Welcome to the May edition. The Front cover page has been very kindly supplied by Colette Langton of Colette Langton Photography. Colette has provided us with a picture of a lovely blossom arch, taken whilst on a walk at the back of Peacehaven, close to Halcombe Farm.

Contents

The health and safety officers have been busy over the last few weeks contacting businesses to make sure that they can operate safely and within government guidelines. The phone call that the other business I am involved with, in the town of Brighton, took was extensive and they were warned that there would be spot checks. I think this is worth remembering when entering premises. If masks are not worn and distancing, etc is not adhered to then those places could get into trouble and face fines or worse. Whatever you think of the current circumstances I am sure our businesses throughout East Sussex would be grateful for that last stretch of co-operation from the public.

More new advertisers have taken up space in the magazine, so please do keep it local if you need services, there are plenty of each category to get quotes from to find the best price right here. The community side is cautiously opening up and there are a lot of articles and information for you to look at. If you are part of a group that is opening up soon, I would love to get the 'Whats on' pages back up and running. My garden is very busy at the moment with nesting birds and a lot of courting and wonderful song can be experienced. I would like to thank Elaine our mobile hairdresser on the front cover, who gave me a wonderful and much needed hair cut over the weekend. I feel a lot better. Enjoy the month of May and all that nature has to offer. Anne - Editor

ean Views ....a pleasant surprise After recently investing time and money importing a newly refurbished cassette deck from Germany, I had a crisis of confidence: What if doesn’t work? What if the tapes are duds? What if I can’t calibrate the recordings properly? What if it is a complete waste of money? To answer in sequence: it worked brilliantly; the tapes were fine? There is a single button that does this automatically; no. The hardest bit was not to leave l-o-n-g gaps between tracks. With repetition I improved. As others have said, if the world knew how good cassettes were at the end, we would still be using them. The noisy mechanisms, the background hiss and compressed sound have disappeared. There is a slight flattening of snare sounds and a soft warm bass. I would point out to anyone tempted to go back to tape.

By Bruce Cameron-Stuart

Two problems: few modern amplifiers have a line out – otherwise the recorder has no sound coming in; the number of “old as new” tapes are depleted after lockdown. Type I (Ferric) tapes are fine, few Type II (Chrome) are getting expensive and Type III (Metal) are £50-ish. No matter how expensive the tapes, the deck is the constraint. A decent late model will draw remarkable results from any Ferric tape from TDK, Sony or BASF. Back to business… What can follow “Tainted Love”?….

A Message from Jamie Howell - Penrose Wills Dear Peacehaven Directory readers. I am the Managing Director of Penrose Wills Limited. We are members of The Society of Will Writers and are able to deal with your Will and Lasting Power of Attorney instructions from start to finish, yet at highly competitive prices. Anyone with assets should have a Will. Without a Will, the state will decide who inherits your assets under the law of intestacy, not you. How Penrose Wills can help At Penrose Wills, we are able to make the process of making your Will hassle free: • We are able to visit you in the comfort of your own home, OR… • We can arrange a video appointment with you on a daytime, evening or weekend that suits you. • You will be met by one of our experienced estate planners, who will deal with your Will instructions from start to finish and provide you with expert advice throughout. Why should I make a Will? If you are single you might want your estate divided amongst friends, relatives and charities of your choosing and in the proportions you want. If you are married, don’t assume “my other half will get everything”. Brothers, sisters or parents may have a claim. Often your children have a right to part of your estate too. If you are retired, maybe you made a Will a long time ago. It probably needs updating to include additional grandchildren or deletion of persons you no longer feel you want to benefit. If you are living with your partner but are not officially married, you may be treated as a single person and a surviving partner may get nothing at all. If you are a parent you should consider who you would like to look after your children in the event of your death by appointing a guardian in your Will. This is particularly important in the case of single parent families or unmarried parents living together. If you have not appointed a guardian in your Will, then the court will decide on the future of your children.

see the on-line magazine at www.peacehavendirectory.co.uk or

If you are entering into a second marriage and have children from a previous relationship in order to ensure your children’s inheritance is protected on your death, it is essential to make a Will and seek legal advice. Not doing so could result in your new spouse receiving all or the majority of your estate on your death and your children with nothing. At Penrose Wills, we are able to create a Trust in your Will(s) to protect your share of your estate, so that it will pass to your children. If you want to leave a legacy to charity your Will is an opportunity to provide a legacy for the cause or causes you care most about. Around 15% of income generated by charities in the UK comes from legacies left in Wills and at Penrose Wills, we are passionate about working with charities and individuals alike to ensure that legacies can be gifted by Will and charities can flourish. If I can assist in any way, please feel free to give me a call on 01323 893 245 or email me at jamie@penrosewills.co.uk I look forward to speaking with you soon.

Community A New Community Venture in Peacehaven Supermarket Peacehaven Community Supermarket is a weekly pop up shop, which runs as a membership scheme. It operates on the principle that everyone should have access to healthy, affordable food, close to home. Members have access to food and essential household items, and members are invited to contribute on a ‘pay as you feel’ basis, based on what they can afford. This project is a joint venture between Sussex Community Development Association (SCDA) and Kempton House Day Centre.

Sustainable Solution

Community Supermarkets are a sustainable, long-term, community-focused solution to food insecurity. The aim is to help people move beyond food bank use, or to help reduce a family’s need for a food bank, whilst also reducing food waste and connecting local residents. We already have over thirty members and the feedback so far has been great. Peacehaven Community Supermarket is open every Thursday from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm at Kempton House Day Centre and anyone who would like join as a member should call 01273 516032 or email food@sussexcommunity.org.uk for more information.

Reduce food waste

Feel confident

Brighter times for our Community We are looking forward to welcoming our clubs and community groups back at some point in 2021. If you have any online activities you would like people to know about, and join in with, we are more than happy to place that information for you. Do let us know as soon as you start up again and I will get the ‘what’s on page’ up and running. see the on-line magazine at www.peacehavendirectory.co.uk or

CYCLE SEAHAVEN NEWS Cycling Changed My Life It’s been five years since I first signed up as a member of Cycle Seahaven and started following the club on Facebook when I noticed that they were putting on Beginners Rides. So I dusted off my aged bike and with some intrepidation, cycled to the meeting point for the Beginners Ride where I was warmly welcomed by ride leaders, Paul and Roger and we set off on my first cycle in decades. At the time I didn’t realise what a life changing day that was to be and that my focus on Sunday mornings would never be the same again. I returned home so elated that I then recruited friends to join me on the next Beginners Ride.

Over the years my usual position on a club ride has been ‘Tail End Charlie’ bringing up the rear but somebody has to do it!! So five years and two bikes later, and many miles cycled, I've been encouraged and supported throughout by ride leaders, all with endless patience just wishing to share their passion for cycling. I’ve always loved walking on our beautiful South Downs but through Cycle Seahaven I’ve learned of many cycle routes away from our busy roads which has enabled me to enjoy even more of the beautiful countryside we have right on our door step plus I can now confidently cycle on the road when absolutely necessary!

I’ve been reflecting on my cycling journey with the club having recently cycled over 360 miles during March as part of a Cycle Seahaven challenge to get us all back out on our bikes after the long winter and lockdown. Five years ago I could never have imagined myself, now 63 years old, being able to cycle so many miles, mostly off road and at the moment still on a manual bike although I definitely have my eye on an e-bike in the not too distant future!

Most important, I’ve made many friends and am probably physically and mentally more fit than I have ever been thanks to being a member of Cycle Seahaven. So I thank everyone involved in running this incredibly friendly, fun and successful club and suggest that you dust off your bike, take it to Cycle Seahaven’s Dr Bike if it is in need of repair and give cycling a go as you too may never look back. Peacehaven and Telscombe Neighbourhood Development Plan May update The Neighbourhood Plan is a vision for Peacehaven and Telscombe towns to provide a good quality of life for all residents and an environment which is sustainable with clean air. The start of 2021 has been dominated by the proposed redevelopment of the Meridian Site and two surveys have taken place asking for public feedback. The first was undertaken by the Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group on the Masterplan and closed at the end of January. This was a only a concept of what could be achieved within the constraints of Lewes District Council’s imposed housing targets which the town has no choice but to accommodate. From the AECOM Masterplan concept consultation feedback we learnt that there was anxiety about the scale of housing in the plan and great concern that the number of shops included was insufficient for a district shopping centre. Pedestrian shopping areas, squares and new public space (including room for street markets and socialising) were considered important. The owners of the Meridian Centre are still Co-op Properties and they (with their preferred developers HDD) have undertaken their own survey which will inform any planning application they choose to make. This survey closed on 5 April. The Neighbourhood Plan is concerned with making the best use of the land within Telscombe and Peacehaven - by allocating sites for development there is a chance to have some local control on where homes are built in the future. see the on-line magazine at www.peacehavendirectory.co.uk or

Maintaining and protecting local green spaces, parks and recreational facilities (including new ‘pocket parks’) and creating alternatives to travelling on the congested A259 are some of the projects being worked on which will benefit residents and the environment. With continuing support and co-operation from Peacehaven and Telscombe Town Councils the vision will be achieved. A group of local residents, Councillors and consultants have been working in the background for several years to get the Neighbourhood Plan to this point, most of them on a voluntary basis and bids for Government/grant funding have been successful to cover the cost of essential fees. A huge amount of work has been done at minimal cost to the two local town councils. (Aether Bios Clinic) Bridgeford’s Best Bites Osteopathy tips THE POWER OF LISTENING TO YOUR BODY FOR BETTER RECOVERY AND MOBILITY Probably the most important thing you can do towards improving your health and well being overall is to learn the art of listening to your body - it is the boss after all! This is the one main overriding factor that I notice makes all the difference to recovery and maintaining mobility alongside treatment, particularly with long term and less easy issues. People with long term issues, even some that can look pretty serious on MRI, often start to make the best use of their treatment and gain more freedom in their bodies when they learn this simple lesson. I have seen people start to do things that I didn’t even think they were ready to do…yet. This is no airy-fairy thing, nor is it second nature to many people. It is simple, though often less than easy! So how do we learn to do this? Alongside treatment, including related exercises there is always an element of learning and coaching and increasing self-awareness and self-discovery. We all hold beliefs about ourselves, who we are and how we behave that makes us…us! Sometimes these beliefs can interfere with our recovery. Experience is an essential part of learning and when we experience something for ourselves, we are more able to own it and embody it. For example: If you are ‘the kind of person’ who ‘mucks in and helps to get things done’ this can be an admirable quality, though is less helpful if you have a back problem and your ‘mucking in’ involves heavy lifting or something else that causes you strain. You may have always done this and been mostly fine, or perhaps not even realised the impact it has on you, though when you realise and experience that this repeatedly puts your recovery backwards and your pain levels and incapacity higher then you can start to make some different choices. Perhaps ‘mucking in’ can become a different way of helping and organising and still maintain a sense of ‘the kind of person’ you are. Usually, the people you are helping would not like to think that this help is the cause of any added pain and incapacity for you. For example: If you believe that you can ‘push through’ any pain or issues you are also at risk of exacerbating your problems.

This ‘push through’ attitude can be useful in endurance sports and achievements when you are not injured; with injury this belief becomes counter-productive. If I were to ask you to put your hand up in front of you with your palm facing forwards and I pushed my palm against yours, the natural response of your body would be to push back. If we push the body, it pushes back – this is a natural response! In stretching or aiming to increase mobility in a joint, pushing will create a resistance in the body. Learning to go to the point where the body is still comfortable, breathe and ‘listen’ with an awareness of the body and gently invite the body to go further, this awareness and ‘listening’ will take you into more movement, more comfortably without causing resistance, when the body is ready and able. Making changes: Alerting someone to the fact that their belief and behaviour could be holding them back is only a starting point. Our behaviours and beliefs are usually well established over a long period of time. More evidence, often in the way of repeated suffering is usually necessary to help us recognise that we could be exacerbating our problems. Whenever we push ourselves too far, we know it. The trick is in learning to recognise before we go too far, push too far, do too much. This is an ongoing process as we are constantly changing. The body is truly amazing and is always doing its best with what it’s got. When we learn to listen to what it tells us and respect this and act accordingly, we become its ally in recovery and health. The ability to learn to listen BEFORE the body says NO has the potential of giving you so much added mobility and capability that it is worth every attention you give it. It is helpful to have someone guide and support you through this process – if it were easy and obvious – you would have done it already! I help many patients through this process in their own way, empowering them to increase awareness and make choices that support their health and well being in the longer term. It is a working together – you, your body and me. I am always delighted to see people regaining their lives through better health and movement. We are happy to advise you on your health matters.

Getting Outside Find your connection with the outside world Getting outside means connecting with the natural world. Everyone is different, I love the forest, others love the cliffs, some just love rolling hills. Whatever elicits a good emotional response in you is the place you should go. According to early research on Attention Restoration Theory (ART) that feeling of connection has key characteristics: Space: experiencing distance around you or being away from your normal surroundings. Find a change in scenery. Wonder: described as effortless attention to the environment around you, a curious observation of the world. Expansiveness: We spend so much time indoors and often attached to screens, our eyes need to get exercise to see far away and our bodies need the feeling of freedom. Love and Attraction: You need to feel an affinity with the things around you, it helps to build a connection with you and your surroundings, this then can help to be more aware and open to relationships with people. All of the above not only feeds your body but also your soul/spirit or whatever you identify this as. It is important for the mental as well as the physical side of you. How much time is enough: Research from 2019 found that health peaked at 200-300 minutes per week spent outdoors. This equates to about 30 minutes a day. The study also showed that there weren’t additional benefits beyond this threshold, but this may depend on you as an individual. Another study talks about the ‘3-day syndrome’. It suggests that there are increasing benefits to more time spent in nature, especially after 3 full days. If you feel you do not manage that, and a lot of us who work do not. Set small targets for progress, even if you increase time outdoors by only a few minutes you’re winning. As always, find what works for you.

The modern world disconnects us: Technology and industrialisation can make us extremely comfortable. They can provide protection, help us to do things faster, be more successful and have more entertainment at our fingertips. They can also disconnect us from people and our surroundings and make us extremely uncomfortable, not to mention the effects they can have on our bodies. It has got to the point where a lot of us need artificial sound and light of nature to enable us to sleep or to wake in the morning and improve our moods. Soil degradation and extensive food processing mean that the food we consume is less nutritionally rich than food that is grown and distributed locally. City planning has made driving solo the easiest mode of transport, but dependence on driving for commuting has big effects on our lifestyles. It reduces the opportunity for exercise disconnecting us from our bodies, others and nature. These modern barriers to the natural world have real physical, emotional and psychological effects on us. This does not mean that we are doomed to live sad and deficient lives. It does mean that we have to try a little harder to find a connection to nature. Humans love nature: As humans, there are a lot of things that should be in synergy with us. We are innately drawn to the things that give us energy and life. This was the hypothesis of the worldleading biologist E. O. Wilson, he called this Biophilia and is the idea that we have an urge to affiliate with other forms of life. Feeling connected to nature is comforting. Specific benefits include lower stress, lower blood pressure, improve immune system function, increase self-esteem, reduce anxiety and improve mood. So what are you waiting for?

Peacehaven ... Are you Ready to Liven up your Lounges? Martlets Celebrates Re-Opening all Seven Charity Shops on 12 April. From Peacehaven to Hove, Martlets stores re-open for shopping and donations Martlets is celebrating the re-opening of all seven of its charity shops as lockdown restrictions eased on 12 April. Over the past 12 months, Martlets’ charity shops have had to close during government lockdowns and all organised fundraising events were cancelled - while the need for its hospice care and support has been greater than ever. The re-opening of all Martlets shops from Peacehaven to Hove is an opportunity to grab some bargains, donate quality items that have been taking up space and to support an important local charity. Rob Parker, Martlets Area Sales Manager commented: “We have been working hard to ensure that we are able to keep customers and our staff and volunteers safe in our shops and are now really looking forward to welcoming everyone back. Our charity shops are an important part of community life across our area and we have many regulars and volunteers who have missed coming to our stores to support Martlets and hunt for those quality items”. “As a charity we need our shops to help generate much-needed income as every penny of profit goes into helping Martlets provide life-changing hospice care to patients and their families in and around Brighton and Hove and the surrounding areas.”

see the on-line magazine at www.peacehavendirectory.co.uk or

Martlets has a wide range of charity shops, each with a different character that serves their local community – from the furniture showroom in Hove, the ‘high street shop’ on Blatchington Road, Hove - to the vintage store on Church Street and the busy stores of London Road and Western Road in Brighton. Woodingdean and Peacehaven also have large, community-focused shops that sell everything from toys to furniture. Martlets supports people, living with a terminal illness, across the city and beyond. Due to the impact of COVID-19 and social distancing measures, many people with a terminal illness are having to cope with long periods of isolation. They may also have decided not to go to hospital for treatment or visit their GP as often. This means the team at Martlets are working harder than ever to reach and support many more people with complex needs. For the latest information on donations please visit www.martlets.org.uk/donate-to-our-shops. www.martlets.org.uk
