Welcome Kerry Lavigne, MD

Welcome Michael Proscia Please join us in welcoming Michael Proscia as the new director of medical imaging services at Pen Bay Medical Center. Michael is a Nationally Certified Cardiovascular Radiological Technologist (CVIR) and is certified by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists for Radiology, Interventional Radiology and Interventional Cardiology. Michael has recently relocated to the Midcoast from Tampa, Florida.

Rockport to Rockport Challenge Winners Announced

Kerry Lavigne, MD

Pen Bay Medical Center and Waldo County General Hospital would like to announce the arrival of Kerry Lavigne, MD, Mohs Micrographic Surgeon and Dermatologist. Dr. Lavigne was previously at Dermatology Associates in Portland and recently relocated to the Midcoast region. Dr. Lavigne will see patients at PBMC on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays starting October 12. Please call 921-3750 to schedule an appointment. She will see patients on Thursdays at Waldo County Medical Partners.

The Works on Wellness Council would like to congratulate the team winner, the Skeleton Crew from Imaging Services, for traveling a total of 6,678 miles. The individual award was presented to Bonnie Topham from Outpatient PT for walking a total of 1,306 miles.

In the Rockport to Rockport Challenge, colleagues were asked to log their steps towards a goal of walking from Rockport, ME to Rockport, TX in 12 weeks. The fitness program wrapped up at the Texas themed Chili Cook Off celebration. Over 114,000 miles were logged by colleagues in the 12 week program.

Staff Recognized by Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM) – Maine Track MD Program Pen Bay Medical Center would like to congratulate Dr. Thomas Crosslin III, Dr. Dana Goldsmith, Dr. Richard Kahn, Dr. Elizabeth Lawrence, Dr. Jennifer McKenna, Dr. Timothy O’Brien, Dr. William Stephenson, Dr. Liesbeth Tryzelaar, Dr. Julie White and Dr. Aoife Redmond-Durow for being recognized

by Tufts University School of Medicine for teaching excellence in the 20142015 Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM) - Maine Track MD Program.

Pen Bay Medical Center became an official teaching site in 2014 and recently began its second year in the program by welcoming students David Gregory and India Stewart in July.

Stroke Program Recognized by American Heart Association and American Stroke Association Pen Bay Medical Center, a Gold Plus level recipient, is one of four hospitals in Maine that received a Get With The Guidelines Stroke award this year. Get With The Guidelines is a hospital based quality improvement program created to ensure hospitals consistently care for heart and stroke patients using the most up-to-date guidelines and recommendations.

With Get With The Guidelines Stroke treatment guidelines, stroke patients are started on aggressive therapies and medications that can help improve patient care and outcomes. Hospitals must follow these measures at a set level for a designated period of time to be eligible for the awards.

In this section of the Wellness Wire, Pen Bay Healthcare will provide a list of capital projects from across the system from each quarter. Pen Bay would like to highlight investments that are made back into our systems, our employees and ultimately our patients. Collectively, Pen Bay has invested almost $1.4 million in equipment and renovations/repairs in the 4th quarter. Please see below for a few of the improvements made this quarter.              

PBH Events Inaugural Pen Bay Healthcare Chili Cook Off Sixteen colleague teams competed for first place in the Pen Bay Healthcare Chili Cook Off held on Friday, September 18. Awards were given for showmanship (costume and booth décor), best overall chili, People’s Choice chili and a “Pot of Shame” was given out to the last place team.

The Code Red team from the Emergency Department received the People’s Choice and Showmanship award for best theme, costume, booth décor and audience appeal.

Third place in the cook off was a tie between the Silly Chilies from Nutrition Services and The Chili Spice Girls from Patient Accounts. Second place went to the Scorching Chili Unit from the Special Care Unit and first place in the cook off was won by Chili Chili Bang Bang from the Podiatry and Orthopaedics department. The last place award, the “Pot of Shame”, went to the Ring of Fire team from Administration.

Funds raised at the cook off event will be donated to the Pen Bay Medical Center Health and Wellness Trail that extends around the Rockport campus. The donations will be used to extend the current trail and add exercise stations along the route which is open to all employees and community members.

Pen Bay Healthcare would like to thank Bill Caron, President of MaineHealth, Rick Bates, Manager of the Town of Rockport, Charlie Page, Assistant Vice President of Maritime Energy, David Williams, Chairman of the Board of Pen Bay Healthcare and Jason Peasley, Fire Chief of the Town of Rockport for serving as the official judges of the competition. National Food Day Apple Crunch at Pen Bay Medical Center on October 26 National Food Day celebrates healthy eating habits and national food policies.

Thousands of events take place across the country to celebrate and enjoy real food and to push for improved food policies. PBMC will be participating by holding our own Food Day Apple Crunch on Monday, Oct 26. Hope Orchards is donating 400 apples to do a simultaneous “crunch” at the hospital. The cafeteria will also feature entrees on Wednesday, Oct. 28 that are raised without routine antibiotics in support of Food Day/Week.

Pen Bay Healthcare Team Finishes Third at Ragged Mountain Scuttle

Join Erik Frederick, the Pen Bay Community Health team and Keep Rockport Beautiful for a roadside cleanup event to help pay it forward.

Pen Bay Healthcare was a sponsor and sent a team to participate in the second annual Ragged Mountain Scuttle that took place on September 19 at the Camden Snow Bowl. The team of Max Dingle, Sarah Dingle, Aaron Kennedy, John Roy and Daniel Towers finished third place overall in the competition. All proceeds from the event benefit Camden Parks & Recreation and Go! Malawi.

Chef Mike Pelillo of the Pen Bay Medical Center Café won second place in the annual Camden Windjammer Festival West Bay Rotary Chowder Challenge with his fish chowder on September 5.

Erickson Fields Preserve Wellness Trail Grand Opening Recently Held in Rockport

The Grand Opening of the Wellness Trail at Erickson Fields Preserve was held on Friday, September 25. Over 100 people visited the Preserve to explore the Teen Agricultural Garden, stroll the trail with friends and pets, follow the Story Walk with 5-2-1-0 Let's Go! Knox County Coordinator, Adrienne Gallant and chat with Dr. Julie White from the Pen Bay Surgery & Wound Healing Center during the Doc Walk.

The Wellness Trail is open 7 days a week from sunrise to sunset at Erickson Fields Preserve, 124 West Street (Route 90) in Rockport.
