Edition We have some nice articles again for you this month; there is the Lido fundraising campaign on page 59; another that particularly stands out is Community Resilience on page 69. If anyone remembers the heavy snow we had a few years ago where people in Brighton were passing hot tea to motorists stuck in the traffic jam, and Rottingdean residents were out gritting the hills and giving cars a helping push when needed then this gives you a flavour of what Community Resilience is all about - helping to ensure that no one gets forgotten when normal systems stop working. Once again we are taking part in the St Margaret’s Christmas Tree Festival this year, and wish them every success with the event and their fund raising, we will bring you an update on the outcome as soon as we have some news.

Computer tips from Dolphin Computer Upgrades Computer Tips & Advice 75
Computer safety 10 ways to stay safe this Christmas when using any form of computer: Anti-Virus - Use It: We would recommend spending a little on this rather than using a free version; as with everything in life, you get what you pay for. Make Backups: Your computer will die one day. It’s not unusual for computers to die suddenly so ensure that you can still gain access to your data. Install Updates ASAP: As soon as a company becomes aware of a vulnerability it should issue an update – keeping all you have up to date will help to keep you safe. Think Before You Click: Never click a link in an email messages unless you are 100% sure. Just because something is listed online doesn’t mean it is safe. Think twice about where you’re going before you click. Secret Holiday: Updating your Facebook page with you at Gatwick airport leaves your home vulnerable
to being burgled. People deliberately scan social media sites to find out which homes are empty. Unprotected WiFi: If you are going away over Christmas, take care when you go online. Not all WiFi is secure, particularly in public places. Password Protection: Not only do you need this on your computer, you need to set it on your phone and your tablet too. Physical Protection: Tablets and phones aren’t cheap – don’t then scrimp on their cases as a smashed screen is not cheap to replace. Log Off: Every single time – be it Facebook, Twitter, or your entire computer – log out and log off. Call For Help: If you suspect that you have fallen foul to hackers or scammers, don’t ignore it. The sooner it is dealt with the less negative the impact. All of the team here at Dolphin Computers wish you a happy and safe Christmas.

Osteopathy tips
Bridgeford’s Best Bites:
Piriformis Syndrome The term was introduced by Robinson in 1947, implies a group of signs and symptoms caused by piriformis muscle disorders, leading to irritation and compression of the anatomic structures passing under its belly, notably the sciatic nerve, causing sciatica that is not related to the spine or discs. There is no consensus regarding diagnosis, pathophysiology, investigation and management. Anatomy: There are 2 piriformis muscles located across the bottom, attaching at one end to the ball at the top of the hip bone (the greater trochanter of the femur) and at the other end to either side of the sacrum (the triangular bone at the base of the spine) where the utero-sacral ligament also attaches. Piriformis muscles pass over the sacro-iliac joints, having a strong relationship with sciatic nerve, which passes under or through piriformis muscle slightly differently in each individual, making some people more susceptible to related sciatic nerve irritation. Symptoms: Are mostly related to spasm of the muscle and irritation of the underlying sciatic nerve. Buttock tenderness in the muscle itself and deep seated gluteal pain, which can radiate to coccyx and back of the leg. Aggravated by prolonged sitting, hip flexion, abduction (taking the leg out to the side) and internal rotation. There may be different leg lengths, weak hip abductors and pain on resisted hip abduction in sitting position. Causes: Usually by a fall on the buttocks or direct trauma. Can also be from irritation of the sacro-iliac joint or a lump near the sciatic notch, lipoma (fat containing lump) in the muscle, chronic expanding hematoma across the gluteal muscles, fibrosis after a deep injection, one leg shorter than the other, pyomyositis (bacterial infection in skeletal muscle that can cause a pus-filled abscess), dystonia (neurological movement disorder causing contractions and spasms), possibly adverse effects of atorvastatin. The layer of fascia surrounding the abdominal cavity can provide a route for infection from pelvis to piriformis, involving it in urino-genital irritation. Piriformis syndrome after caesarean section spinal anaesthetic is attributed to the spinal procedure, though can be caused by prolonged upright sitting after delivery, compressing sciatic nerve at sacro-iliac joint, inflaming and irritating piriformis. Ballet dancers often need help with piriformis due to leg turn-out position.
should be a last resort and can include arthroscopic release of the muscle. Osteopathic/Manual Management: Adjusting spinal and hip bones, soft tissue and myofascial techniques, stretching, dry needling, home rehabilitation exercises; attention to postural habits and ergonomics. We are happy to advise you on your health matters and offer a free 15 minute joint and spinal check, without obligation. Diagnosis: Neurological examination and imaging results are usually normal and used to rule out other causes of sciatica; each leg can be lifted up when laying on the back; symptoms are not be relieved by lumbar facet joint injections as lumbar nerve origin sciatica would be. Flexion, adduction and internal rotation movements of the hip cause pain. Pain can be reproduce by deep palpation in piriformis; contracting piriformis with Pace's manoeuvre: seated patient abducts the legs; stretching piriformis with Freiberg's manoeuvre: forceful internal rotation of the extended thigh and Side-laying: patient laying painful side up, upper leg bent, then lifting and holding upper knee several inches off the table. Treatment: Focuses on stretching (hip flexion, adduction, and external rotation), hip muscle strengthening, physical therapies, deep soft tissue work, acupuncture dry-needling, pain medication and ultrasound guided nerve blocks and injections, including corticosteroid and botulinum toxin; surgical management

Local History - Part 43

Rottingdean Smugglers Night
5 December 2015 is the traditional Smugglers’ Night in Rottingdean when local Bonfire Societies vividly commemorate The French Raiders who burnt the village in 1377 and the smuggling activities of past centuries. Wool had been smuggled out of England to avoid duties since the 13 Century but from the mid-17th century French goods such as lace, tea, coffee, gin, spices and brandy were brought ashore at Rottingdean, Saltdean and other gaps in the local cliffs. They would be hidden in gorse bushes, or caves in the cliffs, before being carried through tunnels which connected the cellars of the major village houses, for eventual transport to London. It was a wellplanned operation; even the sails of the windmill could be set in certain positions to signal that the coast was clear! The same was done at Highdown Mill, near Worthing. Kipling’s famous poem ‘A Smugglers’ Song’ ends: “Five and twenty ponies, Trotting through the dark Brandy for the Parson, 'Baccy for the Clerk. Them that asks no questions isn't told a lie Watch the wall my darling while the Gentlemen go by!” Almost all the village was involved including the local vicar, Dr. Thomas Hooker, who as a fine horseman acted as a lookout for the smugglers, and Captain Dunk the Butcher who lived at Whipping Post House which had many cellars and tunnels. This was not because they were major criminals but because poverty forced the villagers to turn to smuggling in a time of low wages and excessively high taxes on goods.
This situation worsened following the American War of Independence and a night’s work unloading duty free goods from France could pay almost as well as a week’s work for a farmhand or fisherman. Smuggling was dangerous. There were deaths on both sides caused by shootings or riding off the cliffs in the dark. The penalties for smuggling were severe and those caught faced death or transportation. Nevertheless, the activity in Rottingdean was not as unpleasant as that in East Sussex, where the violent Hawkhurst gang maintained a reign of terror in the 1740’s.
A Customs House was built around 1780 at 66 High Street ( now Tallboys) but the decline in smuggling only came when the Napoleonic wars ended. This resulted in a surplus of sailors who could be employed as Revenue men. They had permanent bases at Coastguard cottages such as those which you can still see today opposite the ‘Smuggler’s Rest’ at Portobello. Thus persistent smuggling activities were gradually curtailed. Photographs courtesy of Roz Bassford-South

Stephanie Anne Hike Civil Funeral Celebrant (Accredited) What kind of funeral do you want? When someone dies, family and close friends often face dozens of decisions about the funeral. Should it be a burial or cremation? What are the legal requirements? Who should conduct the ceremony? Where should it be held? All these questions are obviously important, but, at a time when emotional stress is high, it is easy to forget the most important question of all...what kind of funeral do you REALLY want? Every family is different, and not everyone wants the same type of funeral. Your choice may be influenced by religious and cultural traditions, or by cost and personal preferences or by the express wishes of the person who has died. Whilst many people in the UK still choose a 'traditional' religious funeral service, an increasing number are finding that a CIVIL FUNERAL CEREMONY is a more appropriate choice for them to make. What is a Civil Funeral Ceremony? This is, above all, a ceremony that reflects the wishes of the family and is focused on celebrating and/or reflection on the life of the deceased. It is both a dignified tribute and a highly personal memoir, created by a professional celebrant in consultation with the family or executor. A CIVIL CEREMONY can be held almost anywhere you wish. The event is appropriate for either a CREMATION or BURIAL at any non religious burial ground or a burial at a woodland burial site The Brighton Crematoriums and the Woodingdean burial site cater for all needs.
I am a fully trained professional FUNERAL CELEBRANT and I am able to create a comprehensive ceremony that meets your wishes and requirements. There may be members of your family or friends, who would like to speak at the ceremony. I will be able to talk to those who are participating and make sure that the ceremony is well organised. This is done in liaison with your chosen FUNERAL DIRECTOR and the staff at the Crematorium or place of burial . MUSIC can play a very important part in a CIVIL FUNERAL CEREMONY and you can include any pieces of music you feel are particularly appropriate for the ceremony. Families often choose to include additional pieces of poetry or readings that had a special significance for the deceased....I can help you choose them. You can also include a hymn or a prayer if you wish. I feel it is important you are satisfied with the accuracy of the ceremony content, and you will have the opportunity to check the text before the event takes place. You can be assured that a full and meaningful ceremony is created and is unique, celebrating and reflecting the life of the deceased. I work alongside Funeral Directors and can only organise the CEREMONY part of the Funeral. I am able to visit you at home to discuss the ceremony and your wishes will be respected. Please call me for an informal chat if you wish....Stephanie Anne Hike - areas covered up to 20 mile radius of Saltdean/Peacehaven. Phone: 01273 308677 email: stephaniehike@hotmail.co.uk

Myofascial Release Penny Koster, Holistic Pain Therapist Myofascial Release - the gentle release of connective tissue, I have a beautiful log cabin in my garden where I work from, it is an incredibly relaxing and gentle space. I have been a therapist for many years, I have a lot of different maybe your neck or both. Myofascial release is being called qualifications and training, but the therapy I am most the missing link and I passionately believe this to be true, I passionate about and know first‐hand works completely is believe in the not too distant future everyone will be having myofascial release, Myo-fascial is the connective tissue which these treatments, The cause of discomfort, pain is the collagen joins everything together, covers everything, fills all the gaps layer of the fascia, this is the layer that has to be released from holds you together, it has the memory of your life, it relays its stuck, dehydrated, no longer moving position! An Analogy messages to your brain faster than the nervous System, every if you step on a hosepipe the flow is impaired. I am highly single thing that happens to you in your life whether it be good trained in myofascial release, I am trained to Body read to or bad is stored in your subconscious and your fascial system, know where the problem is and then to un-stick it.. The whole The fascia is like a giant web made up of collagen, elastin and world needs to know about this treatment! I feel very ground substance it covers you from top to toe with no orifices passionately that everyone should understand how it works, unlike your skin, it moves constantly within your body, it and as much as possible be able to do it to themselves and penetrates, covers, protects every organ, muscle, ligament, each other. There is no such thing as 'I have that pain because tendon, bones everything- we are fascia, scar tissue is I'm getting old' No-one needs to have pain! Exceptions being damaged fascia that has gone hard and dehydrated, that is if you break a leg or have an accident et cetera, I give these why generally women get more lower back problems then treatments which are extremely powerful but at the Same men because they have hysterectomies, C-sections and end up time very gentle, I also educate people so that they can selfwith fascia that is damaged, dehydrated and hard (scar tissue) care in the future and when they have a pain they understand so no longer moves and consequently pulls on areas like the why it's happening, and what they can do about it, lower back, fascia can become hardened dehydrated and stop ABSOLUTELY NO ONE HAS TO BE IN PAIN. Everyone is different moving and therefore cause problems, discomfort, pain, sometimes it takes longer than others, IT IS WORTH THE WAIT! disease for many many different reasons I generally call it life. Another example because we are one complete unit If you're interested in having a treatment and want to learn everything is connected you could have a pain in your shoulder more about myofascial release and myself please go to: and the pain could possibly originate in your lower back, or www.trigger-points.me.uk or phone me on 07951 117826

Saltdean Lido Appeal
Put Your Name on a Brick To Help Get the Lido Open Next Summer Those of you who have been following the highs and lows of our five and a half year campaign to restore and re-open the lido site might already know about our latest challenge …there is not enough electricity capacity left in Saltdean to power the pools and a new £70,000 electricity sub-station needs to be built. Unfortunately we were unable to persuade either Brighton and Hove Council or UK Power Networks (which builds the infrastructure over which companies like EDF provide electricity) to help – and our existing grants cannot be reallocated due to strict compliance rules. And so, we are reaching out to lido lovers and asking them to help by adopting a brick in our Wall of Fame. This would make an unusual Christmas present and an everlasting gift for birthdays, anniversaries and remembering a loved one. The bricks can feature your name or a customised message from as little as £50. The wall won’t be built until next year and so you will receive a certificate that you could wrap up as a Christmas present. Whatever you choose, you can be assured that your contribution will make a difference in helping us raise the money we need. The Wall Of Fame can accommodate just 2,500 bricks so please act early and visit www.saltdeanlido.co.uk to find more details or call Bridget, one of our volunteer directors, on 07946 342 903 to discuss. Thank you so much in advance for your help. Onwards! The Saltdean Lido CIC volunteer directors ● Single Brick with black writing. 1 name eg Richard Foster. Up to 25 characters £50 ● Single brick with gold writing. 1 name. £85 ● Medium brick (2 x single) Multiple names - Richard, Rachel, Robert & Rose Foster. For example, In loving memory of Richard Foster who lived in Brighton all his life and loved this lido 1904-1984. This option is also suitable for businesses eg Richard Foster Plumbing and Heating . £500 – black or gold writing. ● Sponsor a beach hut. Your name and message will be in large letters on the outside and inside of the hut. Please contact us direct to discuss the dedication. When you come for a swim, this beach hut can be used exclusively by your party. £3,500 ● I confirm that I am a UK Income or Capital Gains taxpayer and I want Saltdean Lido to reclaim 25p of every £1 that I have given on this date. ● I am not a UK taxpayer Please write your name or message as you would like it to appear on the brick. Rottingdean & Saltdean Lions
Lions December update This month we have reminders of the training for the lifesaving defibrillator equipment that has been recently installed in Rottingdean and our involvement in the Rottingdean Smugglers Night with our Christmas Auction. Also, we are pleased to report help we have given to enable a schoolgirl to attend the school of her dreams with the presentation of a motorised wheelchair. Training for Rottingdean’s Defibrillator Please remember that there will be two training sessions for those who would wish to learn more about the procedure. These are to be held in the Main Hall of the Whiteway Centre, Whiteway Lane at 7.00pm on Wednesday 9th December and Tuesday 12th January. All interested parties are most welcome - please contact us below for the latest details. On behalf of the Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions, I would like to thank once again all involved in providing this life saving facility. Lions Christmas Auction at Rottingdean Smugglers Night Also, don’t forget that on Saturday 5 December, during the Rottingdean Smugglers Night celebrations the Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions will be involved by organising a Lions Christmas Auction in The White Horse from 7.30 pm with a break for the fireworks. It will be a great fun evening with a chance to buy some Christmas presents at bargain prices. Motorised wheelchair allows girl to go to school of her dreams As part of our service to the community, a presentation of a motorised wheelchair was made recently by the combined support of the Lions Clubs of Brighton and Rottingdean & Saltdean to Elle, aged 16, of Saunders Park Rise. She had wanted to attend the sixth form at Varndean College to study her preferred science A-levels. However, through a serious illness contracted two years ago, Elle is unable to walk and the college couldn’t provide someone to push her in a wheelchair between classrooms. This meant Elle was unable to attend the school of her dreams that would help her fulfil ambitions to go to university and support her aim for a desired career in pathology. The Lions learnt of her plight and stepped in to provide an electric wheelchair. This has resulted in Elle attending Varndean College. She is now enjoying her studies and is looking forward to following her career aspirations. Elle has a lot more independence now and she is able to see her friends much more often. She says that her life has been transformed.
The wheelchair supplier, Weald Mobility, gave a good price to the Lions while also providing free servicing for the first year to help Elle in her initial usage of her wheelchair. Elle’s mum and dad thanked the Lions immensely, stating that without their help Elle wouldn’t now be living her much happier and independent life. The presentation was made by Lion Presidents Guy Butterworth and Alistair Lang of Brighton and Rottingdean & Saltdean Lions respectively. If you would like more details and/or have a request for similar support, please see our contact details listed below. As this is the December edition of the Deans Magazine, Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions Club would like to wish the readers of this magazine a happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Also, the Lions would like to thank all the Deans Magazine readers that have supported them during 2015. If you would like more information on any of our service or fundraising activities or would like to book a place on the defibrillator training please contact Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions on 08458 339617 or email at info@rottingdeanandsaltdeanlions.org.uk. We are the Brighton and Hove Decorative and Fine Arts Society and we meet at the Brighthelm Centre in North Road, Brighton on the first Tuesday of the month at 10:45. At each meeting there is an illustrated talk by wellknown experts both in their subjects and in presentation chosen from a national list of speakers tested and approved by our panel at our London headquarters. Lectures happening in 2016 include Anthony Penrose on ‘The Boy who bit Picasso!’ Lucia Gahlin on ‘Egyptian Art for an Afterlife’ and Gillian Hovell on ‘ A Mediterranean Tour’ as well as talks on the Astors, the Rothschilds and the Sackville-Wests. Diana Lloyd will be guiding us through ‘20 Century Ceramics’ whilst Sue Berry takes us back to the decorations in later Tudor houses. You will probably also like to join us for study days and a range of outings and holidays, sometimes in conjunction with other local NADFAS groups, and you will certainly want to read our excellent quarterly arts magazine ‘Review’ which as well as listing events at major art venues across the country has a variety of fascinating articles and great presentation that matches the quality of any of the top art magazines available to buy at the newsstand. All this and free entry to lectures is included in the annual subscription of only £45.
The venue where we meet has just undergone a major renovation and is a lovely setting for the Tuesday morning lectures with new acoustics and projection in a comfortable, warm but wellventilated environment. Additionally the café where members like to gather from 10am for coffee or even breakfast also offers a wide lunch menu for those who want to dine and mix with friends after the show. Indeed the combination of these facilities with our lecture programme makes this the ideal society to make new friends with people of similar artistic and cultural tastes. So why not give us a try? You can choose up to two individual lectures to attend in a season for £5 each or go for full membership immediately. If you want to learn more do please ring me, Thomas Jones ( Publicity Secretary) on 01273 945407 or 07775 736126.

Do You You Have Have Any Do AnyUnloved Unlovedor Unwanted Spectacles? or Unwanted Spectacles? The Deans Optician in Longridge Avenue Saltdean is working in conjunction with the Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions Club to collect any unwanted spectacles in the locality. Please feel free to bring them into the shop and we will make sure that the Lions Club receives them. Lions Club International has always been particularly involved in initiatives associated with sight. Each year, spectacles are sorted and re-usable spectacles are sent to Medico France to be cleaned and graded and then on to eye camps in the developing world. The recycling of scrap material from broken glasses creates additional funds to support the operation. This is a fantastic opportunity to support a really worthy cause. Please help the Deans Optician to support Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions Club in this initiative. Jane Dale - Practice Manager Deans Optician . A Touch of Reiki Holistic Care for Animals and People Louise MHAO is a Qualified and Insured Complementary Therapist for Animals and People… My Journey I have worked hands on within the Hospitality Sector for many years, Qualified as a Training Advisor and Verifier working with Employers and their team to gain an a Credited Qualification, during this time in 2010 qualified in Reiki I and II, Prana Reiki, and Meditation which taught me a lot about “work life balance” and “quality of life”. I have always had a love for animals, always had animals in my life. For the last two years while completing my Diploma in Small Animals I worked voluntarily at the RSPCA with Cats, Dogs and Rabbits. On completing my Diploma having gained a range of skills and knowledge that contribute to the Healing itself which include Nutrition, Behaviour, Bereavement, Rescued Animals, Charity Work and Animal Self Selection. All animals benefit from Healing. It helps in a wide range of physical, emotional and psychological conditions, working holistically on the whole animal rather than an isolated problem. Healing is a natural therapy, promoting calm, peace and deep relaxation. Healing supports all animals at every stage of the rehabilitation. I work very closely with the Veterinary Practice to offer you and your animal a complementary and professional service. Just some of the Common Conditions I have worked with using a Holistic approach of Healing, Diet, Behaviour, Self- Selection, committed Guardians, Veterinary guidance and advice we have had successful results giving the Animal and the Guardian a very happy future together. ● Anxiety ● Stress ● Depression ● Aggression ● Cancer ● Osteoarthritis/ Arthritis ● Digestive Problems ● Respiratory Problems ● Bereavement We recognise that our senior and chronically ill animals have specific needs, and that sometimes our emotions become so full we would like someone to talk to. Supportive help can complement your veterinary care and relieve some of the stress you and your animal friend may be experiencing. Rescued Animals At Centres you will be asked about your home and lifestyle, to help them match you to your ideal dog. If you are going to buy a pedigree dog, only go to a reputable breeder. Never buy from shops or through newspaper adverts where many breeds are listed, as this could mean that the puppy is from a puppy farm. Make sure that you see all paperwork when you visit the puppy.
When rescuing an animal there are some important factors you need to ask yourself, if you are a family it must be a family agreement. A dog can live up to 15 years or more, a responsible owner must ensure the dog gets two walks a day, has play time, and is not left for more than 4 hours. Charity Work The local RSPCA are very welcoming to Complementary and Holistic approach to animal care. The animals I have worked with have taught me so much about a range of Common Conditions and Behaviour. I have a big heart for Egypt two rescue centres I work at throughout the year are Animal Care Egypt www.ace egypt.org.uk and Sharm Action For Animals www.sharmactionforanimals.com You can see my stories on Touch of Reiki Facebook- Like our page J Tuesday evening 18.30-19.15 Drop in Guided Meditation with Louise. News from the City Council
Building ‘Community Resilience’ in Brighton and Hove On behalf of Brighton and Hove City Council and partners, I am keen to discuss ways to build ‘Community Resilience’ in Brighton & Hove with interested groups. Community Resilience involves the community contributing to building resilient communities. (This would include for example supporting residents to assist with keeping pavements clear during heavy snowfall and looking after the vulnerable during cold weather or flooding etc). This is a national initiative and further information can be found at: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/resilience-in-societyDuring major health and environmental events, emergency services and council gritters cannot always get everywhere as soon as they would like, particularly when their own resources are stretched. A wide area power failure during severe winter weather would for example need a broad and on-going response and similar events elsewhere shows us that the community has an important part to play. Such incidents impact on vulnerable members of the community, and it is recognised that groups and individuals within communities are often in possession of information that statutory organisations are not.
Kevin Claxton Public Health Resilience Manager, Brighton and Hove City Council Tel 01273 574731 / E kevin.claxton@nhs.net
Emergency services, Local Authorities and other responders do have plans in place to protect the community, however it is also recognised that enabling people to help themselves reduces vulnerability during an incident and enables more rapid recovery afterwards. There is growing acknowledgement that we can do more in this area to engage with communities, and there is clear benefit in partnership working to help build stronger communities. Community representatives have said clearly at open events held in the City that there is an appetite within communities to seize opportunities to help themselves. The City Council and emergency services are linked to the Sussex Resilience Forum' (SRF), the Sussex multiagency responders group which looks at risks and hazards, and puts plans in place to reduce vulnerability to them. (More information is available at http://www.sussexemergency.info/ ). The SRF has a 'Sussex Community Resilience Partnership' representing community groups from across Sussex. Historically groups have been Parish Council-led, but as B&H has few parishes, an alternative approach is needed. Locally within Brighton and Hove, colleagues and I from SRF partners are working to make our city and its local communities more resilient. We are engaged with Neighbourhood Watch in Saltdean, Woodingdean Residents Association Resilience Group, and other groups across the City, and can jointly provide leadership, advice, guidance, template community plans and other resources, to help with local planning. Building ‘Community Resilience’ at B&H therefore represents opportunities for Local Area Teams, Voluntary Groups and any other group who may be engaged with people in City communities to get involved. Please contact me if you would like to discuss this work further, or know more about ‘Community Resilience’ in Brighton and Hove. To advertise call 01273 586527 or email info@deansmagazine.co.uk
