Change at last? ... Have AMD and Intel finally woken up? I have not written about AMD processors for years because hardly anything of note has happened. I have sat and watched the AMD range become more outdated. I was beginning to think the end was nigh - this has changed. There has been talk for a while about the new Zen architecture to replace the ageing AM1, AM3+ and FM2+ ranges. Apparently AMD have decided to simplify with a single AM4 socket. The motherboard chipset and processor chosen will dictate what functions are available. So, a high end processor will physically fit a basic motherboard but not all the features will work. This means that if you want the fastest processor then you do not have to purchase an expensive motherboard.
The processors and motherboards are organised into Bristol Ridge and Ryzen ranges. AMD hints that these should be available to buy in the next month. Intel has not been complacent, they have started selling their 7th Generation "Kaby Lake" processors and motherboards. These new processors are an evolution of the Skylake range. For a change even the budget ÂŁ50 CPUs are already on sale but the appeal is dampened by a matching motherboard costing around ÂŁ80. At last Intel and AMD have something worthwhile......

Introducing Local Author Roger Coote Roger has always enjoyed writing and in addition to his new book entitled ‘The Jackaroo – Outback Tales of a £10 Pom’, he wrote ‘The Farm Business’ whilst a lecturer at Plumpton Agricultural College. Many other articles followed on farming, tales of Sussex life and on his other passion gliding, not only in Sussex but France, Italy, Spain, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. Roger’s training and experience included working on his family’s Sussex downland farm and spending 3 years at Seale Hayne Agricultural College in Devon gaining an Honours Diploma. He managed the Duke of Norfolk’s Farms in West Sussex for some years and later was farming partner and consultant at Strutt and Parker’s Lewes office. In more recent years he was Development Officer for the British Gliding Association until he retired at 74 years. He was a senior flying instructor for over 40 years until ill health precluded his Pilot’s licence. Music and singing also continue to give him great pleasure as does travelling and outdoor pursuits such as walking and gliding. Remembering the many experiences and adventures of a jackaroo over 50 years ago was quite a challenge! It was both therapeutic and satisfying to recall and recount this special time spent in Australia, resulting in this precious little book which should be of great interest to others who have been to the land ‘Down – Under’ or are perhaps planning a visit.

Book Profile: Just missed National Service, three years studying agriculture at college, and in a comfortable job with weekends spent gliding and playing rugby, or working on the farms. Yet, something was wrong. More excitement was wanted and there was a need to get my hands dirty once again and to widen my horizons. The ‘£10 Poms’ were being paid a subsidy by the Australian Government to help ‘populate Australia’. The net cost worked out at £10 per head which is how the epithet was born. That was all over 50 years ago This is the story of a Sussex farmer’s son who took up the challenge and left the UK with nothing but a letter of introduction. The story tells of his experience in a very different kind of farming where a defective water supply could bankrupt a grazier in an unlucky drought season. We follow Roger’s progress as he works as a jackaroo on a mustering camp to learn the job and later to become an overseer on Milo, the million- acre property in West Queensland and currently the biggest sheep station in Australia.

Fund Raising efforts by local business for local Charity abcfund. Winter Solstice on 21st December was celebrated in style at 45 Arundel Road the home of GPD Fencing where Christmas Lights shone out for the benefit of our local abcfund charity. There was a barbeque, a tombola, drinks, mince pies and carol singing. The Sussex Coaster pub customers, neighbours and passers by joined in the merriment raising a magnificent £1,358.13. The money raised is used to provide Christmas food hampers, pantomime tickets, a trip to meet Santa on the Chichester Canal and summer days out during school holidays for local families who are facing adversity. 2016 was a good year for the charity attracting funding enabling them to put on more events for children. 2017 so far is going well with support from our local Co-op stores here in Peacehaven as well as from other local organisations working for the benefit of the community. We look forward to celebrating the Winter Solstice again this year, so make a note in your diary – Thursday 21st December.
Southern Stomp Line Dancers Support Christmas Appeal
Charity is always highlighted at Christmas time; this year the Line Dancers of Southern Stomp really found the spirit of Christmas with their generosity… Dancers from “Southern Stomp” Line Dance Club brought in items of food and festive treats to give to the local Food bank, organised by the ‘House Project’. This community organisation provides extra support for local people who are referred by agencies such as Churches, Social Services, Doctors etc; those that for whatever reason would benefit from some basic non-perishable foodstuffs. The Line Dancers put together 14 Christmas hampers which had extra treats, including selection boxes, chocolates and of course Christmas puddings! Joy Ashton, who runs the Line Dance Club, said she was overwhelmed by the generosity of the members who had supported the appeal and had brought in so much over the last few weeks. Joy de Souza who manages the ‘House Project’ said this donation would make a real difference to many families and individuals over the Christmas period and thanked everyone for their kindness. Thanks were also given by the Rev. Tim Mills of the Ascension Church and The Mayor of Peacehaven, Councillor Jean Farmiloe.

Bridgeford’s Best Bites: Osteopathy Tips COCCYX PAIN (COCCYDYNIA) Coccydynia is a pain felt in the coccyx or tailbone. It can accompany injury or strain to the coccyx or surrounding muscles, ligaments and tendons. The word coccyx comes from the Greek word meaning cuckoo, referring to its beak-like shape pointing towards the front of the body. Anatomy: The coccyx is the last few vertebrae at the base of the spine. It consists of small, loosely fused bones that attach to the sacrum, the triangular bones at the base of the spine just above the cleft of the buttocks. It is helpful with weight bearing when sitting and is an important attachment site for various muscles, tendons and ligaments. Symptoms: Pain and tenderness in the area just above the buttocks is the main symptom. This may be dull or achy and occasionally sharp. The pain can be aggravated when sitting down, moving from sitting to standing, standing for long periods, having sex, emptying the bowels or during a menstrual period. The pain may extend to the back, buttocks and hips and may cause sciatica. Bending over, driving and other daily tasks may be difficult and the pain may affect sleep. Serious coccyx injury may involve spinal cord injury causing severe back or neck pain, loss of bladder or bowel control, weakness in arms or legs or paralysis in part of the body. Causes: Trauma such as a direct impact, fall, accident or injury may bruise, dislocate or fracture the coccyx. Other common causes include poor posture and childbirth; prolonged or repeated strain on the coccyx from poor posture while driving and sports such as rowing and cycling; being over-weight can put more pressure on the coccyx, being under-weight can remove the natural cushioning for the coccyx. Less common causes can be bony growths on the coccyx, arthritis, if it is too rigid or too flexible and in rare cases, infection from a pilonidal abscess, or cancer. Often there is no obvious causes and it may relate to wear and tear due to ageing and wearing down of the cartilage, causing the bones to fuse. Diagnosis: You will need to see your doctor if the pain persists, self help doesn't ease the pain, the pain is very severe or you have bleeding, high temperature or pain away from the coccyx. The doctor will examine you to check for more serious causes of the pain, such as fracture or infection. X-rays, injections, MRI or a CT scan may be required as well as blood tests to help diagnose the cause. Treatment: Self help treatment includes avoiding sitting or standing for a prolonged time, using hot and cold packs applied to the tailbone, using a special coccyx cushion with a space cut out to allow freedom from pressure on the coccyx, avoiding wearing tight trousers that may put pressure on the coccyx. Laxatives may be helpful if opening the bowels aggravates the pain; over the counter pain medication may also be helpful. The doctor may prescribe stronger pain killers or anti-inflammatory medication. Corticosteroid injections, combined with local anaesthetic or nerve block injections may be used to reduce pain and inflammation. Stretching exercises to relax the muscles around the tailbone, postural advise, massage and manipulation may be recommended. Surgery is only recommended in severe cases and may involve removing some or all of the coccyx (coccygectomy) and this can have a long recovery time. Osteopathic/Manual Management: Take a detailed case history to understand the nature of the problem and surrounding issues. Examine the coccyx, pelvis, back and legs and all surrounding tissues; muscles, ligaments, nerves, fascia, etc., for movement, strength and functionality and assess nerve pathways. Perform orthopaedic and neurological tests and determine the root cause. Treat to reduce tension, nerve irritation and pain. Advice regarding exercise and stretching of back, buttocks and legs. Nationwide problem with disabled children accessing their Child Trust Fund New survey shows 87% of families believe that their disabled child won’t be able to access money held within their Child Trust Fund once they reach the age of 18. This means that families with disabled children, who are already dealing with complex and challenging lives, will need to spend their own money to access the fund. Across the UK, parents and carers of disabled children have taken part in a survey regarding Child Trust Funds. The survey was launched by Renaissance Legal, the leading provider of legal services to families and carers of disabled and vulnerable people, as part of its #ChildTrustFundAccess campaign. The Issue The UK Government introduced Child Trust Funds in 2005 with the aim of ensuring that every child has savings at the age of 18. However, there was no consideration made for the needs of disabled and vulnerable people, who may not have the mental capacity to access and manage their funds once they reach 18. For those that do not have the mental capacity to manage their finances, families and carers will need to apply to the Court of Protection to act as the child’s deputy. This process can cost in excess of £400, a sum which may exceed the amount held in the Child Trust Fund.
Survey highlights scale of the problem The results of the survey, where the majority of parents were concerned or unclear about their child’s ability to access the money, is a clear indication that thousands more disabled children in the UK may be disadvantaged. Additionally, 90% didn’t know how to access the money on behalf of their child in the event that they do not have the mental capacity to do so themselves. An online petition has been launched, calling central government to make a change which has gathered more than 370 signatures. Katherine Miller, Director at Renaissance Legal, says “The results of this survey highlight a serious issue with Child Trust Funds for disabled children. Not only do the vast majority of families believe their disabled child will lack the mental capacity to access their money, but families are also unsure how to go about doing so themselves. As well as the process being grossly unfair for those families, there is a lack of information as to how they can access the money their child is entitled to.“ Further information about the campaign can be found at:
