Welcome Page Welcome to the May edition! I wish it were under better circumstances but as with everyone we are just trying be at home and get through this. In light of this situation we thought it prudent for both our advertisers, who are not getting work at the moment, and the safety of residents that we move on-line for the time being. Please help an elderly friend or relative to access this magazine if they can’t as I know a lot of them look forward to their monthly publication. James Bryan - Local photographer in the area kindly gave us permission to use this photo he took of Peacehaven cliffs. The future is so uncertain at the moment but I have been watching the most marvellous thing and that is co-operation and kindness. Not just the NHS and the food services hat have stepped up the the mark in Peacehaven but people like the Covid19 group who have been working around the clock to provide assistance to anyone in isolation, Kempton House is still making sure the elderly get meals and the CTLA have been assisting that and other agencies in the same work. There is a call to arms to try and help the Seaford food bank as it struggles not only with the increase of demand but also due to donations drying up. This is the one that Peacehaven residents can avail themselves of too! Our council have tried to help as many of us as they can, their daily on-line briefings are informative. I have been enjoying my daily walks with the dog and have really appreciated the wave, smile and courteous behaviour of others as we have tried to social distance as best we can. On a brighter note the VE Day celebrations are being celebrated in a very unique way this year, so take a look at the Council website and the Peacehaven Players are doing a special radio like performance, see page 34 for this fundraising extravaganza for the NHS. I hope this is over soon and when it is, our businesses are going to need your support more than ever. The majority of them are in the same boat as us and not eligible for the governmental business help schemes. If you have lost loved ones to this virus then my thoughts are very much with you. Stay safe. Anne Briffett (Editor) June edition deadline is: 25 May 2020. The magazine can also be viewed on Facebook and our website www.peacehavendirectory.co.uk. ean Views Is there anyone there? ....Or am I talking to myself again? Welcome to this Digital-Only-Collectors-Edition. Normally I can sit and fret all day coming up with an article for my regular fanbase (which regularly nudges double figures). It feels very strange composing an article that only the proof reader might read. (I hope you enjoy this Anne….)

LOCAL BUSINESS

By Bruce Cameron-Stuart

Working from home has peaked with Jamie Oliver filming a daily cookery programme using two GoPro fixed cameras and an iPhone. The raw footage is emailed on to the production team in their individual homes to have sound, graphics, music and archive footage added. Next day it is transmitted on Channel 4.

On my occasional visits to the outside world I feel slightly uncomfortable about seeing the risks As the Lockdown plods on I have been fascinated people in shops, bus drivers, delivery drivers run how so many businesses are still chugging along. Yesterday I spoke to a Doctor’s Surgery, POD, Terra with minimal protection so the rest of us can STAY Computers and an electric toilet wholesaler (don’t HOME. I for one appreciate their contribution to our wellbeing. THANK YOU. ask). Every one was working from home on a laptop, with their main switchboard seamlessly forwarding the calls. A decade ago, the technology to allow us to carry on working from home was rather flaky, now it runs amazingly well.

Pitchside View

What a season it may have been! WITH the 2019/20 season officially over this is the season that has left fans of many clubs around the By Pitchside View

country wondering, what if? And this includes fans of Peacehaven & Telscombe FC who can only wonder what might have been if the season had been able to conclude in the traditional way

The under 23s were in fourth place in their league and in the semi-final of the county under 23 cup when time was called.

Above all, what is paramount is the safety and wellbeing of our population as we all fight this dreadful threat. Sport is important, but life is far more precious.

The reserves were fourth place in the Mid Sussex Championship, while the third team looked like they had made seventh spot their own in the Mid Sussex League Division Three South. Meanwhile the under 18s were on the verge of clinching their league title and were nine points ahead when the season was called to a halt.

So with the Coronavirus situation firmly in mind and in no way trivialising this dreadful menace which has taken away our freedom and liberty, this month we take a look at the past season. And of course the youngsters who make up the club’s 22 youth teams should all be congratulated along with their Peacehaven & Telscombe FC are still the holders of the parents and coaches who turn out in all weathers to RUR Cup won in May 2019 (pictured) and will continue support and help run these crucial and important teams to be the holders for the time being and perhaps for the which form the bedrock of the Peacehaven & Telscombe next 12 months. FC football family. Peacehaven were just 24 hours away from contesting the 2020 RUR Cup final against Eastbourne Town when a halt was called to the season. Mark Shutt’s men also were scheduled to play their semi-final match in the Peter Bentley Cup against AFC Uckfield on April 9 with a final against Lancing awaiting the winners. In the league Peacehaven had half an eye on finishing in second spot and promotion. When the last ball was kicked, Haven were in fifth place. Peacehaven did have a certain amount of destiny in their own hands as they still had to play fourth placed Newhaven, second place Eastbourne Town and the last game of the season away to table-toppers Lancing. And what a run in the Sussex Senior Cup the team had narrowly losing to National League South Eastbourne Borough in the semi-final when they went out 5-4 on penalties. Peacehaven nearly caused the biggest Senior Cup upset for years.

SCDA works across East Sussex delivering community based Services aimed at addressing the needs of the most vulnerable in the community. At the moment the biggest issue is the Newhaven Seahaven Food Bank. Support Seahaven Food bank Seahaven Foodbank, also known as Newhaven Food bank, provides food parcels to families and individuals in Newhaven, Sussex and the surrounding areas. The fall off in food donations caused by the Covid-19 crisis and the jump in demand that we have seen for the service has meant that we have had to start buying food and other essential products. This together with the need to move to a delivery model and the widening of the geographical area served, has increased our costs significantly. A food parcel for an individual for one week costs £14 or £18 with toiletries. All donations will go directly to purchasing items for food parcels. See www.sussexcommunityorg.uk for more information. If you cannot afford food, you may be eligible for help from your local food bank: You will need a ‘food bank voucher’ to use the service. These vouchers are issued by agencies that are able to assess people’s circumstances and need for support. They include Citizens Advice, Housing Support Officers, Children’s Centres, Health Visitors, Social Services and some local charities.

31 (Aether Bios Clinic) Bridgeford’s Best Bites: Osteopathy Tips TAKING IT ONLINE – TIPS TO MAINTAIN BALANCE In this unprecedented time most of us have taken to sharing our skills online or joining in with skills/classes that others are sharing. This is a wonderful opportunity to connect, learn and share and can also be challenging in many ways for everyone. I have a few tips for making it easier and hopefully allowing us all to be as kind and considerate of others as possible. Setting up in Zoom: Connecting – Getting In Due to a few people hacking zoom sessions and causing disruption, zoom is regularly updating security measures for attending sessions safely. This means that just about every week there are changes to deal with. Currently it is necessary to register to attend a class each time (even if it is recurring) then receive an ID and Password to be able to attend; currently the same ID/password works for the recurring classes. Tip: It is essential to do this registration ahead of time to give the host time to send you the connection details. Visual - Being seen: If you are attending a zoom session you will only see what your picture is like once you have joined the session. This can be time consuming and people can get flustered working to get it setup correctly to be seen properly, while others are ready and waiting. In a desk type consultation, it is usually fine to just see each other from the waist up, whereas in a movement session it is important that the teacher can see you fully standing, sitting, and even laying down. How to achieve this depends on the size of your space, what type of device you are connecting with and the height you place it at. Tip: In zoom, it is a good idea to start your own free session at zoom.us so you can see what your picture looks like on the screen ahead of joining a class and make necessary adjustments. You may need to raise your device up to get a good picture of yourself; if this means that you can no longer see the screen (teacher and others) then perhaps consider joining twice, once on a device you can be seen on and one you can see

on, e.g. an iPad and a phone or phone and laptop. Just may need to tell the host so they recognise you both as you join the session. Audio - Being heard: Like being seen, you can check this on your own session. The etiquette in a session is different depending on the session and what the host decides. I generally like to keep my students active on audio so that we can interact and just switch to muting everyone when we go to relaxation or meditation. Tip: It is good etiquette to mute yourself if there is noise in the background like dogs barking, washing up, or other noise that could be disruptive. Be aware that if you have muted yourself, the host cannot un-mute you. Bandwidth – Staying connected: This is mostly out of our control as hosts or participants. Tip: Be aware that if others in the household use the Internet or join a zoom session, you may drop out of yours! Taking Care of your Body: Spending more time at the computer and online can have an impact on our posture, particularly backs, necks and wrists and cause visual strain and headaches. We are also at risk of becoming over enthusiastic with too many or unaccustomed classes causing strain in places we did not imagine before! Tip: Include some postural and body classes as well as rest and exercise in your daily routine. Online Osteopathy consultations and I am open in clinic for emergency /urgent cases. NLP and Hypnotherapy coaching sessions online coming soon See the page opposite for all our zoom exercise classes for the week We are happy to advise you on your health matters and happy to create exercise videos on Aether Bios YouTube channel.

Recipe Ideas Anyone struggling with what to make meal wise? Here are some of the recipes ideas I have found to cope with a reduced wage and sometimes limited ingredients. I love pasta, it is cheep and easy to prepare but sometimes a tomato sauce is just not what you want. I didn’t have milk at the time and wondered if I could use yoghurt? This is what I found‌ Yoghurt sauce: apparently this is a Greek inspired sauce and is very gentle on your stomach, you can add as little or as much garlic as you want or you can leave it out all together. Grind the garlic down until you have a fine paste. (I do not have a Pestle and mortar and found the end of a rolling pin worked and a ramekin dish.) Put some yoghurt into a small pan, for one person I used 2 to 3 tablespoons. Add some water and heat very gently. (If you heat too much you can curdle it.) I then added the garlic and I used a little salt and pepper. Mix this in with the pasta. After I flaked some salmon and added some peas, but you can adapt this and use any combination of food that suits your taste and diet. You could also add herbs or spices. Really nice if you are not feeling quite the ticket!

Healthy Flatbreads Handy if you can’t get bread Can be made into a Pizza Ingredients (8oz/225g) full fat natural plain yogurt (or Greek yogurt) (5oz/142g) all-purpose flour* 2 teaspoons baking powder Salt to taste Instructions: In a large bowl combine the flour and baking powder. Next, add in the yogurt and mix with a spatula until the yogurt has absorbed the flour. Use your hands to bring the dough together. Nb: you may not need all of the yogurt. Once the dough is formed place it on a floured surface. Divide the dough into 6 balls. Roll each one as thinly as possible as this will ensure the bread cooks evenly on both sides with nice air bubbles in between. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. melt some butter, brush one side of the rolled dough with the butter place it in the pan. Allow the bread to toast and bubble up cooking for about 2-3 minutes on each side. 33 Peacehaven Players Moves Online for their Summer Show Peacehaven Players will present the comedy “Fly Me! The Radio Play” on their YouTube Channel at the end of May. Listeners will be asked to donate to an NHS fund instead of purchasing a ticket. Peacehaven Players will present an audio play this summer. “Fly Me! The Radio Play” will be released on YouTube at the end of May. In response to the Covid-19 lockdown The Players are rehearsing and recording the play via telephone conference. They are asking listeners to donate to the NHS instead of buying tickets.

Some members will be recreating their original roles. Rehearsals each Thursday are suspended at 8:00 pm for 10 minutes to clap the heroes of the NHS. The Players have decided to dedicate the play to the NHS and to ask listeners to donate to an NHS fund. This can be found at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/matt-shooman

Along with other theatre companies, Peacehaven Players had to abandon its planned summer show. This thriving company was keen to keep the creative spark alive even though face to face collaboration was not possible during the Covid-19 lockdown. Telephone conferencing provided the solution. No fancy equipment required, just a landline or smart phone. Auditions were recorded at home and rehearsals are by telephone.

Peacehaven Players was established in 1997 for amateur actors and singers in Peacehaven, Telscombe Cliffs and the surrounding area. Since then they have presented at least two shows a year at the Meridian Centre in Peacehaven. This year will be the first time a production will be presented online.

Judith Foot, local playwright and Players member generously agreed to adapt her witty comedy Fly Me! as a radio play. Peacehaven Players originally staged “Fly Me!” as a musical in 2014. For copyright reasons no songs are included in this version. It tells the story of a group of holiday makers visiting Torremolinos. The play will be aired on the Players’ YouTube Channel at the end of May. The new cast includes not just current Players but also some of their family members.
