Covered shopping area and small town houses preferred in survey response to Peacehaven centre Masterplan
P34
General information
P35
Newhaven Twinning Association News
16 Feb 2021 A covered shopping area and small town houses were selected as preferences in response to the Peacehaven town centre Masterplan survey. Other preferences included agreement with the proposed new pedestrian streets and squares and backing for a business or enterprise centre. Least favourite options selected included sheltered housing and pubs and bars. 844 responses were received in total which will be used to develop policies and as supporting evidence for the emerging Neighbourhood Plan. Cathy Gallagher chair of the Peacehaven and Telscombe Neighbourhood Development Plan (NDP) Steering Group said, "Although a slightly higher percentage disagreed with the Masterplan overall, this gives us a fantastic idea of what people do want for their new town centre. We will now be busy feeding back these results to residents and other interested parties, drafting the Neighbourhood Plan and consulting on design codes for new developments." For more information about the Neighbourhood Development Plan (NDP) Steering Group see the website, Facebook and Twitter.

ean Views Terra Tales ....importing from Germany Since the beginning of the year the media has obsessed with the effects of Brexit on fishing in Northern Ireland. I thought some of you might be interested in my experience of importing from Germany. I chose Terra as they are a computer manufacturer and Germanys biggest distributor (they stock a huge range of components from all the major brands) with over 600 staff. As long as I built four days for delivery into my quotes, their location was irrelevant. By comparison, none of the major UK wholesalers would accept me as a sole trader. My major concern was that Terra might abandon the UK if Brexit proved to troublesome for them. I was assured that they had a very experienced logistics department who had three major plans ready to go, dependant on the final outcome. The UK deliveries are prepared in a new despatch area with a dedicated team who ensure all the correct paperwork is submitted. A new entrance, gate and service road was built so UK collections would remain separate and not mixed with other parcels.

By Bruce Cameron-Stuart
As a precaution they had moved their UK HQ to premises with warehousing space in case they needed to hold local stock, to speed up deliveries (previously everything was direct from Hüllhorst). In early January it became clear their main courier was not as Brexit ready as it claimed. With UPS in complete chaos Terra responded quickly, after a frank and firm conversation, they cancelled ALL worldwide UPS. A bulk consignment of stock was shipped to the UK HQ so it could be shipped locally, other stock is shipped by DHL Express (overnight by air at no extra charge). Terra Warranty repairs are unaffected because they have always been carried out in the UK. As I personally hold a stock of laptops, PCs and components as a buffer, the effects of Brexit are invisible to my customers. German efficiency saved the day….

We also meet every Sunday morning (weather permitting) at 10:30 am for socially distanced Petanque. We meet at the Boules court opposite the Hope Inn by the riverside. It's free, but to keep safe you will need your own set of boules and can only play with members of your household or support bubble. Community asked to ‘March for Martlets’ Make a difference and get moving for hospice care – Martlets is asking people in the community to connect with hospice care and get moving during the month of March with their fundraising activity ‘March for Martlets’. The charity is encouraging everyone – young and old – to take a step in the right direction to raise money for their local hospice. Martlets has kept caring day and night for over 2,200 patients with lifelimiting illnesses and supporting their loved ones across the community during the Covid-19 pandemic. March for Martlets will be the charity’s first event of 2021 and due to Covid restrictions, people are encouraged to sign up and pledge to raise sponsorship for their own personal walking, running or marching target. Martlets cares for local people across an area of 34 square miles of Sussex, taking in Brighton and Hove, from Portslade in the West to Newhaven in the East. The charity is hoping people will be inspired by that distance, so whether it’s a 3.4 km walk per day, 34 times up and down the stairs every morning or 34 miles in total, everyone can make a difference - sign up at www.martlets.org.uk/take-part Over the past 12 months, Martlets’ charity shops have had to close during lockdown and all fundraising events have been cancelled - while the need for hospice care and support is greater than ever. Since the beginning of the pandemic, Martlets has seen a 25% rise in calls to its phone hub, which offers expert advice and support to patients, families, carers and other professionals 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. see the on-line magazine at www.peacehavendirectory.co.uk or
During April to September 2020, Martlets’ phone hub handled 7,456 calls from community patients and their families, and 7,891 from healthcare professionals. In many cases, crisis callers were only one call away from ringing 999. Martlets supports people, living with a terminal illness, across the city and beyond. These people need pain management, symptom relief, emotional support and mobility care. Due to the impact of COVID-19 and social distancing measures, many people with a terminal illness are having to cope with long periods of isolation. They may also have decided not to go to hospital for treatment or visit their GP as often. This means the team at Martlets are working harder than ever to reach and support many more people with complex needs. Martlets is hoping that it can encourage people to remember its hard-working doctors, nurses and wider healthcare teams, and show their support by virtually walking alongside them. Signing up to March for Martlets to raise a donation, no matter how large or small, will help Martlets to keep caring. www.martlets.org.uk

Dan’s a national award winner DAN WESTON is the inaugural monthly winner of the Nationwide Mutual Respect award. The award, part of The Football Association's Respect Campaign, aims to help make grassroots football more respectful and positive. This brand-new award recognises outstanding contributions, achievements and behaviour in grassroots football across the country by young players under 18, coaches, teams, parents and referees. Dan, 36, a junior football coach for Peacehaven and Telscombe FC, said: "It is an absolute thrill to win this Nationwide Mutual Respect Award and I will share it with all the people at our football club." “I believe community football clubs have never been more important to bring people together and help each other through these challenging times." Chris Hull, Ambassador for Nationwide’s Mutual Respect Award, said: "Nominations for Dan were absolutely glowing. He has been coaching the children in his team from a young age and has one hundred percent commitment to their football development as well as their wellbeing and social skills."
By Pitchside View
"What also impressed the panel greatly is that Dan goes above and beyond the call of duty for his community. He also runs the ‘Peacehaven boot locker’ where he collects second hand football boots and equipment, to enable struggling families to access items they aren’t able to buy brand new." “Dan also volunteers for the football club including helping the local 'feed our children and families’ initiative.” “He is a tremendous example of the power of mutual respect for each other in our communities plus how important and central a thriving local football club can be to the people in its area.” Club chair Sue Norwood said: "We are all so proud of Dan and he is so worthy of winning this award. He goes above and beyond and has the club at his heart. The children love him, he is amazing." As well as a trophy, Dan also wins tickets to an upcoming England game, once fans are allowed back into stadiums. For more information about Peacehaven & Telscombe FC go to www.peacehavenfootball.com on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Picture Left: Dan Weston with the Mutual Respect 2021 award
"During the lockdowns he has done all training via Zoom. "He awards a player a week for ‘Zoom trainer of the week’ and leaves a trophy on their doorstep.”
Volunteer car driver charity, Havens Community Cars, has reached three milestones this week Taking on their 25 Volunteer Driver and welcoming their 200 member, the charity was also delighted to receive an anonymous £500 donation to their 'Fuel Injection' fundraising campaign, taking them smashing through their initial £1000 target. Launched in 2020 to meet an unmet community need for journeys, the charity has seen demand for their services dramatically increase to support the coronavirus vaccination programme. The charity has launched an appeal called 'Fuel Injection'. Inspired by the Brighton based 'Cabs 4 Jabs' campaign, the appeal will part-fund taxi journeys for people (unable to use public transport) when the Havens Community Cars volunteer drivers are fully booked.
The only other Community Transport organisation in the District offering transport support, is the CTLA. We are now attempting to fit in as many clients as we can with our amazing volunteer car drivers." Details of the 'Fuel Injection' fundraising campaign can be found at: https://localgiving.org/appeal/fuelinjection/ Volunteer drivers receive full training, PPE equipment and fuel expenses and new driver enquiries are always welcome. Email havenscommcar@gmail.com or call 01273 918226.
Chair of Trustees, Paula Woolven, said "the demand for our services skyrocketed in January when the first injections were given to those over 80 - many of whom did not have the mobility to use public transport and who had no other options to get to the centres in Brighton or Eastbourne.

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR BIKE AND KEEP IT WORKING IN THE WINTER WEATHER You will ideally need; Cleaning fluid, water source, cleaning cloth, oil rag, drying cloth, brushes oil/degreaser. So, you’ve been out for an epic bike ride and been a hero riding in the harsh British weather. You’ve got your medals, a sense of achievement and are feeling very happy. However your trusty and very beautiful stead now looks like it’s been lying at the bottom of a swamp for the last 2 years. You could just stick it back in the garage, shed, bedroom or wherever you keep it. If you do this your bike will be ok in the short term but after a while the gears (if you have gears on your bike) and haven’t got a single speed rig (best for the winter weather) will begin to stop working properly and then not at all. Your brakes will fail and depending what wheel, pedal and headset bearings you have they will likely start to seize, all due to mud and other materials getting in all the parts and clogging them up. If you have front/rear suspension then the stanchions will likely get scratched allowing corrosion and create gaps in the seals leading to poor function and eventually a need to replace very expensive! Step 1: Clean the drive-chain. You could use an old tooth brush and degreaser but whatever brush you use on your drive-chain don’t use it on any other part of the bike. This is to ensure you don’t cover your bike in oil/degreaser and to particularly avoid contaminating brakes/brake surfaces with oil - not a good combo. You know you have completed this stage when your chain, rear/front mech is free from crud and moving freely. Step 2: Rinse the bike down with a garden hose or bucket of water and cloth. Not a jet washer as this can damage bearings by penetrating seals and causing rust build up then failure. The rinsing will get rid of a lot of the dirt and loosen anything that’s left.
Step 3: Cleaning fluid for proper cleaning. If you’re in love with your bike and want to wear it like a piece of jewellery, then ‘Muc off’ bike cleaning fluid is very good at combating dirt and bringing your bike back to shiny new. Just spray on, leave for a bit, then wipe over with a cloth. If your not so bothered then washing up liquid of some sort in a bucket of water (warm) and wipe over until all the dirt is off.
Step 4: Rinse off. If dirt still remains, repeat step 3 and 4 until clean enough. Step 5: Dry. With a drying cloth - chamois if your fancy and if not anything that absorbs water and isn’t abrasive. Step6: Protect. If you're cool enough to own an Ellsworth, then your frame’s Teflon coated and the dirt slides off. If not you can (whilst avoiding brake surfaces) go over metal parts with silicone spray which will protect your frame, make it hard for dirt to stick to it next ride and make it look real pretty. Step 7: Lube. (No, oil) Make sure your drive chain is dry (if not use an old clean rag to dry it) then make sure every part of your chain is lubricated with appropriate bicycle oil, like GT85. For those with Single speeds just clean and lubricate your chain and feel smug that it only takes you 5 minutes to prepare your bike for the next ride. Chris Hollis www.cycleseahaven.org.uk

(Aether Bios Clinic) Bridgeford’s Best Bites Osteopathy tips - BALANCING THE BODY WITH BREATHING (PRANAYAMA) Pranayama means ‘to stretch the breath’. It is prudent to advance gradually in any form of stretching that we do with the physical body. When stretching the physical body the ligaments act as elastic tissue and have a great capacity to stretch, provided the extent of flexibility is approached and accommodated gradually by the entire organism. At the same time, the muscle tissue needs to be strong enough to provide adequate support for the increased flexibility, maintaining a healthy balance. If ligaments are stretched too rapidly beyond their limit injury results, ranging from tearing of a few fibres to a complete ligamentous tear, requiring an extended recovery period. When stretching the breath, it seems logical that the same caution should be applied with the same aim of maintaining balance in the system as a whole. In the physical mechanics of breathing, we are moving many body tissues as we take air into the lungs. The lungs themselves, the pleural lining around the lungs and between the fissures, the fascial tissue between the lungs and all surrounding organs and structures – heart, oesophagus, diaphragm, ribs, sternum, spine – particularly the cervical spine from which the lungs are suspended. Not forgetting that all the nerves and blood vessels are housed in this elastic fascial tissue that surrounds just about every structure in the body. Also the structures affected by these adjacent structures, in particular all the abdominal organs that are affected by the diaphragm as it moves with the breath. Injury patterns and restrictions in any of these structures can become more apparent when the breath is stretched further than accustomed. A restricted rib or cervical vertebra, e.g., may start to move more freely in response to gently expanding the breath. Gradually, with careful expansion of the breath, deeper tensions may start to release. When deep fascial tissue tensions in and between organs are released therapeutically, they can release deep tensions that may have been held in the body for a long period of time, without the person being consciously aware of them. This requires a deep adjustment within the whole system to regain an equilibrium that is ultimately beneficial though perhaps at
first a little disorientating. I feel that a similar release can be gained with careful Pranayama. If the stretch of the breath and the tissues is gradual, the body can easily accommodate the micro changes whilst maintaining equilibrium. Imagine the effect of tension in the pleural tissue. Suppose that this tension pulls through to the diaphragm, affecting the breathing generally and the entire abdominal system via the restricted diaphragmatic movement. It may also pull through to the psoas muscle affecting the kidneys, which normally travel 600 metres along the psoas every day. The tension in the psoas muscle may pull unevenly on the hip and the lumbar spine affecting the nerve distribution to surrounding muscles and organs. The body considers organs and blood vessels to be more important than joints for survival, so it is happy for the person to have an adapted posture creating tension in a joint in order to make space to minimise or avoid any effective tension in an organ. Imagine now that the breath is suddenly stretched, releasing all the tension in the pleural tissue. The dynamics of the forces held throughout the body to help compensate for this tension are now no longer required. Suddenly, the accommodation and adaption around the stresses on the diaphragm, kidneys, lumbar spine, hip and perhaps reflex nerve responses all need to change, yet the change is far too great for the body to accommodate, resulting in imbalance. I feel the principal is similar to overstretching a ligament by excessive physical stretching, just that the physical stretching is this time accomplished with the breath. Gentle breathing techniques allow the person to develop control over the breathing mechanism and the rhythm of the breath; bonding with the lobes of the lungs and the breath whilst having a beneficial effect on the body structures and circulation. The use of physical postures with this breath further develops the strength of the breath. There is also a powerfully relaxing effect on the large Solar Plexus nerve centre, our emotional brain, helping to keep it decongested. I run an online Breathing Class on Wednesday lunchtimes 12:00 -12:30 pm all levels. Please contact me for details.
