Pen Bay Medical Center earns coveted 2016 Leapfrog Top Hospital Award

The Leapfrog Group recently announced that Pen Bay Medical Center has been named a 2016 Top Rural Hospital. Widely acknowledged as one of the most prestigious distinctions a hospital can receive in the U.S., the recognition showcases Pen Bay Medical Center’s commitment to patient safety and quality.

“To be selected as a top hospital is truly an honor. I am proud of the entire Pen Bay Medical Center team for their excellent work and am pleased that our commitment to provide safe patient care has been nationally recognized,” said Pen Bay Medical Center and Waldo County General Hospital President and CEO Mark Biscone.

Recognized for the third time since 2012, Pen Bay Medical Center is one of 21 hospitals across the nation that received a Top Rural Hospital distinction.

The selection of Top Hospitals is based on the results of the 2016 Leapfrog Hospital Survey.

Performance across many areas of hospital care is considered in establishing the qualifications for the award, including infection rates, maternity care and a hospital’s ability to prevent medication errors.

Pen Bay Medical Center welcomes Mark Fourre, MD

Pen Bay Medical Center and Waldo County General Hospital are pleased to welcome Mark Fourre, MD as president and CEO. An emergency physician by training, Dr. Fourre had a reputation as a strong physician leader at LincolnHealth, where he was most recently chief medical officer.

A native of Minnesota, Dr. Fourre came to Portland and Maine Medical Center in 1989 where he developed the Emergency Medicine Residency program, served as director and has worked in roles of increasing responsibility with MaineHealth members since that time.

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Fourre to our Midcoast community.

MaineHealth Shared Values In 2016, MaineHealth had a focused goal of developing a common set of values across the entire MaineHealth system. Through the work of the MaineHealth Values Committee, which included representatives from each of the member organizations, the values listed below were recommended to and approved by the MaineHealth Leadership Team.

Once the shared values were approved, 200+ delegates across the system began gathering input at their respective organizations regarding behaviors that best reflect these values.

At a system-wide caucus in November 2016, the delegates from across the system shared their findings and worked together to finalize the behavior expectations to be associated with each individual value.

As of January 2017, Pen Bay Medical Center and all MaineHealth member organizations will begin incorporating these values into our daily work. We look forward to bringing them to life in our hospitals and throughout the Midcoast community.

PBMC Spotlight: Hospice and Palliative Care The Pen Bay Waldo Healthcare Foundation recently received a grant to further support important conversations between patients and their doctors in the Midcoast region. The “Educating a Community to Talk about End of Life Care” project, funded by the Davis Foundation, will begin in January 2017. The launch of this project expands upon the regional initiative to support the development of palliative care services at Pen Bay Medical Center and Waldo County General Hospital.

The project will begin with trainings for healthcare providers, nurses and community health and wellness staff on how to initiate conversations with patients around their preferences for end-of-life care.

Lauren Michalakes, MD, medical director of palliative care at Pen Bay Medical Center and Waldo County General Hospital is a faculty member for three national curriculums that will be used in the trainings, including one co-created by Atul Gawande, MD author of Being Mortal, Michalakes said, “I look forward to bringing these tools and resources to local community members and providers. The curriculums will prepare staff with the necessary tools and skills needed to facilitate successful care planning conversations with patients and families living with a serious or life threatening illness.”

The format of the trainings will be predominantly role-playing with community volunteers acting as patients, which will add to the genuine feel of the experience. “This project and training will bring community members and providers together so we can learn from each other, supporting our patients and families during some of the most difficult times of their lives,” said Michalakes.

The second part of the project includes providing community education and support for palliative care discussions and advance care planning throughout the Midcoast community.

Shared Electronic Health Record - Go Live Over the past nine months, colleagues at Pen Bay Medical Center have been working hard to prepare for the launch of our new electronic health record system called SeHR – the Shared Electronic Health Record. On January 28, 2017, PBMC will officially launch SeHR throughout the entire hospital.

While colleagues have undergone significant training on this new system, we do anticipate that our patients may encounter some delays as we go live. We appreciate your patience and understanding during the months of January and February. In conjunction with our talented medical staff and dedicated employees, SeHR will allow us to provide safer and higher quality care for our patients in the Midcoast.

Maine State Board of Nursing seats filled by Pen Bay Medical Center and Waldo County General Hospital nurses Pen Bay Medical Center is proud to announce that Stephanie Stimpson, RN, BSN, director of nursing at Quarry Hill recently was named to the Maine State Board of Nursing.

The mission of the Board is to protect public health and welfare in the area of nursing practice. The Board seats consist of seven registered nurse seats and two public member seats across the state.

Also named to the Board was Gail Dudley, RN, BSN, perioperative services director at Waldo County General Hospital.
