Welcome
Welcome to the June Edition We have a quick update on the Lido appeal on page 67 of this month’s magazine, they are getting very close to the target so it would be a tragedy to miss it at this stage, yes even the staff of The Deans Magazine have pitched in! Last month I got out to explore some of the Deans countryside on my bike and after a long toil up Bazehill Road was rewarded with some spectacular views, a couple of pictures even made it to our Facebook page to inspire anyone who fancies making the trip themselves. The only thing that marred the experience was the pile of rubbish someone had fly-tipped by the side of the road up there, this is an all too common problem in the area, so if you see anyone fly-tipping please do report it. Do I Have a Virus? With basic security in place, a virus can sometimes sneak past us and infect our computers; even the very best anti-virus software can be undermined by human error. So how do you know if you have a virus? We’ve compiled a list of five warning signs that, should your computer suffer from, would indicate it’s probably best to get it checked out. Peek-a-boo: Like an unwanted Jack-in-a-box, if your computer starts displaying unwanted pop-ups you need to take note. As frustrating as they are, never click on a suspicious pop-up – even if it prompts you to act by displaying the message, “a virus was detected”. Now Where Did I File That? If you can’t find files that you are sure you filed, or if you can no longer open files, you may have inadvertently installed a type of malware that merrily goes about deleting files and programs, moving them around, or encrypting them.
Crash and Burn: A virus isn’t the only reason that your computer of laptop keeps crashing, but it can be a tell-tale sign. If you are also getting odd error messages popping up regularly then be it virus or not, you have a problem that you need to get checked out. “Did you mean to send me that?” If your friends and relatives tell you that they have received an odd email from you, or an unusual message on Facebook or other messaging platforms, your email may have been hijacked. Change your passwords as your starting point, and its always worth running a virus scan unless…. Access Denied: Some viruses know that their best bet is to initially disable your computer’s protection. So, whilst we would always recommend running a scan by your anti-virus if you have any suspicions, if you can’t open or install an anti-virus program or your firewall, it may be too late.

MP Joins Care Staff of Dementia Care Centre to Celebrate Achievements Local MP Maria Caulfield joined staff at Seaford’s Clifden House Dementia Care Centre to congratulate the team on the home’s recent CQC ‘good’ rating. Established almost 50 years ago, Clifden House Dementia Care Centre has capacity for 59 residents. For the last 20 years, it has purely focused on delivering specialised care for dementia sufferers. At the forefront of this dementia care are 54 staff whose commitment to providing exceptional care was commented on by the inspectors. To celebrate these achievements, Clifden House has been given a new look with new branding, new uniforms and a lovely new bus. Maria Caulfield, MP for Lewes, said: “This is a great achievement for all the staff at Clifden House and I congratulate them on their ‘good’ CQC rating. Working in nursing myself, I fully appreciate the level of care required to achieve this.” Nial Joyce of Clifden House said: “We are very lucky to have the staff we have at Clifden House. The team provides kind, compassionate and dignified care to everyone in the home. It means so much that Maria came out to support and recognise the work we do for our residents here. Many thanks to her for making the effort.” Local man Barry, whose wife is cared for at Clifden House said: “As soon as I walked into Clifden House, Seaford, I had a really
good feeling about the place. As a specialist in dementia care it is totally geared up for Alison’s condition. For the first time in a long time, I had a sense of calm. I just knew that Alison would be happy here – I even got to choose her room.” Nial said: “We understand that it is never easy making the decision for a loved one to go into care. There are very often mixed feelings of guilt and relief, worry and peace. Whatever care home people chose, it is very important that residents treat it as their own home. “Nevertheless, it is important to monitor and chat to the staff, look at the care they provide and their interaction with those in their care. A visible positive interaction between staff and residents should be just as uppermost in your mind as taking in the furnishings, decor and gardens.” Clifden House provides specialist and individually tailored care and support to people living with dementia, all with varying levels of need. About Clifden House Dementia Care Centre: Established 50 years ago, Clifden House Dementia Care Centre in Seaford specialises in providing residential and respite dementia care. It enables the individual to lead an active lifestyle with privacy, dignity and security. www.clifdenhouse.co.uk 01323 896460

Osteopathy tips
Bridgeford’s Best Bites:
Texter’s Neck A stress injury caused by extended periods bending forwards in a slumped position (neck flexion) while texting or working on phones, tablets or laptops. We have similar posture when reading and desk workers often developed a Dowager’s hump at the top of the spine. We now more regularly spend extended periods of time attached to our devices using poor posture. Children and teens are at particular risk. Anatomy: After repeatedly using this posture for long periods of time, the natural curve of the neck (lordosis) is altered, placing increasing stress on the neck. The body adapts to the posture with far reaching effects; ligaments, muscles, spine, nerves, discs, fascial attachments and organs can all be compromised. Postural distortions can compromise the balance of the ligaments (anterior and posterior longitudinal) around the spine, putting the discs at risk. The arms can be considered as extending from the neck; the shoulder blades attach to the neck as do the heart and lungs; basically elastic tissue called fascia connects everything in the body. Our structure governs our function and we need to consider posture in its entirety for positive effect. Symptoms: Aches, pains, tension and stiffness in neck, upper back and shoulders, with reduced motion and headaches are the initial symptoms. Later symptoms include weakness, numbness and tingling in the arms, hands and fingers, trapped nerves, spinal misalignment and degeneration, disc problems, arthritis; eventually digestive disturbances, cardiovascular problems and loss of lung capacity. Causes: Sitting, standing or laying with the neck and head slumped forwards puts increasing pressure on the neck and spine; more slumping creates more pressure. With poor seated posture the entire spine can be slumped, compressing internal organs; the bottom is often slid forwards in the seat putting excessive pressure on the lumbar spine. Diagnosis and Treatment: Your doctor will rule out other causes of symptoms and treat findings. We only need to look around and see the number of people habitually adopting this posture to know there is a problem. Specific conditions and symptoms can be diagnosed, and can be far reaching when damage is well established in the system. We are better off correcting the posture and habits before the symptoms manifest and we are all walking around looking at the
ground unable to lift our heads by the time we are 40, 50 or younger! Prevention: Learn to adopt good posture; keep the head up straight so that the ears are in line with the shoulders (lift your phone to eye level!), keep the spine straight; when sitting, sit on the bottom bones (ischial tuberosity) with the lower back against the back of the chair, the chair base no longer than the thighs to prevent pressure on the back of the knees, feet flat on the floor. Osteopathic/Manual Management: Assess posture, habits and symptoms; test function and flexibility of all structures; work manually to correct postural abnormalities in the spine, joints, ligaments, muscles, nerves as well as balancing/releasing fascial connections including between organs and structure. Prescribe restorative exercises to help correct posture and strengthen weaknesses (including core strength), stretch and release the tightness. Re-educate regarding postural habits, ergonomics, general health and exercise. We are happy to advise you on your health matters and offer a free 15 minute joint and spinal check, without obligation. Friends of Beacon Hill
Beacon Hill Nature Reserve We have waved a fond farewell to our sheep for this season. They have done a fine job for 52 days of munching through the scrub to ensure we see an abundance of flowers throughout the summer. We had 2 unexpected lambs arrive, the 1st was unclaimed so went to the farm to be hand-reared but the 2nd bonded well with his mother and spent a few happy weeks following her around the hill. In May we started to build a butterfly bank at the western corner of the Hub car park. We spent a lovely warm morning infilling the chalk and grassy edges with a selection of downland plants not limited to but including greater knapweed, field & small scabious, violets, cowslips, oxeye daisy, common knapweed. We’ve left a gap so that wheel and push chair users can still access the pathway that runs parallel to the coast road. Whilst the Chosen Ones were given the top notch job of plugging the Butterfly Bank the others split into 2 groups and moved onto the extension, carefully looking out for any skylark nests. The Planters, armed with trowels and watering cans, spread out and introduced downland flowering plants to the extension whilst group 3, the Pullers, headed to one of the old putting greens to hunt out the unwelcome and rapidly spreading Hoary Cress and drag it and its roots from the ground. Just when we thought we were having a rest prior the appearance of the summer Ragwort, our conservation
expert has identified this weedy invader, requesting that we do all we can to pull it. Many hands make light work so if you want to come and help we will welcome you with open arms. Friends of Beacon Hill will be holding a Quiz Night at the Ovingdean Village Hall on Friday 20 July, Doors and bar open 8PM Quiz starts 8:30. We are fundraising to replace the decrepit picnic benches at the southerly end of the Nature Reserve. We will also be manning a stall at the inaugural Ovingdean Green Festival on 23 June so come along and say hello. We meet 2ⁿ Wednesday and 4 Friday of each month at 10AM at the Beacon Hub Cafe Kiosk. Tools are provided but please wear sturdy shoes/boots/gloves. A Unique House
In 1930’s rural England the modern international style must have caused some shock and disbelief… They were also responsible for the three houses built speculatively on isolated plots in Wicklands Avenue Saltdean for £550 each in 1934 for a Mr Snow.
Courtesy of Punch Magazine
Such design was even commented on in a Punch cartoon of the time where the owner is saying to her bemused friends “Do tell me you loathe it.” The house here is based on High and Over, Amersham, Bucks with its circular water tower. You will probably recognise it from the ‘Poirot’ TV series. It was designed by the New Zealand architect Amyas Connell whose practice, Connell, Ward & Lucas, was the leading light of Modernist architecture in 1930s England. Architectural students Connell and Ward had set off from New Zealand and had to work their passage shovelling coal to such an extent they could not hold a drawing pencil for some weeks following their arrival in London!

41 The only one remaining is Unique, One Other was destroyed by fire, while 62 was demolished and replaced by a bungalow in 1994.
‘Bethany’
Historically, Britain has welcomed foreign architectural styles, with Italian and French Gothic used for our cathedrals, Italian Renaissance used by the Tudors, while Greek or Roman Classical styles were adopted by the Georgians. Therefore, it seems strange that in the 1920s and 1930s there was such a slow reception of continental Modernist architecture, developed largely in Germany and France. Perhaps after the horrors of World War One, Britain turned its back on the continent, politically and culturally. Another reason, no doubt, was the great popularity of Art Deco which preceded it.
Above: 56 Wicklands Avenue (Unigue) today
Another example of this architectural style is 13 Founthill Avenue. Designed by Claude H Cowney in 1934, it was the home of the music hall entertainer Will Fyffe in the late Thirties. He was best known for writing the song “I belong to Glasgow.” At 33 Arundel Drive West is a further example, originally called Belford it is now named Bethany. It was designed by Duke & Simpson, once again in 1934.
It would seem that after the horrors of The Great War, the General Strike and the recession that people either wanted to look towards a bold new future or look centuries back to the Tudors! Acknowledgements: Black & white photos: Architectural Press Colour photos: The Author

Neighbourhood Watch
What is Cuckooing? What is Cuckooing? How to spot the signs I had the pleasure of attending the Saltdean, Rottingdean and Ovingdean Neighbourhood Watch meeting recently. I raised the issue of Cuckooing, a new concept to the group but something which is important to be aware of and for you all to keep an eye on each other and report suspicions to Sussex Police. County Line drug dealing is the practice of metropolitan crime gangs supplying drugs in Sussex towns. Dealers are exploiting the vulnerable and taking over their addresses to use as a safe-haven for them to store and supply drugs – this is known as cuckooing. Identifying cuckooed addresses is hugely important, Police and Brighton & Hove Council can then act to safeguard the individuals and catch the criminals responsible. Have you seen:
● An increase in visitors to one specific address all times of the day? ● Signs of drug misuse around a premises? ● Vulnerable people seen with strangers? ● Individuals with large amounts of cash? ● Individuals taking over a vulnerable resident’s address? A cuckooed address represents a significant risk to the individuals being cuckooed and to the wider communities. By Inspector Paul Ransome If you have concerns in relation to an individual or address please call 101 or email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk. Always dial 999 in an emergency. Local Yoga Teacher

Why everyone should try yoga “Yoga isn’t about touching your toes, folding yourself in two or standing on your head,” Heather Deaville from deavilleyoga.com told us. And she should know, she loves yoga, and has recently started teaching a new Monday evening class at St Martin’s Church Hall in Saltdean. Heather understands that some people find the thought of going to a yoga class intimidating, and although she is endlessly enthusiastic about it now, she admits that hasn’t always been the case.
offer everyone. All are welcome on the mat at Deaville Yoga.” Heather is teaching Hatha Flow Yoga every Monday evening, 7.30-8.30pm at St Martin’s Hall on Longridge Avenue in Saltdean. The class is suitable for beginners, all equipment is provided and a trial class is just £5. So why not give it a go? For more information visit www.deavilleyoga.com/hathayoga Or call 07974 250207
“I first tried yoga when I was 18 and, let's put it this way, it wasn’t for me. I rediscovered it in my 30s and now I’m hugely passionate about its physical and emotional benefits. She says: “There’s nothing to be worried about when trying your first yoga class. Common fears are not being flexible enough, looking silly (we all look silly) or everyone being ‘better’ than you. Yoga is a practice, and everyone is at different stages in a class. “Yoga is about connecting to your body and breath, and stopping to really listen to yourself for a change. It gives you time to switch off from the rest of the world and really tune in to what your body is telling you.” Heather continues: “I am by no means a perfect yogi — I can't do all of the advanced poses and on a Monday my balance is less tree and more spaghetti. But I love it! Come wobbly days or sturdy days, yoga gives me the physical and mental space I need to get the most out of life. “I'm not the most serious yoga teacher, but I am incredibly passionate about how much this ancient art has to

Cinema Saltdean Film Review
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri Cert. 15
Hollywood has been getting it all badly wrong offscreen for far too long; and, so, watching the Oscars this year seemed itself out of step with Hollywood, since it seemed to have got it all right. Inventive, original films and good filmmaking were rewarded. Terrific performances did not go unnoticed. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is a prime example. Witty script, brilliantly directed, an original storyline and outstanding performances. Director Martin McDonagh brings together Oscar® winners Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell and Oscar® nominated Woody Harrelson, in a blackly comic film that rejoices in wrong-footing its audience. Three Billboards is about a mother, Mildred (Frances McDormand: ‘Fargo’ ‘Moonrise Kingdom’) who takes on the local authorities in a small working class southern America town, after they fail to catch the culprit who murdered her daughter. Mildred decides to take the unprecedented step of renting three billboards, on the outskirts of town, to ask the question ‘why no arrests?’.
Woody Harrelson (‘Natural Born Killers’, ‘War for the Planet of the Apes’) plays Sheriff Willoughby; cited by Mildred as the most culpable for the lack of justice. With Dixon as his Deputy and constant haranguing by Mildred, you may be forgiven for thinking that Willoughby has enough to contend with but no, things get worse. The film does not ask you to judge, it asks you to experience and feel; and it does this ingeniously through a twisted storyline that has more hairpin bends than Goodwood. The fact is, Dixon is funny; Willoughby is funny; and even the wronged Mildred is funny - and herein lies the genius of the film: Three Billboards manages to be thrilling, surprising, funny and tragic yet always entertaining – masterly filmmaking. Worth its weight in Oscars. Staying in Sussex next month, as we say: ‘Goodbye, Christopher Robin’. Idyllic, bucolic, revealing. Jon
To be clear - this is not a morality play. The moral core of the film is carried by Mildred who seeks justice, rather than revenge, whilst the townsfolk look on and judge Mildred and her conduct. Here there are no obviously good or bad guys. Instead there’s a collection of characters at once funny, violent and then tragic, moving through the story to unpredictable outcomes. As an audience we take sides, but do we take the right ones? It is a violent film in both language and actions. (The script is peppered with the ‘f’ word and there are a few ‘c’ bombs thrown in too.) It is also relentlessly funny, but it’s intelligent enough to make you question whether you should be laughing. Three Billboards is populated with three-dimensional characters: each has their own story, perspective, issues and flaws. Their lives intersect and collide as Mildred’s insistence on seeing justice done, reaches a critical level. Sam Rockwell (‘Moon’, Seven Psychopaths’) delivers a performance that won him an Oscar for Best Support as Dixon. Dixon is a deputy, he appears stupid, off the wall: just ‘out there’. Everything about him is funny, apart from his prejudice and penchant for violence against black suspects held in custody (allegedly).

The Grange Gallery Now that summer is here why not visit the Grange Gallery? Not only to look at the new exhibitions, but also to sample the delicious lunches and teas provided by the café in the Grange garden. May 31 - June 10. Rob Upward and Friends. In Rob’s own words, “As before, during my five oneman exhibitions at The Grange over the past 10 years, I will again be showing mainly my acrylic landscapes and figurative paintings. However, this year, I decided that at least two of my friends should have their chance and so, with no small persuasion, they are joining me in the exhibition which opens at The Grange on May 29th for two weeks. Jim Pearson produces wonderfully delicate landscapes in water colour, while Alan Rawlings, working in oils, creates vivid wild-life images. He also sculpts animals and birds. Peter Ind, world acclaimed jazz double bass player, writer and artist, will be showing his pastels which have a luminous, impressionist quality. Four artists, four media, four different themes.
The Gallery is open daily from Tuesday to Sunday; the opening hours are Tuesday to Saturday 10.30 – 16.00 and Sunday 14.00 to 16.00 Should you not yet be a member of the Rottingdean Preservation Society and would like to join us, please telephone 01273 301164 or email rpsmemsec@gmail.com.
June 12 – 24. Secrets and Stories Four artists come together with their art and stories: NICKHOLA-SUSANNE LA BROOY - recycling artist, writer & storyteller, SWAN BERLIN - connecting stories & secrets through art, NICK WARWICK - scrutinising an endlessly fascinating world through photography and ELIZABETH FOULDS. Carol Lawson ‘As the crows fly’
CAROL LAWSON, CHRIS McEWAN and NICHOLA CAMPBELL. A sense of mystery, of intrigue; atmospheric landscapes, hidden elements in apparently benign settings. Plus the wild imaginings from Chris McEwan’s sketchbooks…..

Lido Appeal The crowdfunder for to Save Saltdean Lido’s Building is still open. Thank you to those who have helped the volunteers to reach £80,000. If you haven’t got round to pledging then please do as the deadline is looming. The Heritage Lottery has set aside £4.19 million towards the restoration of the building. However, it has said that our community needs to contribute too. If we don’t reach a £104,000 target then the lottery money will go away forever and would see the building continue to be an eyesore that blights rather than benefits our community. The future of the pools will also be in doubt as they cannot survive without revenue from a heritage café, rooms for hire and events in a revamped building. Please pledge online at www.spacehive.com/saltdean-lido or send a cheque payable to Saltdean Lido Trust (Charity number 1173503) to Saltdean Lido Trust, Saltdean Lido, Park Road, Brighton BN2 8SP This is a promise to pay. If £104,000 is not reached then the lottery money will go away and the money won’t be drawn down. Please pledge online at www.spacehive.com/saltdean-lido or send a cheque payable to Saltdean Lido Trust (Charity number 1173503) to Saltdean Lido Trust, Saltdean Lido, Park Road, Brighton BN2 8SP We can do it if we all contribute. Please, please help restore the lido building to its former glory. Come on we can do it!

Myofascial Release Penny Koster, Holistic Pain Therapist Myofascial Release - the gentle release of connective tissue, I have a beautiful log cabin in my garden where I work from, it is an incredibly relaxing and gentle space. I have been a therapist for many years, I have a lot of different qualifications and training, but the therapy I am most passionate about and know first‐hand works completely is myofascial release, Myo‐fascial is the connective tissue which joins everything together, covers everything, fills all the gaps holds you together, it has the memory of your life, it relays messages to your brain faster than the nervous System, every single thing that happens to you in your life whether it be good or bad is stored in your subconscious and your fascial system, The fascia is like a giant web made up of collagen, elastin and ground substance it covers you from top to toe with no orifices unlike your skin, it moves constantly within your body, it penetrates, covers, protects every organ, muscle, ligament, tendon, bones everything- we are fascia, scar tissue is damaged fascia that has gone hard and dehydrated, that is why generally women get more lower back problems then men because they have hysterectomies, C-sections and end up with fascia that is damaged, dehydrated and hard (scar tissue) so no longer moves and consequently pulls on areas like the lower back, fascia can become hardened dehydrated and stop moving and therefore cause problems, discomfort, pain, disease for many many different reasons I generally call it life. Another example because we are one complete unit everything is connected you could have a pain in your shoulder and the
pain could possibly originate in your lower back, or maybe your neck or both. Myofascial release is being called the missing link and I passionately believe this to be true, I believe in the not too distant future everyone will be having these treatments, The cause of discomfort, pain is the collagen layer of the fascia, this is the layer that has to be released from its stuck, dehydrated, no longer moving position! An Analogy if you step on a hosepipe the flow is impaired. I am highly trained in myofascial release, I am trained to Body read to know where the problem is and then to un-stick it.. The whole world needs to know about this treatment! I feel very passionately that everyone should understand how it works, and as much as possible be able to do it to themselves and each other. There is no such thing as 'I have that pain because I'm getting old' No-one needs to have pain! Exceptions being if you break a leg or have an accident et cetera, I give these treatments which are extremely powerful but at the Same time very gentle, I also educate people so that they can self-care in the future and when they have a pain they understand why it's happening, and what they can do about it, ABSOLUTELY NO ONE HAS TO BE IN PAIN. Everyone is different sometimes it takes longer than others, IT IS WORTH THE WAIT! If you're interested in having a treatment and want to learn more about myofascial release and myself please go to: www.trigger-points.me.uk or phone me on 07951 117826
