The author of this hymn text, Walter Chalmers Smith, was ordained as pastor of Chadwell Street Scottish Church in London on Christmas Day, 1850. His exalted view of God’s wisdom and rule over all things is the basis of our confidence in seeking God’s direction for our lives. In what area of life do you need God’s wisdom today?

Prayer of Confession Gracious and Loving God, you have promised that when we seek you, you will be found. You have given us your word to be a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. You have invited us to ask for the wisdom we need, knowing that you will give it. We confess that we often seek guidance for our lives from other sources. We are surrounded by popular opinions and the latest trends. We are drawn to paths of least resistance. Our prayers are hurried and we are not patient in listening for your answer to us. Forgive us, O God, and guide our steps. Help us to hear your voice and make us bold to risk obeying what we hear. Speak you guiding word even now as we continue our prayer in silence . . . Assurance of God’s Forgiveness *Congregational Response Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing..............................................................NETTLETON O to grace how great a debtor, daily I’m constrained to be; Let Thy goodness, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to Thee. Prone to wander, Lord I feel it, prone to leave the God I love. Here’s my heart: O, take and seal it, seal it for Thy courts above. ** Life of the Congregation This poem I believe in the sun… was discovered written on a wall in the Cologne concentration camp during World War II, and it has been set to music by many composers.

Invitation to Prayer I Believe.........................................................................................................................Mark Miller The Peachtree Youth Choir Chancel Ensemble

I believe in sun even when it’s not shining. I believe in love even when I don’t feel it. I believe in God even when God is silent. Pastoral Prayer and the Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors, And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

“I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.

3

I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” So Abram went, as the LORD had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Harran.

He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Harran, and they set out for the land of Canaan, and they arrived there.

Genesis 15:4-6........................................................................................Pew Bible, page 21 Then the word of the Lord came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.” 4

He took him outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.”

Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.

Go in god’s name The text of the hymn we sing as Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah dates back to 1745 authored by William Williams. It was not until 1771 that the words were translated from Welsh to English. The tune we sing came much later, composed in 1905 by John Hughes. The hymn is based on Exodus 16:4 in which the Lord provides for his people in the wilderness by giving bread from heaven.

Risk is Right By John Piper

As social justice, environmental causes, and not-for-profit ministries rise in popularity, more and more people are looking for a life of adventure, to live for something greater than themselves. Helping Christians put their faith into action for the glory of God, popular pastor John Piper is releasing this stand-alone edition of chapter 5 from his best-selling book Don’t Waste Your Life. Piper teaches that risk is an action that opens us up to the possibility of loss or injury, but that living for Christ necessarily involves taking risks in faith, a road that ultimately leads to fullness of joy, the glory of God, and the good of others.
