Welcome... …to Summer 2009 at Winchester’s flagship theatre. It’s not that we like to name drop but somehow we can’t help it. You see, the people of Winchester (and surrounding district) know what they like, they like to see British stars, such as, oh I don’t know, June Whitfield, Nicholas Parsons and Julian Clary for example. They demand high quality theatre with a mix of bleedin’ edge drama (Blackbird page 5) through to light-hearted musicals (Women on the Verge of HRT page 6) and everything in between. We also know that our customers come in all ages and we have a summer programme to match. From magical children’s theatre The Tiger Who Came To Tea (page 8) to the fabulous return of those Grumpy Old Women (page 10).
Theatre Royal Winchester is supported by the Winchester Arts Trust Ltd (Formerly Winchester Theatre Fund) Registered charity number: 1099252. Registered in England 03696681. The Live Theatre Winchester Trust. Registered charity number 1077139. VAT No. 744 8764 89
Now I know we don’t look a day over 21 but TRW will shortly be celebrating its 95th birthday - where does the time go? In celebration, a new book on the history of the theatre will be launched on 24 August and we’re planning a bit of a bash on Saturday, 5 September. All the details will be listed on our smashing website www.theatreroyalwinchester.co.uk Feel free to send a card....cheques are also welcome. Are you short of a pal to go to the theatre with? Don’t let this put you off, oh no. Look out for the Solo theatre goers logo...like the one on the left... It’s dead easy, when you book your tickets, simply tell the lovely folk at the Box Office you’re one of the select crowd of Solo theatre goers and they’ll sort you out with a lil’ glass of wine and introduce you to like minded people on the night. This isn’t a dating service (what are you suggesting? we’re not like that!)
but it is a great chance to chat with other Solo theatre goers about the performances, production values and the very reasonable price of the ice creams. Give it a go! If the living is easy and the fish are jumping where you are, you’re going to love the music at Theatre Royal this summer. We’re delighted to welcome Dark Angel, Camille O’Sullivan (page 10), pluck The Specialists (page 15) and the stunning Tangomotion care of Tango Siempre (page 11). And so, may I invite you to take a little time out of your busy day and choose your summer treats from the amazing array of live music, comedy, drama, children’s theatre and superstars this summer? Go on, pop the kettle on, dig out the Jaffa cakes, put your feet up and wait for the cotton to get high. I look forward to welcoming you. Fiona Burn Chief Executive P.S. A HUGE thank you to Whitwams for its generous support of our fantastic in-house production Speed The Plow in March.

Presented by Tabs Productions
Taking the theme of his brilliant book What’s Going On?, BAFTA award-nominated comedian Mark Steel is back on tour this spring with a brand new show. Upon entering his forties, Mark’s personal life began to disintegrate. Spending many sleepless nights on the sofa, watching inane cable TV into the early hours, Mark asked himself the question, What’s Going On? His new show goes right to the heart of Britain and the problems it suffers today. Bitingly funny, poignant, sharply observed and very much of the moment, this is Mark Steel at his brilliantly intelligent best. Tickets: Comedy Club: Concessions: Friends: Age recommendation:

Book Online www.theatreroyalwinchester.co.uk
Best friends Vera and Anna have a few things in common – being the ‘wrong’ side of 40, husband troubles and a love of Irish singing sensation Daniel O’Donnell, to name but a few. During a trip to Donegal to see their idol in concert, Vera and Anna come face to face with the realities of their lives – loveless marriages, husbands in the clutches of mid-life crises, the menopause (or should that be “mental pause”) and the prospect of being thrown on the sexual scrapheap.
Feisty and funny, Women on the Verge of HRT was a huge hit with audiences and critics alike when it was last produced on tour and in the West End. This hilarious, racy and sometimes painful look into the lives of two women on the verge was written by Marie Jones who also wrote the Olivier and Evening Standard Award-winning comedy Stones in His Pockets.

If you‘ve ever wondered whether your family heirlooms or junk shop finds are worth anything, now is your chance to get an expert valuation from a renowned auction house. Whether you are thinking of selling an item or just want to discover more about its provenance, bring it along for a professional appraisal. So dust off granny’s old vase, Great Uncle Alfred’s stamp collection or the writing desk that’s been in the family for generations and see whether you’ve been sitting on a fortune.
From virtuoso displays of traditional tango dance to the exquisite sounds of 1930s Buenos Aires and the powerful Nuevo Tango music of Astor Piazzolla, Tangomotion is a breathtaking journey into the heart of Tango Argentino.
Following the rapturous, sell-out reception of her critically acclaimed show, The Dark Angel, at London’s legendary Roundhouse Theatre in January ‘09 and a show-stopping appearance on the BBC’s Later With Jools Holland, multi-award-winning Irish/French chanteuse Camille O’Sullivan takes the show on its debut UK tour. With 5-star sell-out seasons in London, New York, Sydney Opera House and Edinburgh, this charismatically unique performer presents the work of Nick Cave, Jacques Brel, David Bowie, Tom Waits and many others in her very own distinctively fascinating style.

An Evening with...Nicholas Parsons -
Thurs 2 July 8:00pm King Pleasure and the Biscuit Boys are more than just the world’s greatest swing band, they are an institution! The band has been on the road for two decades playing every European country as well as the USA and Russia and recording ten CDs. Dazzling musicianship, riveting stage performances, more than 50 TV appearances (including, somewhat bizarrely, five episodes of Teletubbies) and 75 radio broadcasts have established them as the Kings of Swing. Paul Jones on BBC Radio 2 called them “the hardest act to follow since the parting of The Red Sea.”

Join Nicholas Parsons, radio & TV star, comedian, entertainer and chairman of BBC Radio 4’s Just A Minute for an incredible 37 years (and counting!) as he reminisces about his life and career. In this entertaining and vibrant show, Nicholas takes his audience on a humorous and nostalgic journey through the often hysterically funny memorabilia of his long and eventful life, seeing the funny side of every situation as he highlights, with superb observation, the events that have shaped his career.
A surprisingly fabulous mimic and impressionist, he not only recalls the incidents and events, he re-creates them with vivid impersonations of the famous personalities involved and shows why he has such a massive following, from students to OAPs, who are all regularly glued to his BBC Radio 4 broadcasts. The Spirit of the Black Rose tour 2009
Renowned for an action-packed pyrotechnic-fuelled explosion of a show, Limehouse Lizzy continues to keep the spirit of Celtic rock icon Philip Lynott and his band Thin Lizzy alive, well and dominating stages worldwide. Attention to detail, playful audience interaction and that all-important X-factor that leaves you with the feeling of witnessing the real thing, have led to their performance being described as “beyond tribute”, by both audiences and critics alike. For 2009, the Spirit of the Black Rose tour continues to explore and
celebrate the artistic and musical legacy of the hard-living, hard-rocking, yet at times, surprisingly tender and romantic artist that was Philip Lynott. Expect more of the Celtic influenced tracks like Whisky in the Jar and Black Rose, amongst the usual razzamatazz and classic tracks The Boys are Back in Town, Sarah and many others we have come to expect from one of the most highly-rated acts on the circuit. Five groups meet weekday evenings. Participants can expect to learn a range of drama skills including improvising, devising and working from scripts. With a performance at the end of term on-stage at Theatre Royal Winchester.
Preoccupations
17 July - 24 Aug Miriam Troth and Diane Roberts return with a new exhibition of recent work. These two artists differ in their approach but often collaborate. Preoccupations shows individual responses to their particular concerns. In Miriam’s paintings, layers of colour and graphic marks are gradually refined and edited, the original concept may lose its identity having served as a starting point to a resolution. Diane uses a combination of screen printing and traditional easel painting techniques. The result is blended in such a way that the painting is a magical mixture of solid and misty forms.
