Martlets on the Move to Maycroft Manor as Hospice Rebuild Begins Hospice re-sites to award-winning care home as multi-million-pound upgrade of Hove site begins Martlets, the much-loved hospice care charity for Brighton and Hove, is spreading its wings with a major £10 m rebuild of its hospice site at Wayfield Avenue in Hove. Sunninghill Contractors start work on the rebuild at the end of May, with the new hospice set to re-open in 18 months’ time. During this time, Martlets will temporarily relocate to a private wing at award-winning care home Maycroft Manor in Brighton. This year sees Martlets celebrate its 25�� anniversary; the hospice opened in 1997 and has supported more than 34,000 local people since then. The charity is now looking to the future and creating a modern and welcoming new space which will help it reach more people facing death, dying and bereavement. The new hospice will allow Martlets to care for even more people as outpatients and accommodate up to 14 patients in self-contained, accessible rooms which will open onto their own garden spaces. All patient rooms will have ensuite facilities to ensure privacy and dignity, and the building will be designed to manage the challenges presented by a future pandemic.
While the rebuild takes place Martlets will temporarily move its inpatient unit to a private wing at Maycroft Manor, a highly rated care home on Carden Avenue in Brighton. Every patient will have a private, ensuite room, and will be cared for exclusively by Martlets’ expert staff. Maycroft Manor Care Home is part of Hallmark Care Homes, which is an established, family-run care provider that has three CQC rated ‘Outstanding’ homes in its portfolio. It too is celebrating 25 years of care and since opening its first home in 1997, the group has won 100 awards in that time. Martlets had been planning to improve its IPU and community services’ spaces for some years, but the COVID-19 pandemic brought this plan into even sharper focus. The pandemic highlighted the need to rebuild the hospice with modern facilities to enable better infection control, greater privacy for patients and visitors, and enhanced choice, comfort and care. (Aether Bios Clinic) Bridgeford’s Best Bites Osteopathy Tips PLANTAR FASCIITIS Also known as Plantar Fasciopathy, Policeman's Heal, or Runner's Heel; thickening of the plantar fascia, one of the most common causes of heel pain, is estimated to affect 10% of the general population. Thickening can be due to recent damage or injury, or an accumulation of smaller injuries over the years. It can be extremely painful and once chronic it can prove difficult to treat successfully. Other pathologic disorders can mimic the symptoms and clinical presentation of this disorder. Anatomy: The plantar fascia is the thick, broad band of connective tissue supporting the arch underneath the sole of the foot. Its elastic, collagen fibres run from the calcaneum (heel bone) forward to the heads of the metatarsal bones, which join the toes to the mid-foot. It has a critical role in the normal mechanical function of the foot, undergoing tension during weight-bearing and elongating in the contact phase of gait (walking). It is closely related to the Achilles tendon, which joins the gastrocnemius (calf) muscle to the heel and is important in proprioception and motor coordination. Symptoms: Pain in the bottom of the foot, especially on the heel bone. It is generally worse first thing in the morning, when standing up after long sitting, and when standing or walking, particularly in unsupportive shoes. Causes: Repetitive strain on the fascia from a new form of exercise or sudden increase in the intensity of exercise, especially high impact; longdistance runners using tartan (synthetic all-weather) track more than 25% of the time; regularly standing for several hours; a change in shoes, i.e. suddenly switching from regular high-heels to flats; wearing shoes with weak arch supports and thin soles. Having flat feet or very high arches, uneven leg length, unusual foot position or tight Achilles tendon; being overweight. Medical conditions such as systemic lupus erythematosus or rheumatoid arthritis. Diagnosis:
Gluten Sensitivity: musculoskeletal problems can be related. Treatment: Medical interventions include anti-inflammatory pain medication, ultrasound, steroid injections, and surgery after 6 months of failed conservative treatments. Orthotics (insoles), stretching, taping, dry needling based on myofascial meridians, and manual therapy are also helpful. Injections: Corticosteroid more effective when guided by ultrasound than palpation; associated with increased risk of plantar fascia rupture; needs further research. Platelet-rich plasma more effective and durable than cortisone in chronic recalcitrant cases. Intramuscular botulinum toxin (Botox) in gastroc-soleus (calf) muscles with plantar fascia stretching exercises better than corticosteroid. Hyaluronan into fascia, due to its high concentration of hyaluronan. Cryoultrasound Therapy: could be efficient for chronic cases. Shock Wave Therapy: a safe, effective treatment for plantar fasciitis and chronic pain symptoms. More effective when combined for plantar fasciitis and gastroc-soleus (calf muscle) trigger points; more research is needed. Radiofrequency: into plantar fascia during endoscopy can be a satisfactory treatment. Radiofrequency calcaneal nerve ablation was effective for chronic pain associated with plantar fasciitis that did not respond to other conservative treatment. Surgery: fasciotomy (percutaneous latticed plantar) minimally invasive clinic procedure under local anaesthetic. Isolated proximal medial gastrocnemius (calf muscle) release is a simple, reliable procedure, providing far better results than conventional partial proximal fasciotomy). Osteopathic/Manual Management: Adjusting feet and ankle bones, soft tissue and myofascial techniques, stretching, dry needling, taping, orthotics, home rehabilitation exercises; attention to back and neck due to effects of long-term limping. Remedial Exercises
Based on medical history, symptoms, examination, and pressing on the sole of the foot. Shear wave elastography shows (stiffness) elasticity of the plantar fascia, which decreases with age (thickness increases) and in patients with plantar fasciitis.

Cycle Seahaven Cycle Seahaven is a friendly and inclusive social cycling club based in the Seahaven area of East Sussex (Seaford, Newhaven and Peacehaven). Our location provides easy access to many miles of beautiful heritage downland, low traffic roads and cycle friendly cafés, and ride leaders have an extensive knowledge of routes for all abilities and an unrivalled talent for sniffing out the best establishments for coffee and cake! It was a stormy sky when Cycle Seahaven’s WOW group (Women On Wheels) recently set off on a ride over the South Downs but they made it to the top! A well-earned refreshment stop was taken at Beanstalk Cafe located in a beautiful setting between Firle Bostal and Bo-Peep Bostal along the Old Coach Road. Plenty of chat, laughter and good banter ending with icecreams, and even avoided the rain.
