2 de julho masterplan 2 de Julho is a neighbourhood Located in Salvador’s historical centre, Bahia. It’s great views towards the sea and strategic location within the city have been driving a massive gentrification process in the place. The relatively low density of the community and the already existing infrastructures of the site were key factors to the development of a masterplan. The project aimed a redesign of the neighbourhood from the perspective of their present residents but which also allowed and prepared the site for more dense occupation. Through research with the locals and the tracing of various narratives, The masterplan developed a sense of identity which lacks in the current government planing. Spaces and Connections were the main drivers of the plan. The idea was to reassemble the site, which presents a speed highway and a strong topography slope dividing it, and its both existing and future planned infrastructures. The rethinking of the community’s squares and plazas looked for a more optimized use by the many groups of inhabitants, commerciaries, residents, children, and addressed the issues of security and violence through architectural and urban design. Flexibility and nonregulated design were also key to the project. The manner that old people playing chess, ephemeral structures of street commerce and wooden tables of bars occupy the square, with densities that change on the day/ night, weekdays/weekends basis was taken into account for the role it plays in site and its identity. Between the planned and the unplanned, 2 de rethinks identity’s role in Salvador’s new developments.

2 de julho SOCIAL Housing 2 de Julho’s interest in a social housing comes from the present hospitals, schools, transport facilities and other infrastructures already present in the site. Developed as a continuous design process of the masterplan, the building presents in its conception many of the same interests which drove the project at the urban scale. Flexibility and Identity are taken to the level of self construction. The idea of a house which is designed for self-constructed ampliations, exhausted by architects such as Alejandro Aravena, takes here a vertical approach. The flats (accessible not included) are designed without partitions and with a double ceiling height, allowing for the inhabitants to choose their own furniture, layout... Three meter spans permit easily constructible floors. Hydraulic facilities and stairs already installed make possible to build with minimum effort. Through this decisions, the project obtains, besides flexibility, a sense of identity lacking in most of government housing projects. Formally, The building is comes from the stacking of blocks (flats), which differ in length and height according to family types and accessibility. While still maintaining a optimized structure series of cantilevers and voids are generated by the operation. A slight rotation of the blocks aims better ventilation and less sun exposition. The result is a building that, in its form and program, shows the role community should play in design decisions. The project is a experiment in what lacks at the neighbourhood current developments, identity.

AA visiting school AA’s 2013 São Paulo visiting school had as a theme the drawing of future scenarios for Campo de Marte’s site, currently a private flight airport in city centre. The place, really close to the polluted city’s canal Tietê, presented future potentials, with the planning of a high-speed train station and the many possible revitalizations of the river. Taking both precise reality data and delirious forward thinking, the team tried to develop a plan which changed spatial conditions in time. The project had as a main feature the generation of new topographies based on the piling up of construction waste. The waste, leftover from demolished buildings and constructions in general, would arrive from the Hidroanel, an existing plan which makes a ring of navigable waters through Tietê and other rivers in the city. By receiving the dumped material, the site not only makes money, but develops a spatial condition in constant growth, which them affects uses, paths of access, water flows and so on. Analyses of the site, in present and future time, inform and change de design, studying uses according to slope, wind... Buildings and landscape are generated at the same time, taking in account the radiuses and speeds of the machinery and the yearly amount of waste. Between an understanding of real conditions and the ability to suggest new futures, Campo de Marte rises as a new way of linking spaces and developments through urban planning. Japanise restaurant Studies of transparency drove the this project for a Japanese restaurant in Rio vermelho, a bohemian area in Salvador. The concept driving the project was that of the illusions of transparency, which is achieved by nontransparent but reflective materials. The relationship between metallic sheets guides the look of observers up, keeping degrees of privacy for the users. From the inside, the short distance and lower position of the table area doesn’t allow the “periscopes” to function properly, keeping a calm and isolated environment. Issues of the site’s size and logistical relationships in industrial kitchens were also taken into account, making for a functional project which tries to simplify complexities inherent to this kinds of project.
