We’re Better Together.

Established with a generous gift from the Branta Foundation, the Picker Family Resource Center is committed to improving health throughout our community. Well-located on the Pen Bay campus, the Picker Center helps lead the hospital’s community wellness initiatives, providing information, resources and support to women, families, community members, patients and hospital staff.

The Picker Center brings hospital staff and partners together to guide community members through a lifetime of healthier choices.

The Picker Center maintains a bright and well-stocked library of health resources. It sponsors a full spectrum of education and outreach programs to provide individuals with knowledge and skills to take charge of their own health and better manage health conditions.

Educational programs focus on such topics as healthy eating, stress management, tobacco cessation, fitness and movement, and chronic disease management.

Since opening in 2010, over 5000 people have participated in Picker Center programs, classes and events. We are proud that the community recognizes us as an important source for health improvement, fitness and wellness.

Physician’s Fund for Clinical Excellence

The Ann Bresnahan Center for Excellence

Initiated through generous donations by the Al and Nancy Burnett Charitable Fund, and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Cawley, the Physician’s Fund for Clinical Excellence is supporting teaching, research and physician-led initiatives at Pen Bay Healthcare.

The fund supported establishing Pen Bay Medical Center as a teaching site for third year medical students enrolled in the Tufts University School of Medicine, Maine Track program. The Maine Track program assists qualified Maine students in pursuing a medical education that focuses on rural health, with a goal of training and attracting new young physicians to Maine.

Long-time Rockland resident, Bob Gagnon, and his family launched a campaign that continued past Bob’s earthly life, to expand cancer care services in Knox County. The Gagnon Cancer Care Fund supported renovations to create a quiet sanctuary for palliative care patients and their families at the Pen Bay Medical Center.

The three patient rooms and family solarium are dedicated to the memory of Bob Gagnon, and his vision, generosity and commitment to the people of his community.

Extensive renovations to Pen Bay’s Birth Center were made possible with donations from many community members, including a leadership donation from the Cascade Foundation. Patient rooms were improved to assure the best possible comfort and safety for mothers and newborns. With campaign donations, the Birth Center has purchased state-of-the-art electronic heart monitors to monitor fetal safety, while allowing birthing mothers freedom of movement during labor. Many renovations have been made to assure a positive family-centered experience, including installing pull-out beds in each birthing room to accommodate family togetherness and bonding.

On the second floor of the medical center, the Ann Bresnahan Center for Excellence, serves as a hub for staff and leaders to gather for professional development, simulated exercises and ongoing education and training. Recently completed initiatives at the Center include the purchase of a Sim Baby, an infant patient simulator, and “Crucial Conversations” training, an interpersonal communications program, for all leadership and nursing staff. The Ann Bresnahan Center for Excellence is named to recognize and honor Ann Watson Bresnahan for her many years of generosity and exemplary service to Pen Bay Healthcare.

Future Projects Donations to the Better Together campaign will continue to fund critical improvements throughout the Pen Bay Healthcare system, including helping to support improvements at the Knox Center for Long Term Care and Quarry Hill.
