Harold Alfond® Foundation Awards $10M to Launch MaineHealth Cancer Care Network

Cancer patients in the Midcoast now have access to world-class, coordinated cancer treatment thanks to an innovative collaboration between MaineHealth and its member hospitals. The recently launched MaineHealth Cancer Care Network in affiliation with Boston’s Dana-Farber Cancer Institute delivers comprehensive, patient-centered care with assistance from a $10 million grant from The Harold Alfond® Foundation. Most cancer patients receive a combination of therapies that can include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. These treatments are best performed by specialists, including those with the highest level of training in their field. Not every hospital or private practice has the expertise or technology to deliver all types of care but by working together, the MaineHealth Cancer Care Network provides comprehensive cancer treatment services to everyone in our communities. “The Cancer Care programs at Pen Bay Medical Center and Waldo County General Hospital have been providing high quality, patient center cancer care in our communities for decades” said Mark Fourre, MD, President & CEO of Pen Bay Medical Center and Waldo County General Hospital. “This partnership will allow us to build upon an already strong foundation making advanced, coordinated care easier for our patients to access, while maintaining continuity of care with our specialized local cancer care teams.” To learn more about the Cancer Care Center at Pen Bay Medical Center and the MaineHealth Cancer Care Network, please visit www.pbmc.org and MaineHealth.org/cancer.

2017 FIND-A-PROVIDER

PBMC Spotlight: Clinical Research Department

Use the red PBMC Find-A-Provider toolbar on our website to search for a provider today. www.pbmc.org

Since the clinical research department was established in 2009, 21 studies have been completed with nine currently taking place. The department has continued to develop as it exposes physicians and staff to cutting edge medicine, sometimes providing the opportunity to gain experience with medications before they are approved. These clinical studies also allow the hospital to stay current with the latest technology/medicine and provide education to staff along the way. In 2017, clinical research was excited to welcome their first intern, a college student preparing for medical school.

CAREERS

Studies conducted through the clinical research department have focused on anticoagulation, gout, chronic kidney disease, anemia, diabetes, multiple sclerosis and heart disease. A specifically focused hematology and oncology research department has completed six studies, with 11 ongoing. These have included studies in breast cancer, lung cancer, leukemia, lymphoma, prostate cancer, polycythemia vera and essential thrombocytopenia.

To date, more than 1,000 patients have participated in studies through the clinical research department. Patients have benefited by learning more about their condition, having access to certain medications that might not yet be available and some are able to be followed more closely than they would be in standard care. A staff of three registered nurses work in the clinical research department. Jennifer Soda, RN is focused in hematology/oncology, and Caroline Knight, RN and Jennifer Weymouth, RN focus on research in all other areas of medicine. Combined, they have 34 years of research experience. PBMC is proud to be a community hospital providing state-of-the-art routine and specialty patient centered care to Midcoast Maine. Staying current with cutting edge technologies and medications through clinical research is an important part of improving the health and wellness of our patients and community. If you are interested in participating in a study or want to learn more about the clinical research department, please visit www.pbmc.org/clinicalresearch or call 921-8959.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation Services at PBMC Receives Full Recertification by Industry Leader (AACVPR) Pen Bay Medical Center is proud to announce the full recertification of its pulmonary rehabilitation services by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR). These services are coordinated by respiratory therapist, Janey Barthelette, BA, RRT, CPFT and are provided under the medical leadership and guidance of pulmonologist, Andrew Filderman, MD. Pulmonary rehabilitation services are designed to help people with respiratory problems (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [COPD] and other chronic lung conditions) prevent infections and worsening of lung conditions, build endurance and strength, and improve overall quality of life. Chronic lung disease currently affects over 17 million Americans and as the symptoms increase, quality of life decreases. It is important to have early intervention so a management plan and lung health education can be introduced. For more information on pulmonary rehabilitation at PBMC, please call 921-8880.

2017 PBMC Pharmacy – Flu Shots The PBMC pharmacy is excited to announce exciting changes this fall that will improve the efficiency and increase the range of services provided to the community. The first of these service improvements is providing flu shots in the pharmacy without a prescription. Research shows that nearly everyone can reduce their risk of hospitalization from flu related symptoms by getting a flu shot. For pregnant women and those with chronic diseases, such as diabetes, lung disease, and heart disease, vaccination is even more important, as the risks of the flu are greater. Nearly all major insurance carriers will pay the majority of the cost, and the pharmacy can accommodate anyone who has roughly 20 minutes to spare. Get your flu shot while you wait for your prescription, or stop in anytime that is convenient. Also new to the PBMC pharmacy this year, the staff will be offering flu shot clinics at local businesses. PBMC is looking forward to providing this new service to local organizations in an effort to keep the local workforce healthy for the upcoming fall and winter season. For questions or more information about the PBMC pharmacy and services provided, please visit www.pbmc.org/pharmacy or call 921-8585.
