Welcome... …to Autumn 2008 at Winchester’s flagship theatre. If you, like me, believe the ‘credit crunch’ would be more fun as a family biscuit, then this is the brochure for you. Gas, petrol and food are frankly soooo last year! I think a better idea would be to forget the crashing boredom of near financial ruin and come to the theatre instead... we’ll have the heating on! Forget your worries for a couple of hours and bathe in the warm glow of creativity at its most entertaining, challenging, foot-tapping, belly-laughing and panto-tastic. Here at Theatre Royal Winchester we pride ourselves on bringing the good folk of Winchester (and surrounding district) the very best in quality dance and drama and this season is no exception. Following the wonderful Abigail’s Party of last year, London Classic Theatre Company returns with the award-winning production Humble Boy (page 8). The new Random Dance work Entity, choreographed by Wayne McGregor, features on our front cover (page 10) whilst Pilot Theatre returns with its mind-blowing production of Lord of The Flies (page 11). Trestle Theatre Company, famed for their masked performances, perform for once unmasked in their production of Lola (page 10).

Ever have trouble getting your little ones off to sleep? Then you need expert help from our friends at Big Wooden Horse Theatre Company with Don’t let the Pigeon Stay Up Late (page 13). Also for children and their adults those Vile Victorians and Terrible Tudors pay a visit to TRW with the smash Horrible Histories show featuring the ‘must be seen to be believed’ Bogglevision (page 17). Last but by no means least is the highlight of the calendar, the Theatre Royal Winchester pantomime Beauty and The Beast! With jokes and japes, hisses and boos, enchantments and curses and some roof-raising original songs Beauty and the Beast is guaranteed panto fun for the whole family. Oh yes it is! I look forward to welcoming you all soon. Fiona Burn Chief Executive

Show of Hands is undeniably one of the strongest current forces in acoustic music. As England’s finest and most popular roots duo and something of a “people’s band”, they regularly voice in song the hopes, fears and life stories of scores of people. An alchemist couldn’t have come up with a more potent, magical mix than that of Phil Beer, who can, as The Scotsman observed, “play nearly every stringed instrument known to man” and the inspired Steve Knightley, described by Mike Harding at BBC Radio 2’s 2007 Folk Awards as “one of England’s greatest singer songwriters”.

Winchester Operatic Society presents the bittersweet Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, Carousel. With well-known standards like “June is Bustin’ Out All Over”, “If I loved You” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone”, you’ll be whistling and humming all the way home. The show is often considered almost operatic in nature, such is the strength of its music and the power of the dark love story at its core between the heroine, the young, innocent Julie Jordan and the rough, misguided but well-meaning anti-hero Billy Bigelow, the carousel’s barker.

Linda Hasking Wed 20 Sep – Fri 24 Oct On exhibition during September and October is work, both old and new, by Winchester trained printmaker Linda Hasking. Here she shows pieces illustrating her interest in the significance of the commonplace object. The Make Do & Mend Series, shown here earlier in the year as part of Women’s Work, is joined by other pieces in her favoured technique, digital print, combined with blind emboss. The result has qualities both photographic and abstracted.
