Welcome to the July edition. The Front cover page has been very kindly supplied by Colette Langton of Colette Langton Photography. This month she has been having fun doing ice cold sea swimming and photographing at the same time, brave lady!

Contents P7 Ocean Views P34 - 39 Local news pages.

Still rather uncertain out in the big wide world at the moment. One thing is for sure though, we have to learn how to live with what is happening, not keep shutting down. One thing I have observed over the last year is, when Peacehaveners come into difficult situations they band together to help each other and the business people don’t go into apathy, they get entrepreneurial, these are the things that keep me here.

ean Views Ships and containers... ....lead to more price rises Early this year I wrote an article about price rises, brace yourself, I hear more are on the way. This wave of increases is to do with shipping and containers. As warehouses emptied in Europe last year, China was deep in lockdown, unable to respond. As Europe drifted into Lockdown the giant manufacturing Chinese machine restarted. In a short period, a tidal wave of goods poured towards the ports, into ships for export. At the end of their maritime journey the problems began. Upon arrival there were frequent hold ups to find a berth. With factories locally running at limited capacity there has been insufficient containers being loaded for the return journey. Shipping rates soared to subsidise the partially filled return voyages. Once the containers were emptied at their destinations, they sat around as few shipping agents were prepared to pay for an empty container to be shipped back to Asia.

By Bruce Cameron-Stuart

With Warehouse shortages in China containers are being pressed into service to store newly manufactured stock. With long lead times between placing orders and stock arriving meant some don’t have the need or resources to rush to unload the newly arrived container. The final cause was the Suez Canal fiasco where ships and containers were left stranded on the wrong side of the blockage. As the Canal started to clear the shipping companies are looking to recoup their losses. Multiple sources speak of shipping rates that have increased eight-fold or more. Ultimately these kind of transport costs cannot be absorbed; they will lead to higher prices. Only time will tell how much…….

Saltdean Townswomen’s Guild Are you looking for something like this? Written by Diane – on behalf of Saltdean Townswomen’s Guild Life is looking up and we at Saltdean Townswomen’s Guild are excited about our re-launch. Our committee, working to National Guidelines, are creating a great programme of speakers and events for the coming few months, and we always welcome new members and fresh ideas. Maybe if you are new to the area, recently retired or would just like to meet people, and you are free in the afternoon on the first Thursday of the month, then maybe you would like to join us and be part of this group of local women. The Townswomen’s Guild has been a friendship group for women since 1929 and offers support and stability in an increasingly fragmented society, with each member benefiting from a strong national movement that has remained a cornerstone for thousands of women across the UK. Townswomen play a pivotal role in communicating important national issues to governmental bodies and the media. Since its inception members have collectively voiced their concerns to change and improve the livelihoods of women, something that is still pursued as passionately as ever. We can attend national events to use our voice, individually and collectively, for the good of society, and however busy Townswomen may be, many still find the time to help those in need.

Members across the country play an active role in their communities and work tirelessly to raise funds for a variety of causes, some get actively involved in public affairs to advance the well-being of society. Alongside all this worthy and serious work, members nationwide have plenty of time for friendship and fun. Apart from our usual activities, some guilds have sports groups, such as bowls, tennis, golf and swimming and there are even National competitions. There are opportunities at Saltdean Guild to start one, or any other activity you may like to see, nevertheless, your involvement in the Guild can be as much or as little as you choose. We meet on the second Wednesday of the month at St. Martins church Hall, Longridge Ave. Saltdean, so our first meeting this year will be 11 August and we start at 2:00 pm, closing at 4:00 pm. This is of course conditional on the Governments guidelines. Contact Audrey (01273 303596), Elaine (01273 302375) or Diane (01273 640895) for more details and become part of the camaraderie and friendship that goes with being a member. Havens Community Hub Celebrates Volunteers Havens Community Hub ended Volunteers Week (1-7 June) with an afternoon tea for their volunteers at The Flying Fish in Denton to celebrate the fantastic contributions they make to the local community. The Hub covers the coastal stretch between Saltdean and Seaford and surrounding towns and villages. Havens Community Hub has a variety of volunteers that help the community in different ways. They include food waste prevention champions, volunteer drivers, and social engagement volunteers. They were all awarded certificates and badges that were handed out by the Deputy Mayor of Newhaven, Councillor George Taylor. The Havens Community Hub projects include preventing up to one ton of still edible surplus supermarket produce from reaching landfill every week (Havens Food Cooperative), providing activity and friendship through day centres for older people (Havens Happy Clubs), and volunteer drivers who help those who are unable to use public transport to reach medical and other daily living appointments (Havens Community Cars). Havens Community Hub aims to meet unmet community need and have also done so through smaller projects, such as helping with the Census Support Service and the school holiday booster bag scheme. Chair of Trustees, Paula Woolven, said “our volunteers are priceless. Through the generous giving of their time, they are making a real difference to their community – and their passion for helping others always shines through. I cannot thank them enough. During the pandemic, our resources were stretched thin to meet the tenfold increase in need we encountered and every single one of our volunteers stepped up to the plate, giving far more than we ever expected of them.” To make a donation to the work of the Hub and to find out more, please go to https://localgiving.org/charity/havenscommunityhub/ visit www.peacehavendirectory.co.uk or e: info@peacehavendirectory.co.uk

Brighton Male Voice Choir New members wanted, rehearsals due to commence, come and learn to sing with confidence!

Would you like to learn how to sing in a choir, or do you need to build up your singing confidence? The benefits of singing are well known, so why not come along and give it a try, with Brighton Male Voice Choir. We are a social, non-religious, community choir and we welcome men over the age of 18 who enjoy singing, in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. There are no auditions, and the ability to read music is not essential, as you will “pick this up” as you sing along with us to some well-known tunes. We do though ask you to sing in tune!

MacMillan Cancer Support, The Martlets Hospice, The Chestnut Tree Childrens' Hospice, The British Heart Foundation, Help for Heroes, Blind Veterans UK, the Saltdean Lido project and Brighton Housing Trust, which helps combat homelessness in Brighton. During the Covid restrictions our choir has continued to meet every week to rehearse via Zoom, which is still a novelty, even after a year, but we are very keen to start singing together again once conditions allow and everyone is fully vaccinated.

Brighton Male Voice Choir was formed in 1926, during the years following the depression. The original members were mainly recruited from the Welsh mining community who came to Brighton to work on the new Sea Defences, between Black Rock and Rottingdean. The choir has been singing in many forms since. After the war, the choir re-formed with weekly rehearsals held above Rosslyn’s Store in the London Road, Brighton, an old established draper’s shop, now long gone, and the present site of what used to be the Woolworth's store. In the fifties, the Brighton Male Voice Choir performed in several live appearances at The Dome for the BBC Radio programme "Friday Night is Music Night." The choir also participated successfully in many musical competitions that were popular at the time, winning several silver trophies. Over the years the Choir has raised thousands of pounds for a long list of local and national charities including Cancer Research UK,

Shopping Online with Martlets – 20% off until 15 July Martlets has seven charity shops across Brighton and Hove and coastal East Sussex that raise valuable funds for hospice care in the local community. You may not be aware that Martlets also has a range of online outlets, these were particularly important during the pandemic, helping the charity to continue to raise funds while their high street shops were closed.

The donated doll had special ‘Timpson’ shoes on which the Martlets team thought might make a difference. There were delighted that it did - it eventually sold for £1,957!

There is a Martlets shop www.online/martlets.org.uk that sells local interest items, jewellery and great gift ideas - it currently even has a genuine Rolex for sale donated by the wife of a patient. Martlets also sells on fashion sites Depop www.depop.com/martletshospice and Vinted www.vinted.co.uk. If you like to find those unique items, take a look at Martlets’ successful ebay store www.ebay.co.uk/usr/martletshospice It sells all kinds of collectibles, vintage items, antiques and even musical instruments. Spotted in-store – raised £1000’s online! An unusual find was recently discovered by eagleeyed volunteers Kate and Stephen at Martlets Peacehaven shop who recognised a donation of a highly collectable 1960s ‘Sasha’ doll.

Picture right: Sasha Doll

Please do take a look at Martlets online shops – you never know what you might find! Martlets is offering 20% off on all their sites from 1 -15 July. As always donations are gratefully received and directly help to raise money for local people living with terminal illness. Visit www.martlets.org.uk to see how and where to donate.

The team were hoping that it might achieve at auction somewhere around £250 although they couldn’t find an exact match.

(Aether Bios Clinic) Bridgeford’s Best Bites Osteopathy tips

Also known as adhesive capsulitis, contracted shoulder or pitcher’s arm, is an extremely painful condition where the shoulder is partially or completely stiff and unmovable, affecting your ability to carry out everyday activities such as bathing, dressing, driving and sleeping comfortably. It usually comes on gradually, gets worse over a number of months and may improve with time, though can take several years. It is most common between ages 40-60, particularly in women. Anatomy: The shoulder is a ball and socket joint; the end of the upper arm bone (humerus) sits in the socket of the shoulder blade (scapula). The lining of the shoulder joint, the capsule, is a flexible elastic structure allowing the shoulder’s huge range of motion. It is fully stretched when you raise your arm above your head and hangs down as a small pouch when the arm is lowered. In frozen shoulder this capsule and its ligaments becomes inflamed, swollen, thickened and contracted; normal elasticity is lost and there is less space for your upper arm bone in the joint. Pain and stiffness set in. The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles that control shoulder movements: supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, subscapularis. Symptoms: Can vary from mild with little effect on daily activities to severe and possibly unable to move the shoulder at all. Stage 1: Freezing, shoulder starts to ache and can be painful on reaching out; often worse at night laying on affected shoulder. Can last 2-9 months. Stage 2: Frozen, increasing stiffness, pain decreases, range of motion more limited. Shoulder muscles may waste from lack of use. Can last 4-12 months. Stage 3: Thawing, gradually regaining movement, though not fully, pain reduces and able to do more tasks. Can last 12-42 months.

Risk factors include breast cancer, diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, stroke, thyroid disease, recent shoulder injury, fracture or surgery, lack of use, Dupuytrens contracture. Diagnosis: A medical practitioner will ask about symptoms and injuries that may have affected the shoulder, its effect on daily life and sleep, severity of pain and what affects pain; also related pains, other health conditions and medication you are taking. Examination of range of motion, moving shoulder in all directions compared with unaffected shoulder; pressure to parts of shoulder to determine where pain is most severe and what is causing it; look for swelling, bruising or muscle wasting. X-ray, ultrasound scan and MRI may be used to rule out other causes of pain such as rotator cuff tear or arthritis. Treatment: Physical therapy, pain killers, anti-inflammatories, corticosteroid injections, Arthroscopic Hydrodilatation under local anaesthetic: filling shoulder joint with fluid to break up scar tissue and free up the joint is more effective than simple injections, surgery: arthroscopic Capsular Release or Manipulation Under Anaesthetic. Osteopathic/Manual Management: Massage, manipulation, myofascial techniques on joint and soft tissues, stretching and strengthening, trigger point therapy, dry needling, strapping, home rehabilitation exercises, attention to postural and sleeping habits. YouTube Exercises Frozen Shoulder Stretches: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7ekGt-0YP8&t=178s Quick and Easy Exercises – Shoulder Relief: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llNFfSHXyMQ&t=17s

Causes: Each person’s symptoms and causes may be slightly different, making it difficult to say what has caused the problem. Exact cause is unknown; may be caused by inflammation of shoulder joint and surrounding capsule, may lead to thick scar-like tissue forming in the capsule making it tight and restricting movement of the joint. It can develop alongside calcific tendonitis: where small amounts of calcium are deposited in the tendons of the shoulder or rotator cuff tear. Walking & balance

Chris Odle Fitness, 07968 083655 www.chrisodlefitness.com National Academy of Sports Medicine, (NASM) Certified Personal Trainer (NASM) Level 3 Personal Training Certificate (UK)

Have you ever thought about how cool walking is?

How to practice balance

if you haven't thought much about that finely tuned coordination of walking, that means all of those mechanics are working almost entirely subconsciously to keep you upright and balanced. Balance is the ability of your body to maintain physical equilibrium, maintaining its centre of mass over its base of support. In other words, balance and a fully functioning vestibular sense is a vital reason that you can stand, walk and make any movements without falling to the ground.

First, practice as often as possible finding equilibrium by distributing your weight. Start easy and as you progress challenge yourself. For example, while you are sitting notice how your weight is distributed.

What is the vestibular system? The human body orients itself through three main systems. There is the visual system, vestibular system and proprioception. All are interconnected. The vestibular system is what primarily maintains your balance. Your vestibular sense is how your brain instantaneously detects micromovements of your body and automatically reacts and adapts. Typically, that entire process happens without your conscious brain having any idea. How it works

In a standing position, one easy measure of how you are balancing is the connection of your feet to the ground. Evaluating the bottom of your feet, is there more weight focused in certain areas more than others? To find a neutral standing position you should have your toes pointed forward and have three points of contact with the floor. There should be a slight internal rotation of the ankles to lift arches and corkscrew feet firmly into the floor with your weight evenly distributed. When you are more aware of how you are standing you can make adjustments. Once that is sorted challenge yourself by standing on one foot, then on unstable ground like grass or sand or cushions. As you practice you'll become finely tuned and be able to detect small shifts and correct them sooner. After a while, you want to get that feeling of a plumb line down the centre of your body while you are standing.

Vestibular organs are tiny, delicate and intricate organs within your inner ear. They detect micromotions of your head side to side, up and down, twisting and accelerating. With each of those different incoming signals, the brain sends corresponding outgoing signals for the body to make subconscious automatic adjustments. The Vestibulo-ocular reflex is one particular example. While you're walking, jogging or running, the vestibulo-ocular reflex is responsible for stabilising your eyeballs and subsequently your vision. The reflex automatically moves your eyeballs in equal but opposite movements of the rest of your body, so your vision isn't shaken while you move. This is the reason why you're able to read or make eye contact while you are moving. Proper functioning of this system is essential. The system functions like a muscle and to maintain optimal functioning, it must be trained, balance improves through practice.

We

Why it matters Challenging your balance will make you better trained for all environments and demands of daily life. The more you practice the less conscious brain processing is needed. What happens in the whole body, directly affects the brain. If the body is disoriented, the brain experiences the effects. If you have a good balance you are more likely to be psychologically calm and mentally focused. If you can recalibrate your centre easily you'll have to expend less energy and will free up brain capacity for other priorities in your life.

Peacehaven and Telscombe Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group Peacehaven and Telscombe design guides published Guidelines for Peacehaven and Telscombe to help developers, landowners and the Town Council understand the expectations on design for the area have been published by the Peacehaven and Telscombe Neighbourhood Plan (NDP) steering group. The area covers Peacehaven Town with its historic plotlands which form a large part of the residential development and the Meridian centre which is the main centre for the two towns. It also includes East Saltdean, Telscombe Cliffs and Telscombe Village, which is a conservation area with the oldest building having Norman origins. Character areas The guidelines have taken into account factors such as surroundings, street layout, mobility, nature and public spaces and have been divided into character areas such as the plotlands, coastal road and town centre. Plotlands and coastal road The guide will ensure that the plotlands retains its views to the sea and buildings must reflect the existing bungalows albeit with a more contemporary approach. Image below: Proposed street transformation of Coastal Plotlands and Plotlands character area.

The grid layout and green verges will be retained and types of housing have been suggested which reflect the character of the area. Proposals for the coastal road include an environment that prioritises pedestrians and cyclists, more spaces to interact and moving car parking to the rear of new buildings where possible. Town centre More flexible public spaces have been suggested as well as walking and cycling connections to the wider town and providing enough car parking without dominating the landscape. Other recommendations include rainwater harvesting, solar roof panels, green roofs and electric car charging points. The Design Guide will now be used to inform future development and will be used by developers and landowners to understand expectations and by community organisations as a way to promote community-backed development and to inform comments on planning applications. The full document can be accessed on the website, contact details are given at the bottom of the page.
