Community donations help support Pen Bay Medical Center’s continued participation in Tufts Medical School Maine Tracks program. Each year, PBMC provides a clerkship in rural medicine to two third-year medical students interested in practicing in underserved areas of Maine. Last month, Robin Cotter and Courtney Horton completed their nine-month clerkships at PBMC. Robin Cotter shares, “Growing up in a small-town provided me with the values that have shaped me into the person I am today. ” continued on back page … Tufts Medical School Maine Track students Robin Cotter (left) and Courtney Horton.

With charitable donations from generous individuals, businesses and foundations, the Pen Bay Waldo Healthcare Foundation provides critical funding to keep quality care close to home. Serving 80,000 people in the Midcoast region of Knox and Waldo counties, the Foundation helps fund institutional priorities at Waldo County General Hospital, Pen Bay Medical Center, Quarry Hill, Waldo County Dental Care, Knox Center, Belfast Public Health Nursing Association and the Sussman House. All donations to the Pen Bay Waldo Healthcare Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization, are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of federal and state law.

Investing in Primary Care

A strong network of primary care providers is vital to our community’s health. There is a national shortage of healthcare providers, and rural states such as Maine find it hard to compete for doctors. Pen Bay Medical Center (PBMC) and Waldo County General Hospital (WCGH) have made recruiting and supporting primary care providers a top priority. PBMC has added three new PLEA S E JOIN US I N WEL C O M I NG OU R NE W E S T PRIM A RY C A R E PROVI D E R S .

primary care providers in the past six months, and WCGH has two new doctors scheduled to come on board in early fall. With additional providers, both hospitals have needed to look at expanding office space for the growing primary care practices. WCGH completed a new medical office building and PBMC is beginning to plan for a new patient care center.

Grants and Gifts Support Safety Net Care for Waldo County Residents Belfast Public Health Nursing recently received a grant of $15,000 from the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation to support the continued delivery of medical care, education and basic needs for Waldo County residents struggling with housing insecurity, hunger, illness, disability and rural isolation. In 2017, with strong community donations, Belfast Public Health Nursing was able to help almost 2,000 children and adults in need of medical care, medication, food, shelter and warm clothing. Since opening its doors four years ago, Waldo County Dental Care has provided low-cost dental care to almost 4,000 low-income residents of Waldo

and Knox Counties. Community donations are critical to the continued delivery of this program. Long-time summer residents John and Mary Lou Voge recently visited Waldo County Dental Care, which prompted a generous donation.

“We will continue to support Waldo County Dental Care. So many adults in our community simply cannot afford dental care. Dental care should not be a luxury. Donating to Waldo County Dental Care is something we can do to make a difference.” — JO H N A N D M A RY L O U V O G E

Northport Golf Club Cancer Fundraiser, 2017

Cancer is a long road. No one should have to walk it alone. Each summer, a love of golf and desire to help neighbors facing cancer brings together hundreds of community members, volunteers and local business sponsors across Knox and Waldo Counties. Last summer, the Midcoast Cancer Classic raised more than $23,000 to help community members struggling with the health and financial challenges of a cancer diagnosis. Originally started as a fundraiser to help women facing breast cancer, the event has been so successful that the funds are now available to support PBMC patients in treatment for any type of cancer.

A group from the Northport Golf Club is planning its third cancer assistance tournament, Get Your Pink On. Dollars raised will help support the mammography and oncology patient assistance fund at Waldo County General Hospital. Helen Doherty Plourd, a member of the Midcoast Cancer Classic Planning Committee, sums it up simply, “It is my nature to always be thankful for what folks have done for me. This is just another way for me to return the favor!”

To find out more about local cancer patient assistance funds, or for information about sponsoring, supporting or participating in one of this summer’s upcoming golf tournaments, please contact Jamie Geretz at 921-6707. July 14, 2018

Courtney’s family has lived in Maine for many generations. “I have wanted to be a doctor for as long as I can remember. I want to practice family medicine here in Maine, and help people gain information and education so they can take better care of themselves.” Robin and Courtney agree that their training at Pen Bay Medical Center has led to a better understanding of their role as healthcare providers in a rural setting, helped them feel close to the community, and provided them with excellent training and experience for their future medical careers.
