I am happy to announce that Cllr Claude Cheta will remain as The Mayor of Peacehaven for the time being. There is more information on page 35. There is a real need for food bank supplies at the moment, so if you can spare a bit there are places in local supermarkets to drop things into, or the Peacehaven Covid-19 group do regular drop offs, so would be happy to take them. There is also a crowd funding page for anyone wanting to make donations. Again information is available in the local news pages. On page 47 the Peacehaven and Telscombe Neighbourhood Development Plan Steering Group are asking you to complete a survey to get your thoughts on what residents would like to see happen to the Meridian Centre site. Please do voice your opinions and ideas, they may not all be put into action, but we need to be represented in full to have any chance to shape the future of our town. Advertisers are popping back into the magazine now but they really need your help to get back on their feet. So if you do need services, they are ready to help you with PPE and social distancing measures in hand. Remember we can get back to some normality as long as we are sensible and care what happens to each other. Please feel empowered to mention anything to our advertisers that you think is not being done. ean Views The Price Is Wrong? ....don’t shoot the salesman For the last 20 years the perception is that computer equipment has got cheaper year-onyear. The reality is rather different. Some years there have been reversals, but they come down 12 months later, unnoticed because most people update their systems on a three to five year cycle. In the lead up to lockdown businesses and individuals emptied the shops and warehouses of all the budget/mid-range PCs, Laptops and Printers. The Manufacturers are doing a top down replenishment. In other words, they have been making the higher specification models first (with their higher prices/bigger profits).

Taking Laptops as an example, the typical machine uses an Intel Celeron, Pentium or i3 Processor. The i5 versions are better machines but most consumers are not prepared to pay £100 to £150 extra. Currently most machines cost over £500, rather than £350 with a budget processor. How long will this last? Experience suggests it will take months to calm down, however, a couple of big deliveries from China/Vietnam could change the picture overnight. Only time will tell…….

Haven management update

WITH no date currently agreed when grassroots football can return, Peacehaven & Telscombe FC’s Director of Football Mark Shutt has been busy assembling his managers and coaching staff in preparation for the new campaign. Today we go through the senior teams and announce the people who will be taking up the key managerial roles for the new season. The first team remains the same with Mark Shutt as manager assisted by Dan Norwood and supported by Clive Blunt. There’s a change at under 23 level where Callum Wiltshire steps down as joint manager due to his personal time constraints and becomes player coach. Dan Norwood becomes joint manager with Dave Croydon for the new season. Norwood will take on the new role whilst remaining assistant first team manager.

He will be assisted by first team stalwart Jake Legrange who along with playing for the first team has for the previous two seasons been part of the successful Lewes FC under 18s coaching set up. The final member of the under 18s coaching team is Tim Maguire who is making the step up from managing at under 16 level. Last season the club fielded two teams at under 16 level and for this season Steve Davies will be the manager of a new side which has been entered into the Mid Sussex under 18 league. He will be assisted by James Banks for the new season. This team will comprise predominantly of under 17 players.

At the end of last season Jason Edwards took on the role as caretaker manager for the reserves, but he has decided not to continue in the role this season so the club is currently looking for a new manager for Peacehaven & Telscombe Reserves. For the club’s third team, Russ Hughes will continue in his role as player manager. Last season Jason Edwards ran the club’s successful under 18 side but for the new campaign he has decided not to continue. The new manager will be former first team player Frazer Massen (pictured) who has decided to retire from playing.

The Havens Coastal Community Service and The Silver Linings Project A Winning Team! The Havens coastal community (Saltdean to Seaford) has pulled together to help raise over £5000 for a local non-profit organisation to continue its work as lockdown continues to be eased in stages. The Silver Linings Project by the Havens Community Hub was picked as one of the winning entrants of the ‘Projects That Matter’ competition run by East Sussex County Council which offered match funding opportunities through the Crowdfunder platform. The project received a video message of praise and support from actor, Christopher Biggins.

Reward for Kempton House Day Centre Kempton House is a local day centre that runs a lunch club on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for over 55s in the local area. They offer a hot meal, dessert, tea and coffee for £5. They also run bingo, snooker and a chair exercise class plus other activities. Kempton House Day Centre was awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary services on the 2 June 2020. Sue Taylor-Hill, who leads the project said; we are very proud of this award and the work we do and would like to thank all past and present members, volunteers and trustees who made Kempton House what it is today. At present they are only able to cook for a small number of elderly people but are moving forward as they work on the building and garden. They are also looking for a new cook to work 9 hours per week cooking traditional dinners. Kempton House are looking forward to opening again in the future and are aiming to reopen in September.

SUSSEX ARMY CADETS CONGRATULATED ON ROYAL ENDORSEMENT A county-wide youth group has been congratulated by an armed forces champion for gaining royal endorsement as it receives the highest award given to local volunteers groups. As the elected Armed Forces Champion for Lewes District Council, Cllr Sharon Davy has joined the organisation’s Commandant, Colonel David Steele, in congratulating Sussex’s army cadets for their outstanding voluntary service. “This is a magnificent achievement for the Army Cadet Force and its Cadet Force Adult Volunteers”, says Cllr Davy, a Conservative member of Lewes District Council. “In the midst of the Covid-19 crisis, the achievement by the ACF is inspiring news and justly recognises the outstanding work done by these ambassadors in their own communities.” The accolade was created in 2002 to celebrate the anniversary of The Queen's Coronation and is viewed akin to an MBE for voluntary groups. It is ‘earned’ by continuously undertaking outstanding voluntary work that provides social, economic and environmental services for local communities whilst also recognising the organisations standing within those communities.

"Since becoming Lewes District's Armed Forces Champion and attending an award ceremony, I have learnt more about the cadets and been deeply impressed”, adds Cllr Davy. “The cadets offer so many opportunities for our young people: they have played their part and are deserving of this wonderful distinction. “I have asked Lewes District Council to play a more supportive role in raising the profile of all our cadets and the armed forces -- those in active service and veterans", said Cllr Davy. Sussex ACF has 820 cadets and 194 adult volunteers at 25 locations across Sussex. YOUR HELP IS NEEDED! It gives us great pleasure to announce that The Mayor of Peacehaven, Cllr Claude Cheta, raised just over £12,000 in support of his charity work during his 2019/20 term of office. This means that £2,500 will be awarded to each of the following charities: ● Chillax, Youth Centre – sited at the Evangelical Church Hall ● Community Transport Lewes Area (CTLA) ● Know Dementia – a wonderful group who organise activities and shows at Community House, Meridian Centre for those with Dementia ● Kempton House Day Centre – catering for vulnerable adults in Peacehaven and organising regular outings for their members During a recent Council meeting, it was resolved that Councillor Cheta should remain as Mayor of Peacehaven, until a new Mayor is elected when the Covid-19 emergency measures allow. The Mayor has decided, to make an immediate donation of £1,000 to the Seahaven Food Bank, which will be the only charity he will be supporting for the time being. The urgent need for supplies is vital for residents in Peacehaven and the surrounding areas. Cllr Cheta would like to express a plea for local people to support this charitable organisation which is based in Newhaven. There are various ways to do this, as follows: ● To donate tins, breakfast cereal, jams, spreads & toiletries direct to the Seahaven Food Bank at Denton Island, Newhaven ● To make a ‘GoFundMe’ donation via the SCDA, Seahaven Food Bank Facebook page ● A cheque made out to Peacehaven Town Council – Marked for the attention of the Mayor’s Charity Fund Seahaven Foodbank, also known as Newhaven Foodbank, provides food parcels to families and individuals in the coastal areas. The falloff in food donations caused by the Covid-19 crisis and the jump in demand means that the service has had to start buying food and other essential products. This, together with the need to move to a delivery model and the widening of the geographical area served, has increased costs significantly. A financial donation will enable supplies to be purchased and distributed to those who are struggling and vulnerable. A food parcel for an individual for one-week costs £14, or £18 with toiletries. (Aether Bios Clinic) Bridgeford’s Best Bites: Osteopathy Tips - Sciatica - Simply Sciatica is a common and often debilitating type of pain caused by compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve. There are several causes of this irritation, each causing a variety of symptoms and a different severity of pain; each of these causes may require a different type of handling, treatment and exercises. Have you ever had sciatica? You will know how painful and all-consuming it can be! The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body, being almost as thick as your little finger; going from the pelvis, through the buttocks, down the legs to the feet. There are two, each exiting either side of the spine between the 4�� and 5�� lumbar vertebrae just above the pelvis, joining with branches from the 1�� - 3�� sacral segments, the triangular bone in the pelvis at the base of the spine. After leaving the pelvis it passes through the buttocks and travels down the back of the leg to the knee where it divides into 2 branches; the tibial nerve that travels down the back of the calf to the foot and the common peroneal nerve that travels down the front and side of the calf into the foot. Muscles that receive motor input, i.e. about how to work, from the sciatic nerve are in the posterior thigh; the hamstrings and hamstring portion of the adductors. Divisions of the nerve indirectly innervate all the muscles of the leg and foot. The sciatic nerve passes under the piriformis muscle and rarely through it! Skin receiving indirect sensory (feeling) innervation is the back and side of the leg, the side, sole and top of the foot. Common Symptoms are pain, burning, tingling or numbness radiating down the leg or foot. Pain can also be from tight tense muscles that are part of the symptom or could also be part of the cause. The pain may be felt all along the path of the nerve or may skip parts and just be felt in the foot or calf. Often the nerve pain in the leg may mask any feeling of pain in the back. Serious Causes need medical diagnosis and/or treatment. ● Loss of bladder or bowel control need urgent attention ● Progressive weakness in the lower limb, i.e. foot drop where you cannot lift your foot ● Disc herniation where the disc swells and bulges pressing on nerves ● Disc prolapse where the middle part of the disc, the nucleus pulposus bulges through the outer ring of the disc ● Stenosis, narrowing of the spinal canal from a variety of causes

Less Serious Causes can also be debilitating and vary in intensity. Common causes can be from postural imbalances, particularly from prolonged sitting or desk work with poor ergonomics; especially combined with a lack of proper/ appropriate exercise. Couches are responsible for many back problems as they may not support your posture well and often encourage slouching. Myofascial imbalances, muscle spasms, minor accidents or injuries, inflammation, and postural/biomechanical changes, such as those in pregnancy can all cause sciatica. Exercises with disc problems, can depend on where the bulge is as to the exercise needed/tolerated. Many disc problems occur from bending forwards, e.g. lifting. In these cases, forward bending exercises can aggravate and what is needed is more strengthening and lengthening towards gentle backward bending. This is particularly true where you are unable to sit down. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0O_SHJAO6c shows some simple sciatica stretches. The muscles along the entire nerve pathway as well as the back will need stretching and strengthening at some stage of recovery. Coming soon is another simple video of stretches and strengthening exercises for sciatica where you can bend forwards; including stretches all related muscles along the nerve pathway. Osteopathic Management Studies are conflicting regarding preferred management. Manipulative therapy showed useful for back pain though not always for sciatica. Targeted exercise and stretching can be helpful; bed rest is not helpful and staying active and strong is important in the long term; though debilitating pain of acute sciatica can make it difficult to exercise.
