Choir and Quiz Event Saturday May 11th at the Hillcrest Centre Doors open at 7pm - for 7.30pm, teams of up to six Tickets £5 per person to be bought in advance from the Hillcrest Centre Raffle, cash prize for the winners. Bring own drinks and nibbles. How the evening works is that the choir sings five songs and then there are general knowledge questions to do with the songs we have just sung. We repeat this format twice more. We shall be performing at least 15 during the evening. We are fund raising for the Hillcrest Centre because it needs to raise over £100,000 for improvements to the inside of the building.

Video Killed the Radio Star? No Ofcom did‌ With the demise of pirate radio in the 1960s the BBC had a monopoly on the radio waves. In 1975 local commercial radio reached the Portsmouth area with the arrival of Radio Victory. Staffed by a mixture of refugees from BBC, pirate stations and hospital radio, it was a shock to the system. A popular feature was singing the "hoots" - the breakfast DJ played "Hoots man" by Lord Rockinghams XI at 7.45 am. The caller of the day got to sceam "There's a moose loose about the hoose" down the telephone at the appropriate point. This single act of joyous silliness meant hundreds got to go on the radio. It made the station truly local - not a distant building in London. The station tried to appeal to everyone. It had a motorsport programme called Track Torque which featured James Hunt, Ron Dennis and Frank Williams during its run. A strangely addictive Pub Piano Request Show, where a grumpy pianist played listeners requests. Saturday Night Disco frequently boogied past it's 1am curfew to 3am.
replacement lacked the personality of its predecessor, ratings dropped, eventually it became Heart Hampshire. This pattern was repeated here as Southern Sound and Juice became Heart / Capital. Later this year OFCOM will allow both breakfast shows to be replaced by national shows. The drive time show would probably come from Fareham. The Brighton studios would close. Brighton has many local micro stations on DAB but their focus is too narrow. Express in Portsmouth proves a community station can have wide appeal, I just hope someone can be bring back true local radio. Otherwise local radio is dead......
New larger franchises were introduced and overnight the rebellious upstart was gone. The

Art Exhibition
Beautiful Newhaven We spend too much time walking past and ignoring the beautiful sites and landscapes of our towns and coasts is the message of Sussex artist, Tom Benjamin whose new series of work ‘Shore Lines’ is to be shown at St. Anne’s Galleries Lewes from 6 April to 5 May. Tom Benjamin paints outside, transporting his materials strapped to a bicycle and working ‘en plein air’ in all weathers. The paintings reveal the artist’s love of the constantly changing atmosphere, lights and hues of the sea and the memories and imagination that it evokes: “I am fascinated by the many ways land gives way to the sea, from the rich colours of a beach on a sunny day or an abandoned trawler rusting into the sea, to waves crashing against cliffs. Water has so many elements: it has form, it reflects, and we can see into it. The movement of the tides and waves mean that painting directly in front of it stretches all my abilities to the limit.” He says. “As I live in Sussex it has the coastline I know best. I am often drawn to slightly untidy locations. The gaps between the houseboats at Shoreham have wet mud, sea plants, decomposing boats, water and shadows cast by the gantries. At Newhaven I am drawn to boats that are getting rusty or seen through posts of jetties. Hope Gap and Cuckmere have a magical atmosphere and vast sense of space.”
Sussex residents are invited to see these works and celebrate the beauty of their locality at St. Anne’s, a landmark gallery in Lewes that represents Sussex artists. Tom Benjamin was born in Lewes where he lives and works. He trained at Brighton then Norwich School of Art, graduating in 1989. His work is held in private and corporate collections across the UK as well as in the US, Japan and Europe. Tom is also a widely respected teacher leading regular sell-out courses at the Paddock Studios, Lewes and locations in Sussex and Dorset.

Clifden House News
Walk Don’t Run #TeamClifdenHouse A new team has entered the local football scene. Residents from Clifden House Dementia Care Centre, Seaford, now have regular team to take part and enjoy ‘walking football’ at the Downs Leisure Club. Nial Joyce of Clifden House, said: “Our residents already really enjoy our regular bowling matches at the local Newhaven indoor bowling centre, so widening this to now also take part in walking football made perfect sense.” Walking football is different to regular football in many ways and is aimed at the over 50’s age group. It has very specific rules that outlaw all running and allows no contact between players. Over-head height restrictions and indirect free kicks ensure that the sport is played safely with full consideration to the participants’ age. Teams are either 5 or 6-a-side. As a result of these rules, games are played at a slower pace, often on artificial grass pitches, thus reducing the threat of pain, discomfort and injury, with players briskly walking through matches. This allows people who have loved the sport all their lives to once again safely get back to playing and also introduces the sport to people who perhaps have never considered playing before. Hydration & Nutrition Clifden House also took part in Hydration and Nutrition Week. This annual event highlights, promotes and celebrates improvements in the provision of nutrition and hydration. Raising awareness of the 10 key characteristics of good nutrition and hydration care along with giving people choice and control over their dietary needs has long been a priority at Clifden House. “We work as a team to ensure that our residents have the best possible nutritional care,” said Nial Joyce, of Clifden House Dementia Care Centre Clifden House ran themed days as part of the week including a Big Breakfast on Monday highlighting breakfast as the most important meal and a Smoothie Saturday. Niall Joyce of Clifden House said; “Smoothies are an excellent way of giving valuable nutrition from fruit and vegetables as well as rehydrating in an easily digestible form and are a firm favourite with our residents”. The highlight of the week was the Global Tea Party that showed a shared commitment among residents, relative and staff to nutritional care and the improvement of nutritional intake, but above all it brought everyone together to share joy and fun around the theme of nutritional wellbeing. www.clifdenhouse.co.uk
