Welcome Page

Welcome to the June edition! The Front cover page has been very kindly supplied by Colette Langton of Colette Langton Photography. Nice and bright to reflect the lovely weather we have thankfully been experiencing.

Contents

We are back up and running with a printed version. Our advertisers are either making preparations or are able to supply a service to you. Please remember we are all trying to get used to new working conditions and we have to sensible about how this can all be achieved. So please talk to the person you are employing if you have any concerns, it will take time and a little practice. With this in mind I have typed up some Government guidelines for tradesmen working in peoples homes on page 27. Please read them and work with the tradesmen to ensure everyone stays safe.

P26 Local News

I feel a mixture of fear and frustration at the moment with various sections of our community and urge you to remain kind. I think this is a key word for this time. This type of crisis affects people in many different ways and often a calm communication with someone is all they need to bring a bit of sanity back.

P44 Puzzle Page

I am also very glad that as a community we have all done our bit to help each other. The Covid 19 Mutual Aid team have been working very hard to make sure that anyone sheltering has the basic necessities and they are continuing to work hard; as are Kempton House, Seahaven Food Bank, Kempton House and CTLA. I am sure there are others but these are the ones I have been picking up on. Our local food outlets and Supermarkets have provided a great service as have some of our independent farm suppliers in the area, working tirelessly to make sure we all have good food to eat. I hope next month I will have other news to report; and that we manage to ease out of this so that things can start to move again and parents feel safe to send their children to school again. I like many of you look forward to seeing other members of my family again, especially my son. Stay safe and look out for each other. Anne (Editor)

ean Views Where are we now? ....time for the Crystal Ball Writing this in mid-May it is difficult to predict the following month or so, when at times Government policy seems to be written by Larry (the Downing Street cat). At the moment, it looks as though Electronics shops will stay closed until early July. Computer call outs and sales seem slated for July.

At the time of writing, I am not allowed to visit customers but I can get laptops, PCs, monitors etc shipped to their doorstep. Currently BT Openreach, who supply most people’s internet service, will not enter customers houses. If you have a fault outside the property or at the exchange it will be fixed; otherwise bad luck….. We all await Larry’s next decision…….

There is sparse availability of the cheaper laptops and PCs. The warehouses were cleared out in March when companies scrambled to source equipment for employees to work from home. With the supplying factories in Asia shut down the shelves remained bare. In April the factories reopened, there is a slow trickle of fresh stock coming through to the UK. I am lucky because one of my main suppliers is German, they have recovered quicker and have the majority of their range available.

The going may be tough … but the tough keep going

By Pitchside View

WE are all currently living through the most difficult time with everyone having to deal with this unprecedented situation as best they can. With draconian limitations and lifestyle changes affecting everything we all do, those of you who have football in your heart will be yearning for a time when everything can get back to normal and football comes back at all levels. Of course, nobody knows when that might be but Peacehaven & Telscombe FC is determined to be there and be ready for business as soon as the green light is switched back on. During this lockdown period the club’s income has dried up to a trickle, and although the club has slashed its outgoings there are still some regular bills which have to be paid. This is where you come in. If you can and are able to, the club would like you to get behind it even more during these troubled times. In order for the football club to press the relaunch button when the time comes, it needs to continue to generate funds and below we give you several ways you can help. Purchase a number (or even buy an additional number) in the 200 Club. The 200 Club has plenty of room to grow. Currently there are around 70 members and the club currently pays out £100 per month in prizes. The 200 Club currently makes around £200 per month profit for the football club. The more people who participate the greater the prize fund and the more money the football club makes.

Buy new Peacehaven & Telscombe FC gear for all the family There’s a wide range of branded club gear available for adults and youngsters. Including replica shirts, training tops, T shirts, beanies and scarves. And everything you buy, the football club receives commission. Purchase Lewes District Council lotto tickets Peacehaven & Telscombe FC benefits from the Lewes District Council’s lottery. Tickets are just £1 per week with a chance of winning £25,000. By signing up, you can choose which local good cause will receive 50p of your weekly ticket cost, and of course Peacehaven & Telscombe FC is one of the good causes you can choose to donate to. Branded goalkeeper’s gloves Peacehaven & Telscombe player Charlie Lambert has donated his whole supply of branded Peacehaven & Telscombe goalkeepers’ gloves to the club. Each pair costs £25 and they come in adults and youth sizes. Make free money for your club Easyfundraising is a simple way to generate money for good causes. Whenever you shop online, go first to the Easyfundraising site and a percentage of what you spend will be donated to the football club. You have to register first, but this is very straightforward. Make a cash donation to the football club

It costs just £5 per month and the easiest way to get involved is to set up a monthly direct debit.

And of course if you would like to make a donation to the football club, anything you can donate will be very much appreciated. Please send your donation to: Peacehaven & Telscombe FC, Barclays Bank. A/C number: 00708089. Sort code: 20-49-76.

Membership – you are the club

Peacehavencovidmutualaid.uk The Havens Community Hub CIC has welcomed a new Director to their board. Recognised in the Queens New Year Honours list in 2016 with a British Empire Medal for her dedication to community work for over 40 years, Marilyn Nolan works with a variety of local charities and groups across the Havens area including the Seaford Musical Theatre (Barn Theatre), Meridian Mature Citizens Forum and the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB). Raising tens of thousands of pounds for local charities by hard work and dedication, Marilyn is also known for her baking, having won the Peacehaven annual show title for the last ten years. Fellow Hub Director, Michaela Twaits, said "having known Marilyn for over twenty years, I'm delighted she has made time to support our work in the community. We are currently working remotely and quickly changing our provision to meet whatever needs come our way - for example, working with Fareshare to redistribute food and prevent waste and landfill, because other groups are having to close temporarily." The Havens Community Hub is a not-for-profit local support organisation supporting local charities, forming projects to meet local needs and offering volunteer opportunities. Working safely in peoples homes Here are some of the guidelines set out by the government with regards to who can work and how to work in peoples homes. Please make sure you understand these and feel free to turn away anyone that is not working towards these standards…

This was some advice taken from the HMRC website as to who is allowed to work currently: Work carried out in people’s homes - for example by tradespeople carrying out repairs and maintenance, cleaners, or those providing paid-for childcare in a child’s home - can continue, provided that the worker has no coronavirus symptoms. Again, it will be important to ensure that government guidelines are followed to ensure everyone’s safety. These include practicing excellent hand and respiratory hygiene, and maintaining a two metre distance from household occupants as far as possible. No work should be carried out in any household which is isolating because one or more family members has symptoms or where an individual has been advised to shield - unless it is to remedy a direct risk to the safety of the household, such as emergency plumbing or repairs, or to provide emergency childcare in a child’s home if a young child would be left unattended and where the worker is willing to do so. In such cases, Public Health England can provide advice to those working in other people’s houses and households. No work should be carried out by a tradesperson, cleaner or nanny who has coronavirus symptoms, however mild, or where someone in their household has symptoms. This next list is from the HM Government booklet on ‘Working Safely During Covid 19 Other Peoples Homes guidelines’. Please if there is any advertiser who does not actively work towards these standards or change their operating basis when it is pointed out must be asked to leave. ● Discussing with households ahead of a visit to ask that a 2 m distance is kept from those working, if possible. ● Asking that households leave all internal doors open to minimise contact with door handles. ● Identifying busy areas across the household where people travel to, from or through, for example, stairs and corridors and minimising movement within these areas. ● Bringing your own food and drink to households and having breaks outside where possible. ● Limiting the number of workers within a confined space to maintain social distancing. ● Using a fixed pairing system if people have to work in close proximity. For example, during twoperson assembly or maintenance. ● Allocating the same workers to a household where jobs are repetitive. Employers and agencies should introduce fixed paring to have the same individuals allocated to a household where jobs are repetitive in nature. Please keep these guidelines in mind and hopefully we can go forward as a Community safely and beat this virus. More information can be found on the government website please visit for more information: www.gov.uk/government/publications/guidance-to-employers-and-businesses-about-covid-19

These guidelines were up-to-date at the time of publishing but maybe subject to change!

Local Information

Support Seahaven Food bank Seahaven Foodbank, also known as Newhaven Food bank, provides food parcels to families and individuals in Newhaven, Sussex and the surrounding areas. The Food Bank still need our help as the fall off in food donations caused by the Covid-19 crisis and the jump in demand for the service has meant that they have had to start buying food and other essential products. This together with the need to move to a delivery model and the widening of the geographical area served, has increased our costs significantly. A food parcel for an individual for one week costs £14 or £18 with toiletries. All donations will go directly to purchasing items for food parcels. See www.sussexcommunityorg.uk for more information. If you cannot afford food, you may be eligible for help from your local food bank: You will need a ‘food bank voucher’ to use the service. These vouchers are issued by agencies that are able to assess people’s circumstances and need for support. They include Citizens Advice, Housing Support Officers, Children’s Centres, Health Visitors, Social Services and some local charities.

Article (Aether Bios Clinic) Bridgeford’s Best Bites: Osteopathy Tips -

DESK WARRIORS POSTURAL HELP Working from home has many benefits, like saving on travel time and costs, sleeping in a little later rather than getting the early morning commute, being in your own space with your own coffee, filtered water, etc. One of the potential challenges is to create a good working setup to keep your posture in good shape. The Chair Basically, desk warriors need to take care of how they are sitting and particularly at a computer. The best household chair to use is a dining or kitchen chair with a straight back; ultimately an adjustable, fit for purpose office chair is preferable.

There is research currently about the function of the vagus nerve and how it is a two-way communication between the organs and areas in the brain and how it is essential in our ability to feel relaxed and calm. This is partly why a good neck in ‘neutral’ posture is so important to our health.

The right angle - At 90! The most beneficial posture is all about the right angle – 90 degrees! Sit with your bottom at the back of the chair and have your back supported by the chair back, so that the angle between your back and your upper legs is 90 degrees. Your knees also need to be at a 90-degree angle with freedom between the back of your knees and the seat of the chair; your feet should be flat on the floor. To keep a good alignment in your spine, the shoulders need to be above the hips and the top of your head above your coccyx. Chest lifted slightly and shoulders relaxed away from the ears. The elbows need to be at 90 degrees with the wrists relaxed on the keyboard, and the neck in a ‘neutral’ position. If you have a ‘lordosis’ or naturally exaggerated curve in your lower back then you may benefit from a rolled-up towel or a cushion to support that curve, while still keeping the rest of the posture at 90!

Computers, keyboards, and screens A laptop is not really designed for a day’s work, it is for the occasional bit of work on our lap or on the go! The cheapest way to create good ergonomics with a laptop is to buy a separate keyboard to plug in – its way better for your hand and wrist position than the laptop keyboard. The laptop then needs to be raised to a place where you can have your neck in a good ‘neutral’ position and maintain a good natural spinal curve. You can use books or a sturdy box, just be sure that there is ventilation where needed so the laptop does not overheat.

Neck in ‘neutral’ It is important to keep the top of the neck, where it joins the head in what I call a good ‘neutral’ position. If the rest of your posture is well aligned as described in at 90, the space just below the base of the skull should feel soft when your neck is in neutral. To find ‘neutral’ place your hands either side of the spine just below the base of the skull; if you lift your head up or down it will feel tight, when you find the neutral position, the soft tissue at this place will feel soft and relaxed.

Movement We are mostly fluid in our bodies and life is about movement, so sitting stiffly is not encouraged – even sitting stiffly in a good posture! Occasionally have a little wiggle or a sway to make sure your have some space for your body to breath and move naturally. It is easy to create tension when we concentrate and a little focus towards avoiding this goes a long way. Correct stretching is vitally important too. We are happy to advise you on your health matters. I currently offer a zoom Home/Worker’s Posture Treat ½ hour on Tuesdays at 8:30 am and Thursdays at 1:00 pm if you would like to join me for some light relief. The first 7 minutes of my Chair Yoga video is dedicated to desk warriors. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K14vWPF5JAs&t=11s

There is a space between the occiput (back of the head at the base of the skull) and the temporal bones (that include the ear canal) called the jugular foramen. The internal jugular vein passes through this jugular foramen and carries 90% of the venous blood that drains from the head; additionally 3 cranial nerves, the glossopharyngeal, related to swallowing, the spinal accessory that supplies the neck and spinal muscles and the vagus nerve, the longest nerve in the body that feeds the digestion and relates to breathing.
