SERMON OUTLINE
WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?
Psalm 22
“On the Cross, Jesus voluntarily and willingly bowed his head under the power of Sin and the curse of God. It is vital that we understand that the Father did not do this to the Son; the Son and the Father are doing this together …. God is submitting to his own wrath.” – Fleming Rutledge
The Prayer of the Cross
• The nature of his suffering
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish? – Psalm 22:1
• The strength of his weakness
But you, L ord , do not be far from me. You are my strength; come quickly to help me. – Psalm 22:19
• The victory of his defeat
All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the L ord , and all the families of the nations will bow down before him, for dominion belongs to the L ord and he rules over the nations. All the rich of the earth will feast and worship; all who go down to the dust will kneel before him—those who cannot keep themselves alive. Posterity will serve him; future generations will be told about the Lord. They will proclaim his righteousness, declaring to a people yet unborn: He has done it! – Psalm 22:27-31
Experiencing the Cross
“You see, ‘… why hast thou forsaken me? means he was so holy that Jesus had to die. But, ‘My God, my God …?’ means that Jesus was so loving that he was willing to die…. Jesus Christ was truly deserted by God so that you are only ever apparently deserted by God. He got the abandonment we deserve; therefore, God will never truly abandon you at all.” – Tim Keller
Daily Dwell: March 23-29
“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?…” - Psalm 22:1
