SERMON OUTLINE
WHAT IS MAN THAT YOU ARE MINDFUL OF HIM?
Psalm 8
Humility without dignity leads to despair. Dignity without humility leads to arrogance. Let your wonder bring you to worship. Let your worth inspire you to a deeper calling. True significance is only found in God’s greatness.
How to live with both wonder and worth:
1. Look Upward – The Wonder of God’s Majesty
□ L ord , our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens. 2 Through the praise of children and infants you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger. 3 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place … (Psalm 8:1-3)
2. Look Inward – The Honesty of our Insignificance
□ What is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? (Psalm 8:4)
3. Look Outward – The Dignity of our Calling
□ You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor. 6 You made them rulers over the works of your hands; you put everything under their feet: 7 all flocks and herds, and the animals of the wild, 8 the birds in the sky, and the fish in the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas. 9 L ord , our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! (Psalm 8:5-9)
4. Look Forward – The Grace of God’s Family
□ In putting everything under them, God left nothing that is not subject to them. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to them.
9 But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.
10 In bringing many sons and daughters to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through what he suffered. 11 Both the one who makes people holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. (Hebrews 2:8b-11)
WHO AM I?
By Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Who am I? They often tell me I would step from my cell's confinement calmly, cheerfully, firmly, like a country squire from his country house.
Who am I? They often tell me I would talk to my captors freely and friendly and clearly, as though it were mine to command.
Who am I? They also tell me I would bear the days of misfortune equably, smilingly, proudly, like one accustomed to win. Am I then really all that which other men tell of? Or am I only what I know of myself, restless and longing and sick, like a bird in a cage, struggling for breath, as though hands were compressing my throat, yearning for colors, for flowers, for the voices of birds, thirsting for words of kindness, for neighborliness, trembling with anger at despotisms and petty humiliation, tossing in expectation of great events, powerlessly trembling for friends at an infinite distance, weary and empty at praying, at thinking, at making; faint, and ready to say farewell to it all?
Who am I? This or the other?
Am I one person today, and tomorrow another? Am I both at once? A hypocrite before others, and before myself a contemptibly woebegone weakling? Or is something within me still like a beaten army, fleeing in disorder from victory already achieved?
Who am I?
They mock me, these lonely questions of mine. Whoever I am, thou knowest, O God, I am thine.
