Welcome

Welcome to the July Edition Our regular photographer Colette Langton has provided the perfect photograph for a summer cover this month and features Kai Samaroo and Dan Jeffrey testing out the new Lido pool shortly before it opened in mid June. If you have had chance to have a look at the new Lido you will know how drastically it has changed and improved, there is now has a secondary paddling pool in addition to the main pool, it looks like a great destination for a day out and we wish them every success. With new beginnings this month at the Lido we must also say a farewell with our final lifeboat history article (pg 53), We would like to thank Alan Young who has tirelessly prepared these articles for us each month, and remind readers that the RNLI benefits anyone who uses the sea - pretty much all of us then - so don’t forget to lend them your support. Please keep the local articles coming in, we have a lot of community involvement in the Deans Magazine and are always happy to hear from readers. Keith - Editor

Is My Mac Safe? For years the consensus has been that if you have an Apple Mac computer, or an iPhone, you’re safe from viruses. Whether this was true or not before, it’s now no longer the case. Clifden House Seaford A heartfelt account of a parent’s dementia diagnosis Newhaven resident Richard Hewson, 78, was diagnosed with dementia in 2013. His son Steve describes the effect that this diagnosis had on his family. “We noticed a change four years ago,” says Steve, 54. “Subtle things like when he received birthday cards he’d place them upside down on the mantelpiece, or attempt to read an upside down newspaper. “One day my mum, Maureen, was waiting at the bus stop with dad and decided to pop into the bank for a minute, leaving him at the bus stop. When she returned he’d disappeared. He’d just got on the bus - without her or a ticket.” In his younger years Richard, known as Ricky, was a member of the Royal Navy. Then he worked in management at Bevan Funnell, Newhaven, specialising in reproduction furniture, a job he loved. Ricky also enjoyed socialising and was chairman of the darts team and pool league. Ricky was sadly diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2013, and for the first two years he and Maureen were able to carry on life pretty much as normal. Then the situation started to deteriorate. “I got a phone call in the middle of the night from mum, asking me to come round to try and stop Dad from leaving the house,” said Steve. “Mum had been trying to cope with all this on her own, playing down how bad the situation had become,” said Steve. “We discovered that mum hadn’t really slept for two weeks and had been sitting up with dad to make sure he didn’t leave the house.” After this incident Ricky was taken to hospital, and then placed in a care home in Eastbourne. Steve said: “I’m a paramedic so I know which are the good care homes in the area.” Steve called Clifden House in Seaford to see if it had a space. Luckily, one had become free that very day and Ricky was able to move to Clifden House Dementia Care Centre as a permanent resident. “Mum didn’t want to believe this was happening. She wanted to keep dad at home for as long as possible. “She understands though that she can’t deal with dad at home safely. She takes comfort in knowing that he’s now safe and professionally cared for. “He was a really good dad,” says Steve. “He was also a very intelligent man. It’s sad that he’s ended up at the mercy of this cruel disease.” “However I’ve learnt that although it’s difficult, you’ve got to be really positive. Remember the good times and the person they were. What’s happening now isn’t him; it’s the disease.” Clifden House Dementia Care Centre is rated ‘Good’ by CQC, Claremont Road, Seaford, 01323 896460, www.clifdenhouse.co.uk

Osteopathy tips

Bridgeford’s Best Bites:

Balancing the Body with Breathing (Pranayama) Pranayama means ‘to stretch the breath’. It is prudent to advance gradually in any form of stretching that we do with the physical body. When stretching the physical body the ligaments act as elastic tissue and have a great capacity to stretch, provided the extent of flexibility is approached and accommodated gradually by the entire organism. At the same time, the muscle tissue needs to be strong enough to provide adequate support for the increased flexibility, maintaining a healthy balance. If ligaments are stretched too rapidly beyond their limit injury results, ranging from tearing of a few fibres to a complete ligamentous tear, requiring an extended recovery period. When stretching the breath, it seems logical that the same caution should be applied with the same aim of maintaining balance in the system as a whole. In the physical mechanics of breathing, we are moving many body tissues as we take air into the lungs. The lungs themselves, the pleural lining around the lungs and between the fissures, the fascial tissue between the lungs and all surrounding organs and structures – heart, oesophagus, diaphragm, ribs, sternum, spine – particularly the cervical spine from which the lungs are suspended. Not forgetting that all the nerves and blood vessels are housed in this elastic fascial tissue that surrounds just about every structure in the body. Also the structures affected by these adjacent structures, in particular all the abdominal organs that are affected by the diaphragm as it moves with the breath. Injury patterns and restrictions in any of these structures can become more apparent when the breath is stretched further than accustomed. A restricted rib or cervical vertebra, e.g., may start to move more freely in response to gently expanding the breath. Gradually, with careful expansion of the breath, deeper tensions may start to release. When deep fascial tissue tensions in and between organs are released therapeutically, they can release deep tensions that may have been held in the body for a long period of time, without the person being consciously aware of them. This requires a deep adjustment within the whole system to regain an equilibrium that is ultimately beneficial though perhaps at first a little disorientating. I feel that a similar release can be gained with careful Pranayama. If the stretch of the breath and the tissues is gradual, the body can easily accommodate the micro changes whilst maintaining equilibrium. Imagine the effect of tension in the pleural tissue. Suppose that this tension pulls through to the diaphragm, affecting the breathing generally and the entire abdominal system via the restricted diaphragmatic movement. It may also pull through to the psoas muscle affecting the kidneys, which normally travel 600 metres along the psoas every day. The tension in the psoas muscle may pull unevenly on the hip and the lumbar spine affecting the nerve distribution to surrounding muscles and organs. The body considers organs and blood vessels to be more important

than joints for survival, so it is happy for the person to have an adapted posture creating tension in a joint in order to make space to minimise or avoid any effective tension in an organ. Imagine now that the breath is suddenly stretched, releasing all the tension in the pleural tissue. The dynamics of the forces held throughout the body to help compensate for this tension are now no longer required. Suddenly, the accommodation and adaption around the stresses on the diaphragm, kidneys, lumbar spine, hip and perhaps reflex nerve responses all need to change, yet the change is far too great for the body to accommodate, resulting in imbalance. I feel the principal is similar to overstretching a ligament by excessive physical stretching, just that the physical stretching is this time accomplished with the breath. Gentle breathing techniques allow the person to develop control over the breathing mechanism and the rhythm of the breath; bonding with the lobes of the lungs and the breath whilst having a beneficial effect on the body structures and circulation. The use of physical postures with this breath further develops the strength of the breath. There is also a powerfully relaxing effect on the large Solar Plexus nerve centre, our emotional brain, helping to keep it decongested. We are happy to advise you on your health matters and offer a free 15 minute joint and spinal check, without obligation. Local history - Part 62

Ovingdean Dig Mike Laslett

If you pass St Wulfran’s Church, Ovingdean you will notice some excavations in the field to the north of the Church…

Don’t worry; no one is building a Tesco Express! The excavations to uncover Ovingdean’s ancient history are by the Brighton and Hove Archaeological Society and have been taking place each summer for several years.

Above and below: excavation site at St Wulfran’s

See us online at www.deansmagazine.co.uk

The fact that the earliest settlement in Ovingdean was in this field to the north of the church explains why the original church entrance was on the north side. In the north wall you can see where the original door has been blocked up.

37 So far the dig has revealed many pits, post holes and flint walls some of which are evidence of a 13 Century house. The rest of the complex is still revealing itself. The finds uncovered during the dig have included a bone gaming piece and a wood lined well. Excavations take place each Saturday and Wednesday during the summer months. The public are welcome to observe but are requested to enter the field using the stile at the lych-gate. Further information is available from the BHAS website: www.brightonarch.org.uk I started this article with the phrase “If you pass St Wulfran’s Church,” but this is not recommended. You should pause to visit what is probably the oldest building in Brighton. It also has a fine interior with decorations by Charles Eamer Kempe. He added the ‘e’ to the family name to appear more mediaeval! The Kemp family home was the nearby Ovingdean Hall while the Kemp family tomb opposite the church door bears the family arms: three wheatsheaves. Also in the churchyard are the graves of Magnus Volk and of William Willett who developed the Willett Estate in Hove and introduced British Summertime. Two female pioneers are commemorated by the Jex-Blake memorial, reminding us of a pioneer female surgeon and the grave of Helena Normanton, the first female barrister in the UK.

Beacon Hill Nature Reserve Those of you that walk on Beacon Hill regularly will have seen the very obvious changing seasons as we enter summer. The grasses are now in seed and reaching 2ft high in places (approx. 60cm to our younger readers!). Our wildlife and butterfly man, Peter Whitcomb, is taking regular inventories and his latest sightings range from Goatsbeard (including a hybrid between Goatsbeard and Salsify), Field Scabious, Houndstongue, Sea Beet, Silverweed, Dog Rose, Knotted Hedge Parsley and Dogs Violet to the Common Spotted Orchid (not so common really !!!). Butterflies are merrily fluttering around and a beautiful female Common Spotted Blue showed herself to be very photographic. Come for a walk and see how many varieties of butterfly you can spot. Peter will be leading a Butterfly walk on Thursday 3 August, meeting at the picnic benches at 10.00.

Common Spotted Blue Butterfly

The flip side of all this lush plant growth is the dreaded ragwort which is showing it’s pretty but “ugly” head already. The Friends’ focus for July and August will be the annual Ragwort Pulling Extravaganza. To allow those of you that are unavailable during the working week we are putting on a special Saturday session on 8 July so you can come and join in the pulling fun. We will have a marquee for breaks from the sun (or shelter from the rain !) and hopefully can make a fun day. The Beacon Hub Café Kiosk will be open for light refreshments (and they have a loo). There will be 2 sessions, morning 10AM to Midday and afternoon 2 to 4PM. Come along and join the Friends for the feel good factor of some good old fashioned hands-on, big scale, weed pulling. No specific skills are required on our volunteer days just a willingness to help out. Long trousers/sleeves and gardening gloves are recommended for ragwort pulling. Workdays are the 2ⁿ Wednesday and 4 Friday of the month. Upcoming dates are July 12 & 28 along with Saturday July 8 for a Weekend Ragwort Pulling Extragavanza, August 9 and 25. If you need an added incentive, after our Friday workdays we wander down to the Beacon Hub Kiosk Café for a cuppa and slice of cake – because we’re worth it. New volunteers are always welcome to join us, meeting 10.00 at Longhill Road, Ovingdean, entrance to the Nature Reserve. Tools are provided but please wear study shoes/boots/gloves. Neighbourhood Watch

NHW Update Are you a switched on parent? As parents we naturally want what's best for our children. We want them to be healthy and happy ...and that includes doing the things that are appropriate for their age and maturity. One thing that is becoming more concerning to parents is the safety of children on line. Whilst the Internet is a fantastic resource for learning ,communicating and entertainment, it is also largely unregulated and unfortunately the channel of choice for many people who have bad intentions and are not fussy about who they are harming. As adults we are aware of the potential issues connected with being on line. Children, however, are more innocent and usually more trusting and certainly less prepared to handle the negative situations they may come across on the Internet. Children are full of natural curiosity and that is why today you need to be switched on to how to protect children on line not just with parental controls and specialist software that you may already be using, but by engaging with your

children from an early age, and keeping engaged with them as they grow up in their digital world. Get Safe Online - the UK Government's preferred source of online safety advice - has put together an invaluable guide for parents of children of all ages. Partnering with Neighbourhood Watch and Norton, a guide can be found on www.getsafeonline.org and takes you through different ages of your children, detailing some of the risks they face on line and suggesting practical ways in which you can engage with them and helping you put the appropriate steps in place to keep them safe. Visit the website and click on the 'Be a switched on parent' button on the home page. The advice is easy to follow and implement and is completely free. Brighton lifeboats A short monthly series on their history Part Sixteen: The present time The current Brighton Lifeboat, an Atlantic 85 operational number B852, named Random Harvest has been on station since September 2011 and has carried out over 300 service launches during that time with another fifty or so launches by relief boats while it was away on refit. It represents the ultimate in current inshore lifeboat design and technology and forms the link between the offshore lifeboats and the smaller types of inshore vessels. This is the final episode of our short series during which we have covered the intermittent history of Brighton boats from the first authenticated one in 1806 through to the present day. We have mentioned the formation of the Coastguards and their changing roles, the formation of vital support groups such as the Seamans Missions, the Royal Humane Society and many others. Most of all we have focused on the formation of the RNLI, their ideals, their funding, their promotion of lifeboat designs, their promotion of building techniques and the uniform training standards of their crews until they have become the world's most respected Lifesaving Service upon which many other countries have modelled their own organisations. While originally thought of as a lifesaving service for mariners, as times change and public leisure use of water everywhere has altered, the RNLI have changed to match the needs. They now control the Beach Lifeguards over much of the country, setting a uniform level of training and equipment. This is done wherever the local Council has requested their assistance in expertise but with an agreement over funding and are present on approximately 250 UK beaches. Stations are now present in many inland and freshwater locations, the best known being the three London Stations with Tower Bridge being the busiest with nearly 400 call-outs a year. Because of this Tower has crews on permanent 24 hour stand-by with the requirement to be on their way in ninety seconds! Sadly the majority of their work is recovering or assisting personnel and rarely for boats. Emergency stand-by teams are based around the country to assist not only with UK flood emergencies but have also responded to International calls for assistance. Avoiding accidents by education at all levels from guidance to all seafarers, to talks, school visits, station visits, etc. is also vital and helps take some of the load off the crews who, being mostly volunteers, all have jobs.

As a very rough estimate it costs about ÂŁ500,000 everyday to run the RNLI, with it's 242 stations, some 350 lifeboats and around 9000 launches per year. All of this comes from public donations, so your assistance is vital in any way that you can help. Please enjoy safely whatever time you spend on or near the water but importantly respect the water and be aware of the possibly dangers. If you, or your group, club, school, etc would like a talk or a station visit or you would like to help or be involved with fundraising in any way then please call Margaret Kimber on 07786 446901 Compiled by Alan Young,

Cinema Saltdean Film Review

A United Kingdom

Cert. 12A

Politics, romance and Winston Churchill’s broken promise Not that Winston Churchill plays a part in this film but he did play a massive part in what happens in the country that was to become Botswana. This is the story of King Seretse Khama of Bechuanaland and how his loving but controversial marriage to a British white woman, Ruth Williams, put his kingdom into political & diplomatic turmoil. It’s 1947 and a different world; technologically, socially and politically. In London, race, ethnicity and colour are openly discriminated against: attacks on blacks in the streets are commonplace. One black man who is the target of such an attack is an African king, though the attackers are unaware of his status. David Oyelowo (‘Selma’, ‘The Help’, and whose stage work includes playing Henry VI, Parts I, II and II for the Royal Shakespeare Company) plays Seretse Khama, who, whilst living in the UK, has legitimate claim to lead his people, back in Bechuanaland. Ruth Williams (Rosamunde Pike – ‘Girl on a Train’, ‘What we Did on our Holidays’) acts against family wishes by marrying Seretse. She inadvertently becomes queen of a black nation. On arrival in Bechuanaland, she is immediately rejected by her husband’s subjects and life becomes tough. This is intriguing enough in itself, arguably enough of a story for a lesser film. Here, however, it is merely the hors d’oeuvres for a story that puts the couple at the centre of a political storm both at home and away: a storm that that has the potential to wreck the lives of a whole nation of people and their economy. The plot becomes more tangled as European speculators arrive, intending to plunder the mineral wealth of the country; whilst there is divided opinion as to whether Seretse should have any claim to lead them, since Seretse has forced a white queen upon them. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, plans are afoot to banish Seretse from his country altogether; leaving ‘open season’ for the plunderers. Royal family status meant something different in 1947 Bechuanaland; not a Buckingham Palace in sight. Prejudice against Ruth mirrors the racial prejudice of London. Political power play and unscrupulous political jostling contrive to drive Seretse and Ruth apart: but does love conquer all? Is justice done? And do the people survive the shenanigans?

A sterling performances here from Rosamunde Pike who breathes life into this true story. The other star of the film is the location. This is the first feature film made in Botswana; and this adds to the authenticity of the whole. The house to which David takes Ruth is the actual house that the real David and Ruth lived in; found almost by chance by the film crew. Oyelowo puts in a balanced performance, much as he did in ‘Selma’. It is a tribute to his integrity as an actor that he carefully chooses his roles, always picking those stories for which he has a personal interest and true passion: perhaps that’s what energises his performances. A moving and ultimately uplifting film. No film next month BUT watch this space in the August edition for details of an exciting exclusive movie event in the autumn - a Cinema Saltdean scoop! Jon

Time to Talk Befriending Time to Talk Befriending is a local Charity that helps older people who feel lonely, invisible and forgotten to “feel like they are living again” and “no longer feel trapped inside their own home”. Here is what one of our scheme members has said about what we do and her befriender: "Meeting my befriender and her son has transformed my life, I am not sure where this poem came from but when I read this poem it immediately reminded me of all the kindness and care I have received from the befriending service:” ‘Thank you for loving, for giving and sharing, thank you for listening, helping and caring, for all the wonderful things that you do, but most of all thank you for just being you!’ – Scheme Member

This is what one of our amazing volunteers has said: “It’s been a very pleasant surprise that, while I knew that I would feel good sharing my time with my befriending match, I have been astonished at how much I learn every time I see her. It’s completely changed my opinion of older people and has changed the way I behave with people in the street too… I always make time for a chat with someone in the supermarket queue, for example, as you’ve no idea how lonely the rest of their day might be.” – Volunteer Time to Talk Befriending are currently looking for volunteers in Brighton & Hove, particularly in the following areas: ● Rottingdean ● Saltdean ● Telscombe Cliffs ● Woodingdean If you can spare an hour of your time every fortnight and would like to make a positive difference in

Summer at The Grange The Grange Gallery continues with a refreshing and stimulating variety of exhibitions for July. 23 June – ll July. HORIZONS. This child-friendly exhibition, LAND SEA SPACE, will show the works of Carol Lawson, Nichola Campbell and Chris McEwan. Carol Lawson’s pastel drawings celebrate the ever-changing patterns and colour of the South Downs. While Nichola Campbell’s new work is inspired by sea, rock pools and creatures of the seashore, working with ink on wood blocks. And Chris McEwan illustrates his love of machines, mechanical devices and his own collection of space toys. “Most people assume they know about robots but, faced with several hundred, experience a childlike sense of wonder.” 13 – 18 July. THE LITTLE PEOPLE PHOTOGRAPHS; this is a childfriendly exhibition by Paul Rowland of toy people photographed in unusual places. To quote Paul Rowland, “These are the figures that you would normally find on model railway layouts like Hornby train sets; the scale is 1:87 or OO which makes them as tall as your finger nail”. 20 July – 8 August. Mick Bensley, well-known Rottingdean marine artist, will be showing new works. He divides his time between painting and teaching. “I continue to paint a range of subjects including portraits of people, their pets, landscapes, seascapes.” THE Grange Gallery, The Grange, The Green, Rottingdean. Opening times: 10.30 - 16.00 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday (closed Wednesday) and Sunday 14.00 - 16.00. After having visited the exhibitions, why not relax in the lovely Edwin Lutyens / Gertrude Jekyll tea garden? You can indulge yourself on the courtyard, on the lawn or in the newly renovated small barn which has been renamed the Gertrude Jekyll room.

We are pleased to announce that on 7, 8 and 9 July the Synergy Theatre company will be performing the wonderful classic play “The Importance of Being Ernest” by Oscar Wilde in the gardens of The Grange, The Green, Rottingdean; each performance will start at 19.00 and tickets (£12 / £10 / £8 – children 16 and under) will be available from Mad Wax Candles, High Street, Rottingdean, by telephoning 01323 890974 or from www.thesynergytheatre.co.uk . We now have over 80 members from all over the Deans catchment area… We are affiliated to the Royal Horticultural Society which means, among other things, a free visit to Wisley every year. We meet on the first Thursday evening of every month and there are a variety of activities arranged including speakers on a wide range of topics, a plant auction, quiz night, Christmas meal and a bring a plate supper.

If you are interested in joining or would like some more information, please visit our website at www.ovingdeangardening.webs.com or telephone Richard or Angie on 303183. We look forward to hearing from you or seeing you at the show.

The highlight of the year is the Annual Village Show. This it is being held on Saturday 5 August. The Village hall is transformed by the huge variety of flowers, fruit and vegetables, hanging baskets, patio plants, flower arrangements, cookery and photography. Members of the public are very welcome from 2pm and it is free. There will be tea, coffee and home made cakes to enjoy, hopefully on the sun drenched patio. Members of the gardening club are encouraged to enter as many of the categories as they wish. It is a really fun event, competitive but friendly. The club also runs outings throughout the year.
