PBMC Speech and Hearing; Pediatric PT/OT Department

Annual Report 2017

The speech and hearing and pediatric PT/OT department at Pen Bay Medical Center (PBMC) provides speech and audiology services to people of all ages and physical and occupational therapy services to patients between the ages of birth and 21. The staff offers a multi-disciplinary, family-centered approach and encourages family participation in therapy whenever possible.

Working together so our communities are the healthiest in America.

Coastal Healthcare Alliance Annual Report The PBMC and WCGH 2017 annual report is now available. Please visit http://bit.ly/2CSrGCr to read the report online.

Audiology at PBMC offers compassionate, patient-centered care for hearing and balance testing, counseling, hearing conservation and rehabilitation with hearing aids or other assistive listening devices. Hearing loss is not always age-related. It can be related to a family history, exposure to loud noises or medical problems with the ear or other health issues such as stroke or diabetes. We work closely with primary care and ear, nose and throat (ENT) providers and child development services in the community to assess a patient’s overall health and find the best solution for each person. Speech language pathologists at PBMC provide evaluations and treatment for speech and language issues, alternative communication methods, auditory habilitation/rehabilitation and feeding/swallowing with children and adults. Services are provided at the outpatient clinic, the hospital and at a variety of preschool settings in our community. The physical and occupational therapists see pediatric patients. They provide evaluation and treatment services to address motor delays, orthopedic injuries and musculoskeletal dysfunction, sensory and feeding delays, neuromuscular and congenital impairments, balance problems and developmental vision delays. They provide consultation services and orders for splints and braces, as well as adaptive equipment. The therapists treat children using a multidisciplinary and family–centered approach with goals directed toward maximizing functional independence and quality of life. Therapy goals are often achieved through play activities that are customized to each child’s specific needs. For more information, please contact Lisa Manley, department coordinator, at 921-6395.
