Welcome to the January edition and Happy New Year! The Front cover page has been very kindly supplied by Colette Langton of Colette Langton Photography. She called this photo a simple image with a silver lining for 2021.
Contents
Happy New Year to you all. I am writing this before Christmas at the moment, so it it hard to comment but I am hoping 2021 is going to be much better, although there is still a lot for the country as a whole to work out, and getting back to a life we want to lead may take a while. I am sure it will happen though.
P34 - 37 Local news pages.
I sincerely hope that you all had a pleasant festive period with some sort of support network. I think of our wonderful selfless people in Peacehaven, who give up their Christmas time every year to help the elderly and vulnerable. Kempton House, abcfund and CTLA come to mind, but I am sure there are others. I am really looking forward to getting our ‘What’s on Page’ back up and running again and advertising the wonderful community events. So when your club or activity does get back together again please do let me know. There is nothing nicer than having the community information in the magazine, that is one of the reasons I publish this magazine. Despite the difficulties they faced last year, our intrepid local businesses are still up and running and ready to assist you with anything that might be needed, so please look here first when getting your quotes and keep it local if you can. Just remember, brighter days are coming. Anne (Editor)

ean Views ....Terra opens another! With the 11 Generation processors launched, 10 Gen pouring of production lines, Intel has announced that it is discontinuing the 9 Generation. Frankly, the 9 Gen were virtually invisible outside the corporate environment (they had a high failure rate in production, so the surviving processors rarely made it in to domestic machines). As a result, the 8 Gen is also being retired (it was kept going an extra year to fill the shortfall in 9 Gen CPUs).
LOCAL BUSINESS
By Bruce Cameron-Stuart
My main supplier, Terra, has just started ramping up production of their new 10 Gen i3 laptop. One feature catches everyone’s attention: the colour backlit keyboard. I have been fascinated that customers have quite strong views about what their default keyboard colour should be. Thankfully there is an onscreen colour wheel that can be called up to choose not just the colour but the exact shade. Superficial? No, satisfying when the keyboard is bathed in your favourite warm yellow…. 2020 was an awful year, 2021 a new dawn…
On a personal basis, I have sold quite a few 8 Gen NUCs recently as they are great value whilst they are at clearance prices. I have been so impressed I have bought an extra stock before they disappear for good. So why am I selling older machines? The introductory models are normally Celeron and Pentium models. If you are on a tighter budget or your needs are modest, it can be difficult to justify an extra £75 or £150 to have an i3 Processor. The budget processors are often based on older architecture with some features restricted or missing. A faster, full featured, 8 Gen, at the same price is a huge step up. Covid-19 has meant that some models have lingered because of the supply shortages.

First annual dinner… 1924 style!
By Pitchside View
WITH Peacehaven & Telscombe FC’s centenary fast approaching in 2023, this month we take a look at the club’s first annual dinner.
Club director and local historian Stanley Bernard has unearthed this brilliant picture taken at the first ever Peacehaven FC annual dinner. The occasion was on Friday May 30 1924 and the dinner took place in the now long gone dining room of Hotel Peacehaven. The Stonehouse, Peacehaven is now built on the site very close to where Hotel Peacehaven previously was. The picture and story was published in the Downland Post on July 1 1924. The story also mentions some of the club’s committee members, one being Felix Powell whose claim to fame was he co-wrote the iconic World War One song with his brother, ‘Pack Up Your Troubles In An Old Kit Bag and Smile, Smile, Smile’.
Stanley Bernard is the author of ‘A True History of Towns Nearly New Towns Peacehaven & Telscombe, published by Country Books – ISBN 978-1910489-62-8. The book costs £15.99 from Amazon plus postage or direct from Stanley Bernard via the club. There is currently only one home game this month - January 2ⁿ: Eastbourne Town. There may be additions to the fixture list. To find out more go to the club’s website. Entry to first team games is £7 adults, £5 concessions and for under 18s its £1. If your youngster is a club member they will get in for free.
Powell committed suicide during World War II in 1942, aged 63. Wearing the uniform of the Peacehaven Home Guard, he shot himself in the heart while on guard duty, using his own rifle. During the evening, thanks was also given to Peacehaven’s founding father, Charles Neville, who it says ‘loaned his char-a-banc to the club so they could get to away games'. A charabanc or "char-à-banc"Is a type of early motor coach, usually open-topped, common in Britain during the early part of the 20 century.
When Covid restrictions are lifted, you can hire the club’s clubhouse from £150 by calling Sue Norwood on 07946 107041. Keep in touch with Peacehaven & Telscombe FC at www.peacehavenfootball.com on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

Havens Community Hub Havens Community Hub CIC has been recognised on the UK Social Enterprise Roll of Honour for their work supporting people throughout the pandemic. The outstanding work of the Hub and its projects over the course of the year has been recognised at a special event bringing together the UK’s business community. The Roll of Honour was announced at Social Enterprise Futures which took place on the 25th November and saw nearly 1000 attendees come together to celebrate the heroes of the last year. The Havens Community Hub has adapted its services and community work and has run a food waste and insecurity prevention coop, social clubs for older people and home welfare support during the lockdowns and supported the launch of the only volunteer driver scheme in the Lewes District - Havens Community Cars.
movement, stating that “there is no route to the future that does not have social enterprise at its centre”. Other speakers included leaders of big business such as former CEO of Unilever, Paul Polman and economist, Kate Raworth who stressed the sheer extent to which business needs to change to build a fairer and more sustainable economy. The event was organised by Social Enterprise UK, in partnership with social enterprise trade bodies across the home nations – Social Enterprise Northern Ireland, Social Enterprise Scotland and the Wales Co-operative Centre.
At the Social Enterprise Futures event, the Havens Community Hub was celebrated along with others on the Social Enterprise Roll of Honour, by a session hosted by actor, comedian and director, Chris Addison. The Roll of Honour acknowledges those individuals and businesses which, over the course of an extremely challenging year, have demonstrated the strength, passion and resilience which is so characteristic of the social enterprise sector. Commenting on being named as part of the Roll of Honour, Hub founder, Paula Woolven said: "Social Enterprises are always at the heart of their communities and during the COVID-19 pandemic, we have been doing all we can to pivot our business model to keep supporting those who need it most. We feel honoured to have been recognised in this way." Speakers at Social Enterprise Futures included former Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who commented on the success and strength of the UK’s social enterprise Pictured above: Paula Woolven

CYCLE SEAHAVEN KEEPING OUR MEMBERS MOTIVATED THROUGH LOCKDOWN Whilst 2020 has brought some challenging and turbulent times our way, it is true to say that the members of Cycle Seahaven have embraced the spirit of the club to its fullest. We are a club that prides ourselves on encouraging members to get up and go cycling with guided rides, support and friendships in abundance. Due to Covid-19 restrictions our guided rides have been limited and so we came up with new and fun ways to keep our members riding. Virtual rides became a way for everyone to take part, even those isolating at home. Our first virtual ride saw over 80 members adding their miles together to “Cycle Around the UK”. 14,000 miles were cycled and led the way to our next virtual challenge. “The Pan American Highway”. More members joined in and with over 120 taking part we managed to complete the challenge in just 5 weeks. A total of 19,000 miles. The photos and stories we shared kept us all motivated and inspired us to keep riding. When the opportunity allowed, our Ride Leaders stepped back into the helm and saw our many touring group rides both road and off road at varying levels being offered. Tony Roswell was the first to start back with his regular Monday rides. The ever popular Thursday night’s social ride was back on the calendar thanks to Kate Carver and our successful ladies only rides made a return thanks to Sarah Winser and Kate. Eight ladies enjoyed a lovely sunny ride to Litlington Tea Rooms for brunch before heading to Seaford Prom for some tasty ice cream. The second consisted of both a road and MTB option where both groups cycled from Seaford Prom to The Big Park, Peacehaven. As always plenty of chatter, laughter and a nice hot drink to finish.
9 Ride Leaders and 21 riders took to their bikes on what was a blustery, cold and wet morning. 7 Small groups with staggered start times allowed us all to keep to the tight restrictions but to still have a great ride out. All sharing the same route and weather and of course all enjoying the usual refreshments this time at Southease Youth Hostel. The club has been inundated with positive feedback and a request to do it all again once restrictions are lifted. With a new virtual challenge being launched for December, another multi-group ride in the planning and plenty of published rides for you to follow, there really isn’t a better time to get on your bike, join our club and get exploring. Check out our website (cycleseahaven.org.uk) for more details and how to join this friendly, fantastic local cycling club. Chair - Cycle Seahaven
Our team of volunteer ride leaders came together in October under the guidance of Dave Sutton and Sarah Winser to run a multi-group led ride.

Overeating with a catch A simple change in your approach to overeating, can lead to significant results… I think everyone experiences overeating at some point in their lives. For some, it seems to have no lasting effect. For others, however, it can be long lasting and damage not only their health, it can damage their self-esteem. We are going to look at the simple things like slowing down, relaxing, and paying attention, these are the tricks that can help you to overcome these cravings quickly and without too many lasting effects. Overeating could be due to various factors:Social overeating (as in “No more pasta! OK, maybe a little”) Distracted eating (“Oops! Did I finish that entire bag of crisps while watching Love Actually?”) Binge eating ("I completely lost control"), Emotional Eating. (“I feel bad, this will make me feel better, I will worry about it tomorrow)” It's common to struggle with your food choices sometimes. In fact it's normal. So what can you do to overcome this issue? When you overeat, try a new practice; Instead of stressing on it, just do it, but do it slowly. More speed leads to less control. Have you ever noticed what overeating episodes and/or poor food choices tend to have in common? Speed. If you've ever been through a classic binge, you know the feeling. It's like going on autopilot. Hand, mouth, hand, mouth, hand, mouth. Picking up speed as you go, faster and faster and faster. Once you get serious momentum, it feels almost impossible to stop. Right now, if you're struggling with binge eating, don't try to stop it. Instead, notice how binge eating does something important and valuable for you.
Right now, overeating solves a problem for you (even if it creates other problems). If you're in the throes of a compulsive eating episode, eat as much as you need to—and whatever types of foods you want—in order to cope with the feelings you're experiencing. Eat until you're done. The only thing you do differently is that you eat slowly. Instead of "don't overeat", overeat slowly, and notice what happens. Is that irresponsible? If you're like many people who have grappled with overeating, you've tried to "just stop". You've tried to talk yourself out of it. You've felt guilty, regretful, and ashamed. Did it work? Maybe ... it could be more "responsible" and productive to learn to be present with what you're eating and feeling, rather than checking out. You can practice that by accepting your body's coping behaviour, slowing down for it & listening to you and your bodies reactions.

Y The Coffee Co You may have visited the coffee shop which was previously known as Coffee Haven. Well it is under new ownership. It is now called Y The Coffee Co and is owned by Rachel Crombie Al-Hattabi and her husband Yahya. I paid a visit to find out more. I think you will agree they are passionate about their coffee. My name is Rachel, I am British and my husband is Starting our first business in the middle of a global from Yemen and that is the beginning of the story, pandemic has certainly not been ideal, but, that said, alongside the fact that I had always planned to have we have been blessed with many friendly faces and my own business and Terri (my sister and manager) supportive people and that is how we plan to continue had always hoped to run a coffee shop. We had being part of the community. We hope we have certainly done enough market research between us. created a comfortable, friendly environment, perfect Earlier this year it all came together. We have both for a coffee, breakfast, light lunch and eventually a lived locally for many years and when the property catch up with friends! became available we knew the location and we knew Look out for the freshly roasted beans in the very near the potential. future! Yemen is not a well known country and yet it has been producing the original Arabica coffee beans for hundreds of years. The traditional growing and farming process in the mountain terraces has kept the unique 'Mocha' chocolate flavour and deep fruity undertones of the beans. At Y The Coffee Co we only use Yemeni coffee beans. We have developed a business relationship with Mocha Valley and its founder Arzaq Alnajjar, the first female coffee cupper in Yemen. She works with our farmers and ensures the quality of our beans using a cupping process and reporting the flavour for us. We have just begun the trials for roasting the beans and very soon will be able to roast and use our own coffee beans. It was always important to us that we supported the local economy and this way we have also been able to support a country which has been devastated by war and famine. (Aether Bios Clinic) Bridgeford’s Best Bites: Osteopathy Tips - Back Pain BACK PAIN A common problem that affects most people at some time, mostly in the lower back (lumbago), though can be felt anywhere in the spine. May be triggered by strained muscles, tendons or ligaments, wear and tear, bad posture, poor bending and lifting technique as well as stress. It is the leading cause of long-term sickness in UK causing more the 34 million lost workdays in 2019 due to back and neck pain. Although painful, it is not serious in most cases. Symptoms: Pain, dull or sharp ache, tenderness, stiffness, weakness, numbness, or tingling (can travel down the leg in sciatica and disc problems). Joint pain when walking or stiffness first thing in the morning lasting more than half an hour may be a sign of arthritis. Indication that serious problems may exist are swelling, constant pain not eased by laying down, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in genitals, buttock or back passage, sudden weight loss, pain in the chest, high fever or after an accident. Causes: More serious causes are disc problems, sciatica, whiplash, frozen shoulder, ankylosing spondylitis; rare causes fracture and cancer. Most cases related to minor sprains, strains, injuries or trapped, irritated nerves. Common causes developing over time are bad posture at work, driving, on the couch, bending, lifting, or twisting awkwardly, overstretching and overuse, sleeping on a poor mattress. Risk factors are stress, smoking, pregnancy, overweight, long term corticosteroids. Diagnosis: Your doctor will ask you to describe the pain and where you feel it, when it started, what makes it better or worse and if it has happened in the past; also, about lifestyle and work. Examination will assess range of movement in your back, ability to lift your legs, sit, stand, and walk, testing knee-jerk and ankle reflexes. You may be referred for X-ray or MRI scan. Treatment: In short term back pain keep as active as possible, use hot and cold compression packs and over the counter painkillers. Immobility can weaken the back muscles and may hurt more in the long run. Staying relaxed and positive is important for recovery. Treatment for back pain lasting more than 6 weeks Involves painkillers, exercise and manual therapy or acupuncture.
In longer term back pain counselling, antidepressants, or a pain clinic. Spinal surgery is only recommended when all else has failed or the pain is so severe that you cannot sleep or carry out daily activities. Prevention: Maintain good posture at work, home, and play. Learn to lift, bend and twist safely. Exercise regularly without strain. Improve flexibility and strength, particularly in core muscles. Wear suitable shoes. Learn relaxation techniques if you are stressed. Maintain a healthy weight. Osteopathic/Manual Management: Take a detailed case history to understand the nature of the problem and surrounding issues. Examine spine and all surrounding tissues; muscles, ligaments, nerves, fascia, etc., for movement, strength and functionality and assess nerve pathways. Perform orthopaedic and neurological tests and determine the root cause. Treat to improve strength, functionality and movement and reduce tension, inflammation, pain and swelling. Postural and ergonomic advice regarding lifting, carrying, bending, twisting, sleeping, footwear, sitting at desk, car, couch, as well as rehabilitation exercises. Treatment may include manipulation, deep soft tissue massage, trigger point therapy, muscle energy techniques, fascial techniques, dry needling, etc. Self Help: Stretching and strengthening are really important for your back health, though if you have problems, it is important to do the correct exercises and avoid aggravating the issue. Heat or cold may be helpful as well as some ointments, depending what the issue is. This video on sciatica is good for opening the spine and will help most lower back issues https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0O_SHJAO6c&t=71s though if you have sciatica the general back pain exercises can be too much. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APENtjQNG4A&t=13s Please only do what feels good and stay within your limits; remember that the key to stretching is listening to your body, backing off when you feel tension, approaching the tension gently and using the breathe to encourage the body to let go and release tension; stay in your comfort zone We are happy to advise you on your health matters.
