PBMC News and Events Pen Bay Medical Center Receives Straight As in Hospital Safety Score

Energy Efficiency

Pen Bay Medical Center has been recognized for its dedication to patient safety by being awarded an A grade in the Fall 2015 Hospital Safety Score. The Hospital Safety Score rates how well hospitals protect patients from preventable medical errors, injuries and infections within the hospital. Pen Bay Medical Center is also being recognized as a “Straight A’s” hospital for never receiving a grade lower than an A from the Hospital Safety Score since the Score first launched in June 2012. Only 133 hospitals across the country have been awarded Straight As.

By taking bold steps to modify fuel storage and type, and lighting and bathroom fixtures, Pen Bay Medical Center anticipates more than $550,000 of annual savings in energy and water usage for the medical center campus.

The Hospital Safety Score is the gold standard rating for patient safety, compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading patient safety experts and administered by The Leapfrog Group, a national, independent nonprofit.

By making the modification to burn No. 2 heating oil, Pen Bay Medical Center will become a “clean” physical plant and proudly join the ranks of numerous Midcoast businesses and organizations making big changes to protect our natural environment. *Full monitoring and validation of the project is underway and a full report will be provided in the spring of 2016

PBMC News and Events Holiday Tree Lighting Pen Bay Medical Center Ethics Committee

On Wednesday, December 2, trees along Anchor Drive were illuminated for the inaugural Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony. The ceremony took place in a tent adjacent to Anchor Drive and featured a coffee and cocoa bar, cookies, a harp performance and a visit from Santa. The celebration was a tribute to the Sussman House patients, families, donors and business partners and also marked the one year anniversary of the facility. The Sussman House is able to provide services to the Midcoast community due to the support it receives from its dedicated community members, donors and colleagues.

The Pen Bay Ethics Committee is available to review requests submitted by staff, patients and patient family members in regards to concerns surrounding an ethical dilemma. The committee serves to educate physicians, hospital staff, patients, and patient families; to advise on design and implementation of hospital policies and to provide advisory review of cases as needed. The primary responsibility of the committee in the case review process is to identify issues, encourage dialogue, educate, offer viable options, seek supplemental resources and facilitate problem resolution. Pen Bay employees may submit a request via the intranet and patients or their family member should call 921-8632.
