WILDERNESSE HOUSE
Introducing
WILDERNESSE HOUSE Surrounded by rolling Kent countryside, the Wildernesse estate has borne witness to great moments and characters of English history. A chestnut tree planted in 1509 to celebrate Henry VIII’s first marriage gives shade to the estate’s pathways, while an avenue of lime trees stands in commemoration of a visit from the Duke of Wellington in 1815. Throughout the centuries, the Wildernesse estate has been owned and adapted by the Quintin, Bickerstaffe, Camden and Hillingdon families – each leaving a tangible impression on the house and its grounds. Today, Wildernesse House has been restored to its full glory. Four ground-floor apartments have been named after former owners of the estate, and a collection of apartments and mews houses has been designed to preserve and emphasise the estate’s history. A modern spa is home to a swimming pool, loungers and treatment rooms, while a new restaurant in the extensive grounds celebrates the house’s historic architectural features.

WILDERNESSE HOUSE
The
BICKERSTAFFE STORY In 1680, the first incarnation of Wildernesse House was built under the direction of Sir Charles Bickerstaffe. As owners of the estate between 1669 and 1705, Bickerstaffe and his family played a pivotal role in shaping the house and its grounds. Bickerstaffe, who was Clerk of the Privy Seal, was a notable character in local history, and his and his wife’s tombs can be seen today at Seal Church.
House. Restoration work for the apartment is dominated by the recreation of the house’s original entrance. A modern extension has been removed and replaced with a sensitive replica entrance, which provides access to the private terrace. In the bedroom, the original marble fireplace has been maintained, making for a timeless addition to the room’s layout. Fitted wardrobes surround the ensuite bathroom, and the original timber window shutters have been preserved and highlighted.
Located on the west side of the ground floor, the one-bedroom Bickerstaffe apartment occupies the former entrance hall. It is accessed through a doorway that evokes the original main entrance to Wildernesse

WILDERNESSE HOUSE
The
CAMDEN STORY In 1705, Wildernesse House was acquired by Lord Camden. Extending the house and the grounds considerably, Lord Camden oversaw the construction of the south part of the existing house and installed an impressive library. But Wildernesse House wasn’t the only place on which the Camdens left a lasting impression. In 1790, Earl Camden inherited some land near Kentish Town in North London, where he built what we now know as Camden Town – and named numerous streets there after his family.
it occupies served as the house’s drawing room and library in Lord Camden’s era, and plenty of the 18th century decorative details remain to this day. The restoration has preserved certain features of the original library. Consequently, timber book cabinets are built into the walls and French windows look out onto the decorative gardens. In the living area, the original marble fireplace has been maintained and restored, along with the decorative moulded ceiling. Intricate plasterwork on the cornicing and over the door casements has been preserved and woven into the new apartment’s decor.
The Camdens owned the Wildernesse estate for 150 years and hints of their styling are still present in the twobedroom apartment. The Camden apartment has undergone a detailed and extensive restoration. The historic rooms
Restoration work has also been carried out to keep the building’s original shutters and doors, which open up onto a large private terrace.

WILDERNESSE HOUSE
The
HILLINGDON STORY By the end of 1886, Wildernesse House had been substantially rebuilt and extended under the guidance of Lord Hillingdon. His redevelopment saw the gardens terraced to accommodate a cricket ground and golf course, as well as the construction of the estate’s magnificent coach house and clock tower made from Kentish ragstone. Many original features from Lord Hillingdon’s era and earlier can still be found throughout the main house.
– just as Lord Hillingdon would have done during his lifetime. The restoration process has preserved and highlighted the original timber panels stretching across the walls and ceiling of the living area, bringing the space tastefully up to date while maintaining its original character. The original fireplaces in the living area and the snug have been retained, as have the wooden window shutters and the building’s original doors and casements.
The Hillingdon apartment on the ground floor epitomises the rich history of the house. A grand, panelled affair spread across the old drawing room and dining room, the apartment has ornate details from the 18th and 19th centuries. You can access the private terrace from the living area’s French doors and enjoy views across the formal lawn, croquet lawn and fountain
In the apartment’s bedrooms, the walls feature ornate cornicing and wall pilasters, originating from the house’s 18th century drawing room. These details have been faithfully restored and subtly incorporated into the apartment’s new layout.

The
QUINTIN STORY Although the first incarnation of Wildernesse House was inhabited by the Bickerstaffe family in the 1670s, there are records noting certain owners of the estate before this time.
apartment is situated on the east side of Wildernesse House, offering views across the grounds and designed in a way that brings its 19th century details up to date. The interiors have been faithfully preserved during the renovation process. Both the living area and the bedroom have a fully restored marble fireplace, which form a centrepiece to each room.
Hasted’s The History and Topographical Survey of the County of Kent, a survey of the county undertaken at the end of the 18th century, mentions a Robert de Stidulfe, who was recorded in 1327 as the proprietor of Stidulfe’s Place, Seal. In 1433, William Stidulfe sold Stidulfe’s Place to a William Quintin, and the Quintin family were still the owners in 1509 when chestnut trees were planted to celebrate Henry VIII’s marriage to Catherine of Aragon. Today, these ancient trees remain on the grounds and in full view of the Quintin apartment. The generously sized one-bedroom
The house’s original doors and window shutters have also been retained throughout the new apartment. They have been tastefully adapted into the apartment’s new design. The walls feature ornate cornicing, and the original lath and plaster ceiling is still in place.
