Placing the Bible Prayer of Confession Gracious and loving God, by your Spirit you surround us on all sides and you are intimately acquainted with all our ways. You know our thinking and speaking, our actions and attitudes. In our sin, we experience your presence as confinement. We often seek our freedom in unhindered self-will. Forgive us and grant us the gift of true freedom that comes only in glad and trusting fellowship with you. Do this liberating work among us even now as we turn to you and offer our silent prayers of confession… Assurance of God’s Forgiveness Congregational Response* My Country ’Tis of Thee  #513 (v. 4) Nicene Creed*  See page 3 Life of the Congregation**

Invitation and Benediction* Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord; He is trampling out the vintage Where the grapes of wrath are stored; He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword; His truth is marching on. Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on.

Postlude

I have seen Him in the watch fires of a hundred circling camps; They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps; I can read His righteous sentence in the dim and flaring lamps, His day is marching on. Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His day is marching on. In the beauty of the lilies, Christ was born across the sea, With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me: As He died to make men holy, let us live to make men free; While God is marching on. Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! While God is marching on. If your young child needs attention during worship, live broadcasts of the service are available in the Williams Center and the Family Room off of the Williams Center.

I believe in one God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible; And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds; God of God; Light of Light; Very God of Very God; Begotten, not made; Being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; Who for us men, and for our salvation, came down from heaven; And was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the virgin Mary, and was made man; And was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried; And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures; And ascended into heaven; And sitteth on the right hand of the Father. And He shall come again with glory to judge both the quick and the dead; Whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Ghost; The Lord and Giver of Life; Who proceedeth from the Father and the Son; Who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified; Who spake by the prophets. And I believe one holy catholic and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins. And I look for the resurrection of the dead; And the life of the world to come. Amen.

In the first three centuries, the church found itself in a hostile cultural environment. On the one hand, it grappled with the challenge of relating the gospel to a changing Greco-Roman culture. On the other hand, it was threatened not only by persecution but by ideas that conflicted with the biblical witness. When Constantine won control of the Roman Empire in AD 312, he elevated Christianity to favored status. The new emperor soon discovered that the “one faith and one church,” which were parts of his motto, were fractured with theological dispute, particularly on the nature of Jesus Christ. To counter a widening rift, he convened a council in the year 325 which met in the city of Nicaea. Out of that convention came the Nicene Creed, which gradually became and remains to this day the most widely used of all Christian statements of belief. It is common to Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and most Protestant forms of the Christian faith.
