This studio aims to understand what a concept means, how it shapes architecture and the world around us. There is always an idea behind a space. It also aims to understand every place can become a concept for a habitable space. Fisrt the student must study an architectural building, and find the “concept” behind the
building. He must start by understading its composition, followed by a reconstruction. Second, a context is to be transformed into space inside a 10cmx10cm cube.

Located at Palms Springs, California, the house designed and constructed by the architect Richard Neutra is coinsidered symbolic of modern architecture. With horizontal planes, Neutra manages to construct a house which seems to float on the Californian desert. The house is composed by 2 central axis which intersect at the hous living room. Every room of the house is located on one of this axis, however, they act as individual elements in the terrain. The spaces are well connected through terraces wich merge interior with exterior.

Located in Medellin, Colombia, “Comuna 13 is known municipaly by its very inclined topography. When a site recognition was developed, it was observed that this characteristic helped shape the people who live here into versatile and resilient persons. The comuna is famous for the amount of houses it has, considering how limited its space is. People in the area take use of every little space available.

Conceptual Models
The process is started by developing a series of spatial oportunities with what was viewed at Comuna 13. Five three-dimensional models became 1 observable figure. This figure was though of like a cube, and its 6 facades were drawn. This drawings became sides of an unfolded cube, which can create a habitable space folding it on both sides.

Sucecsfully develop a proyect as an applied investigation, where urban, technic, contextual and practic approaches come together with the conviction that an architecture proyect must be creative, and pertinent. The studio aims to improve site comprehension and the capacity to build an idea with the premises of functional relations that shape an architectural proyect, searching interior and exterior spaciality from structural logics. The students must start by studying the ur-

ban context of the plant site, located in one of the most traditional districs of Medellin, Campo Valdes. They must then identify potential design strategies to finally porpose a public use building which suits the necesities of the area.

The shape created with by grouping living units permits 3 diferents atmospheres that share a circulation, giving the space a versatile program.
The building counts with an interior facade, which has acces to both service area and garden area. Every living unit has individual acces.
A third space is limited by the residential area and the perimeter of the building. This space contains services and a wide circulation.
Living units are grouped and shapen so that an interior space is cerated. This space functions as a “comunal backyard”

SITE ANALISIS
Funded in 1930, Campo Valdes, is one of the most well known traditional districs of Medellin. It is located on the northeastern side of the city, placing it in a privilaged closeness to the city center. It is adjacent to city famous “Jardin BotĂĄnicoâ€? , making it a very well located neighborhoud Its population consists of middle-class working people, with the majority being ages 55 and older. The proyect site, signaled in red, is to be one of the 7 proyects

conforming the urban intervention to be developed in the studio, designed to bring back life to the districts water sources and return them to the districs population.
Demographics
25
Vegetation Green masses account of the lowest temperature areas, and these tend to follow the water sources in the area.
Sound Being close to the city center, noise pollution can reach high levels in the area, making the inside of the urban blocks the most quiet areas.
Accesibility The urban squares are permeable, making it easy for the inside to be accesed. This creates a semi-public space on their inside.
Temperature Water sources and green spaces cool down the district, again, making the inside of the district blocks the most calm.
Distric Blocks Campo Valdes is made up of 80x80m blocks, with exceptions on those on which water sources are present.
Topography The districts topography shows various water sources being canalized in important areas, giving the oportunity for a design strategy.

TRANSFER
After studying both Santa Rita Geriatric Center and the plan site’s urban context, a common concept was found. The case study building manages to create a space completely accesible for everyone, and most importantly, the building counts with a “backyard” inside the building. 2 spaces merge as one to create an exterior inside a building. This same idea will be the foundation for the design descitions taken. This idea was materialized in the “habitable sculpture” shown.

S. IV Public Space Location: La Estrella, Antioquia, Colombia Prof. Catalina Montoya catalina.montoyaarenas@ upb.edu.co Winter 2016 Academic Distinction 2nd: Honorable Mention (Best public space proyect)

The studio’s objective is to develop diferent scales of analisis and design of a public space proyect. A detailed investigation must pave way to a detailed public space proposal for the municipality of La Estrella. At a large scale, students must work in group to develop a large public structure proposal. The students must identify the diferent systems that conform a public structure and develop ideas for improvement on each one of them. This ideas must later come together to
Achitecture Design Studio III
form a large scale proposal of public space for La Estrella. This excersice will then be followed by an individual development of a proyect inside the public space structure.

The following proyect is part of the Studio’s aim to understand public space. A large scale proposal is to be made, after understanding the structure of a municipality in 6 sistems: Socio- Cultural, Public Space, Equipments, Morfology, Mobility and Accesibility, and most importantly, Natural Structure. After carefully analising each sistem, a proposal must be made within each one of them.

Natural Structure This sistem is understanded as the base to formulate a logical public space proposal. Lineal parcks are determined throguhout the water sources, this lineal parcks delimit the consolidated zone of “La Estrella. A green transversality is
planned to break thorugh the city to form nodes of public activity. In addition, interior blocks will be activated as public space, giving pedestrians priority. 8 public space proyects are to be formulated to develop a public space city plan.
