PRELUDE | “What Wondrous Love Is This” order of service

CHORAL INTROIT | “Lamb of God”
Lamb of God most holy, who on the cross didst suffer, Patient still and lowly, Thyself to scorn didst offer; Our sins by Thee were taken, or hope had us forsaken: Have mercy on us, O Jesus!
welcome & invocation

OPENING HYMN | “O Sacred Head Now Wounded”
O sacred head now wounded with grief and shame weighed down Now scornfully surrounded with thorns thine only crown O sacred Head, what glory, what bliss till now was Thine! Yet, though despised and gory, I joy to call Thee mine.
What thou, my Lord, hast suffered ‘twas all for sinners’ gain Mine, mine was the transgression, but thine the deadly pain Lo, here I fall, my Savior, ‘tis I deserve thy place Look on me with thy favor, vouchsafe to me thy grace
What language shall I borrow to thank thee, dearest Friend
For this, thy dying sorrow, Thy pity without end? Oh, make me thine forever and should I fainting be, Lord, let me never, never outlive my love to thee
prayer of confession
Dear Lord, as we come to your table tonight, we remember those twelve friends who gathered with you on the night of the Last Supper. They walked with you, heard you teach, saw miracles and wonders you revealed, and now they heard you say that one of them would betray you. And each of them was distressed and said, Is it I? Every one of them knew they were capable of letting you down. Along with them, we know we are full of shadows and failings. We listen to you and the next day directly disobey you. We think of you and deliberately turn away from what you ask us to do. Lord, forgive us our foolishness, willful sinfulness, our disregard for what you would have us do and be. Bring us to your side and keep showing us the way. Now Lord, we confess to you our failures and sin in silence….

CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE “Beneath the Cross of Jesus”
Beneath the cross of Jesus I humbly take my stand; The shadow of a mighty rock within a weary land; A home within the wilderness, a rest upon the way, From the burning of the noontide heat and the burdens of the day.
I take, O cross, thy shadow for my abiding place; I ask no other sunshine than the sunshine of his face; Content to let the world go by, to know no gain or loss; My sinful self my only shame, my glory all the cross.

CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE | “Ah, Holy Jesus”
Ah, holy Jesus, how hast thou offended, That man to judge Thee have in hate pretended? By foes derided, by thine own rejected, O most afflicted!
Therefore, kind Jesus, since I cannot pay thee, I do adore thee, and will ever praise Thee, Think on thy pity and Thy love unswerving, Not my deserving.

THE SHADOW OF VIGIL | MATTHEW 26:36-44
“The Last Supper ”
This is the body that was broken: take and eat
This is the blood shed for many; take and drink—Amen And it will cover you, and make you new—O Jerusalem
I know we’ll be together someday again
O how I’ll miss these moments with you my friends
I know we’ll be together eternally
And I will be there waiting—come home to Me
Come home to Me
And when darkness comes
Reach for Me, O Israel, O Israel
I know we’ll be together eternally
And I will be there waiting—come home to Me
Come home to Me.

THE SHADOW OF ARREST | JOHN 18:1-11
“Out of the Deep” | Psalm 130
Out of the deep have I called unto Thee, O Lord, Lord, hear my voice.
O let thine ears consider well the voice of my complaint!
If Thou, Lord, wilt be extreme to mark what is done amiss, O Lord, who may abide it?
For there is mercy with Thee, therefore shalt Thou be feared. I look for the Lord, my soul doth wait for Him, And in His word is my trust.
My soul fleeth unto the Lord, before the morning watch, I say, before the morning watch.
O Israel trust in the Lord, for with the Lord there is mercy, And with Him is plenteous redemption
And He shall redeem Israel from all his sins.
THE SHADOW OF CRUCIFIXION & DEATH LUKE 23:32-46
“When I Survey”
When I survey the wondrous cross on which the Prince of glory died, my richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride.
Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast save in the death of Christ, my God! All the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them through his blood.
See, from his head, his hands, his feet, sorrow and love flow mingled down. Did e’er such love and sorrow meet, or thorns compose so rich a crown?
Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were a present far too small. Love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all.
