Healthy at Every Age

Coastal Healthcare Alliance, made up of Pen Bay Medical Center and Waldo County General Hospital, is committed to increasing the number of people in our community who are healthy at every stage of life. To do that, we are investing in programs and educational initiatives that prevent disease before it happens. As community members gain the knowledge and skills to take better care of their health, we will see improvements in our region’s overall well-being and reduced use of higher-cost medical services. Last year, with generous donations from residents, area businesses and hospital employees, PBMC completed a 1.75 mile Community Wellness Trail. This year, private donations have funded additional trail improvements including more exercise stations and prominent signage on Route 1. The PBMC Community Wellness Trail is open 365 days a year to everyone in our community. If you haven’t had the opportunity to visit, please stop by this fall to enjoy an invigorating fresh air stroll on our gently groomed trail with gorgeous views of Penobscot Bay framed by the beautiful fall foliage.

Community Supports Cancer Care Center

For the second year in a row, Rock Harbor Pub and Brewing Company owner/operator Dan Pease raised over $1,000 to support cancer services at Pen Bay Medical Center. The PBMC Cancer Care Center used donated funds to purchase a Deluxe Clinical Care Recliner. The new chair supports patients in comfort while receiving intravenous therapy. With the addition of a new clinical chair, the PBMC Cancer Care team can schedule more patients each day. All of us at PBMC are grateful to Dan, his team, family and customers for this support.

Summer Soirée Western Barbecue Benefits Coastal Healthcare Alliance

This August, donors and employees gathered to enjoy an evening of fun, food and Texas two-step to raise funds for capital improvements at PBMC and WCGH. The evening was one of a series of summer fundraising events hosted by the Pen Bay Waldo Healthcare Foundation.

Donors and staff don cowboy hats and join in the fun for a good cause.

The Annual Fund

The Annual Fund is a cornerstone of ongoing philanthropic support for our local healthcare system. In the coming year, the Pen Bay Waldo Healthcare Foundation will focus its efforts on raising $475,000 to support the following key initiatives:

With Gratitude: Cancer Patient Assistance Funds

This year over 500 people received a new cancer diagnosis at Pen Bay Medical Center or Waldo County General Hospital. As heartbreaking and terrifying as this news is, for many, fighting cancer is only half the battle—paying for it is the other part. Cancer patients, even those with health insurance, face high out-of-pocket medical expenses and drug co-pays, and many lose income while pursuing treatment. Few are physically able to maintain their regular work schedules during active treatment and family members often need to take unpaid time off work to care for and transport patients. With these huge financial challenges, cancer patients may have to choose between paying medical bills and basic necessities such as food, rent, mortgage or heat. With an outpouring of donations each year from generous individuals and community groups, our cancer care teams are able to provide critical financial relief to patients battling cancer. And this help makes an incredible difference. “Cancer is the greatest thief of all time. It not only tries to take your life, it makes you pay in other ways. Even when you do have good insurance, it doesn’t pay for everything. There are a lot of expenses you never realize that you’ll have until you’re in the middle of fighting for your life.” —RECIPI ENT, PBM C CANCER PATI ENT A S S I S TA N C E F U N D

The John T. Gorman Foundation awarded Pen Bay Medical Center a $25,000 grant to help financially distressed cancer patients pay urgent medical or living expenses in order to continue their cancer treatment.
