This hymn, originally composed in German, was written by Joachim Neander in 1680. Catherine Winkworth translated it into English in 1863. Winkworth lived most of her life in Manchester England but translated several volumes of German hymns into English. More than any other single person, she helped bring the German chorale tradition to the English speaking world.

Prayer of Confession Merciful God, as we gather in worship we bring all that we are before you, including our fears. We confess that our peace is easily disturbed and our worries are easily provoked. The crises of life often cause us to question your love for us, and we seek our security in things other than you. Forgive our lack of trust. Grant us now a fresh vision of your power as we continue to offer our confession in silence... Assurance of God’s Forgiveness *Congregational Response Fairest Lord Jesus..........................................................................................CRUSADER’S HYMN Fairest Lord Jesus, ruler of all nature, O Thou of God and man the Son; Thee will I cherish, Thee will I honor Thou, my soul’s glory, joy and crown! ** Life of the Congregation Scripture Reading: Psalm 93 Pastoral Prayer and the Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors, And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Offering Our Gifts Out of the Deep from Requiem ......................................................John Rutter The Chancel Choir Guang Wang, Cello O ut of the deep have I called unto Thee, O Lord, Lord, hear my voice. O let Thine ear consider well the voice of my complaint. In Psalm 130, one of the penitential psalms, the psalmist cries out to God from a deep, dark, troubled place, represented by the solo cello in this setting. Yet there is faith and trust in the mercy and “plenteous redemption” of God.
If Thou, Lord, wilt be extreme to mark what is done amiss, O Lord! Who may abide it. For there is mercy with Thee, therefore shalt Thou be feared. I look for the Lord, my soul doth wait for Him, And in His Word is my trust! My soul fleeth unto the Lord Before the morning watch I say, before the morning watch. O Israel trust in the Lord, for with the Lord there is mercy, And in Him is plenteous redemption, And He shall redeem Israel from all his sins, from all his sins. Out of the deep have I called unto Thee, O Lord; Lord, hear my voice. — from Psalm 130
*Hymn of Thanksgiving Holy, Holy, Holy (all singing)..........................................................................NICAEA Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning, our song shall rise to Thee. Holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty. God in three Persons, blessed Trinity: Amen!

Mark 4:35-41....................................................................................Pew Bible, page 1558 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” 35
He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.
39
He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” 40
They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!” 41
Written in 2002, In Christ Alone was a collaborative effort between Stuart Townend and fellow songwriter Keith Getty. “I’ve been amazed by the response to this song,” says Townend. One e-mail described how a U.S soldier serving in Iraq would pray through each verse of the song every day, and how the promises of God’s protection and grace helped to sustain him through the enormous pressures and dangers of life in a war zone.

A Grace Disguised: How the Soul Grows through Loss By Karl W. Giberson
An expanded edition of this classic book on grief and loss—with a new preface and epilogue loss came suddenly for Jerry Sittser. In an instant, a tragic car accident claimed three generations of his family: his mother, his wife, and his young daughter. While most of us will not experience such a catastrophic loss in our lifetime, all of us will taste it. And we can, if we choose, know as well the grace that transforms it. Available in the Peachtree Bookstore and the Williams Center.
