One thing that I have learned in my travels is that structural fabricators are very resilient. Let’s be realistic, we know from firsthand experience, and from AISC reports that the last year was difficult, but it is not a reason to panic!

We didn’t bring the tool changer to the fabrication party, but we have certainly made it better. You would think that our engineers would leave it alone – but no they have improved it with new under web scribing technology. Greek Fabricator Visits NASCC: Values Technology EDITOR NOTE: Kostas Liaromatis is a premier structural fabricator, located in Patros, Greece. They specialize in industrial and commercial work, such as power plants, factories, refineries, and similar petro-chemical type work. My Glass is Always Half Full! I know many of you readers know me personally by now. I can honestly say that I am very excited about the future of steel construction in North America. Why? The AISC reports that 58% of domestic construction is steel. We are winning the battle here against concrete. Also, I want to emphasize that the USA still remains one of the best countries in the world to do business, and our federal government has programs to help us invest (like 100% bonus depreciation). A fabricator owner from the East Coast told it to me best. Here are his words: “I am tired of people who say the economy ‘is what it is’ That’s nonsense! I control my own destiny because I invested in technology over 10 years ago – this investment has served my business very well. I am always competitive – and I can choose what projects I want to bid: the profitable ones.”
So let’s all of us join together to move our industry forward with confidence – as you know, “my glass is ALWAYS half full”!! Let’s toast to the strength of steel in Pittsburgh!

From Show Floor to Shop Floor the Advantage 2 Continues to Deliver! If you visited the NASCC last year in Orlando, Florida you received a front row seat to the unveiling of the Advantage 2 Drill Line – a machine that is breaking sales records around the globe. Fabricators took notice of its rapid drilling speeds, powerful build, and superior technology on the show floor. “But what happens to machines after they leave the NASCC?” “Do they really perform as displayed in a REAL PRODUCTION environment?” To prove that the technology in the Peddinghaus booth isn’t “all show” the editorial staff at the Steel Fabricators’ Review paid a visit to the user of the very first Advantage 2 drill line – Norco Manufacturing in Franksville, Wisconsin. We asked the experts and found out if seeing truly is believing at the NASCC. MQL lubrication on the Advantage 2 leaves parts practically dry and ready for secondary operations without the need to clean materials after drilling.
Is this your first Peddinghaus machine? What other equipment do you have in your shop?
Art Rodriguez, Production Manager: We have several Peddinghaus machines including a 643 Anglemaster, and BDL-760 saw/drill in addition to the new Advantage 2. Outside these machines we employ all types of other equipment from mills to machining centers to band saws to painting booths. We are always watching the machinery market and always have our eye out for technology.

Can you tell the SFR a bit more about the products Norco manufactures – Why is a machine like this necessary for your operations?
Dave Eberle, President: Norco Manufacturing provides universal overhead doors that are installed on military bases, airports, commercial buildings, and of course specialty applications that require complex door mechanisms. We ship around the globe to locations that include not only the USA, but Africa, the Middle East, Philippines, Egypt, Hong Kong, and even Antarctica. All parts are made and manufactured by Norco in our Wisconsin facilities so we can control costs, delivery, and quality in every aspect of operations. We do not outsource any of our fabrication work and pride ourselves in that respect. The Peddinghaus drill lines we employ are a critical part of our production when it comes to the structural sections for our door structures.
If you had to compare your old drill to your Advantage 2 what would you say are the main differences?:
Art Rodriguez, Production Manager: The new machine is like night and day compared to the old one. It’s faster, stronger, and more efficient. I have to say even though it is much more modern, and complex at first glance, the technology actually makes it easier to operate, and faster to learn. Our operator picked it up in no time! When it comes to the tool changer I would say it makes the machine much safer to operate. People aren’t required to enter the machine for every different hole size in a program like our older 3 spindle drill. At Norco many of our beams have up to 4 different hole sizes in addition to scribe marking – so this is a big advancement for us.

drill times – there is no comparison in speed between the two. The carbide tooling maintains amazing tool life, commonly 1100 - 1200 holes per insert without replacing. On top of this we are able to simply swap out the insert and eliminate the sharpening you would have with twist drills. Since the machine can run both we use the twist drills in special applications such as when a really long tool is needed and one in carbide isn’t available. On toed in or toed out flanges the Advantage 2 measuring system maintains superior accuracy on all profiles.
So it sounds like these things have made life easier for production – anything else?
Art Rodriguez, Production Manager:
Norco Manufacturing’s machine operators learned the new machine with little issue due to its modern, and intuitive technology.
We love the MQL lubrication system; we like it so much, we are looking to upgrade the old drill to use the same technology. It requires much less cleanup, with no compromise in tool life. Instead of a flood coolant mixture (water and chemical) it applies a small amount of lubricant to the cutting surface of the tool. This really eliminates a lot of the cleanup required with the old way of doing things.
How is the accuracy of the machine? Does the roller wheel cause you any concerns?

How was the change from High Speed Steel tooling to Carbide Inserts?:
Even though we run both types on the new machine, the carbide allows us to use much more aggressive feeds and speeds for really fast
No concerns at all. The measurement has been fantastic and the machine has been well within spec for all parts thus far– within less than 1/32” in everything I have seen. The new roller wheel system has been superb in adjusting for toed in or toed out flanges. Since we run a lot of small materials, they have a tendency to get damaged in transport – a smart measurement system is key to our success.

How do you feel this machine will impact the future of your company?

“The justification for buying our first Peddinghaus machine was for Vandenberg AFB SLC 6 project in 2001, to increase our productivity, and our sales volume,” says Chris Olsen. “Our purchase was very significant. We were laying out all our holes in our structural shapes by hand and punching or drilling them manually. We were able to increase our production rates approximately 17% and our annual through-put by 35% with the same manpower.”

Don’t let the tedious task of file conversions slow down your data production. Unlike the fabrication shop, programmers and detailers are manufacturers of a different kind of product – data. Although data is not a tangible item that can be drilled, cut, or welded like a structural member its production can be just as time consuming and even more costly. The application of innovative software, such as Adnexxus, reduces the man hours required to program modern CNC equipment. By taking information directly from Tekla and seamlessly creating Peddinghaus parts files from the original data set, accuracy is achieved and efficiency is enhanced.
What is Adnexxus and how does it expedite the programming process? Adnexxus is the direct bi-directional API between Peddinghaus software and Tekla Structures. By closing the gap between design and fabrication, the parts designed in Tekla are now translated directly into part programs with CNC operations in mind. Antiquated methods of bringing Tekla part files into modern CAM applications require programmers to convert from Tekla to a common file standard; and then convert that file into a part program for the machine in question. These multiple conversions paired with the vagueness of file standards commonly create inaccuracies in translation. Copes get moved, scribes get misplaced, and employees spend hours resolving conversion issues. Peddinghaus' Adnexxus software eliminates these intermediary file conversions between Tekla and Peddinghaus software. The part program created by Adnexxus uses geometric data straight from the source, derives naming structures from the original design and includes additional data that would have been previously omitted in common file conversions. Familiar conversion errors are accounted for and the countless hours previously spent fixing files can now be placed into value added operations elsewhere in your organization.
Automatic layout and part mark programming with Adnexxus. Tekla Structures is a program that focuses on connection design and geometry. Adnexxus offers the tools to translate this information into automatic layout programming, eliminating the task of entering layout dimensions into a part program. By simply checking the “scribe” feature within Adnexxus, total part number and layout marking is automatically placed within the Peddinghaus part program. Software that requires manual programming for layout marking is not only time consuming but also poses the potential for human error when dictating dimensions. With Adnexxus dimensions are pulled straight from the Tekla model, proving to be the most accurate way to program a machine tool.

Greg Carpenter Systems Manager Is it true that you worked for a steel detailer before joining the Peddinghaus team? Before Peddinghaus I was a steel detailer for a local structural fabricator. I can remember we operated one of the original Peddinghaus beam punch lines, and several Peddinghaus Ironworkers. In my role I detailed commercial buildings, schools, highway utilities, and other miscellaneous steel work. This experience helps me relate with the challenges our customers face on a daily basis. I am proud to have been with Peddinghaus for a little over 22 years now. In that time I have been involved in everything from mechanical engineering to system layout and design.

What exactly does the Peddinghaus System Engineering group provide to Peddinghaus customers? Bryan Martin, Systems Engineer and I help customers setup their shops, and layout their production to achieve their fullest potential. When it comes to a Peddinghaus installation every shop is unique, and deserves special consideration. In our department we see it all – green grass projects, existing buildings with tight spaces, outside handling layouts, new equipment integrated with existing systems, new machines integrated with competitive lines, and even direct swap-outs of older equipment in times of an upgrade. We lend our experience to each Peddinghaus partner ensuring they get the most out of their machine tool investment.
What are some typical problems fabricators experience when it comes to material handling?
Greg’s expertise is in processing big tonnages in small spaces.
Consider this scenario: 1. Invest in a multi spindle drill line as a standalone machine 2. Add a saw to create a tandem installation for added cutting versatility 3. Split the drill and saw apart for added efficiency 4. In the future additional equipment such as an automated coper, or an additional sawing system can be added “downstream” for even greater capacity. You can quickly see how the investment in a single machine has the potential to grow over time into a powerful production system.
I can speak from experience that handling material with a crane can turn into a bad habit, especially if this is your first experience with automation. We all need to remember that every time we pick up material with a crane we are slowing down production! By using a crane to handle material you are taking it away from other processes in your shop, people have to wait until the area is clear of your lift, and commonly the person operating that crane is not operating the machine they should be running! Crane handling stifles productivity, and commonly costs at minimum $50 per lift when you take all of these factors into account.
What advantages does Peddinghaus equipment present fabricators that people may not know about? Peddinghaus equipment is incredibly modular. There is no gripper carriage to struggle with so equipment can be purchased and expanded over time, allowing fabricators to grow at their own pace. Now take into account that every part of the system can have its material handling stored outside – keeping the machines in small, manageable buildings. This kind of overhead cost and floor space savings is only possible with the Peddinghaus roller feed advantage!
Can you give us an example of how you improved a fabricator’s efficiency using Peddinghaus technology? We had one customer who found themselves struggling with space because they had originally elected to store all equipment inside of their building. They found themselves with limited space for welding and fit up, and wrestling with indoor material storage!

Now they store equipment and material outside, away from internal operations. This was a huge success! Trucks unload outside in stock yard and do not interfere with other operations. As machines operate they feed finished materials into the shop for final layout, fit up, and welding operations. They quickly maximized their tonnage per square foot of shop space, and increased the return on their investment for the facility!
