With the ever changing scene in the High Street we have been out again this month to review another eating establishment. See page 17 for more details plus lots more articles and information for Peacehaven, Telscombe and the surrounding areas. It was a shame that the election did not yield a more stable climate as I was hoping. The month of June was very strange with lots of unfortunate and upsetting events. I hope none of you were personally affected. I have witnessed so much kindness and thought for others though, so that is a positive. Vicki and I popped along to see ‘Oliver’ by the Peacehaven Players. We enjoyed it very much, there were some really good strong characters and always lovely to see the kids getting involved. I hope you went along and enjoyed it just as much. The sun also shone for the Lido on its opening, it is amazing what has been done, I hope you all get to try out this facility during the summer.

ean Views WannaCry and The NHS ... the story of poor management The chaos created by WannaCry in the NHS was initially blamed on hospitals being slow to update from Windows XP (which is no longer supported). Many trusts have migrated to Windows 7. However, Kaspersky researchers report that over 98% of the infected PCs were running Windows 7. Cost saving within the NHS has seen IT Directors jobs disappear, whole IT departments outsourced and overall control passing to inexperienced managers. Sometimes the overseeing manager is non-technical and relies on the contractor for technical advice. The contractor does the minimum needed to fulfil the contract. Strategic planning like upgrading from XP is the client's problem. Grants were available from the NHS if a business case was presented to show the hardware, software and additional labour costs to replace obsolete systems.

In some trusts those receiving the paperwork were oblivious of the significance of the grants, never claimed for new equipment and users struggled on with vulnerable obsolete systems. The grants did not cover, older, larger, expensive specialist equipment. Older CAT scans, X-Ray suites etc which were controlled by Windows XP were a problem. Some of the manufacturers who created the systems either do not exist or will not support the machines if the controlling computer is replaced. A complete new multi-million pound system is beyond the resources of hospitals with huge deficits. As hospital systems developed piecemeal updates have to be checked to ensure they do not unravel the ad hoc software that makes the systems function. Lethargic IT departments that were too slow to apply the patches to their machines are actually the most probable cause. Patches to prevent ransomware like WannaCry were released by Microsoft several months ago. Poorly maintained systems let WannaCry in, not XP PCs

Ollie is honoured THE INAUGURAL Simon Grabowski Memorial Award has been presented to Peacehaven & Telscombe By Pitchside View
Youth under 12s player Ollie Cooper. Simon Grabowski was a Peacehaven player through and through, who represented the club from under 8s in 1993 to the senior teams in the mid-2000s. He played for the first team two days before he died tragically in a car accident in 2005, aged 18. This new award in Simon's memory has been set up to recognise triumph against adversity within the Peacehaven & Telscombe Youth ranks. Under 12s manager and Community Club board member Clive Blunt said: “I have nominated Ollie Cooper for the Simon Grabowski award because at the start of last season he became unwell and started having small seizures, sometimes even during football matches.” Blunt continued: “After a considerable time and a few miss diagnosis and some worrying times for his family, Ollie was found to have a brain tumour. Throughout this time Ollie still wanted to play the sport he loves and never once complained.”
Peacehaven & Telscombe FC host the Simon Grabowski Memorial 5-a-side tournament every summer, raising money for his memorial fund. This year it takes place on Sunday July 16. Bridgeford’s Best Bites: Osteopathy Tips BALANCING THE BODY WITH BREATHING (PRANAYAMA) Pranayama means ‘to stretch the breath’. It is prudent to advance gradually in any form of stretching that we do with the physical body. When stretching the physical body the ligaments act as elastic tissue and have a great capacity to stretch, provided the extent of flexibility is approached and accommodated gradually by the entire organism. At the same time, the muscle tissue needs to be strong enough to provide adequate support for the increased flexibility, maintaining a healthy balance. If ligaments are stretched too rapidly beyond their limit injury results, ranging from tearing of a few fibres to a complete ligamentous tear, requiring an extended recovery period. When stretching the breath, it seems logical that the same caution should be applied with the same aim of maintaining balance in the system as a whole. In the physical mechanics of breathing, we are moving many body tissues as we take air into the lungs. The lungs themselves, the pleural lining around the lungs and between the fissures, the fascial tissue between the lungs and all surrounding organs and structures – heart, oesophagus, diaphragm, ribs, sternum, spine – particularly the cervical spine from which the lungs are suspended. Not forgetting that all the nerves and blood vessels are housed in this elastic fascial tissue that surrounds just about every structure in the body. Also the structures affected by these adjacent structures, in particular all the abdominal organs that are affected by the diaphragm as it moves with the breath. Injury patterns and restrictions in any of these structures can become more apparent when the breath is stretched further than accustomed. A restricted rib or cervical vertebra, e.g., may start to move more freely in response to gently expanding the breath. Gradually, with careful expansion of the breath, deeper tensions may start to release. When deep fascial tissue tensions in and between organs are released therapeutically, they can release deep tensions that may have been held in the body for a long period of time, without the person being consciously aware of them. This requires a deep adjustment within the whole system to regain an equilibrium that is ultimately beneficial though perhaps at first a little disorientating. I feel that a similar release can be gained with careful Pranayama. If the stretch of the breath and the tissues is gradual, the body can easily accommodate the micro changes whilst maintaining equilibrium. Imagine the effect of tension in the pleural tissue. Suppose that this tension pulls through to the diaphragm, affecting the breathing generally and the entire abdominal system via the restricted diaphragmatic movement. It may also pull through to the psoas muscle affecting the kidneys, which normally travel 600 metres along the psoas every day. The tension in the psoas muscle may pull unevenly on the hip and the lumbar spine affecting the nerve distribution to surrounding muscles and organs. The body considers organs and blood vessels to be more important than joints for survival, so it is happy for the person to have an adapted posture creating tension in a joint in order to make space to minimise or avoid any effective tension in an organ. Imagine now that the breath is suddenly stretched, releasing all the tension in the pleural tissue. The dynamics of the forces held throughout the body to help compensate for this tension are now no longer required. Suddenly, the accommodation and adaption around the stresses on the diaphragm, kidneys, lumbar spine, hip and perhaps reflex nerve responses all need to change, yet the change is far too great for the body to accommodate, resulting in imbalance. I feel the principal is similar to overstretching a ligament by excessive physical stretching, just that the physical stretching is this time accomplished with the breath. Gentle breathing techniques allow the person to develop control over the breathing mechanism and the rhythm of the breath; bonding with the lobes of the lungs and the breath whilst having a beneficial effect on the body structures and circulation. A volunteering call to arms from charity group “A volunteering call to arms from charity group ‘Time To talk befriending’ is a Brighton based charity that is extending its much needed services into our area and is calling upon local residents to volunteer, could you be that person?” Time to Talk Befriending is a local Charity that helps older people who feel lonely, invisible and forgotten to “feel like they are living again” and “no longer feel trapped inside their own home”. Here is what one of our scheme members has said about what we do and her befriender: "Meeting my befriender and her son has transformed my life... [I] am not sure where this poem came from but when [I] read this poem it immediately reminded me of all the kindness and care [I] have received from the befriending service; Thank you for loving, for giving and sharing, thank you for listening, helping and caring; for all the wonderful things that you do, but most of all thank you for just being you!” – Scheme Member
I always make time for a chat with someone in the supermarket queue, for example, as you’ve no idea how lonely the rest of their day might be.” – Volunteer Time to Talk Befriending are currently looking for volunteers in Brighton & Hove, particularly in the following areas: ● Rottingdean

If you can spare an hour of your time every fortnight and would like to make a positive difference in someone’s life through befriending, we would love to hear from you.

It’s completely changed my opinion of older people and has changed the way I behave with people in the street too…
