Become A Local Hero What is a Local Hero? Local Hero’s are people who have raised funds for Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland through organising their own fundraising event with the support of CHSS. Without them we would not be able to raise the money necessary to do the work we do. So are you ready to take up the task and make a difference by becoming a Local Hero for Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland?
Why Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland? Chest related problems account for more calls on health service resources than any other illness There are approximately 13,000 new strokes in Scotland each year. Of these approximately 3,000 are in someone under 65. Coronary Heart Diesease is one of the most common causes of death in Scotland. Throughout the country the prevalence of the associated risk factors (e.g. smoking, diet and physical inactivity) is high and around 8.2% of men and 6.5% of women are living with coronary heart disease.
The charity needs to raise ÂŁ5million per year to provide services to those affected by these illnesses. We improve the quality of life of people affected by chest, heart and stroke illness through medical research, advice and information and support in the community. [Shopping list] Remember, every penny counts and even the smallest contribution makes a big difference to the lives of thousands of people across Scotland. And money raised in Scotland stays in Scotland!

What can you do? There is no limit to what you can do to raise funds for Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland. You could do something at work, at school, at home‌ anything! There is one rule in raising money and becoming a Local Hero: If you can think it, then you can do it for Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland!

Spread the word! One of the best ways to ensure you’re event is a success is to make sure it’s well attended. So to help you, here are our top tips for promoting your fundraiser.
1.Make sure people know WHO you’re doing it for 2.Tell all your friends and family; word of mouth is a great way of spreading the news. 3.Go online; create a page on Facebook, Twitter, My Space, Just Giving, Gumtree etc and let your friends know. Remember to let us know too. We have pages on many sites - remember to link to us! Email everyone in your address book and get them to forward it on!
Keep it short and simple and remember the 5 W’s. WHY you’re holding an event WHO you’re supporting. WHAT is the event WHEN is it WHERE is it
4.Use posters and flyers; download/order posters or flyers from our website. Customise the poster with your event’s details and stick them up at the local supermarket, church, school etc. Flyers are useful - if people can take something away with them they are more likely to act upon it. 5.Contact your local media; phone your local media and ask them if you can send them a press release. How about arranging a photo call? Set up small photo shoot and ask press along – it might bring you more success, especially on a Sunday when local papers are slow.
