Welcome to the December edition! The Front cover page has been very kindly supplied by Colette Langton of Colette Langton Photography. Colette said “Piglets on the Tye, not very Christmassy but I thought they summed up that '2020 vibe', rather well!”. I did mention that I may need to go vegetarian after seeing that picture. Well this is my last magazine for the year. I have thought long and hard over how I can sum up this year, but unless I was rude and inappropriate for such a publication I will not.

I am however gladdened by the fact that I live in Peacehaven & Telscombe Cliffs. Neighbours have come together to support each other, even when individual family units have had to separate. My favourite memory was of a family that all cued in cars near where I lived to noisily and beautifully wish an elderly relative a very happy birthday. Groups were set up and people readied to help, however they could. Our shops that could stay open have carried the flag and kept people fed and watered. Our local charities and community aid groups have been very busy. And for any business out there that has managed to quietly keep working and weather this storm you should be very proud. This was the first time in over 10 years that a publication of the Peacehaven Directory did not get delivered. I was so glad though to have so much support from the Peacehaven Council, residents and businesses alike, who helped to make the on-line edition known by sharing far and wide. It was a very humbling experience. For any of you that have lost loved ones this year, whether to the virus or not, my hat comes off to you. I attended two lockdown funerals, one in person and one on-line and neither brought much comfort because you could not share grief in the normal way. As we move slowly into the uncharted waters of 2021, I hope you all get a chance to meet up with some family and friends and celebrate your type of festival your way. I think we have all been extra good, so Santa should be working overtime this year. Look out for each other. Anne (Editor)

Good Riddance to 2020 ....You won’t be missed I am old enough to Remember the Falklands War and both Gulf Wars. They were horrible but distant things played out on TV. The Pandemic is different. This feels very real. In America it is downright terrifying as the deaths soar past 250,000 Trump is only concerned about his bruised ego and empty bank accounts. In the UK the Conservative party has been too busy bickering amongst themselves and responding too slowly to the unfolding crisis. It is very frustrating that politicians are glibly promising vaccines before Christmas.

see the on-line magazine at www.peacehavendirectory.co.uk or

No-one appears to have cracked the logistical nightmare of transporting, storing and distributing a medicine that needs to be kept at -75C. By all means give people hope but stop fantasising. 2021 looks like another interesting year with Brexit in the midst of global financial upheaval. My only advice is if you are considering any major purchases, do it this year. On a more optimistic note, if people wear masks, leave space and wash their hands things should feel calmer by next Christmas.

Keep positive, enjoy the holiday break….

Please choose the football club when you Co-op shop By Pitchside View

PEACEHAVEN & TELSCOMBE FC has been selected to go through to the next round of the Co-op Local Community Fund scheme.

The Co-op Local Community Fund supports projects across the UK that Co-op members care about. Every time a Co-op member buys selected Co-op branded products and services, the Co-op will give local causes a helping hand and Peacehaven & Telscombe FC has been selected as a Co-op good cause. For the football club to benefit from your support you need to be a Co-op member. You then need to select the football club as your good cause. The more members who select the football club, the more funds will be raised for the club.

Peacehaven & Telscombe FC club provides football for everyone and currently fields 23 boys and girls teams at youth level as well as four men’s teams. The football club is a community owned football club with one member one vote. Please support your local football club when you shop at the Co-op. If the club’s fixtures continue in December as planned, here are the home games: December 12, Steyning Town kick-off 3pm. December 26, Newhaven, kick-off 11am. To find out more go to the club’s website.

Entry to first team games is £7 adults, £5 To become a Co-op member you can join online at concessions and for under 18s its £1. If your www.coop.co.uk/membership. youngster is a club member they will get in for free. What is the Co-op Local Community Fund? It provides funding for projects which benefit local communities which are centred around Co-op food stores and funeral homes. In the tradition of their founders, Co-operative members believe in the ethical values of honesty, openness, social responsibility and caring for others.

When Covid restrictions are lifted, you can hire the club’s clubhouse from £150 by calling Sue Norwood on 07946 107041. Keep in touch with Peacehaven & Telscombe FC at www.peacehavenfootball.com on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

32 Knitting Great-Granny raises £200 for Martlets in two weeks making cuddly toys Peacehaven based great-gran, Phyllis Parris, 86 wanted to keep busy and use her skills during Lockdown so she started knitting cuddly toy animals Phyllis was hoping to sell one or two to raise money for local hospice charity, Martlets. She kept knitting all through Lockdown, making almost 30. Her granddaughter helped to sell her creations through local online community group, Nextdoor (www.nextdoor.co.uk), and both were taken by surprise by the interest in the cuddly toys. In just two weeks, she had sold almost all of them and made £200 to donate to Martlets. Phyllis commented: “Like so many other people, I am finding life quite difficult because of Coronavirus and lockdown restrictions and I wanted to keep myself occupied while I was at home. I love knitting but wanted to try and do some good and help a local charity. My husband and our family were helped by Martlets when he was ill and I know how much care they give to people in our community, so I knew I wanted to help them if I could. “I had an idea to make cuddly toy animals, as that way I could be a bit more creative and work on something different every day. I called all the animals my ‘Martlets Menagerie’! I was encouraged by my granddaughter, Lisa, to see if we could sell some of them for £10 each or even just a donation. To be honest I wasn’t expecting to raise much, but these days I think any small contribution can make a difference to charities who are struggling to raise money.

“We just really didn’t have any idea they would be so popular. I think it might be because there is such a wide variety of animals – I have had the most requests for my octopus so far and they are all different colours and characters, so people can choose the ones they like the best. People seem happy to buy them to donate money to such a good cause too. We have had such lovely comments from people who have bought them, that it has meant even more that people have been so kind as well as generous. “I was overwhelmed when Lisa told me about how much money we raised so quickly – I think I better get knitting some more in this new Lockdown and maybe for Christmas! “ Martlets relies on community support for the majority of its funding, but has been unable to hold fundraising events and has had to close its charity shops for many months. There are many ways to support Martlets to keep caring from shopping online to selling cuddly toys or holding a birthday fundraiser - any donations big or small make a real difference. To find out more aboutMartlets and ideas to help fundraise visit www.martlets.org.uk.

Public consultation on masterplan for centre of Peacehaven including the Meridian site A masterplan has been published for a new Peacehaven town centre on the Meridian site and a consultation has been launched by the Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group to get the public’s views. The consultation can be completed online by visiting: www.peacehaventowncouncil.gov.uk/neighbourhood-plan A masterplan, created by consultant’s AECOM, includes design ideas for commercial, public and residential buildings to contribute in the region of 100 homes to the town’s statutory requirement, set by Lewes District Council, to provide a minimum of 255 housing units by 2030. The aim of the masterplan is to improve the design of the area, make it more sustainable and a better place to live and work. The consultation is asking residents for views on a range of options, which include: ● Development of supermarket and shops ● Creating public squares and community spaces for cultural events ● Improving ease of use of the site ● Building new residential properties ● Providing space potentially for outdoor food and drink, youth activities and office use. Cathy Gallagher, Chair of the Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group said, “We have passed on resident’s views from the initial survey and have already pushed back on the heights of the buildings and the number of housing units from 320 to 123. We now feel that the final version of the masterplan meets some of the designated housing needs and the main aspirations of the residents, which were set out in the initial consultation survey in 2019.” The closing date for comments is Thursday 31 December The Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group will then write a summary report setting out the residents’ comments and findings for the Meridian Site, which will be used to shape the Neighbourhood Planning policies for the area. The summary report will be completed and available for residents to look at in February 2021. The masterplan is designed to set out resident’s ambitions for the site and is not a planning application. The Meridian site is currently the subject of a redevelopment proposal and by setting out aspirations for this area the Steering Group hopes that developers will look at the masterplan and take some of the ideas on board as they design the site.

abcfund News Sometimes those unsung hero’s need a mention too… The abcfund committee is delighted to announce that they have been awarded £6,000 from The Co-op Community Fund here in Peacehaven. These much-needed funds will contribute towards providing trips and treats for some very deserving families. This year the fund has provided colouring books, crayons, bubbles, puzzles, games, books, etc. for the Royal Alexandra Children’s hospital. During the summer holidays over 50 families enjoyed days out at Drusillas, Knockhatch, Fishers Farm and the Palace Pier. With Christmas approaching the committee are all set to pack 100 luxury food hampers to be distributed locally along with toys and games.

Sadly the pantomime for this year is on hold, but the good news is that all 400 seats are paid for and waiting for next year. Together with the help of local fencing & landscaping company GPD Fencing and Barclays Bank, Seaford the committee have organised a Grand Raffle with lots of prizes to be won including a holiday, cash, hampers, gift vouchers and many more donated by generous local traders. Tickets can be purchased from The Good Companions pub, GPD Fencing and Barclays Bank, Seaford. They can also be bought online by contacting info@abcfund.org.

Food Journaling This month Chris gives us ideas to take control of our bodies by casting a critical eye over what we eat and what movement we actually do… What did you eat for dinner 3 days ago? What did you eat an hour ago? If you are having trouble remembering, don’t worry, you still pass, you are normal.

Picking off the kids plates as you clear the table and the fact that the takeaway coffee has 400 calories. What you think is a one tablespoon serving of peanut butter is more like a quarter cup. You will soon find that it is these little things that add up, and making these types of adjustments can make all the difference. Awareness brings change. Knowing more about your food intake and your eating decisions makes you more self-aware. The more self-awareness means, you are in charge.

Most people cannot remember what they ate an hour ago. When they do recall from memory, those memories are often Skewed. The memories can be unreliable, even though you swear they are right. Often my job as a Personal Trainer includes looking at the amount of exercise my clients do. Also how much food do people actually eat? The only trouble is the common tendency is to think we move more and eat less than we really do. Research that compares peoples recall of their food to what they ate, shows that people can under-estimate their intake by up to 1000 calories per day.

Start with observations, don’t judge yourself or react emotionally or analyse for yourself. Simply collect the data, be unflinchingly honest, make those changes and see the change in yourself. If this article has made you sit up and think, try the journal for a few weeks and see what results you come up with. It could be a great way to loose a few pounds before Christmas, I am sure everyone would be up for that.

So especially in the case of food, instead of relying on memory, I would encourage the use of modern technology. You can record what you eat with the use of a pen and paper, mobile phone pictures and food tracking app's. All of the above can help you to remember all important factors. Once you become more aware, those gaps and habits become easier to adjust.

Chris Odle Fitness 07968 083655

Once you start to record this data for several days, you will notice things like the extra glass of wine with your dinner.

(Aether Bios Clinic) Bridgeford’s Best Bites: Osteopathy Tips - SOUNDS THAT HEAL AND HURT We all know that some sounds make us feel good and others less so, yet can sounds hurt us? We are going to look at 2 conditions: ASMR, Auto Sensory Meridian Response and Misophonia, literally meaning a ‘hatred of sound’, as well as healing sounds. If you have a condition known as ASMR, related to the way your brain is wired, then when you hear sounds like whispering you will get a little tingling sensation through your skull, down the neck and spine and even into the extremities. This also creates a sense of euphoria, wellbeing, relaxation, and it helps some people with sleep. Somebody who does not have ASMR, will not know what all the whispering is about, and it will not really mean anything to them or do anything to them. The people who have ASMR are watching the videos in their hundreds of thousands to relax and have a state of euphoria. Though part of this condition is auditory it can also relate to physical touch where having a massage or having your hair done can create that same euphoric feeling in these people. Some sounds, like gently rustling of, e.g. foil, plastic or paper would give that same euphoric feeling to people with ASMR. Another is a gentle scratching sound, e.g. taking tweezers and very gently scratching a microphone. Anatomy and Science: There have been some scientific studies, although there is no real conclusive evidence about what causes this. It is to do with an area of the brain called the anterior insular cortex, deep within the lateral sulcus of the brain, not visible from surface view. It is also known as the ‘Island of Reil’ and is described as paralimbic or limbic integration cortex; it relates to the hippocampus and the amygdala. These are our emotional centres deep in the brain and people who have this condition appear to have more neurons and more activity firing in this area. Misophonia is at the other end of the spectrum, along similar lines, though the sounds are distressing to the sufferer. Whilst we all find sounds like a dripping tap irritating, most people can zone it out. To a person with Misophonia, they can experience physical pain in response to these sounds and they may also experience emotions such as rage, anxiety, or fear. Some common triggers are chewing sounds, particularly people chewing loudly with their mouths open, the jangling repetitive noise of coins being played within someone’s pocket, or the finger/foot tapping and drumming noises that people often make unconsciously.

Somebody who suffers with Misophonia, and it is a suffering, may need to either remove themselves from the situation or do something like wear noise cancelling headphones. Sometimes counselling type therapies and CBT can help to find triggers and ways to deal with them. If you have ASMR it is not really a problem as it is very relaxing; if you have Misophonia it can be a real problem and disrupt people’s lives. Everybody has conditions in different degrees and although it does not seem that stress is the cause of Misophonia, undoubtedly when we are stressed, everything we suffer with is less easy to deal with. Both of these conditions are thought to perhaps be something to do with PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) or OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder), Autism, ADD (attention deficit disorder) and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactive disorder), although there is no real proof about it and nobody seems to know what causes it so there is no real treatment. There are similarities the brains of people with Misophonia and people with ASMR and they are also thought to be related to Synaesthesia. This is where people will hear something and feel something physically or they will think, e.g. that Tuesday is purple because Tuesday has always been purple; it is basically a mixing of the senses. So, whether you have Misophonia, ASMR or Synaesthesia, the chances are you have some different wiring in your brain that makes you suffer or enjoy these conditions. Sound therapy such as using tuning forks, gongs or voice has been found to have a beneficial effect on sleep and relaxation partly due to the proximity of the vagus nerve to the eardrum. As it is to do with the vibration, it is not necessary for the listener to be able to actually hear for the vagus nerve to feel this vibration and influence its calming effect on the body.
