A big thank you to the helpful ladies at The Patchwork Cat for their help in finding material and thread for a sewing project I’m about to do, I had no idea the shop was there until I stumbled across it by accident, they have a nice little cafe there too so it is well worth a visit. It was also good to know that I was able to park for an hour without having to worry about paying for it, I’m sure this initiative is having a positive effect on the town. In this edition we have a feature on Newhaven Tennis Club, as you will find out they have been around for a very long time, but sometimes people are still surprised to find a tennis club on their doorstep. I’ve been back to visit Michelle at Holistic Treats, this time for a back massage, you can find out how I got on by going to page 7. Sam - Editor

South Downs National Park ... destroying our towns In 2011 the South Downs National Park (SDNP) was launched. To control development responsibility for planning permission passed from the local councils to SDNP. Locally, Telscombe Cliffs, Peacehaven, Newhaven and Seaford are outside the National Park (NP). While Telscombe Tye, Telscombe Village, Piddinghoe and Lewes are in the SDNP. This all may seem academic but Lewes District Council has a legal obligation to ensure there are sufficient new homes built in their area. LDC only has the coastal strip under its planning control. Plans for Newhaven keep stalling, so in the short term Peacehaven is taking the brunt. The local infrastructure is reaching breaking point. So LDC still allows
another 450 homes to built over a couple of years. So how many homes will SDNP contribute... SDNP has a different agenda, it’s focus is on gradual development. The South Downs Local Plan dictates what can be built in its area between 2014 and 2033. The target for LDC is 4,150 dwellings between 2010 and 2030 with SDNP only contributing 912. Something has to give or tower blocks will be the only way to squeeze in the extra people.....Meanwhile in Midhurst SDNP sip their herbal tea and congratulate themselves on how they have protected the South of England from overcrowding. Whoever thought this was a good idea......

Local Therapist Review
A Return Visit to Holistic Treats Regular readers will remember that I went for a Reflexology session with Michelle Rees of Holistic Treats back in November, last month I went back to try out her Swedish back massage… There are several reasons to try massage, be it for a specific area you want to have worked on after injury, or simply because you live a hectic lifestyle and need some time to yourself for a bit of de-stressing. Alternately it makes a fantastic gift for that slightly awkward relative or friend who just doesn’t want to give you any other ideas! Massage can be very light, or deep tissue depending on what you need at the time. Michelle discusses your requirements before she gets started, in my case I was going to a Pilates class later in the day so she suggested using a medium pressure to avoid any possibility for injury. I was surprised that Michelle started and finished with my feet, but this makes sense when you think back to reflexology where your feet provide a mirror image to the rest of your body. Once she got started on my back Michelle worked my muscles gently releasing the knots she found there, particularly in my left shoulder where they were almost audible as they were eased. After half
an hour that passed in no time at all Michelle left the room so I could get my top back on, I felt very relaxed particularly my neck, shoulders and back. Michelle uses a light grape seed oil for massage, and all her towels are laundered using unscented soap, all of which are part of her methodical approach to ensuring there are no skin allergens present, additionally it means that you can really enjoy the smell of natural oils if you are visiting for aromatherapy massage. A half hour Swedish or Aromatherapy massage is £17, or £27 for one hour. Once again I give Holistic Treats a solid recommendation and will be thinking of an excuse to go back and try one of Michelle’s other treatments in the near future.
10% off bookings made during May and June 2019 when quoting ‘Newhaven Magazine’ see Main Holistic Treats ad below for contact details and a list of available treatments.

Haven Harmonies A choir member’s perspective… It’s Monday, a fairly ordinary day usually, but not so for the members of Haven Harmonies. Monday night at the Hillcrest means Choir night, you may be feeling a bit tired when you arrive but after a ‘good old singsong’ I feel sure you will be feeling quite perky again! I joined the Choir from the very first day it started at the Hillcrest Centre and I’m still here as we enter our 9th year. It says everything you need to know of how I feel about music. Let’s face it, it would be a very colourless world without all the joy that music gives us. It’s also been a great opportunity to make new friends. Rosie Brown, our Choir Leader is now in her third year with us and during this time has introduced us to lots of new singing experiences, including several songs in different languages. We all share the same passion, using our voice to make music with others. Over the last 8 years I have gained more confidence in performing in front of people and found so much fun in sharing my interest with other like minded people. If you sing in the car when the radio is on, or even in the shower when no one’s listening, maybe you’d like to join us. You don’t need to read music
and you don’t need to audition. You can try it out with a free taster session so there’s nothing to lose. If you like it and want to come again it is £6 a week thereafter. We can be found at The Hillcrest Centre – Monday evenings 7-9 pm. Our email address is: havenharmoniescommunitychoir@gmail.com or just come along, you will be most welcome. Vicki Haven Harmonies

Newhaven Tennis Club Newhaven Tennis Club was formed way back in 1936 where members then played on grass courts in Fort Road Recreational Ground. The Club now has use of three courts in Court Farm Road with a membership in excess of 80 people. Half of this number are youngsters, aged from 5 to 17: Back in 1936, a potential member had to be 15 years of age before they were allowed to join the Club. Coaching for club members has been an important feature for many years with the Club, none more so now as we have two LTA coaches providing group and individual lessons for junior and adult members. Non-members, wishing to give tennis a try, are warmly welcomed at the group coaching classes for a small additional fee, giving them a chance to see if they like it. ‘Try Tennis for Free’ Open Days are normally held in June; all ages are welcome with equipment provided along with advice on Membership. Families who are also welcome to these events, can borrow balls and rackets and have some energetic fun on the courts, have free coaching or join in with the organised games with our Coaches and other members. Our Adult membership are catered for with several Club Sessions held weekly, Tournaments and special fun events also held throughout the year; All our members can use the courts at free times, where they can book a court online allowing them to play other members. Members can bring a Guest to play, but a visitor’s fee will then need to be paid. Contact details: Bob - 01273 512162
Facts & Figures We have players as young as 4 to adults in their 70’s The club has balls and racquets specially designed for young children to use, this means that parents don’t have to bear the expense of buying these initially The longest serving (no pun intended) continuous member joined around 62 years ago and is still playing doubles today! The club complies with all Lawn Tennis Association regulations, having LTA trained coaches, as well as a Club Welfare Officer who has been trained in all safeguarding matters.

Blue Plaque to Honour Local Ladies & Football Fever… Two local Seaford ladies, Laura Giles and Shirley Penry, have been honoured with a commemorative ‘blue plaque’. The plaque was erected to officially recognise the dedication and commitment of these two special laundry ladies at the opening of the newly modernized laundry at Clifden House Dementia Care Centre in Seaford. Nial Joyce of Clifden House, said: “Laura and Shirley are dedicated, hard working ladies. They have been with us for many years and we all want to show our great appreciation for their hard work that always takes place ‘behind the scenes’ of our busy community at Clifden House. We thought the best way to honour them into the future was a blue plaque, for the celebrities they are!” Laura joined Clifden House in 2009, Shirley has also been working at Clifden House for nine years. Both are from Seaford. Shirley and Laura said they are thrilled with the blue plaque and delighted with the new laundry facilities at Clifden House too. Football Fever Following Clifden House’s team of residents taking part in ‘walking football’ at the Down’s Leisure Club, a further number of residents are off to The Albion. These football fanatics will watch the Seagulls take on Bournemouth this month. Deena, activities coordinator at Clifden House, said: “This ties in perfectly with our newly formed Walking Football team - who are becoming regular players at the local indoor football centre. Everyone at Clifden House is now in the football mood and we’re really looking forward to seeing the professionals in action at the Brighton & Hove Albion home ground. We’ve our fingers crossed for a home win!” It’s not all physical action at Clifden House Dementia Care Centre, two residents, Verna and Warwick, are planning on delivering a living history talk to local pupils in Seaford this month too. Clifden House is a family-run dementia care centre established on the Sussex coast in Seaford over 45 years ago. It has developed into a leader in specialist dementia care, providing a vibrant and active environment. www.clifdenhouse.co.uk T: 01323 896460 To advertise call 01273 586527 or email info@newhavenmagazine.co.uk
