Dear Community Members, Friends and CHA Supporters, In December 2015, the two healthcare centers known as Pen Bay Medical Center (PBMC) and Waldo County General Hospital (WCGH) began providing shared services to the entire region through a new entity named Coastal Healthcare Alliance (CHA). The combined entity includes the two hospitals, the practices of Pen Bay Physicians and Associates and Waldo County Medical Partners, the Knox Center, Quarry Hill and Penobscot Shores. Together, we operate as one of the largest employers in the Midcoast with more than 2,000 colleagues throughout Knox and Waldo Counties.

Healthcare is changing every day.

President and CEO Mark Biscone has been on the forefront of those changes, leading the two facilities in unprecedented growth and expansion. We have successfully recruited more than 40 providers across the Midcoast in oncology, orthopedics, dermatology, rheumatology, emergency and family medicine, as well as other service areas.

This fall marks the exciting opening of the Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) on the WCGH campus. This state-of-the-art facility will house a team of healthcare professionals dedicated to keeping patients healthy year-round through preventative care and chronic disease management, in an effort to avoid costly complications and hospitalizations.

For 38 years Mark Biscone has lead WCGH, one of the most financially sound critical access hospitals in the country. Since 2014, Mark 1

has shared his passion for performance with PBMC and now CHA. In just over two years, Mark and his team have brought the two hospitals together operationally in more than 70 areas. Mark has managed the seamless merger of these two organizations while preparing for his retirement. It goes without saying that we will miss his energy, his optimism and his ceaseless quest for excellence for Coastal Healthcare Alliance. We are grateful for all he has done to safeguard healthcare in our community. He will leave his role as president and CEO in December and the board of trustees wishes to thank him and send him best wishes for his retirement.

In preparation for Mark’s departure, a search committee was formed to find the next CHA president and CEO. After an exhaustive nationwide search, we are pleased to welcome Mark Fourre, MD to this position.

As the current Chief Health Affairs Officer for the entire MaineHealth system, he understands the needs of Maine patients. Values Action

MaineHealth Shared Values In 2016, MaineHealth had a focused goal of developing a common set of values across the entire MaineHealth system. The MaineHealth Values Committee, which included representatives from each of the member organizations, met regularly over five months to gather input and develop a set of recommended values reflecting shared beliefs across the system.

The committee began with an audit of existing values at all member organizations. Leadership teams and engagement councils at each member organization were asked to rank the top 10 values in order of importance and the results were tabulated and brought back to the committee. The committee discussed these results and unanimously selected a set of recommended values. In June, the MaineHealth Leadership Team approved the following recommended shared values for the system:

In fall 2016, delegates from across the MaineHealth system gathered input at their respective organizations regarding the behaviors that best reflect these values. At a system-wide caucus in November 2016, these 200+ delegates shared their findings and worked together to finalize the behavior expectations. We look forward to bringing these values to life in our hospitals in fiscal year 2017.

In addition to the generous financial support of our donors and the Pen Bay Waldo Healthcare Foundation, as members of MaineHealth, PBMC and WCGH benefit from increased purchasing power for the newest technologies. We have focused significant resources on the expansion of imaging services. We expanded day, evening and weekend hours for patient convenience in the areas of mammography, CT scan, MRI and ultrasound. We invested in state-of-the-art breast health technology with the installation of digital mammography with 3D capabilities and we installed wide bore MRI technology at both campuses. In 2017, we will see continued expansion with the installation of nuclear SPECT technology, as well as a digital fluoroscopy unit upgrade.

Stroke Care In 2015, Waldo County General Hospital joined the MaineHealth TeleStroke Network, followed by Pen Bay Medical Center in 2016. The TeleStroke Network provides 24/7 access to 11 volunteer, board-certified neurologists from Maine Medical Partners and Pen Bay Medical Center for emergent video consultation to facilitate the diagnosis and management of acute stroke patients.

Together with the partner hospitals’ champions, the TeleStroke Network team has done tremendous work on establishing a system of care to enhance and standardize stroke care across the TeleStroke Network and the state of Maine.

Continuous work is being done on the process and performance of the program, which is driven by the clinical champions at each location. These individuals share and review data and clinical feedback at steering committee meetings with the shared goal of elevating the standards of stroke care for the patients in our communities. Since joining the network, patients at these communities have an increased chance for Tissue Plasminogen Activator (TPA) consideration.

Community Health & Wellness

In April 2016, the Community Health & Wellness departments of Pen Bay Medical Center and Waldo County General Hospital officially became a regionalized department within Coastal Healthcare Alliance. Health education classes, screenings, events and outreach programs are now being offered across the region for our patients, community members and employees with support from both Pen Bay Medical Center, Waldo County General Hospital and the Pen Bay Waldo Healthcare Foundation. In the new year, Community Health & Wellness staff will begin to provide wellness services to local businesses.

The department sucessfully introduced an expanded Journey to Health program. This popular program offers low- and no-cost classes for the whole family that focus on healthy eating and cooking, physical movement and healthy mind and body. The classes are provided by our own certified health and wellness coaches, educators and professionals within our system as well as other health practitioners through partnerships in the community.

Classes are located throughout Knox and Waldo counties. Our Journey to Health program provides information, skills and support to empower participants to make positive lifestyle changes that will enhance their health and wellness.

Pen Bay Medical Center Community Wellness Trail

In September, Pen Bay Medical Center held the grand opening and naming ceremony for the Pen Bay Medical Center Community Wellness Trail. The 1.66 mile pet-friendly trail on the PBMC campus features nine fitness stations and is open to the community. The employees of Pen Bay Medical Center were the project’s largest donor—an honor recognized with trail naming rights. Pen Bay Waldo Healthcare Foundation would like to thank all the donors and supporters who made this important community project possible.

Special thanks to Viking Inc. for their contribution of lumber for bridges along the trail, CedarWorks for donating beautiful cedar benches and the town of Rockport for their municipal services contribution.

See it for yourself As I took my first steps, the Trail beckoned me on, curving through the woods, to high above the waters edge, the soft surf on the rocky beach below, occasional views of the medical center but mostly up slope and down dale meandering through the delight of the Maine coast.

This experience of less than an hour is available to us all, every day, whenever we want, made possible by the creative thoughtfulness and financial support of a broad range of people and businesses right here in the neighborhood. Donors of the bridges and the nine fitness stations are noted along the way and I understand the employees of Pen Bay Medical Center stepped up with a large part of the financial support. I commend and thank all those who made this adventure sanctuary happen. Its called The Community Wellness Trail.

Moving deeper into the sensory, comfortable walking connection to the earth, salty air, upbeat conversations with fellow hikers, woodland smells, increased heart rate; the significance of this new gift to our community grew in me.

Think of it: the grounds of a hospital being offered to the community, contributing to our health and well-being by leading us into and through the inspiration and abundant healing influence of nature.

The main entrance is across Route 1 from CedarWorks in Rockport with several other access points from the parking areas at Pen Bay Medical Center.

Walking the wood-chopped and grassy way for 1.6 miles gave me pleasure, stimulation, a good work-out, refreshment, enrichment and joy.

But, as Rob McCall of The Awanadjo Almanack says, don’t take my word for it, go out and see for yourself.

Community Benefit Report

In keeping with our vision and mission, MaineHealth and its member organizations offer a wide range of community programs and services free of charge, and no one is ever denied care due to the inability to pay. Each year MaineHealth produces the Community Benefit Report. The report provides facts and figures that reflect our substantial investment in our communities and shares just a few of the compelling stories about the people and families whose lives are touched by our community of care, as well as the dedicated people who provide that care.

Bringing Physical Activity “Around the World” and Into the Classroom

As a child, Jared Todd used to count down the minutes until each recess.

As a second grade teacher at Appleton Village School, he keeps that in mind when planning his curriculum.

In the fall of 2015, Let’s Go! 5-2-1-0 Knox County awarded Mr. Todd a Redy Award for his commitment, leadership and innovation in creating a healthy learning environment for all of his students by incorporating physical activity into every learning day.

“Winning that award really makes me want to walk the walk,” said Mr. Todd.

He tries to tie physical activities to lessons and even seasons whenever possible. He describes pairing movement with things that are measured on report cards, such as math skills. He uses games like “Around the World” that get students up and moving while they learn. Every October, he teaches kids the “Monster Mash” when students need to get their blood pumping and heart rates up after sitting at their desks. Last fall, the whole school did the dance together at a school-wide assembly.

Mr. Todd has been very influenced by the Let’s Go! 5-2-1-0 message. He remembers Adrienne Gallant, Let’s Go! 5-2-1-0 Knox County coordinator, giving a presentation about the program. She shared the importance of increasing fruit and vegetable intake, limiting recreational screen time, drinking plenty of water and moving more.

“Let’s Go! has done an outstanding job drawing attention to the relationship between healthy choices and success in school,” said Mr. Todd.

“Physical activity improves classroom behavior, increases student motivation and boosts academic achievement.”

“I try to put physical movement back into the day whenever I can,” said Mr. Todd.

Mr. Todd uses quick movement breaks throughout the day that don’t take away from instructional time, such as incorporating a physical activity while transitioning from one activity to another. He often sets up different workstations around the classroom and has students move from one to another as they work on tasks. He said the payback from taking these breaks is immediate. The kids come back calm, not as distracted and able to focus on their work.

While Mr. Todd has always believed in the importance of movement breaks, he said teachers face a lot of pressure to meet academic targets that can make it seem difficult to work such breaks in.

“Now, programs like Let’s Go! are really pushing these initiatives to be more active, and that helps give teachers permission to incorporate breaks into the curriculum,” said Mr. Todd. “You don’t have to sacrifice one for the other.”

Partnering on the Journey to Better Health

Two years ago, Carlene Brown made a choice. As the single mother of two prepared to watch her son graduate from high school, she realized that for the first time in nearly 20 years, she’d be on her own.

“What do I do when I don’t have kids to take care of?” Carlene wondered.

The class focused on goal setting, nutrition, mindful eating and weekly exercise sessions. Joining a group program was a big step for Carlene, who describes herself as not very social. She said Hester and Mirja, the health coaches who led the program, instantly put her at ease.

She decided to get healthy.

Several years earlier, Carlene was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Her demanding desk job left her inactive for most of the day, which she said caused her to gain a lot of weight. After talking to her doctor, she decided to sign up for Journey to a Healthier You, a group health coaching class offered

“They were so down-to-earth. We were all learning together,” said Carlene.

The support Carlene received from the program gave her confidence to make changes. When she wanted to try a Zumba class, one of the health coaches went with her to help her feel more comfortable.

“If I can do it, anybody can do it,” said Carlene. “Don’t be afraid to take that first step — it changed my life.”

“That was a turning point for me,” said Carlene. “I thought, ‘That was fun, I had a good time and now I’m going to try new things.’”

Carlene continued to attend exercise classes provided by the hospital’s Journey to Health program after the class ended, but over time she started to stray from her healthier eating and exercise habits. In May 2015, when a painful, swollen leg landed her in the emergency room, she had a wake-up call — she had a blood clot in her calf. The doctor told her that her sedentary job was a big contributing factor to the development of the clot.

After she recovered, she joined Journey to a Healthier You again.

After two years and two times through Journey to a Healthier You, Carlene has lost 117 pounds. But she measures her success in more than just weight loss.

Two years ago she was taking medications to manage her diabetes and high blood pressure. Over the course of her journey, her doctor has taken her off all of them. “If I can do it, anybody can do it,” said Carlene.

“Don’t be afraid to take that first step — it changed my life.”

“I was so mad at myself for not keeping up with the healthy changes I had made the first time around,” said Carlene.

“The second time it clicked — I need to change what I’m doing for good.”

Now Carlene makes time for exercise breaks throughout the day. She enjoys walking, running, Zumba, step aerobics, interval training, weights and hula-hooping. She now eats six small meals daily and focuses on eating whole foods to fuel her throughout the day.

Coming Soon

Waldo County General Hospital Emergency Department The provision of healthcare has changed significantly since the last Waldo County General Hospital Emergency Department (ED) expansion.

In those 20 years, technological upgrades have been made, but the footprint of the Emergency Department has remained unchanged; this despite a significant increase in patient volume.

We would like to share that plans are currently underway for a state-of-the-art renovation for the WCGH Emergency Department. The newly designed ED will enhance quality of care, patient privacy, expand treatment space, upgrade medical equipment, improve infection control and increase security, providing our medical treatment team with a facility that gives them tools and the space to best care for patients with life-threatening illnesses and injuries. The facility will also have a dedicated behavioral health area, which will allow providers to meet increasing, highly specialized behavioral health needs.

Pen Bay Medical Center SeHR - Shared Electronic Health Record Launch In January, Pen Bay Medical Center will join MaineHealth facilities across the state in transitioning to a new electronic health records system called SeHR – Shared Electronic Health Record.

With SeHR, accessing your medical record across the MaineHealth system will be much easier. This means fewer forms to fill out, no repeated tests or procedures and access to up-to-date health information in a secure online portal. No matter where you receive care within MaineHealth, clinicians will have the information they need to ensure the highest quality of care.

CarePartners, an innovative program led by MaineHealth, utilizes our local referral specialists in Belfast and Rockport to connect low-income and uninsured Mainers with free or low-cost healthcare services and care management. This past year, our local CarePartners staff helped 290 patients access necessary healthcare services in Knox and Waldo counties.

In addition to enrolling individuals in the CarePartners program, our local program has received grant funding to coordinate care for income-qualified individuals to receive mental health and substance abuse counseling for free, in partnership with Acadia Healthcare, Maine Behavioral Health and MAS Home Care. CarePartners also assists people with understanding and enrolling in the 2016 ACA Health Insurance Marketplace by providing educational and group enrollment sessions throughout Lincoln, Knox and Waldo counties.

Pen Bay Waldo Healthcare Foundation The Pen Bay Waldo Healthcare Foundation secures tax-deductible donations for capital structures, equipment, clinical programs and services, and the endowment to support Pen Bay Medical Center, Waldo County General Hospital and other members of the Coastal Healthcare Alliance. The Foundation builds lasting relationships with donors and engages the community in long-term support to sustain healthcare close to home.

In fiscal year 2016, the Foundation received more than $1,196,350 in new gifts and pledges. This includes gifts to both hospitals, the Belfast Public Health Nursing Association, the Knox Center, Quarry Hill, the Sussman House, nursing scholarships, mammography and oncology funds and other programs and services.

The Pen Bay Waldo Healthcare Foundation held its inaugural Summer Soiree in September at Front Street Shipyard to raise money for charity care at Pen Bay Medical Center and Waldo County General Hospital.

The Foundation works with many community partners who help raise funds for healthcare; from the Waldo County Hospital Aid to the Rockland Women’s Golf Association, our community partners are working with the Foundation to provide quality care for everyone.
