RECOVERING MAPOCHO RIVER This project is the result of recognizing the potential found in pre-existing infrastructure existing in cities today, in whose under-utilized areas can be quickly be transformed into a space for public use. in this case, it can be acheived with the superimposition of just two simple operations. 0_Pre-existencia: Concrete channel, 40 meters wide, 5 meters high and 6.8 kilometers long. An existing partition wall, 80 cms in heigh, separate the center riverbed from the 8 meter wide . 1_Paving: We propose to reutilize the current maintenance channel by repaving the surface thus facilitating the space for public use and sustainabile transit. 2_Access: We propose to install a series of prefabticated steel structures for access that are equipped with drawbridge ramps and services to provides access to the river and ensure public safety and protect infrastructure in case of flooding.

ABANDONMENT
The Mapocho River was key to the founding of Santiago. Later on, the construction of Los Tajamares, which included access to the river and a boardwalk, elevated the river as the principal landscape of this colonial city.
POTENTIAL
As a symbol of progress, the river was channelled during the first century of the republic. The accesses were removed, severing the river from the city, and consequently, a period of abandonment and deterioration began.
MAIN INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS AND RIVER CHANNEL TIMELINE
The water has been recently decontaminated, creating possibilities for reintegrating the river into the city. However, the field of action is limited by a concrete channel and an urban highway that runs along the north bank.

With the results of this academic investigation, the authors drew support from local non-profit organizations, who in turn mobilized the community to generate a powerful voice of public interest. This motivated the involvement of local government entities, culminating in organized events within the channel with more than 4000 people attending at the last event in 2013. These people, the majority of whom experiencing the river for the first time after decades of abandonment, have gone home with a new, positive relationship with the river.

Thanks to the community support, the project has been picked up by the municipalities and regional government and funding committed to its construction. And so, after three years, an intitiative that began with social support was transformed into a state project. The layout of the project connects the one million people residing in 8 districts of diverse socioeconomic status by means of a corridor of social integration that physically connects the more vulnerable areas of the city with the more privilieged ones in a spatial experience that brings Santiaguinos face to face.
