This month’s edition is usually a scramble together affair. Advertisers often take a little break so the magazine can seem small. Not this month though, I have never been so busy with new and returning advertisements and lovely articles. It was a busy time but fun! Madness reigns once again in the world but our intrepid advertisers keep battling. Do take a look here first and ask for quotes. I have had good service from Chris and Toby Decorating, who helped me finish a hallway with very high walls and ceilings without breaking a sweat. I found out that Maverick Barber Lounge also have a ladies section. Pip did a bespoke cut for me that was wonderful. Lin Bridgeford of Aether Bios helped me with health and structural issues. A small-time spent with Lin always leaves me feeling much better quickly. I have also had 2 pairs of glasses courtesy of Scrivens Opticians in the Meridian Centre. I can now see the screen comfortably because one pair of glasses is for computer work and I won’t get headaches.

Chris Odle - Local Personal Trainer talks frankly about stress… The word, stress, can have different meanings but, most of us know it as a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or demanding circumstances. But have you thought about what our lives would be like without it; is there such thing as good and bad stress? The same exact stressors of job pressure, kids, money, and yes, an intense exercise and eating regimen can energize and inspire you or sap your will and your mojo. It is a well-known fact that being stressed out can make it really hard to reach your health and fitness goals. But it has also been proven that not having enough stress can slow your progress too? Stress isn’t something that happens to you; stress is your response to the challenges you face. Things that happen in our day-to-day living can either have you acting like a superhuman being or crumble and sink into your sofa. The trick is to find your stress sweet spot; use it to propel you to reach your potential and your goals.
3. If it is a longer-term plan, track your progress. You need to document behaviours, processes and outcomes and be ready to adjust if necessary. 4. Make sure you have a coach or mentor, someone you are accountable to, that will help you along the way. Don’t forget to take care of yourself. Recharging those batteries can ensure you perform at your optimum over some time. Take time to sleep and eat well and take good supplements. Relax in a way that you love such as, walking in nature, going for a swim, spending time with loved ones. You must find a balance; if you are tired, bad-tempered or sick, you are no good to anyone. Ask for support when needed from a mentor, counsellor, life coach. Turn off electronic stimulators at least once a week.
To reach your potential without crashing for health and exercise or any other type of activity, do the following: 1. Set goals; these need to be realistic goals that the results, good or bad, can be measured so that you can adjust them if you need to. 2. These goals need to be broken down into a plan that you can achieve in a day, over the weeks or months.

Peacehaven Community Orchard I have been in Peacehaven rather a long time; I am a born and bred Brightonian. This year in my pursuit to get out into the open and help with a Community project, I stumbled upon the Peacehaven Orchard. If you have missed this little gem situated behind the Big Park’s children’s playground, you will be forgiven. Orchards do not establish themselves in a matter of months and, apple trees do not come into maturity for a good 5 or more years. This land is a big challenge with the crazy winds that whip through this open space for a large percentage of the year, so the trees have to be covered with protective netting. Other trees and shrubs have been planted around the orchard to provide a much-needed windbreak. They also give beautiful colours and a lovely feast for the birds and wildlife all year round. As I started working with the team, it opened my eyes to the hard work needed to protect our green spaces from the ever-encroaching building developments. This was what the orchard space looked like before work started. It was the builders yard for the Sewage works.
The orchard covers an area of approximately 5 acres and is home to around 100 apple trees, many of which are Sussex varieties. Brighton Permaculture Trust has provided expertise and training over the years. The orchard is now managed by a group of community volunteers, led by David Seabrook and Sue Griffiths and is well established.
Just some of the beautiful examples of bio-diversity from the area created since the wild flowers were scattered.
During September 2019, voles were becoming a particular problem. They were eating the roots of the young trees; several were lost many more were damaged. The Covid-19 restrictions also put things back for a while in 2020. Throughout 2021 beautiful wildflowers provided vibrant colours and a haven for birds and wildlife.

Volunteer days are held throughout the year. Anyone is welcome. You take on jobs depending on your level of fitness and ability. So far, I have raked the grass that needed to be removed and put into the shelterbelt to provide a good mulch. I have mended fences damaged from the high winds and sometimes vandals. Weeding is always needed around the trees, and pruning, planting, watering and mulching. The group are always very welcoming and friendly, you do as much or a little as you can manage. I learnt early on that a pair of secateurs and a strong pair of gloves would be my best friend, water and sunblock in the summer and some waterproof clothing in the winter.

Common resolution themes revolve around health and behaviour: stopping smoking, losing weight, stopping an unwanted or unhelpful habit, behaviour, limiting belief or phobia; starting a new exercise program, healthy eating, a new career path, a new relationship or learning a new skill. How often have you set out with good intentions only to give up on them before the end of January? If what you have been doing is not working for you, it’s time to do something new. If you think you should change and a part of you very strongly doesn’t want to, then it may not be the right time for you to consider effective change as you may unpick any changes you set up for yourself and revert back – sound familiar? If you want to find a new way to successfully make and keep resolutions it is helpful to look at what you want to stop, what you want to start and what you want to keep. It is considered that our unconscious mind knows everything and its main task is to take care of us and keep us safe. Throughout life we create habits, thoughts and behaviours to ensure this happens; sometimes these come from trauma and other times from events that seem less traumatic. We also create positive and neutral habits, thoughts and behaviours. There is always a positive intention behind these behaviours, though sometimes the less positive ‘programs’ are out of date and can be interfering with our lives, without us knowing it.
This approach creates new ways of understanding how your verbal and non-verbal communication affects your brain, presenting the opportunity to improve communication skills whilst simultaneously gaining control over automatic functions of our neurology so that we can modify unconscious biases. Hypnosis uses a gentle state of relaxation that feels similar to yoga relaxation (Yoga Nidra) at the end of class. It is about YOU creating a greater rapport with YOUR own unconscious mind to help YOU create the behaviours YOU desire. YOU are always fully in control and will not be running around doing silly things like on a stage show! This approach helps you find out what beliefs, habits and unwanted behaviours are holding you back from living a balanced life and helps you deal with the daily stresses and anxieties of life. Coaching helps you transform your present to create your future and maximise your full potential to reach your desired goals. This approach focuses on your life aspirations, building clarity and confidence, strategies and tools, which will empower you towards action to re-create your life.
