The Path
10 Commandments for our daily walk Exodus 20:15, 17
Do This. Don’t Do That.
The Ten Commandments are the most famous set of rules in history.
But what if our understanding of the Ten Commandments is, well, off the path?
What we in English refer to as the Old Testament Law, the Hebrews referred to as the Torah. In its original language, the Torah was understood not as a set of legal or moral prescriptions - do this, don’t do that - but as a relationship. Torah is really a directional word that alerts us how to pay attention to God’s purposes and promises and providences.
Instead of laws, as in a courtroom, consider the Ten Commandments as the top ten of a complete teaching guide from God. Its purpose is to keep us on the right path, and save us from our human tendency to wander off and get lost.
“Direct me in the path of your commands, for there I find delight.” Psalm 119:35

ASSEMBLE IN GOD’S NAME Prelude Andantino in B-flat...............................................................................William Russell **Life of the Congregation Call to Worship Pastor: How lovely is your dwelling place, O LORD Almighty! My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the LORD. People: My heart and my flesh cry out for the living God. Blessed are those who dwell in your house; they are ever praising you. Pastor: For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows favor and honor. People: Better is one day in the courts of the Lord than a thousand elsewhere. Psalm 103, a hymn of praise and thanks, is a fitting call to worship as we remind each other of God’s gracious generosity. Scotsman Henry Lyte experienced many difficulties in life including a frail body. But as a testimony to God’s faithfulness, he wrote Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven, a paraphrase of Psalm 103.

Prayer of Confession Gracious and loving God, how easily we overlook your gifts to us while we gaze with longing at your gifts to others. We see what others have and feel the cravings of a restless and fallen heart. Feeding our sense of lack, we indulge self-pity and thus we despise your goodness to us. Forgive our sin, we pray, and give us thankful hearts. Grant to us the joy of contentment that comes from living in the abundance of your grace. Satisfy us in these moments with your steadfast love as we continue our confession in silence . . . Assurance of God’s Forgiveness *Congregational Response Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing.....................................................nettleton O to grace how great a debtor, daily I’m constrained to be; Let Thy goodness, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to Thee. Prone to wander, Lord I feel it, prone to leave the God I love. Here’s my heart: O, take and seal it, seal it for Thy courts above Invitation to Prayer Lord God of Abraham from Elijah............................................Felix Mendelssohn Adrian Smith, soloist
Draw near, all ye people: come to me!
Lord God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, This day let it be known that Thou art God and that I am Thy servant. Lord God of Abraham, Oh show to all this people that I have done these things according to Thy word. Oh hear me, Lord, and answer me. Lord God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, oh hear me and answer me, And show this people that Thou art Lord God And let their hearts again be turned.
Pastoral Prayer and the Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors, And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. W W W. P E AC H T R E E P R E S . O R G

Offering Our Gifts Jesus Paid It All......................................................................................arr. Robert Sterling The Chancel Choir
I hear the Savior say, “Thy strength indeed is small! Child of weakness, watch and pray, find in Me thine all and all.” Jesus paid it all, all to Him I owe; Sin had left a crimson stain, He washed it white as snow.
For nothing good have I whereby Thy grace to claim. I’ ll wash my garments white in the blood of Calv’ry’s Lamb. Jesus paid it all, all to Him I owe; Sin had left a crimson stain, He washed it white as snow.
And when before the throne I stand in Him complete, “Jesus died my soul to save,” my lips shall still repeat. Jesus paid it all, all to Him I owe; Sin had left a crimson stain, He washed it white as snow.
*Hymn of Thanksgiving Holy, Holy, Holy (all singing)......................................................................nicaea Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning, our song shall rise to Thee. Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty. God in three Persons, blessed Trinity. Amen!

GO IN GOD’S NAME Englishman Folliot Pierpoint wrote this hymn on a beautiful spring afternoon in Bath, England, in 1864 “when all the earth seemed to rejoice.” It was originally composed as a communion hymn, but the text was changed to be a more general hymn of thanksgiving. If you were to write more verses to the hymn this week, what blessings from God would you include?

At Lent, the custom is that we’re supposed to give something up. Every year, it’s the usual suspects: Soda. Alcohol. Sweets. Swearing. Social media. Fast Food. Chips. And of course the king of all Lenten sacrifices: Chocolate. Poor chocolate. The guilty anecdote to a stressful life. But does a chocolate abstinence program really help others? This year, we have some tasty advice:
Go ahead and eat the chocolate. Serve instead.
Get connected with one of Peachtree’s 30 Days of Serving.
