JOHN DOWER HOUSE Dating back to 1812, John Dower House has been carefully renovated and restored. The rear faรงade has been refurbished, the staircase has been reinstated and the building now houses 11 spacious apartments. L AT H E R A M H O U S E A collection of 67 apartments are divided across two buildings, which have been thoughtfully designed to reference the red-brick faรงades and stone detailing of nearby architecture. The buildings house a lounge, social kitchen and comfortable guest suite.

A
rchitects Proctor and Matthews have drawn on the idea of hidden spaces and moments of transition in their design for Clarence Gardens. They have used the distinct shapes of the four buildings to create various pockets of space in the form of courtyards, paths and walkways across the site. While these spaces bring together the different areas at Clarence Gardens, they also connect with the surrounding area and local community. Open during the day, a public pathway leads between the buildings from Crescent Place to St George’s Place. Another walkway offers views of the nearby minster and the library, creating natural transitions between public and private space.

THE STORY OF
A SPA TOWN
T
he story of Cheltenham Spa began in the early 1700s, when locals observed birds pecking at salt deposits by a spring to the south of the town. People became convinced that the waters would cure their ailments and began drinking from the spring. Latching on to this trend, landowner Henry Skillicorne turned the spring into a well, lined it with an avenue of trees and built the Assembly Rooms nearby, where people would play cards and dance at balls. Word of the water in Cheltenham travelled fast. In 1740, a man named Dr Short wrote a book in which he praised the water from Cheltenham’s well. It wasn’t long before visitors were travelling from far and wide to sample the medicinal waters. Soon after the turn of the century, new spas were created, including Montpellier Spa and Sherborne Spa. This attracted yet more visitors and sparked rapid development across the town. The Royal Crescent was completed in 1810, the Promenade was laid out as a tree-lined walk in 1818 and the Pittville Pump Room was built in 1830. Further developments led to the installation of water pipes and sewers in the mid 1800s, meaning the spas gradually became less important. But their mark had been made. Today, Cheltenham’s spa heritage is still very much intact, and the spa waters can still be sampled free of charge at the Pittville Pump Room.

On Bath Rd, VW Lane Butchers supplies the people of Cheltenham with local, organic meats, while the fortnightly farmers’ market is the place to go for fresh fruit and veg. The family-run CheeseWorks on Regent St prides itself on offering customers a friendly, personal experience and stocks produce from the best local, national and European suppliers. For all its culinary offerings, Cheltenham’s selection of independents extends beyond food shops. Open since 1992, Moss Books buys and sells second-hand books spanning such diverse topics as transport, wildlife, crime fiction and poetry. For all other literary needs, Cheltenham’s library is just down the road from Clarence Gardens. When it comes to culture, Cheltenham has plenty to offer. heltenham’s calendar is packed with a diverse selection of events throughout the year, from music festivals and theatre to horse racing and flower shows. Every spring, the Gold Cup draws people from across the country to witness the highlight of the jump racing season. Cheltenham Racecourse also kicks off the racing season with the New Year’s Day Races. Renowned for its jazz scene, Cheltenham brings together international jazz and blues artists for the Jazz Festival at the end of April. The music continues into summer, with the Cheltenham Music Festival hosting genres spanning classical, symphonic, folk and electronica. Come autumn, the Literature Festival draws literary figures from the worlds of fiction, politics, drama and comedy to Cheltenham for this ten-day celebration. One of the most popular aspects of the festival is the Big Read, which brings people together to discuss the festival’s chosen novel at a number of book groups and special events.
