ere at Pen Bay Medical Center and Waldo County General Hospital, we are grateful that you believe in our mission enough to support our work.

With charitable donations from generous individuals, businesses, and foundations, the Pen Bay Waldo Healthcare Foundation provides critical funding to keep quality care close to home. Serving 80,000 people in the Midcoast region of Knox and Waldo counties, the Foundation helps fund institutional priorities at Waldo County General Hospital, Pen Bay Medical Center, Quarry Hill, Waldo County Dental Care, Knox Center, Belfast Public Health Nursing Association, and the Sussman House. All donations to the Pen Bay Waldo Healthcare Foundation are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of federal and state law.

W CGH ONCOLOGY WA LK Braving rain and cold, hospital colleagues and residents from across Waldo County gathered in April for the annual Oncology Walk, which raises money for the WCGH Oncology Patient Assistance and Mammography funds. The walk raised more than $11,000 before expenses.

Your donations support several funds including the Waldo County General Hospital (WCGH) Oncology Patient Assistance and Mammography funds and the Pen Bay Medical Center (PBMC) Oncology Patient Assistance Fund. Thanks to your generosity, these funds are able to provide tens of thousands of dollars of assistance every year to cancer patients experiencing financial hardship.

For many of our patients, your financial ‘helping hand’ makes all the difference, and each and every gift, especially when pooled together, is part of that difference. Thank you.

A CENTURY OF GI VI N G Over the past 100+ years, the WCGH Aid has raised tens of thousands of dollars to support patient care at WCGH. Recently the Aid donated $8,000 to the WCGH Oncology Patient Assistance and Mammography funds, Waldo County Dental Care, and the Urgent Care Fund of Belfast Public Health Nursing.

Stover strains to be heard above the deep-throated roar of arriving motorcycles and the festive cheer of friends greeting each other around tables festooned with pink bandanas, water bottles and raffle tickets.

Stover, president of Maine Chapter 5 of the Patriot Riders of America motorcycle club, gathered more than a dozen members in the parking lot of Renys Plaza in Belfast in May before leading a chilly ride to Bangor. His goal: raise money for the WCGH Oncology Patient Assistance Fund. The fund helps cancer patients pay for needed medical and living expenses not covered by insurance or other sources.

“Cancer is a tough battle and people sometimes need a hand,” says Tammy Sweetland, the chapter secretary of the Patriot Riders and, with her neon hair in pigtails, one of the more colorful participants in the fundraising ride.

“A car repair, a gas card or a heating bill—this money can help.”

The Patriot Riders are just one in a dedicated corps of volunteers that raise money for assistance funds to help financially-stressed cancer patients at Pen Bay Medical Center (PBMC) and WCGH. Volunteers range from individuals to clubs like the Rockland Women’s Golf Association, which holds the Midcoast Cancer Classic golf tournament in August.

Each summer, a love of golf and a desire to help neighbors facing cancer unites hundreds of community members, volunteers and local business sponsors across Knox and Waldo counties.

Last summer’s golf tournaments raised over $50,000 to support the WCGH Oncology Patient Assistance and Mammography funds and the PBMC Oncology Patient Assistance Fund.

focus on Andrea’s well-being and spend more time together. Then, last Thanksgiving, Andrea’s health suddenly deteriorated, and within days she was admitted to the Sussman House, which provides hospice care on the Pen Bay Medical Center campus.

“I learned from this experience that, at times, the needs of a dying patient in hospice facilities are every bit as dire as the needs of a trauma patient in an emergency room,” says Dr. Norfleet.

In gratitude for the care and compassion Andrea received at the Sussman House, Dr. Norfleet recently made a very generous contribution to the Pen Bay Waldo Healthcare Foundation to support the hospice program. Making the gift was something he and Andrea decided together during one of their final walks through the halls of the Sussman House.

Dr. Norfleet says they wanted to make a donation to ensure that the wonderful care they experienced would be available to others. In that spirit, he plans to continue supporting the hospital by volunteering his time and expertise.

These initiatives fund medical equipment and technology, address new health challenges, support emerging treatment options, and help secure a strong future for healthcare on the Midcoast. The Annual Fund also supports the Sussman House.
