Welcome to the October edition! The Front cover page has been very kindly supplied by Colette Langton of Colette Langton Photography. She told me the photo was of Hugo enjoying the Peacehaven fresh air with his besties, Bob and Buster, and invited me to guess which one is the naughty one! Having two dogs myself, I know it is usually the little one. I was getting excited about local groups getting up and running again. Then the new restrictions came into force. I think it is important to point out that anything that appears in the magazine is subject to change at a moments notice for the foreseeable future. I think it is worth remembering that we are coming into the season where people get colds and bugs and due to reduced sunlight get lowered immunity. One thing that gets overlooked by our health service is the importance of vitamins and minerals. Hopefully many of you have been soaking up a bit more natural sunlight and taking supplements. Vitamin D and Zinc are very important as is Vitamin C. It is also important that they are taken in the right ratios, so a trip to a Naturopath or sourcing a good quality multi vitamin from a reputable company is essential. So don’t wait, go into action now and get yourself boosted. Tests for Covid do not seem to be readily available at the moment so prevention is definitely the key if we are to protect our fellows and keep our economy going. Don’t forget the Meridian Surgery has merged with Rowe Avenue and become Haven Health. They have reported some issues with Phone lines during September and I have been seeing reports on social media platforms of people having difficulty accessing services. Hopefully the teething problems will get sorted. The Peacehaven Information page on Facebook can be a good source of information for this sort of thing. The Telscombe Civic Centre reception is now open for public enquiries from 1.15 pm – 4.15 pm Monday to Friday. it remains closed to hirers due to Covid-19. This was correct from the September update but may change. Please use our advertisers if you need their services. It is vital for Peacehaven and local areas to continue to thrive. Look out for each other. Anne (Editor)

ean Views ....or are they? As I was born in the early 1960s records always struck me as a rather old fashioned, rather pedestrian, way of playing music. There was the bulk of the LPs, the fragility and all that fiddling about cleaning and careful handling. Along came cassettes, they were youth friendly, more robust, portable and affordable. When Sony unveiled the Walkman it was a dream come true. I got a Sanyo look a like from my parents on a holiday abroad. The three random music cassettes bundled in were played to death over the next fortnight. My love affair was short lived. Soon after Tomorrows World showed an early CD player, I was besotted. On the day of release my friend and I scoured Bournemouth (I was at Uni) to hear a CD being played. We finally found a record shop where the owner proudly demonstrated a Dire Straits disc. A band I held in contempt became Rock Gods in the course of one CD.

Fast forward 37 years and my latest acquisition is a turntable. Why did I ever throw all those LPs and 45s away for those dull cassettes and sterile sounding CDs? Specialist manufacturers like Pro-ject and Rega have brought a near extinct format back from the brink as their usurpers are now heading for extinction. Some things won’t die….

Volunteer Driver Charity Opens
By Paula Woolven
The Havens Community Cars charity has opened and are looking for volunteers…
The Mayor of Newhaven, Councillor Graham Amy, officially opened the Havens Community Cars charity on Monday 7 September at their new office in Thompson Road, Denton.
Volunteer drivers can give as little as two hours per week to make a difference and are fully trained and provided with PPE equipment with fuel expenses being reimbursed.
Mayor Amy praised the efforts of the volunteers and Trustees in creating the scheme. He mentioned that he personally knew local people who were unable to use public transport that would benefit from the service and who needed help to attend vital hospital appointments and other essential daily living journeys.
To find out more about becoming a volunteer driver or to sign up to become a member, ring 01273 918226 or email havenscommcar@gmail.com
The charity has just appointed Nikki Marten as Scheme Co-ordinator. Chair of Trustees, Paula Woolven, said "we were delighted to be able to appoint such an approachable, community-minded manager, and Nikki will sustain and grow this vital new service for coastal residents from Seaford to Saltdean. We know that every journey matters."

Peacehaven Players News Some news from our wonderful theatre group who provide us with local entertainment, especially at Christmas time…
The Players have been unable to bring their shows to the Peacehaven stage this year due to Covid. They have not been able to rehearse and with ever changing restrictions on venues, there would be no firm agreement of the size of audience that could attend. But fear not, in 2021 they will endeavour to bring to our local stage ‘Lights out over London’ and ‘Cinderella’. Lights out over London was going to coincide with the commemoration of the 75 anniversary of VE Day, including well loved songs of the time. I look forward to being able to go and watch it in the future. Cinderella speaks for itself, with this well loved pantomime given the Players flare; always a pleasure to go and see at Christmas time, and get a bit of sillyness on the build up to Christmas. The players have not been hiding away during this year, they have provided a radio play of their popular 2014 musical show ‘Fly Me!’ This was one of my favourite, I remember watching it and found it really genuinely funny.
see the on-line magazine at www.peacehavendirectory.co.uk or
The radio adaptation is still available on YouTube. It was cleverly recorded via telephone conferencing during the lockdown. The easiest way to access this is to log onto the website www.peacehavenplayers.co.uk and click on the link.

Feedback, not failure By Chris Odle Christopher Odle is a Personal Trainer with many years experience. He worked with me during the early years of the magazine and wrote articles for us. He is back with an interesting take on feedback/failure. ‘I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work’. Thomas Edison Feedback is just information! Imagine walking on a rocky surface, like our beautiful beach, or a dry river bed, or a trail on the south downs; some of the stones are stable and solid, if you step on them, they don’t move. Some of the stones are slippery. Maybe there’s a little algae on them, or some mud; Some of the stones aren’t stable, they wiggle or tip when you step on them. With every step you take, you are getting feedback about the path and you can use that immediate feedback to correct your course as needed.
If you stumbled on that rocky path, you got feedback about an untrustworthy rock. You didn’t fail walking. If you fell down in the gym, you perhaps got feedback about leaning too far to the left; you didn’t fail in your exercise. If you ate really hot chili and spent the evening trying unsuccessfully to digest a fireball, you got feedback about what foods do or don’t work for you. You didn’t fail in eating them. No matter what happens, you don’t fail. In those moments, you just made a choice that didn’t work, but that gave you important information anyway. In these situations you could try to explore and analyse:
If you step on a rock and it shifts, did you fail? No, you just got important information about the next thing to do. You try another rock, You got feedback. It's data that you can use to make a decision. The physical sensation of whatever the rock is doing, sliding, tipping, or staying steady, tells you what you should do next. Same as with all your other movements, whether in the gym or outside of it. If you feel yourself leaning too much to one side, or losing your grip on a weight, or losing your balance, you take action to correct that.
Be curious about feedback. All of this is a path to selfknowledge. Look at the choices you make, and notice what happens when you make them. What information did you get? What insight? What data? What does that feedback tell you about what you could do next, or change?
Same with your eating habits. If you notice that certain foods seem to make you overeat, or make you feel sick, then you make a decision about whether to keep those foods around. Over time, you build a database from your feedback. If you walk that rocky trail often enough, you might start to learn which rocks to avoid or step on.
Change your perspective, to shift your perspective, you can ask yourself some key questions:
If you do your exercise or sport movements often enough, you learn which movements are tricky or harder to do properly. And you figure out some ways to anticipate and/or change that. If you get indigestion from food often enough, you’ll probably try to learn which foods trigger the gut churn. It’s all just information and, failure's not real.
Try getting rid of the words ‘good’ or ‘bad’ and substitute ‘interesting’ or ‘useful’, as in: ‘Well, that’s interesting’ or ‘That’s useful to know.’
Do your expectations of progress match reality? How do you know? Are you doing all the behaviours that truly matter the most, consistently? Could you be doing one or more of the basic practices a little bit better, or more often? And are you looking in discouraging or unsatisfying places for progress and happiness? If so, where else could you look? Treat it like a game and ask yourself, how’s this working for me? If the answer is fabulously, then keep doing it. If the answer is “not so great,” then use that information to change course, it’s no big deal. Accept the feedback, learn from it, and go forward with a fresh perspective.

(Aether Bios Clinic) Bridgeford’s Best Bites: Osteopathy Tips - Hamstring tightness HAMSTRING TIGHTNESS Many people suffer with tight hamstrings, limiting their comfort and movement and often affecting mobility of the back. The hamstrings cross two joints that are involved in bending the knee (flexion) and extending the thigh at the hip joint. In other words taking the leg behind you and bending the foot up towards your bottom. They are also involved in adduction of the thigh (bringing it towards the midline) as well as internal and external rotation of the knee. Anatomy: The hamstrings include 3 muscle groups located at the back of each thigh, attaching at one end to the ischial tuberosity (also known as the sitting bones) and at the other end behind the knee. The most medial (on the inner side of the knee) muscle is the semimembranosus, then the semitendinosus and the biceps femoris is the most lateral (to the outer side of the knee). The biceps femoris has two parts; a long and a short head. The semimembranosus and semitendinosus (together with sartorius muscle) insert into the medial surface of the tibia (the larger lower leg bone) and the medial condyle (knobbly bit at the top!); the biceps femoris inserts into the fibula head (the little bone at the side of the lower leg and the lateral condyle of the tibia. The muscles are innervated by the tibial branch of the sciatic (ischial) nerve, except the short head of the biceps femoris which is innervated by the common peroneal nerve. The hamstrings are part of the reflex system (as when someone taps under your knee and the lower leg jumps forwards for the patellar reflex) which will be instantly activated if, for example you stand on something hot, the hamstrings will activate to lift the foot up and back out of danger. Symptoms: As the hamstrings are involved in daily activities such as walking, bending, running and jumping they can impact our quality of movement and life when they are not in good shape or are injured. When hamstring muscles are tight it can limit our ability to bend forwards and touch our toes; this can also have an impact on our lumbar spine (low back) as the hamstrings can pull down on the pelvis via their attachments to the sitting bones and in turn affect the lumbar; the tension can also be felt at the attachments behind the knee. As they are innervated by a branch of the sciatic nerve they can be involved in sciatica. Hamstrings are particularly prone to injuries, which are common from the impact of sports.
Causes: A sedentary lifestyle will tend to cause tightening of the hamstrings, such as desk working, long hours of driving and long hours of sitting in front of TV, computer, etc. We all have different body types and some can tend towards more stiffness while others can be more flexible naturally, and some people can be hypermobile, which has its own set of problems. A lot of activity and over stretching can also cause a reflex tightening of the hamstrings and they tend to be one of the first muscles to tighten up. Injuries to hamstrings, such as partial tears in the muscle will leave scar tissue as it heals, causing ongoing stiffness, which needs to be addressed and treated appropriately and at the right time of healing. Lower back problems, particularly affecting the nerve root that supplies the hamstrings can also be a cause of tightness; the cause needs to be understood and treated accordingly. Diagnosis: Please see your doctor or physical therapist if you have an ongoing or serious issue with your hamstrings or back. Self Help: Stretching the hamstrings appropriately, without force and within your limits is beneficial, if not essential to good movement and back health. Please watch my video on hamstring stretches. There is something for everyone, with exercises standing, sitting and laying down and options for all levels of flexibility. Please only do what feels good and stay within your limits; remember that the key to stretching is listening to your body, backing off when you feel tension, approaching the tension gently and using the breathe to encourage the body to let go and release tension; stay in your comfort zone https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWIufKq8vjM&t=22s Treatment: Imaging may be required or even surgery, where there is tearing. Osteopathic/Manual Management: Determine the cause with a detailed case history and examination. Adjusting spinal and hip bones, soft tissue and using myofascial techniques, stretching, dry needling, home rehabilitation exercises; attention to postural habits and ergonomics. We are happy to advise you on your health matters.
