What’s On

pg 9

This month we have an introduction to Newhaven Yoga on page 7. I did a six week beginners course in Yoga last year, it was very calming, and I found myself appreciating other people far more, so definitely worth looking into. The Sailhaven Project are back with an update on page 11, they are doing some fantastic work and offering people a wonderful opportunity to get involved in restoring a yacht and ultimately sailing in it. Also this month is a feature on Seahaven Wildlife Rescue, they are truly local charity and every penny donated to them goes directly to helping wildlife, see page 12 for this. They provided more lovely pictures of rescued animals which sadly we didn’t have room in the magazine for so keep an eye on our Facebook page for these. Please keep the articles coming in, if you have a local group or event you would like to promote we would love to hear from you. The magazine is also available online at our Facebook page, and appears there before it gets delivered to your door. Sam - Editor

Don’t Buy the Obvious‌ Sometimes digging deeper pays off Walk into a large retailer like Currys or John Lewis and you confronted with dozens of similar products. Look a bit closer and you may unravel some clever variations that even the sales staff are ignorant off. Flatbed microwave ovens: One of the main gripes about microwave ovens is that non-circular items have to fit within the circumference of the turntable. In standard microwaves the emitter is fixed to the side of the cavity and the food rotates past. With flatbed microwave ovens there is no turntable, the emitter rotates under the base of the microwave. Flatbed microwaves are particularly useful for oval or rectangular cookware. Smartphones with FM Radio: Budget mobiles usually come with a built in FM Radio, however, this feature is disabled on iPhones and high-end Android phones. Mid-range phones from Motorola and Sony offer a decent FM Radio. I chose the Motorola G5 + because my seat at Fratton Park gives me a superb view of one goal but a distant

view of the other, the local radio commentary fills in the gaps. Soundbases: As televisions have become slimmer than sound has suffered. A soundbar is a good solution but sometimes the TV has such a low stand that the soundbar speaker obscures the bottom of the screen. A soundbase looks like a plinth that the television stands on. Crammed into this box is stereo speakers, with downward firing bass speakers Freesat televisions: Most manufacturers have a couple of sets scattered across the ranges. Hook up to a Sky dish, and the built-in satellite receiver will pick up raft of free TV from satellite in conjunction with the conventional Freeview. Dig deeper, you might get a useful surprise......

Newhaven Yoga Ex-Army Nurses, Mike & Janet Bond have lived and worked in Newhaven throughout the past 37 years. Janet trained at the Adult Education Centre to become an Examination Typing and Keep Fit Teacher prior to becoming the Head of the Newhaven Centre. Mike was a popular Community Nurse for the Anti-Smoking Campaign. They are both committed to encourage individuals to reach their highest potential and they embrace the philosophy of: “Pass it On”. Early redundancy provided Janet the funding to train with London Central YMCA then start her own Fitness Business called “Energise Body-wise” which she successfully ran assisted by Mike from several local community halls throughout the following 15 years.

During this time they also designed and delivered 6 week “Commit to Get Fit” courses for all the Lewes District Leisure Centres before retiring from the Fitness World at the height of their success to dedicate their time and energy into their increasing passion for Yoga, “Teaching the Teachers for the British Wheel of Yoga” non-stop for the next 25 years. Having a strong interest in healing they are both Reiki Therapists and trained as Sound Healers (16years ago) with the College of Sound Healing. Now there is an increase in awareness via positive press articles plus research into the benefits of working with sound for a wide range of ailments Mike and Janet plan to offer therapeutic small group sessions in their beautiful purpose built Yoga Studio, as they continue to specialise in teaching Breath, Movement & Sound, (especially for those desiring to learn more about yoga than can possibly be delivered in a regular weekly class), as well as include the provision of a monthly “Sound Bath Therapy Session” which is a uniquely blissful and extremely beneficial deep relaxation experience. Spaces are limited so advance booking is recommended! Contact: Mike & Janet samtosha4u@btinternet.com (or) call: 01273 512306 To see Venue Google: www.samtosha4u.com

Local News

The Sailhaven Project This is an invitation to all local residents who have an interest in the marine world. Our very small team of volunteers is working hard towards restoring a donated 1961 Mahogany built Cheverton Cruisader, brought last November and currently at Lochin boatyard in Newhaven. Naima, once ready, will be moored in Newhaven and used as non-profit initiative to bring yacht sailing to the local youth, or simply take local residents to see the big blue world out there. We have made good progress. Paint stripping on the hull is almost complete but there is still lots of work to do. Would you like to get involved? No skills required just a few hours to spare. Are you a local company who would like to sponsor us and get your name on our sails? Please get in touch: sailhavenproject@gmail.com or visit our facebook page “Sailaven project and website www.sailhaven.org

Would you like to get your kids interested in the maritime world? We now have a partnership with Seahaven maritime academy (Steve on the right). Anyone under 18 can now receive a free tuition and learn about tides, currents, navigation etc (Subject to availability). Over 18 please also get in touch! Please visit https://seahavenmaritimeacademy.co.uk/ or call 01273 514050

Local Charity

Seahaven Wildlife Rescue Seahaven Wildlife Rescue is a small registered charity dedicated to the treatment and rehabilitation of British Wildlife, founded by Carrie and Jay in 2012. We rely on public donations as we currently don’t receive government funding or grants, none of our team pull a wage - even the founders!

Web: https://swr.org.uk/ Email: hello@swr.org.uk Phone: 0300 5610608

Our aims as a charity are as follows: We aim to rescue and rehabilitate British Wildlife in accordance to the Wildlife and Countryside act 1981, taking in sick and injured wildlife and coaxing them back to health with the aim of reintroducing them to the wild. If we cannot heal them, we ensure a quality of life and alleviate suffering. We do not discriminate against species and will rescue any wildlife we have the facilities to treat. Over the years we have helped an incredible range of animals, from the tiniest field mouse to the Roe Deer. Each casualty we get has its own treatment plan put together by our experienced founders and carried out with love and care. Whether it be hand-rearing, physio, a course of medication or, for the lucky ones, rest and recuperation. Our casualties come to us with all manor of illnesses and injuries. Some fall from nests, others survive predation, or have been victims of human activities. Poisoning, being caught in netting, shot with rifles, road traffic accidents, the list is endless. Thanks to our agreement with Coastway vets exotics teams, we’re able to successfully treat and release after most of these incidents. We’re still quite a small charity, but our goal for this year is to get a new residence so we can start expanding. We take in more than 400 casualties a year, and often cover way outside of our usual area due to a lack of facilities. With a proper hospital and rehabilitation centre, we’d be able to expand our team and evolve as a charity (Charity No. 1163126)

Clifden House News

Top Five Social Care Myths Exposed Of the people diagnosed with dementia in the UK, 17 per cent of them live here in the southeast. Dementia remains one of society’s biggest health challenges, yet confusion over what people’s rights are and how much they will have to pay remains prevalent. We asked local expert, Nial Joyce of Clifden House, Dementia Care Centre, to debunk the most common myths about social care and give us the plain unvarnished truth. 1. Myth: Social care is free in England Reality: Although health care is free at the point of use in England, social care is not, and never has been. Your first step is to ask your local authority for an assessment of your social care and support needs. The rules are as follows: If you have more than £23,250 in savings or assets (including your pension and property, if no one else lives there), you will usually have to pay the full cost for care home fees. If you have less than £23,250, or your spouse or another dependent still lives in your home, you may qualify for council-funded care. 2. Myth: I have to sell my home to pay for care Reality: Not necessarily. Social services can lend you the money to pay for your care charged against your property value. Known as a Deferred Payment Agreement, this is a form of government loan with the money repaid when the property is eventually sold. Alternatively, a property could be let or refinanced to provide for care fees. 3. Myth: If my partner needs care I will lose my home Reality: Only the partner requiring care should be means tested. Property occupied by a partner is disregarded and only fifty percent of any private pension should be taken into

account. The local authority will also only take into account fifty percent of any joint savings. 4. Myth: If I move into a care home independently and run out of money, I will have to leave Reality: Should your capital reduce to £23,250 you can seek local authority assistance. However, if the home you are in costs more than the local authority is willing to pay, you may need to find a source of top-up funding or move to less expensive accommodation, which may be detrimental to health. If you think you may run out of money you should arrange an assessment of your care needs with the local social services department in advance, to ensure they will step in to help. Also check if the care home can continue to accommodate you at social services funding rates or will require a third party top-up. 5. Myth: I have dementia so I will be eligible for NHS continuing healthcare Reality: NHS continuing healthcare (also known as NHS continuing care) is a package of care arranged and funded by the NHS. It’s awarded depending on whether a person's primary need is a health need. It can be provided in a range of settings, including residential or nursing care or someone's own home. Applying for NHS continuing healthcare is not an easy process. Eligibility is based on an individual’s healthcare need, not a specific diagnosis, and a person with dementia may not necessarily be eligible for NHS Continuing Healthcare. For more details see www.nhs.uk About Clifden House Dementia Care Centre: Established 40 years ago, Clifden House Dementia Care Centre in Seaford specialises in providing residential and respite dementia care. It enables the individual to lead an active lifestyle with privacy, dignity and security. It also leads they way in managing overmedication, allowing the individual to live as full a life as possible. www.clifdenhouse.co.uk
